Incremental Collection Evaluations

If changes are detected and propagated down the collection “chain”, and the evaluations of all collections takes longer than 5 minutes…do those changes get lost for those collections that didn’t get evaluated in that 5 minutes?
Ex.  All Systems has a new machine added at 8:00am, and the incremental collection evaluations start updating the other collections in the "tree".
However, if we have too many collections in this "tree" evaluating, and at 8:05am the next incremental starts on All Systems…will those changes be lost from 8:00am for those collections that didn’t get evaluated in the 8:00am time frame?
What we are seeing is some collections are not evaluating every 5 minutes.  I do see in the colleval.log that these collections do run incremental updates at some point during the day, but they are not seeing any changes.  When I run a full
update the added machines throughout the day are added to the collection.  Our theory is those "cached changes" are lost once that 5 minute interval passes, and if the bottom collections on the "tree" haven't received them, then they
won't until a full is done.
I know we have some work to do on our collections and how they are updating, but this would help us understand why we are seeing what we see.
Thanks!

It appears that we may have found the solution to our issue.  First, I should say that I did leave something out in the original post, which may or may not make a difference with troubleshooting for most of you.  What we have is a collection being
included in another collection.  So when the included collection has an update, we assumed the collection it is included in would also have an update.  This is what is not happening until a manual update or a full auto-update.
Ex:  All Systems -> All Workstations-> Application Collection  (The Application Collection includes All Workstations and excludes another collection)  When a machine is added to All Systems, the query for All Workstations puts the
new machine in to All Workstations.  The only two things in the "Membership Rules" for the Application Collection is the Include and Exclude I mentioned above.
We found an article that explains what is happening, so I am putting it out there to help others, or for someone to say that isn't actually how it works.  I can say that we had 3 collections with this issue, and putting a query on each of them seems
to have resolved our issue...for the moment anyway.

  • Can we stop a collection evaluation once it is started?

    Hi Guys,
Is there an option to cancel the collection evaluation once that is started?

Could it be that a specific collection is jamming the other evaluations? In that case have a look here to remove it from the queue:

  • Collection Evaluation - multiple primary sites

    Hello:
If I have a CAS and multiple primary sites and have a set of collections all created on the CAS, where is the collection evaluation done (I believe coll eval is done only on primary sites)?  Is it done on each primary site independent of others?
And then they replicate to CAS and CAS sorts out possible conflicts/discrepancies?
So if I set the collection evaluation schedule, is that based on the local time of that particular primary site?
    Thank you,
    Mustafa Hamid, System Center Consultant

    Thank you Jason,
I think I understand your comment about the managed systems - the systems that are assigned to that primary site.  To take a simple case to help me understand - So if I have a device collection that has a query based on OU name=Dallas and that collection
evaluates on PS1 and also on PS2.   Both will send their results to the CAS.  Generally they should both evaluate to same result (maybe sometimes a bit different based on the DC they connect to).  It seems in this case they are repeating the
same work since its all global data?
    Thank you

  • GPP: Item Level Targeting - How are collections evaluated?

We are looking at optimizing a new VDI environment and are overhauling are GPOs which will be applied to those machines.  Using a third party product, we're moving some of the user based settings into its management stack.
There are additional debates over whether or not we should create separate OUs for some geographical scenarios so that we can apply two different GPOs with only one setting difference...  location.  My feeling is that we should use a standard naming
convention on east vs west and use a single GPO with a computer name ILT to apply the east/west setting.
I can't seem to find anything with regards to how ILT collections are evaluated and what impact they may have on the system.  Does ILT use WMI to evaluate the name or some other method?
    Thanks

  • Collection evaluator error in SCCM 2012 SP1

I m getting below errors continuously in colleval.log,
CCEPSource::GetCollectionInfo:- Collection Not Found with CollectionID=2924
    CEP-ErrorCode=-2016280319
CEP-Failed to process Collection Extended Properties changes, Status = COLLECTION NOT FOUND FOREIGN KEY CONSTRAINTS, changes will be retried on next processing cycle.
But, there is no such collection id '2924' in SCCM database. Due to these continuous errors, SMS_Collection_Evaluator component is in Critical.

