InDesign CS4 ME and Windows 8

I am using InDesign CS4 ME installed on a PC running Windows XP Service Pack 3. I am planning to buy a new PC running Windows 8.1 64 and would like to know whether I will be able to use InDesign CS4 ME on Windows 8, as it seems there are difficulties in installing and running InDesign CS4 that have been experienced by some.
Thanks

Windows 8 is not a supported OS for CS4 and you may or may not get the software to install or run. You are on your as far as solving problems.

  • Indesign CS4 task bar windows are inactive

I am using Indesign CS4 with Windows 7.  The tool bars in Indesign are inactive and won't allow me to select options from them.  Is there possibly a compatability problem with Windows 7 or is it something else that could be conflicting.  I'd appreciate any suggestions.

Yes, that does work.  I created a new standard account and went in through that account and can now access the toolbars.  The only problem now is that the screen items and fonts are now very difficult to see.  I am concerned that this problem may have been created when at one time under my own login account, I may have changed the screen resolution to see the screen better.  Do you think this could have caused my problem?  Thank you for your help.

  • Adobe InDesign CS4 Stops Working - Windows 7 Ultimate

I have a new computer with 8g of Ram running Windows 7 Ultimate, with an Intel i7 860 2.8 and everything has been working fine until an hour ago and now everytime I open InDesign and start working on a file, I get the error message that Windows has to close InDesign that it is not working properly.
I went ahead and made sure I had the latest updates, I removed the Preference file, rebooted and I am still having this same problem.
I also get a message when I start InDesign and Illustrator that I have to restart FMCore.exe has been stopped. Please start it form the Windows Control Panel for Universal Type Client and then relaunch Adobe InDesign CS4. I click OK and InDesign opens. I cannot find anywhere to start the FMCore.exe. I think it applies to a Mac computer.
Any help from anyone would be greatly appreciated. I may trying reinstalling InDesign CS4 but I am not sure if I should do so.

    Hi Peter:
I think the crash may be related to this file. When I opened another file and moved around InDesign acted fine. It appears that is crashes with this one file that I have been working on all day.
Any suggestions before I do a system restore, as to how to repair a file? The file keeps opening, but when I try to access a menu item or navigate to a different page, that is when I get the error. On the other file, I did everything and not a problem. I think it might be this file.
    Any thoughts?

  • InDesign CS4 not launching, Windows 7 64bit

Help.  We have a new PC with Windows 7 64 bit OS installed.  Adobe Premiere Elements and Photoshop Elements are installed.  Recently purchased InDesign CS4 and installed.  The sofware will not run, the splash screen comes up and then hangs at "Starting up Service Registry"
.  I have followed the documents from the forums and knowledge base.  The symptom changed to where it was still hanging on the splash screen but the text read "Completing Object Model".  Following the advice of Adobe I then ran the cleanup tool.  Reinstalled InDesign and now the splash screen comes up then the app crashes and Windows wants to send information.  This is getting rather frustrating considering this is a new PC and InDesigned was purchased last week and has not opened 1 time.  Any advice would be helpful.  Thanks.
    Rob.

    thanks for the reply.
I have renamed the SING folder, the TRUSTEER RAPPORT software is NOT INSTALLED on this system.
my symptom has changed after the last reboot.  the splash screen no longer hangs, the app crashes.

  • InDesign CS4 Export and PDF Printing Problem

Whenever we print PDFs created from InDesign CS4 documents that contain transparencies, drop shadows or gradients we've been having issues. White boxes will appear instead of the drop shadows and transparencies, and the colors of the gradient images will be completely different from what's in the original file. Of course, the PDF always looks perfect on the screen, and the .indd document prints correctly. The problems only occur when we print the PDFs.
We create the PDFs in InDesign using the File>Export function, and we've tried every version of PDF compatibility from 4 to 8. We're not exactly sure if this is an InDesign issue or an Acrobat issue, but we wanted to check and see if there's something specific we need to do doing during the exporting process to prevent this from happening.
Our IT department has been working on this but they're stumped, and the fine folks at Xerox insist that our printers are "fully operational."
We quickly looked through previous postings and didn't see another problem like this one listed, but we apologize if this has already been addressed and we are posting the same issue twice.
Any suggestions or insight anyone can offer is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Thanks Bob! I followed the information the links you provided and it solved our problems! I won't bore you with the details of how long how many different people have been trying to solve this issue, but let's just say it's a lot.
You are being virtually hugged and/or high-fived by our entire Communications, IT and Printing Departments. THANK YOU!

