My computer wont sleep.

thanks to everyone for the many-varied-suggestions...
But the answer was that my monitor was in it's 1st throws.
It finally went black screen, no dot,
I replaced it, and bingo presto, the computer sleeps just fine, and there's no funny error mesgs showing up, etc.
I'm writing this to finish out the post with the correct answer.
other suggestions included:
The computer comes with a Silver CD that says Apple Hardware Test, you can boot off that by holding C Key and run tests to see what is up - also have you run the system profiler to see if that sees the disk?
How do I trash all my prefs ? sounds like a place
to
start.
Maybe, but it may be worthwhile to go to the next Step
suppose the 2nd drive is still OK. would software
restore simply restore OS9 ?.. or.. would it wipe
out all files.
It has been awhile since I did a OS 9 install (about to do one on my old iBook to clean it up) but there are a few options (if I recall, guess I finally adapted to OS X), one where you can zero out the drive (do not do that) and others where it is save the old system then install clean. (The only issue is you may have to drag/reinstall apps or reauthorize) BTW I thought I saw you mention running 9.1? 9.2.2 was alot more stable release for me at least.
should I disconnect the 2nd drive and THEN restore
os9?
then try to connect/install like I did in the 1st
place.
Probably not needed
how old? .. 2000. 128 mb ram [I've since added 2x
that]
Was that recent?
on the other hand...
what if it is a ram chip. should I take them out
and
re-install one at a time?
Yes best way is to go to original chip then keep adding
What I would do (just because I open up my case usually at last stages and these steps are quick, pretty much in the following order)
1.) Zap, excuse me, I mean reset PRAM see if that helps, if not
2.) Start with extensions off, see if that helps
3.) See if the system profiler sees the HD, if not seen check connections to HD, just in case
4.) If the profiler sees it, see if Apple Disk Aid works
5.) If it is seen and Step 2 does not work, or it is not seen and connections are okay, Diskwarrior or old Norton (SystemWorks 1 was okay if I recall, anything after run away, anything before okay.)
6.) Boot from a Firewire drive if you have one with OS installed and see if the missing disk comes up
If you do not have items in 5, and 6 works, probably something amiss in the OS and a clean install probably best move (though you can try Diskwarrior or Norton still if you do not want to go through all that)
If none of those work, then start pulling RAM chips, especially if the RAM is relatively new (you mentioned you added some)

Make sure you set the computer to 'never sleep' in system preferences.
The last thing you want a DVD authoring system to do is to go into sleep mode

  • Computer wont sleep after new ram.

I installed a new stick of ram yesterday and now my macbook has 2.25GB. Well everytime i close the lid the computer acts like its sleeping. It has the light going on and off but when i open the lid it boots up like from a restart. How can i change this? before it would just go to sleep and wake up.

I assume that the type of memory module that you have bought is the appropriate one for your MacBook model (if not, there's not much more to look into). Have you tried using only the 2 Gio stick? I don't actually know if this can be done (though if you can have mismatched memory modules, one should be able to leave one bank unfilled), but there are two reasons for trying:
1.- First generation MacBooks carrying the Intel Core Duo processor allow for no more that 2 Gio. If your Mac is one of these, your 2.25 Gio setup might be hitting some limitation when trying to wake up which forces it to reboot.
2.- The problem might be a problematic module or an incompatiblity between the original and the new one. Having only one installed will help you clear that out.

  • Put computer to sleep and now it wont wake up

Last night i set up my new desktop and i program it to need a password every time i need to login. so when i put my computer to sleep last night and when i got up this morning it wont wake up. I turned it off and restarted it but when i turned it back on my monitor said that it has no signal, my mouse and keypad isn't working. What can i do to make everything work again

Look at the back of the monitor and check video connections. You should only have 1 video cable connected. You just have to choose from VGA, DVI or HDMI.

My computer wont let me download MP3 rocket because it says its in DOS mode.  Im 14 so if someone could help me turn it off step by step thank you.