Colleval.box had some CEP files (240+ files) and I deleted all of them.
Now, Colleval.box is empty and Colleval.box\Retry folder is also empty.

  • SCCM 2012 PowerShell script gets progressively slower with each machine added to a collection

Firstly, I hope this question firs in this forum.
I have a PowerShell script that I created the imports a CSV file and adds the machine names to a collection as a direct membership. There are 5000 machines total in the list. When the script first starts, the average per machine is just a few tenths of a
second. Once it reaches about 10% the average is up to almost 4 seconds and that time is getting larger with each machine. I tried using the CMDLets for SCCM but they were even slower than the WMI seemed to be.
What is the reason for this increase?
Is there anything I can do to not have this happen?
    My script:
    $ErrorActionPreference= 'continue'
    $FilesInFolder = Get-ChildItem $PSScriptRoot
    $CSVFiles = $FilesInFolder | where {$_.extension -eq ".csv"}

    #Initiate the collection evaluator
    $CollectionQuery.RequestRefresh()
    $CollectionFinish = Get-Date
    AddToCollection-WithWMI

I haven't checked the complete code, but it doesn't look very efficient. For example I would take the collection query out the loop for all the pcs, simply because it's always the same and would save you about 4999 queries.

    ^^ This
Additionally, you could likely replace most of the WMI calls you do with the built in SCCM PowerShell cmdlets.  The two lines below will check to see if a Device Object for a specific PC exists and if it does, adds it to your collection
    $PCID = Get-CMDevice -Name $PC.SerialNumber
    if ($PCID -ne $null) {
    Add-CMDeviceCollectionDirectMembershipRule -CollectionName $CollectionName -ResourceId $PCID
If you want to check to see if the collection exists before trying to add devices to it, you can use the Get-CMDeviceCollection cmdlet.
    Get-CMDeviceCollection -Name $CollectionName

  • Collection Update issue - Full Eval of collections and Several in Awaiting Refresh Status

We are experiencing an issue where several collections has a Current Status of Awaiting Refresh. They have continued to stay in this status for 2 days. We've verified that no blocking exists in SQL, checked for a bad query and have
performed a Site Reset. We have also noticed that when we restart SMS_COLLECTION_EVALUATOR it forces a full collection evaluation of every collection in our environment (~7900). We see 7900 items hit the coleval.box and we also see them queued for
processing in the Colleval.log. Also, if we manually update the Collection Membership of a single collection (Awaiting Refresh or Ready) this also forces an evaluation of every collection in our environment. Any Ideas??? TIA

Also think about how your collections are setup in terms of limiting. There could be a cascading effect.

  • Function of Collection Update Schedules

I am having trouble getting SCCM to update collections only when scheduled.  It seems that any time a change is made to a limiting collection that triggers all collections that are dependant on that collection to refresh immediatlely.  I would
like to make a change to a limiting collection and have the collecitons that are limited by that collection not update until they are scheduled to update.
I have a Collection "Main" limited by collection "Limit".  If I add a computer to collection "Limit"  and it meets the query requirements of collection "Main" the client gets added to "Main"
immediately instead of waiting until the scheduled time for collection "Main" to be updated.  I would like to add clients to the "Limit" collection and have the "Main" collection not update until it is scheduled to update.
    Any way to achieve this?

