Inconsistencies/bugs in strptime in Solaris 10?

All -
I've discovered a number of issues (or, at least, I think I have) with strftime and the %z and %Z format directives. According to the documentation, %z is supposed to recognize and generate ISO 8601:2000 format for time zones; i.e., -0500 or something like that. %Z is supposed to recognize and generate the three-character time zone names (e.g., EST). However, strptime() refuses to recognize any timezone beside the current one for %Z (and this is not documented, as far as I can tell), and does not recognize %z at all. What's more frustrating is that I can't seem to find the appropriate implementation of strptime.c for Solaris 10 which processes the %Z directive; the most likely candidate appears to be /netvirt/usr/src/lib/libbc/libc/gen/common/strptime.c, but that doesn't refer to either Z or z.
Thanks in advance -
Sam Bayer

Checked # again on my T43 notebook - now, it's working. Didn't change anything. I'll go back and check the other systems. #2 still persists.

• Patchset 8.1.7.1 doesn't address bug 1482140 re:EJB - Solaris

I noticed that patchset 8.1.7.l was posted recently to Metalink. However, the JDeveloper Release Notes indicate that this patchset should include a fix for the bug thay prevents JDeveloper from deploying EJBs to Solaris (1482140). However the Patchset README indicates that this bug is not addressed. Furthermore, it indicates that no changes were made to JServer in this pathcset. Any idea from the JDev team when we may see these bugs addressed?

Re your posting ...
the bug number we were talking about was 1482140, and your link points to for bug #1481972. It is the same?
as you can imagine we've had a few "bugs" file on this issue !!
Here is what i just verified :
the howto/workaround entitled "Deploying Business Components as an EJB to Oracle 8.1.7 on Solaris" refers to Bug No. 1481972 can be found at :
http://technet.oracle.com/docs/products/jdev/workarounds/jdev32/ejb817.html
I just checked the internal system and saw that it is linked to the "Base Bug" 1482140 which is referred to in the jdev 3.2 release notes.
you also asked :
When iAS 1.0.2.1 is out?
the best place to ask that question would be the "Oracle9i Application Server" forum located at :
http://technet.oracle.com:89/cgi-bin/forumdisplay.cgi?action=topics&forum=Oracle9i+Application+Server&number=75&DaysPrune=20&LastLogin=
it does get confusing -- doesn't it ??

You are seeing 6477975, which is fixed in dbx patch 117564-07 (which is for sparc) and 117565-07 (for x86).
However, if you are already on Solaris 10, I'd recommend to upgrade to Sun Studio 12, which is free, has many improvements and works much better with Solaris 10. If you, for any reason, can't upgrade compilers to Studio 12, you can still use Sun Studio 12 IDE plus debugger and compilers from Studio 9. It is easy to install several versions of Sun Studio on a machine, you just need to give different base directories to the installer.

• Is there a BUG in Aurora under solaris 5.8?

Mr Ravi is Aurora module certified for solaris 5.8 ?
i put the maximum values for java_soft_sessionspace_limit and java_max_sessionspace_size (2147483647 for both) and i still get the Aurora Assertion failure at eox.c:187
we really need to use oracle's java stored procedure features.
Thank you.

Oracle 8.1.6 is certified on Solaris 2.8.
Is it 64 bit Unix or 32 Bit Unix.
What is the size JAVA_POOL_SIZE. Increase this parameter by say 20 to 30 MB and check.
If it is 64 bit unix/oracle then set
LD_LIBRARY_PATH to $ORACLE_HOME/lib64.

• Bug in multicast code solaris 9 (and 10?)

Hi,
I am working with a client who needs to use
lots (80-100) of multicast addresses.
We are using bge/gld. Here is the problem:
The setsockopt call with the IP_ADD_MEMBERSHIP
argument succeeds even though bge/gld
only has room for 64 multicast addresses.
If I use setsockopt to add 80 group memberships
on different multicast addresses, netstat -g
shows all 80. Sending/selecting any of
the sockets above the 64th has no result.
(Packets are dropped because gld
has failed the group membership add). I found a way to make it work using:
multisize = 100;
in /platform/sun4u/kernel/drv/bge.conf
This allows up to 100 different mcast addresses.
(But this is not documented anywhere as far as
I can tell.)
However, I think the error primitive that gld
sends up when you run out of free mcast entries
should be propagated all the way up to the setsockopt caller. Interesting that the multicast
loopback has no trouble with sockets after 64 (because IP doesn't record the error from gld???).
At any rate, if you need a test, let me know and I'll send it. Hopefully, someone who is working on the
kernel can take a look. I've spent some time and it
looks like the DL_TOOMANY error primitive that gld
sends up from gld_enable_multi() is being dropped
on the floor.
max

In snmpd.conf file add these entries.
rocommunity public
syslocation "System administrators office"
syscontact "System administrator"
sysservices 72
And then start snmpd .Then to do a snmpwalk juz use
~#snmpwalk -c public -v 1 localhost
Assuming that you have compile and configure with SNMP v1 support

• When will 11.1.0.7 will be available for Solaris (SPARC) (32-bit)?