From what I know, MP3 Rocket is a program that will only work on a Windows computer. They don't make a version that will work on a Mac.
If you need to convert Youtube files to MP3, then you may want to try Smart Converter. It is available in the App Store for free. Just launch App Store, then look in the Top Charts section, under FREE, select "see all", and look for the the download shown below.

I need help. Hope you could help me.

    Close your iTunes,
    Go to command Prompt -
(Win 7/Vista) - START/ALL PROGRAMS/ACCESSORIES, right mouse click "Command Prompt", choose "Run as Administrator".
    (Win XP SP2 n above) - START/ALL PROGRAMS/ACCESSORIES/Command Prompt
In the "Command Prompt" screen, type in
    netsh winsock reset
    Hit "ENTER" key
    Restart your computer.
If you do get a prompt after restart windows to remap LSP, just click NO.
Now launch your iTunes and see if it is working now.
If you are still having these type of problems after trying the winsock reset, refer to this article to identify which software in your system is inserting LSP:

  • Why am I unable to connect to my airport whenever I put my computer to sleep while the time machine is backing up?

Ever since I installed Lion (version 10.7), I am unable to reconnected to my Time Capsule and get on the internet after I put my computer to sleep and then wake it back up. This doesn't happen all the time -- just when I put my computer to sleep when Time Machine is backing up. If I put my computer to sleep when it's not backing up, it's fine. If it is backing up though, when I wake my computer up again, it is unable to reconnect to the Time Capsule to allow me to use the internet. I have to wake the machine up, click on "Stop Backing Up", wait 30-60 seconds, click "Turn Wi-fi off", wait another 30 seconds, turn it back on and then I am fine. If I just turn wifi off and on without stopping the backup, it doesn't work and I am still unable to connect to the internet. I currently have 10.7.1 but it still has the same bug. 10.6.x did not have this bug. Other than "don't put your computer to sleep when Time Machine is backing up," any suggestions? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

In this case, that hint may help.
According to Apple support, some configuration files may get damaged or corrupt by time, after updates or upgrades and should get deleted ocasionally.
OK ... switch off wifi on the machine.
Then go on and delete the files mentioned below.
You will find the files on your system drive (not your home folder) as follow:
    /library/preferences/com.apple.preferences.accounts.plist
    /library/preferences/com.apple.preferences.sharing.plist
    /library/preferences/SstemConfiguration/preferences.plist
    /library/preferences/SstemConfiguration/com.apple.airport.preferences.plist
If there are files in this folders with the same name but additional .orig at the end, delete them too.
It is possible that not all files are on your system. That will be ok.
The files will get newly created by system on reboot.
    For that reboot the machine.
    Join your wireless again.
If you are using Lion, the Library is hidden. You have to use (menu bar) "go to" -> "go to folder" on finder to access them.
If the problem (unlikely) persists, report back here.

  • How do I stop aluminium wireless keyboard from waking computer from sleep?

    Hi
My aluminium wireless keyboard wakes my computer from sleep, at random occasions. Sometimes after five minutes, other times up to four hours. Sometimes not at all. My iMac wakes up (annoyingly during the night, waking me up as well) and screen says "Connection Lost", showing the greyed out keyboard-logo. It's not lying either—keyboard doesn't work, for about 30 sec until the stupid thing finds it again and all is back to normal.
*What can I do to stop this irrational behavior?*
Could this be a bluetooth hardware-malfunction?
(Background: My iMac has been acting this way, as far as I can recall, throughout all of the 10.6.X-upgrades—from time to time. Reason I am posting this now is that I haven't had this problem for a couple of months now, but it came back out of nowhere the other night, about a week ago. And I haven't been doing anything out of the ordinary, that I haven't done at least a couple of times during this period where it all worked fine.)
Additional information: I don't know if this has anything to do with the problem at hand, but when using the bluetooth for something other than just keyboard+mouse, say syncing my Nokia phone, the mouse always goes haywire and acts all laggy, trickling across the screen as I try to move it.