My business case doesn't say that all software should only be installed at 3:00AM.  My business case says that particularly intrusive applications should install in the overnight hours.  Stuff with no/low impact can install in the middle of the
    day.
Envision this... I am asked to deploy some package to a list of 20 machines over night.  Then the next day I am asked to deploy the same software to 30 different machines, also overnight,  then 100 more the next day, then 1000 more the next day,
then 10000 more the next day.  like a phased rollout.
I could build a new collection for each of these distinct collections of machines and build an advertisement for them also, and that sure would deploy a package to a those collections at the correct time.
The problem is that I'd need 6 collection and six advertisements, when I could easily get away with two collections and just rely on the colleciton update to make the package available for a certain time.  I dont wanna build all those collections and
all those advertisements.  I just want to make my collection get wider and wider, and I want to do it in the daytime, but not have it take affect until later.
Maitenance windows don't work for many instances.  I don't believe Wake on LAN takes MWs into account.  Laptops that are usually off don't work well with maintenance windows.  Plenty of machines are never on during their maintenance windows,
and if you set software to deploy outside of maintenace windows after a deadline, then you have defeated the maintenance window.  A week from now the deadline is past and now the software installs as soon as it is discovered.  Set the deadline
into the future, and machine that are not on during their maintenance window never install the software.  Maintenance windows are no panecea.  It would work to create a new advertisement every time the collection was expanded, but that's unneccessary
    work.
My method is more like a step function.  You know?  New machines get added to the standing collection with an advertisement in the past once a day at 3:00AM and the software installs at the next client policy refresh after that time. Simple and
easy.  Hey here's 100 more machines that need the software.  No problem, dump them into the limiter collection and then when the main collection refreshes, those new systems are added to the main collection.
The reason I do this is that I don't want to wake up at 3:00AM to drop those clients into the collection. I stage them in a pre-deployment collection and then they get added to the advertisement target collection when the collection evaluation runs on schedule.
Anyway, this worked fine in 2007, a change was made in 2012 to break it, and now I have a nice workaround in place, it is not too complicated, so problem solved.

  • SCCM 2012 - Missing device from custom collections

    Hi to all,
    I have installed SCCM 2012 SP1.
I have created some custom devices collections to group different servers based on roles.
When I add a computer manually (Direct Membership) to a custom collection it doesn`t show in the SCCM Console for a long time, even if I re-open the console or click on Update Membership\Refresh. I can see the computer on the Membership Rules tab of the
    Collection immediately.
Also I have noticed this strange behaviou ons collections with query membership.
Usually, this happens after I have installed the SCCM client.
Obviously, the device exists on SCCM: I can find it on "All Systems" collection.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks
    Regards
    Daniele

    Hello,
Have you looked at the Collection Evaluator queue?
If you have a large number of Collections, or many Collections that are set to a quite frequent update frequence, this will cause new additions to a Collection to be queued up.
By connecting to the site, using CEviewer, you should be able to quickly determine whether or not this is the cause of your issue.

    Hi,
Did all OU clients show up in the default All Systems collection now?
And colleval.log on the site server records details about when collections are created, changed, and deleted by the Collection Evaluator. You could have a look.

You can see that between 12:48am and 9:38am, the Server is pausing for a combined total of TWELVE MINUTES! Often for 2 whole minutes at a time, during which the Server is completely unresponsive.
I have read Sun's GC tuning guide at http://java.sun.com/docs/hotspot/gc/index.html but it is not much help:
It says "Pauses can be minimized by using a small young generation and incremental collection, at the expense of throughput."
Well, I AM using incremental collection, and the young generation is the default size, which is quite small I believe. (32 MB max?)
It also says "Unless you have problems with pauses, try granting as much memory as possible to the JVM. The default size (64MB) is often too small."
Well I DO have problems with pauses, but I HAVE to allocate a ton of memory. The Server must support hundreds of simultaneous users, each with hundreds of K's of personal, dynamic, temporary data.
It also says "Unless you find problems with excessive major collection or pause times, grant plenty of memory to the young generation. The default MaxNewSize (32MB) is generally too small."
I AM having problems with excessive major collections and pause times, so according to this I should NOT grant more memory to young generation (eden).
What am I left with? Nothing! I am totally out to lunch here. The box this is running on is a dual P3-600 with a gig of RAM and Red Hat 6.2, with Sun JRE 1.3.1_02. My startup command line options are:
    java -server -Xincgc -verbose:gc -Xms256M -Xmx900M
What should I do? The Tuning guide essentially says to screw around with generation sizes, but none of its specific tips seem to apply to me! This is a production server and I am worried about making things worse by playing around, so I was hoping someone out there might have some experience with this and concrete advice before I just start messing around with the memory map. Should I increase the young generation size? Decrease it? Something else altogether? HELP!