Hi
Does any of you know when 11.1.0.7 for "Solaris Operating System (SPARC) (32-bit)" will be available for download on http://www.oracle.com/technology/software/tech/oci/instantclient/index.html ?
The reason for my question is that 11.1.0.6 contains a bug (at least on Solaris) causing it to reserve approx 180M swap for each client started!

• Facing problems with readdir() function in Solaris 2.6

Hi,
I am working on Solaris 2.6 platform. Configuration details are:
System = SunOS
Release = 5.6
KernelID = Generic_105181-31
Machine = sun4u
NumCPU = 16
sparc
SUNW,Ultra-Enterprise-10000
I have written a piece of "C" code that is used to search file(s).
For that I am using opendir/readdir/closedir
to open a directory/ read directory entries /close directory.
This piece of code is used simultaneously by many programs to search for file(s) in
same directory. Sometimes readdir skip a file although it is present in that directory.
Is there a bug with readdir in Solaris 2.6?
Also as per the man page of readdir() in Solaris 2.6, the pointer
returned by readdir() points to data which may be overwritten by another
call to readdir() on the same directory stream. The data is not overwritten
by another call to readdir() on a different stream.
Is there a bug with readdir() when multiple calls are being made to readdir()
on the same directory.
If you know something about this, please let me know.
Thank you.
Sunil

Hi, and welcome to the Palm Support Community.
Birthday reminders only come up on the handheld's calendar. No good reason, sorry to say. Palm doesn't own the software any longer, and when PD 6.2 was released by its current owner, it left a lot to be desired for a lot of users.

• Solaris 10 update 6 keeps generating core file (/core)

I wonder if somebody has encountered the following issue.
I did a fresh install of Solaris 10 update 6 on two servers (T5140 and T524) from DVD.
I noticed that a core file was in the root filesystem (/core).
So, I deleted it.
As soon as I delete the core file, another one is generated.
This is happening on both servers where I installed Solaris 10 update 6 from the DVD.
This is not a live update install. Solaris was installed from scratch. When prompted to preserve previous data, I replied with 'do not preserve data'
Does anybody know where the core file is coming from and how to stop it being generated?
Found out that is coming from vold

Is this a Solaris 10 update 6 bug?
Edited by: shen on Jan 29, 2009 8:45 PM

Never mind.
It is a known bug documented on manual " [Solaris 10 10/08 Release Notes, Chapter 2 Solaris Runtime Issues|http://docs.sun.com/app/docs/doc/820-5245/chapter2-1000?a=view] " as shown below.
The solution is to apply vold patch [138130-01|http://sunsolve.sun.com/search/document.do?assetkey=1-21-138130-01-1].
Solaris 10 10/08 DVD Media Might Not be Automatically Mounted by vold (6712352)
The Solaris 10 10/08 DVD does not mount by default during runtime. No error message is displayed.
Workaround: Perform the following steps:
1. Become superuser.
2. Disable vold:
* On Solaris 10 Systems:
# svcadm disable -t volfs

• Solaris 10 (x86) + XDMCP + Java = No Num keypad

Hi all,
I have a Solaris 10 Server running on Sun Fire hardware. Users login via XDMCP and use a WYSE Linux Based terminal to connect to the Sun Server. From inside the terminal numlock works as you would imagine it should. However when running a Java Applet, If the user presses Numlock, the Backspace and Delete keys stop working and the numeric keys do not activate.
This only affects Java Applet based applications and does not effect apps like Star Office.
Running JRE/JDK 1.5.0_06 with Java Desktop 3
Windows users running the same applet combo do not exhibit this problem nor is it native on the console. It only exists through things like CygwinX, ReflectionX, KEAX or any hardware based XTERM.
I have read http://www.freedesktop.org/wiki/CygwinXTroubleShooting which suggests this is an existing historical Solaris problem

This bug also surfaces in FreeBSD's port of JDK 1.5.0. With Num Lock switched on, Backspace and delete keys don't work, nor for that matter does Tab, (or Shift-Tab, or the cursor keys, Home, End, Page Up or Page Down... In fact, any non-meta key that happens to be coloured grey on my keyboard. To delete, I have use to Ctrl-H, which is nice if I want to be reminded of teletype days, but not nice these days.
Switch Num Lock off, and you lose use of the Number pad for numbers, but the usual functionality for the grey keys on the keyboard returns.
I spotted it the other day on a Solaris 10 x86 machine, and couldn't believe that it surfaces there as well, so it's obviously a core bug that both the Solaris build and FreeBSD build is affected by.

