Indesign & Bridge

Good morning all,
I have been using InDesign and Bridge (regular) for a while now.   Recently I have noticed Bridge taking long to load and most of the time freezing.  I also noticed when relinking artwork in indesign the file take longer to link.
A few things I think could be the issue but my #1 thought is it could be my drives.  I am running 2 new WD in raid 0.  Is there a way for me to test integrity issues?  Also I installed a dedicated drive for caching for all the adobe apps.   This was initally used for only premiere and AE...is it recommended for bridge/PShop/etc also?
thanks for taking the time to read and respond....any advise is greatly appreciated.
Lo

Steve,  this seemed to have fixed the issue....thanks for your quick response.   I wonder if there was a setting in bridge that causes all the adobe apps reading my drive to slow down during the I/O sessions.
thanks again!

  • CS6 Indesign & Bridge for Mac retina display

    Will Adobe be releasing an update for Indesign and Bridge (as they have done for Illustrator and Photoshop) to make them suitable for retina displays? Just spent £2000 on a new mac and am seriously disappointed that Indesign and Bridge are fuzzy! I don't have the budget to switch to the cloud just yet so this is a problem for me as a graphic designer! Why would Adobe release updates for Illustrator and Photoshop but not Indesign?

    Yes. InDesign CC had somewhere around 30 man years of development put in
    to it.
    It was re-written completely from the ground up to go 64 bit on Windows
    and decarbonized on Mac.

  • Multiple Problems with PDF InDesign, Bridge, and Acrobat Reader

    I create proof books with a blend of Adobe Bridge & InDesign.
    Here is my work flow: I will BOLD the errors I am having and need help with.
    Step 1.) I create contact sheets in Bridge and save them as PDF's
    Problem with Bridge ( I have another posting for this thread as well under Bridge) I cannot save PDF's larger than 400ish photos at 300ppi (important for my printer) without it saving as a blank PDF. COMPLETELY EMTPY! So I have to split up my photos into groups of 400 or less photos then patch them back together.
    Problem with Acrobat: If I patch those PDF’s back together with Adobe Acrobat (a suggestion from another person on here) they save great but I get an error when I try to import them in indesign. The error reading: ERROR. Cannot determine page count.
    Please open the PDF file in Acrobat, do a “Save As…” and try again. (99)
    Step 2.) I use a script (MultiPageImporter2.2.1.jsx) to import the PDF's into Indesign. (if saved as one pdf in acrobat I get the above error)
    Problem With InDesign: I run this importer script in InDesign to create my books with a template I use from my printers. Well since I have to import multiple pdf with multiple pages ( because I can’t piece them together without the above error. Then I have this problem:
    I place a pdf with 1-226 pages in. I start this on page 1.
    I place the next pdf with 1-141 pages in. I start this on page 227.
    An error pops up that says I MUST start my import on page 226!!!!!!!!!! I don’t want to import on page 226 because I have two photos on that page!
    I tried it several ways and no matter what I loose my last page of my first import.
    PLEASE someone help me! I feel like I might be doing something really silly but I’ve spent 7.5 hours today working on this books with error after error.
    I have done all the updates on my computers and nothing works. I use two macs and both have the same errors. I have a mac-book Pro | snow leopard and a Imac | snow leopard.
    Thanks much!

    All your problems seem to stem from the PDFs that you are making from Bridge.  What you are describing should be perfectly possible, but the fact that Bridge doesn't want to make a PDF with more than 400 photos and it all goes downhill from there makes me suspect Bridge.
    Here's a plugin that may help?  Looks pretty cheap for what it does.
    Apart from that I'd try to clean up the PDFs that Bridge is producing if Indesign doesn't like them.  One way would be to print to a new PDF, after you've combined them as necessary.
    As to the last pronlem you mention, where it forces you to place on page 226, have you tried creating a blank page 227 first, before you try placing?

  • [JS] (CS3) InDesign- Bridge- mySQL (and back)

    Hi there
    I'm trying to connect InDesign to mySQL database. So far I managed to make Bridge read/write to mySQL via its HttpConnection object (JavaScript Tools Guide.pdf p.170) & Apache/PHP:
    ===========================================
    if (webaccesslib == undefined) {
    if (Folder.fs == 'Windows'){
    var pathToLib = Folder.startup.fsName + "/webaccesslib.dll";
    var libfile = new File(pathToLib);
    var webaccesslib = new ExternalObject("lib:" + pathToLib);
    var http = new HttpConnection("http://localhost/adobe.php?var1=A&var2=B"); // INPUT (Crude way of passing data to Apache)
    http.execute();
    response = http.response; // OUTPUT
    ===========================================
    I'd like InDesign to pass the request(string containing the webpage address in this case) to Bridge, then make it run the code and finaly read back the contents of the "response" string.
    I've read the documentation twice before I gave in. Can anyone please give me a hint how to run this from InDesign?
    Thanks a lot
    Weller

    Weller,
    Search the forum on "webaccesslib". Someone made a brilliant posting a couple of weeks ago on how to get the webaccesslib to work in InDesign on both platforms.