With default settings, I am getting horrible performance, under peak load, 25%-50% of server time is being spent with GC, approx. 11,000 minor GCs per hour! And a Full GC every hour or two which takes up several minutes. On average, I am losing 13.09 minutes per hour due to minor GC, and 54.5 seconds to major GC.
I tried your settings, Chuck, and they seemed to be working beautifully at first... minor GCs were now occuring once every few minutes for a couple seconds, instead of 3 times per second for a tenth of a second. Minor GC were now taking 1.06 minutes per hour instead of 13.09, more than a 1300% improvement!
    HOWEVER...
After 7 hours, the Server started getting REALLY slow for no apparent reason. It seemed almost as if reading from sockets was suddenly becoming extremely time intensive. Then I got a HUGE minor GC that took 25.6 seconds. [GC 507410K->478034K(551296K), 25.6328459 secs], then a couple minutes later, the Server CRASHED with this output:
An unexpected exception has been detected in native code outside the VM.
    Unexpected Signal : 11 occurred at PC=0x40573aa7
    Function name=malloc
    Library=/lib/libc.so.6

Yummy. Signal 11's really make my day fun :(. I tried restarting the Server, but it crashed again in the same way 15 minutes later. Then I switched back to default settings and it has run fine all weekend.
The Sig11 makes me think either our C lib is buggy (our Linux distro is getting a bit old), or we have a physical memory problem. Odd that it only shows up when I tried your new settings though...

  • Why does my conditional expression not work?

I want to increment a global keeping track of how many critcal tests have been run. Usually I just increment it in the post expression of the test. However, if I have a test that loops it would increment on every loop, so I put a conditional expression in the post expression so it only counts once the loop is done:
    RunState.LoopIndex < 10 && RunState.LoopNumPassed < 3 ? FileGlobals.Critical_Test_Count : FileGlobals.Critical_Test_Count++
However, the false condition in the expression never gets evaluated. I've put watches in to make sure the condition goes false after the last interation of the test and it does. But my global never increments. The true condition is not supposed to modify the variable.
    What am I miss
    ing?

The reason for this is that the post expression is evaluated before the loop increment expression, so on your last loop the post expression is evaluated (loop count = 9) then the loop increment is evaluated and the loop is terminated. See page 6-26 of the Teststand user manual.
    Hope this helps,
    Nick

After I upgrade my sql 2008 to sql 2012, I am getting several errors in SCCM 2007.Please find the below screen short
Configmgr reporting service point - Critical
    SMS-Collection-Evaluator -critical
    SmS-dstribution Manager -Critical
    SMS-SRS reporting point -critical
    SMS-Discovery Data manager -critical
    SMS-Status Manager -critical
    SMS policy Manager -critical
How can I resolve this issue.

I updated the path still I have the same problem...several error message found in SCCM server.please find the below one error message
On 7/21/2013 10:51:16 AM, component SMS_DISCOVERY_DATA_MANAGER on computer DCD-SCCM reported:  SMS Discovery Data Manager failed to process the discovery data record (DDR) "", because it cannot update the data source.
Possible cause: On a Primary site, it is probably a SQL Server problem.
    Solution:
    1. Review the immediately preceding status messages from this component about SQL Server errors.
    2. Verify that this computer can reach the SQL Server computer.
    3. Verify that SQL Server services are running.
    4. Verify that SMS can access the SMS site database.
    5. Verify that the SMS site database, transaction log, and tempdb are not full.
    6. Verify that there are at least 50 SQL Server user connections, plus 5 for each SMS Administrator console.
If the problem persists, check the SQL Server error logs.
Possible cause: On a secondary site, SMS Discovery Data Manager probably cannot write to a file on the site server, so check for low disk space on the site server.
Solution: Make more space available on the site server.
how can I resolve the issue??