• Help only displays the frame in Solaris 10, update 6

I have a help application that has been running fine since Solaris 8. It works in Solaris 10, update 1, but not in update 6. Only an empty help frame is displayed. My JRE is 1.6.0_05-b13, and I am using help 1.1.13. I suspect that replacing the default HelpUI with my own subclass has stopped working. My application has this line of code which is used to replace the default HelpUI:
UIManager.getDefaults().put("HelpUI", "HelpUIWithClose");
The users wanted a close button, so HelpUIWithClose is subclassed from BasicHelpUI, and a big close button is added on the toolbar. This has been working for years. Before and after this line of code are two print statements that get the toString value of the UIDefaults HelpUI object. The results are:
(before)
javax.help.plaf.basic.BasicHelpUI
(after)
HelpUIWithClose
I am only guessing at the problem because of all of the "Unknown Source" values in the trace below. If I comment out the UIManager line above that replaces HelpUI with HelpUIWithClose, the help functions normally, but of course it is missing the close button added by HelpUIWithClose.
An alternate question might be how to add a close button to the toolbar of help?
I get a very long trace when this fails. I will post it at the end of this email. Any ideas on what is wrong?
Thanks,
Herb Miller

• Problems installing Solaris 10 rel. 1/06 on Dell PowerEdge 2850

Hello,
Tried to install - Solaris does say "No disks".
Wanted to use Sun's driver for LSI PERC 4e/Di RAID contoller which is onboard, so I made the diskette according to instructions. The driver is for Solaris 10 3/05 and there seems to be no new one for 1/06 release.
Used option 5 in the menu [Apply driver updates].
It read the floppy, then went successfully thru the questions stage and then displayed a dialog box saying that there are no disks. Disks are there (2X73GB) as RAID 1 and visible to BIOS.
Tried to specify boot option "acpi-user-options=2" in the GRUB. Then it fails to mount the floppy drive which is the only way to add the ITU driver.
Please, help.
Thanks in advance.

Yeah, I knew this was going to happen...

Unless this is changed between OpenSolaris / Solaris Express / Solaris Nevada and Solaris 10 Update 1, it is possible to add (one [*]) ITU driver
from an optical media.
Now all you have to do is figure out how to convert the ITU floppy to an
ITU CD-{R,RW}.
Have a look at the "build" script, function "make_itu_cd_image()"
contained here: http://www.tools.de/solaris/itu/
It builds an ITU CD ISO9660 image with RockRidge, using mkisofs.

• Unresponsive Solaris 10 Guest on Oracle VM

Hi there
I've got an Oracle VM 2.2.1 installation on an X4150 which has a few guests: RHEL5.6, Windows and Solaris 10.
Both RHEL and Windows are performing really smoothly and as expected, however the Solaris guest starts fast but becomes unresponsive within a few minutes of booting.
Unresponsive in that although there are no userland processes running, the guest becomes really claggy.
For example, running top freezes every few seconds for a few seconds, and the same with ssh connections into the server. Basically, every so many words that you type, a pause will be introduced, rendering the whole VM unresponsive.
When running top, this unusual behaviour shows itself in occasional bursts in kernel activity. Although the load average and CPU utilisation is low, the kernel activity will spike to 100% every few seconds. I can't find any messages in the /var/adm/messages file that could explain this other than some weird messages at boot about the system date:

Other unusual symptoms include the top utility not loading for seconds or minutes (it fluctuates) when you initially try and run it.
What's more strange is the fact that the system starts-out as being fast and responsive for the first few minutes after boot, but quickly slows down like this.
I don't think there are any network issues, as other VMs on the same Oracle VM server run well, and even pings to the Solaris guest appear fine. Its literally like the system itself is being paused when these random delays occur. The routing on the system also appears to be normal.
Solaris release installed is Solaris 09/10 and I've just installed the May 2011 Recommended Patch Cluster on it, to bring the kernel to 144489-12.
Any suggestions would be most appreciated.

The solution turned-out to be a known bug with OVM and Solaris 10 guests. We had to pin down the VCPUs to physical CPUs to workaround this.