  • CQ5 with InDesign, Bridge, and Drive

    We make lots of catalogs. We use the full CS5 suite currently, and are considering purchasing CQ5 as the repository for the assets and then to move on to the web content management. Some thoughts and questions on how CQ5 might support a print production flow:
    All our assets for the catalogs will be in a CQ5 repository.
    1) We need to use InDesign's Place command to get assets from the repository into InDesign. Therefore Drive's role in virtualizing the repository is a must have. Our system integrator is telling us to stay away from Drive because Drive 3 is buggy and hasn't been tested thoroughly with CQ5. Well Adobe, no production ready Drive vitrualized repository then no sale. Any thoughts on CQ5 and InDesign working through Drive in high volume, large file size environment?
    2) InDesign has a fabulous feature called Live Caption. It's a dynamic text box that shows the File-->Info metadata of any image the text box touches. We incorporate this heavily in our print production workflow. Through XMP we built a custom File-Info palette for images. Then with the Live Caption we can dynamically display that info - image name, item number, styling notes, color. Works great. We'd like to workflow the pages and images and metadata through CQ5, but CQ5 doesn't write metadata back out to the file info, so therefore we would no longer be able to take advantage of InDesign's Live Caption feature. What is involved in getting CQ5 to write select fields of metadata to the file info metadata so we can use it in InDesign Live Caption? What's involved in using Bridge to change the File Info metadata and have that properly update the corresponding metadata in CQ5.
    3) We routinely reuse images. For search and reuse capability, the DAM has to automatically record the relationships of images on what pages and what pages have what images. That allows us to search for an InDesign page and see all the images on it, and also search for an image and see all the InDesign pages where it was used. This functionality is completely out of box with other content management systems designed to support print. It's certainly a feature I'd think would be out of box for the Adobe suite, but it isn't in CQ5 or doesn't seem to be. How might this be done?
    Very, very disappointing that Adobe CQ5 does not have a better understanding of print production workflows. If it did, then Adobe would have an unbeatable multi-channel story to tell.

    Since I put it out there, it's fair that I step up.  This is a list of 30 enhancements to the DAM landing page only. And yes, I know what the sales folks would say: "we can do all those things." But, just not interested in paying staff or consultants to customize in order to get what are mostly obvious and expected.
    Overall, the interface is a mish mash of buttons, links, folders, grid - it doesn't know what it wants to be. Is the interface supposed to mimic a file system, a web page, a spreadsheet? The schizophrenia creates confusion as end-user can no longer rely on their past experiences working on a common interface. Pick an interface metaphor and own it completely. (Rebuid it in Flex.)
    Implementation of functionality is so incomplete. It clearly was put together foremost to meet a checklist for the sales team and not to be great software. Search – check; Thumbnails – check; Copy and Paste – check and check. But, the incomplete implementation of every one of those is downright demoralizing. When functionality is added – please make it complete and great.
    The buttons across the top for Home, Websites, DAM, Campaigns, etc. should be selections in the left nav similar to the way Outlook lets you select Mail, Calendar, Contacts, Notes, etc. This would free up important real estate and move some elements that are selected maybe once or twice during a session.
    The menu choices at the top New, Copy, Paste etc. are implemented like links, but the should really be built with standardized menus and selections. File->New, Edit->Copy, etc. This would be intuitive to end users and facilitate easy growth and organization as new commands are added.
    The menu choices should be context aware and toggle when applicable - Activate Deactivate and Copy Paste for instance.
    The search box on the right needs significant enhancing. (I do see how it may be more effective when searching in Websites, but in DAM it is woefully incomplete.) A couple of quick ones: need better indication of what location you're searching – current folder or whole repository; need options for searching content or file names; results list is too small; need ability to switch to advanced. It's probably all configurable but with a little thought it could have been great out of box.
    EVERY file of any type that's in the repository should get a gorgeous scalable thumbnail automatically. Adobe owns Scene7 and Acrobat - of course this can be done. For me, sadly, for thumbnails to be so incomplete reveals a lot about the strategy and priorities of the folks making the software. See #2 above.
    Should have a View menu that lets you select from multiple out of the box views, including:
    The Standard view, which should have a slider to control the size of the thumbnails.
    A Thumbnail view also with a slider to control size.
    A cool Carousel view.
    A plain List view, which doesn't have thumbnails.
    The List view should have a feature where when you rollover you get a thumb preview.
    The columns don't size in a common intuitive way. Sizing one column shouldn't alter the size of the other columns.
    Should be able to create columns in the list views of a metadata attribute.
    Should have a small drop down arrow for all items that displays a pop-up of the details info. This would save a lot of clicks opening to view the details, closing, and then trying again.
    Needs a Cut command (which would fall with Copy, Paste, and Move under an Edit menu). Cut and Paste would in some cases be easier and more intuitive than using the full Move dialog.
    Needs a Rename command (which woud also fall under an Edit menu). Using the Move command for a rename is not ideal.
    Could use a Duplicate command (or the Move dialog could have a check box in it for Duplicate).
    Should show at the bottom of the window the number of items in the window being browsed.
    Should show user info and role somewhere.
    Should have an option at the bottom for viewing all on one page.
    Should have a drop down for selecting how many to view on a page i.e.16, 50, 100, all.
    Should be able to have saved searches appear as Smart Folders in the left nav.
    Default Smart Folders for left nav should include most recent, checked out, in workflow, to do.
    Need to be able to launch any asset into its native app for editing (in combination with Adobe Drive installed).
    Tools dropdown should have a choice for Audit, which shows the file's complete history including:modification history, number of times downloaded, by who, workflow steps, etc.
    Ability to select an asset (or multiple), and click an email link to send it as an attachment.
    Ability to have Favorite folders in the left nav. Would allow you to jump around without navigating the tree.
    Would be cool to have folders in the left nav that map to folders outside of the repository. You could create some really neat import and export functionality for the DAM.
    There are more, and thanks for the time.