Yes, that sounded indeed like a daft question, but as it seems changing the batteries did actually solve the puzzle. I am baffled by this, as the batteries claimed to be at 40% and shouldn't need to be changed. But I changed them after reading your reply, and the problem stopped. Now, one week and a couple of days later, the problem still has not reoccurred.
For one reason or another, once batteries drop under a certain level of power, the keyboard connection will start acting up. I feel a bit silly, should have checked that bit myself before posting my question, but I'm glad this solved my problem. Thank you ajduguid.

  • Why am I receiving a notice to update my version and then not able to click on it? It also prevents me from entering the internet if I put my computer to sleep with this update box there!

The box appears after I'm on the internet. It's on my desktop when I go to shut down my computer and after I've shut down the internet. When I click on the x it doesn't disappear. When I click on the box indicating Yes, I'd like to update my version of Firefox it does nothing. If I leave this box there and put my computer to sleep it stays on and actually prevents me from entering the internet! I need to restart my computer or shut down! My computer is a MacBook Pro and is only one year old .

They have to know who the person is who has their account set up wrong?   Do you know who they are or how to identify them?
if not, how do you expect Verizon to find which user that is?
Best thing for you to do is set up a mail filter and just throw those into the trash or delete them the second they come into your email box.

My iTunes v.10.6.3.25 is intermittently refusing to open. Sometimes re-booting my laptop works, sometimes not. I just put the computer to sleep, and when I woke it up, iTunes started automatically (I had been trying to open it just before by clicking on a song file in my Documents window, and that's the song that started playing when the pc woke up). I went to my iTunes Help and clicked Updates/download iTunes 10.7 twice, but got nothing. Now, Im wondering if I should downloacd the entire 10.7, or whether that would overwrite all my files, erasing my songs. Anybody know? Thanks.

    Hey thanks for replying.
    Here's what I did:
First I tried the Winsock reset in the Command prompt. Nothing changed.
Next, I tried the instructions on http://http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4123. The only other program that came up on the 'Winsock Providers' tab on the program was 2 Windows Live applications, which I can do without. So I deleted all Windows Live Applications.
I did the Winsock reset in the Command Prompt again and rebooted my comp.
Unfortunately, nothing has changed. iTunes keeps freezing at various stages of the sync, then shows the candy cane-striped bar with either the words 'Finishing sync' or 'Cancelling sync', before showing the Apple logo.
Sometimes, iTunes gets to the syncing stage - "Copying # of ####" - where it will trudge through the first, second and third tracks before flashing "Copying 4 of ####" for a split second and I catch "Cancelling sync" briefly before the Apple logo appears.
Again, I've repeated the steps I mentioned in my previous post. Does ANYONE know when the new version of iTunes is set to be released?! This one is driving me INSANE, to say the least!!

  • "Allow power button to put the computer to sleep" setting is not available but button does it anyway

This has never happened before. Computer stayed at gray screen with no progress wheel so I held the power button to shut it down. Since startup afterwards the power button sleeps the computer. There's no "allow power button to put the computer to sleep" choice available in Energy Saver but button does it anyway. Is there a defaults command that will fix it? Something else?

I've had Mavericks for a week and a half. I don't believe yesterday could have been the first time I used the power button in an attempt to get the Restart Sleep Cancel Shut Down box, but I've been around long enough to know that memory will fool you.

i left a dvd in my macbook pro for a while and now my computer wont recognize that there is even a disk in there, nor will it eject it. how do i get the dvd out?

Hold down the mouse button or trackpad clicker as you start up.
If no joy, restart and hold the Option key. This brings up the Startup Manager, which will draw an Icon for each bootable Volume. When all are drawn, the Eject key is "live".

My computer wont power up.  I have unplugged it for 30 min. and replugged and it still will not power up.  I cant get an service appt until Tuesday.  Is there something else I can do?

Until Tuesday, the only thing you might try, if you already have and didn't state that you did, if this is the same outlet that you have used, and suddenly you lost power, try plugging your computer into another outlet and see if that works. If it works, either try another appliance in the outlet you are having trouble with, or check to see if a breaker has tripped.
If that doesn't work, well...you will just have tro wait until Tuesday.
Wish you the best of luck