    I have spent some time geting Java automation to work with InDesign, it's not my favorite language but I learned some things that may help and put them into some course content that Adobe should put out shortly; will post here when it is available online.
    Our company, Silicon Publishing, provides general InDesign Server automation training, though we don't have a current offering that specifically targets Java we teach some of the basics of working with Java (many unique techniques!) and could arrange a limited form of training.
    The documentation and samples with the SDK should take you part of the way there: for specific scripts, it has been helpful to us to get things working in an easier-to-write (i.e. JavaScript) script first, then translate such a script to Java, taking into account the unique characteristics of the language and various tactics (outlined in the SDK documentation) to address these.

  • InDesign CS5 (Mac OS 10.6) can not open its own file

    I need guidance to open an artwork file that in one hour I have to send to the print shop. InDesign refuses to open its own file.
    Any clue? Adobe, please help.

    Re: InDesign CS5 (Mac OS 10.6) can not open its own file
    Bob and Peter
    Thank your for helping us out. It was really necessary to ask a coworker to open the file and export it in InDesign markup language.
    Three hours later than expected, but it's done!
    We are stuck here. I'm a Master Collection user of CS5, using only Dreamweaver, Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign, Bridge and Acrobat Pro. (I don't know why I bought the Master's). My coleague former Window user, got a Mac in May and downloaded the trial version of Design Studio Standard Collection of CS5.5. Before expiring, we purchased its license and filled it in the active trial version.
    A couple of months ago we noticed that were missed Plug Ins on his version and contacted Adobe who instructed us to download the whole files again. We never did because it is a pain to get rid of the missing parts of a pre installed trial version etc.
    I will ask Adobe to send a CD disk for his version.
    Regards,
    Junia

    Bridge does not "support" camera models. Only ACR (Adobe Camera Raw) does.
    The last version of Bridge for CS4 is Bridge 3.0.0.64 and the last version of ACR for Photoshop CS4 is ACR 5.7.
    If your camera is not supported by ACR 5.7, you would have to download the free, stand-alone Adobe DNG Converter 6.4 and convert your raw files to DNG raw files with it.
    Bridge is just a file browser.  It does not open or edit files, it just hands them over to the appropriate editor, whether that be ACR, Photoshop, Illustrator, Acrobat or even MS Word.  Bridge depends on ACR to bui8ld the thumbnails and previews for raw files.
    Incidentally, there is a dedicated Adobe Bridge Macintosh forum:

  • Photoshop CS2 Space Monkeys

    I know its an old program but I don't have the funds to go out and buy a newer one.
    I'm running it on a Probook, or MacBook 10.4.8.
    I've tried whiping both computers, reinstalling everything and I'm still getting this error and only on Photoshop. And yes I only install it on one of the computers at a time. Indesign, Bridge and Illustrator all work fine.
    When I launch Photoshop I get a Space Monkey 9.0 screen with no registration info on it aside from a strange #. Once it loads it says "Your Adobe Photoshop User Name, organization, or serial # is missing or invalid. The application cannot continue and must now exit." I checked the Adobe Registration Database and the Number is the same as the number for the other programs after the EPIC_SERIAL= for the other programs and my name is after EPIC_NAME=. I tried entering my actual serial # in the slot, same result, and when tried on the other programs they didn't like it.
    I've tried also removing the Adobe Registration Database and running the install CD to the part when I type in my cerial # and its accepted then quiting. I still get the Space Monkey.
    I'm the only one that loaded this software, and I bought the disk set brand new 2 1/2 years ago.
    Please help or reffer me to a similar post that still is active, I'm out of ideas and I need the software to run for work purposes. And its giving me a complex about monkeys, robot rubber ducks, and them being in space.

    Repairing Permissions is basic maintenance.
    I still advocate Repairing Permissions (with Apple's Disk Utility) before AND after any system update or upgrade, as well as before AND after installing any software that requires an installer that asks for your password.
    I have seen software installations go sour because the installer did not find everything as and where it should be.
    I have also seen software installations go bad because the installer did not clean up after itself properly and did not leave everything as and where it should be.
    This is just my own personal opinion and practice based on my own observations. Others may disagree and that's OK. I can only base my routines and my advice to others on my own experience and conclusion. I don't pretend to know why others believe otherwise.
    Repairing Permissions after the fact (i. e. not immediately before and after an install) may NOT help. Try it anyway, though.

    Additionally, if your machine does not run 24/7 so that it runs the daily, weekly and monthly Cron Scripts in the middle of the night as intended by Apple, run Cocktail (shareware) as well.
    Cron Scripts are maintenance routines designed by Apple to run on a daily, weekly and monthly basis in the middle of the night.
    If you don't run them, you WILL run into trouble, sooner rather than later.
    Here's an excerpt from the Apple tech doc http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107388
    Mac OS X performs background maintenance tasks at certain times if the computer is not in sleep mode. If your computer is shut down or in sleep at the designated times, the maintenance does not occur. In that case, you may want or need to run these manually.
    Mac OS X periodically runs background tasks that, in part, remove system files that are no longer needed. This includes purging older information from log files or deleting certain temporary items. These tasks do not run if the computer is shut down or in sleep mode. If the tasks do not run, it is possible that certain log files (such as system.log) may become very large.
    Also, from: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106978
    The disk activity generated by find is a normal part of file system maintenance, used for tasks such as removing invisible temporary files that are used by the system. It is scheduled to occur early in the morning at 03:15 everyday, 04:30 on Saturdays, and 05:30 on the first day of each month.
    NOTE:
    There have been comments to the effect that Apple "fixed" this in 10.4.2 and later versions of the OS, but I have not been able to verify this to my satisfaction. The reference in the 10.4.2 release notes are far from explicit on this subject.

    If you have DiskWarrior, run it regularly too.

  • How do I perform a "Suite Product Activation" so that Acrobat will start working on my new Retina MacBook Pro?

    How do I perform a "Suite Product Activation" so that Acrobat will start working on my new Retina MacBook Pro?
    Like others, I have recently upgraded my MacBook Pro to the next generation and migrated all my information from old to new. Everything works seamlessly EXCEPT Acrobat. Photoshop, Indesign, Bridge and Lightroom all seem functional. Acrobat hangs with an error message "Suite Product Activation Needed. Acrobat was installed as part of a suite. To enable Acrobat, please start another element of the suite (such as Photoshop)." Needless to say, starting another element of the suite has NO impact on Acrobat.
    This has to be a common problem. Now that Apple has made it really easy to migrate information from old to new machines, it has to come up all the time. What surprises me greatly is that I can't find any coherent answer in these forums.
    So how do I get Acrobat running again?

    Hi Anubha,
    I do not understand what you said below.
    I am running Adobe Acrobat Pro Version 9.5.5. I do not remember whether it came with Photoshop or InDesign.
    When I open Photoshop, it opens without my having to follow any instructions to activate the software. As a matter of fact, I cannot find my Photoshop serial number anywhere in the Photoshop program itself. I do know it from my profile at Adobe.com. Are you suggesting I deactivate Photoshop on the new computer and then reactivate it using my serial number? Will it reactivate?
    When you say
    "/Library/Application Support/Adobe" at the root level of the startup disk (not the Library folder inside a user's Home folder)
    what do you mean? I do not have a startup disk. I have the original installation disk but that version of Photoshop has been updated a few times.
    After staring at your instructions for a while, I realized that you might be talking about the Library/Application Support folders resident on my Macintosh HD, although why you called it a startup disk is unclear to me. IAC, I went into those folders and duly moved the three folders into a new folder I called “Acrob1” and restarted Adobe Acrobat 9 and got the following error message: “AMT Subsystem Failure  The licensing subsystem has failed catastrophically. You must reinstall of call customer support.” with a small (6).
    By undoing my actions I am back to the staus quo ante.
    Now what?
    Regards, Robert

  • Programs quit unexpectedly every time I try to open.

    I have the Adobe Creative Suite production premium CS6 and everything was working fine yesterday. Today I was cleaning out all the stupid fonts I dont use in Font Book and then I deleted a LOT of them. Now most of the programs will not open (Illustrator, InDesign, Bridge, After Effects)... It starts to load up and then says it quit unexpectedly.. Can anyone help me?
    Thanks

    Rempleseed,
    Is it an option to go back to an earlier time/state of the computer, obviously, after securing any files that may disappear (if you have them on your main harddisk)?

  • Open letter to adobe: What future for Fireworks?

    Open letter to adobe: What future for Fireworks?
    Hello, My name is Fred and I'm a Fireworks user since ever.
    I prefer to warn you about my complete addiction to this software.
    There's many discussions on this forum and others, on how you deal with Fireworks "improvements". Some say that you are in the process of discontinuing this program, others of a possible resale ... I even read some arguments about switching to Creative Commons license.
    All this is the literal translation of a sincere concern!
    Can you give us some answers on the future of Fireworks?
    I think our community is quite alive and active, so I hope that you'll respond in a clear, fast answer.
    Thank you in advance.
    If I made huge mistakes of spelling and grammar, I apologize.
    English is not my language.

    From the looks of it, the writing is already on the wall.  I own a Creative Cloud subscription and one of the main benefits touted for the Creative Cloud is regular updates and bug fixes.  And every other app like Dreamweaver, Photoshop, Illustrator, Indesign, Bridge, Lightroom, the Edge Tools, etc.  have seen multiple nice updates as part of the Creative Cloud subscription which has made me a big fan of Creative Cloud.
    All except for Fireworks.
    Not a single update or bug fix has occured for Fireworks in Creative Cloud.  Even for the simplest of things.  I have reported typos in Fireworks that still have not been fixed.  In fact, I think the only app in Creative Cloud that has not been updated is Fireworks.
    So like I said, it seems the writing is on the wall.  It's a shame too because even with its lack of care, it works phenomenally well for designing user interfaces.  But now others are starting to catch up and people seem to be switching to alternatives because Fireworks appears to be a dead end.
    Without Fireworks, Adobe doesn't have a single UI design app in their portfolio and in particular it seems lots of UI designers are jumping ship now from Adobe to Bohemian Coding and their Sketch app. I'm dumbfounded that Adobe has allowed this to happen.
    From what I understand, the Sketch app is created by just two people which makes the inability to keep Fireworks updated all the more baffling.

  • Upgrade question from CS3 to CS5.5?

    I am having to reinstall software after a hard disk problem. After installing from my original CS3 disk, everything installed properly EXCEPT photoshop. It failed. I have uninstalled and reinstalled several times, and photoshop fails every time. All the other programs - Illustrator, Indesign, Bridge, etc work great. I figured something was corrupted on the disk. Since I had the same CS3 also on a laptop, I tried copying the photoshop files to a flashdrive and copy them to my computer. Now I can get to the registration screen for photoshop, but when I put the serial number in for the CS3, I get a red X. I gave up at this point, and ordered the upgrade to CS5.5. Now, I am wondering, will the upgrade work if photoshop is not working? I just received CS5.5 Upgrade in the mail, but I am afraid to open it and void the possibility of a return, if the upgrade needs a working version of photoshop.
    Does anyone know if I all the components of CS3 have to be working in order to upgrade? Will the CS5.5 upgrade photoshop fail if the CS3 photoshop failed to install?

    If you registered, sign into your Adobe account and your serial number will be available there. If you didn’t and you still have it installed you can find it this way:

    If the answer to both is no, you’ve got a big problem on your hands and you’ve learned why you should always register your software.