  • Indesign CS4/CS3 and Export to PDF problems

    Hello,
I have been having problems with both Indesign CS3 and CS4 and exporting large documents to a PDF-file. Exporting halts with error messages like: "Failed to Export the PDF file" in CS4 or "Error encountered while reading JPEG image" in CS3.
Problem can be corrected by simply closing InDesign and restarting it and opening the same file again. It appears that problem occurs more often the file is large. Any suggestions how to fix this problem?
I'm using Vista 64-bit and have 8GB memory.

Handling of missing links HAS changed, and in my opinion for the worse, but at the request of users, so that missing links no longer open the Links panel automatically or ask you to update on opening as they used to, though you should still receive a warning that the links are missing UNLESS YOU HAVE TURNED IT OFF IN YOUR PREFERENCES. It's on by default and you will find the option under the file handling section.
The rationale is that many workflows do not require that links be intact to accomplish the current editing, and longer documents with hundreds of missing links used to take many minutes to open while ID searched, essentially costing those users lots of money.
IF you have stored the links in the same directory as the .indd file, and IF you have moved the entire directory and IF you have enabled finding missing links when opening files, InDesign will find and update the locations for the links when the file is opened. If ID is unable to locate a link, because it is not in the current directory or a subfolder, you will see a warning message (in the past you would have had the option to browse for the missing files), and you must open the links panel if you wish to fix them manually.
In my opinion this is a very acceptable situation, and a great benefit to all types of workflows. I need to know links are modified or missing, so I've left that enabled. Those who don't need to know are no longer bothered or delayed. I suggest you pay a visit to the preferences and make sure that missing/modified checks are enabled, and if you are still having problems then your links aren't stored in the same directory, and that has always been an issue in ID when things get moved.

  • InDesign CS4 - Crashed and lost my morning's work !!!

I had the kind if event this morning which hasn't happened to me since the early 1990's. I lost a morning's work.
I recently got a new PowerMac and installed a brand new copy of Adobe Creative Studio CS4.
This morning, I opened a document in InDesign CS4 and worked for about 2+ hours on it, making design changes and text amends. As a design pro for almost 20 years I religiously click save after every change.
The document was a proposal for a sizable project which we were trying to get done by the deadline of midday.
Then InDesign crashed - I do not know the cause, the only unusual thing around that time was that the wireless router was getting rebooted.
When I restarted InDesign it offered me some options about salvaging changes in the document. I wasn't too bothered becaseu - as I said - I religiously click save after every change so crashes are unlikely to affect me.
But when I reopened the document - it was in it's original state from first thing this morning!
    How is this possible?
All I can imagine is that there is a bug related to the 'infinite' undo. Why else would a document go back 60 or more saves?
Fortunately, the last thing I had done was to create a PDF so we were able to make edits to that and send the doc by midday - but it was close!
Is it the case, with CS4, that I now have to return to what we used to do back in the early 1990's - instead of simply save a doc every few minutes, make a copy?!
Please can someone explain this to me or offer a suggestion. It nearly cost me an entire project!
    Phil

This is highly unusual. InDesign continuously saves a backup on its own. It is not like autosave in QXP. You do something... it saves a backup. There isn't an autosave setting that you directly fiddle with.
Look at your Preferences > File Handling > Document Recovery Data to find the location where it saves a backup copy.
I think it may be possible that you have some OS issues like maybe permissions problems. Since you describe a new machine and a new install; maybe it was not well-oiled and broken in yet.
My chicken-soup approach is to run Disk Utilities > Repair Permissions. It couldn't hurt to try that. You weren't running the file at distance across a network, were you? While some have no problem with that; many will experience problems. I always strive to work on the local disk volume.
There is no reason to try to click on the .idlk file. That so-called Lock file is a network WebDav gadget that doesn't allow someone else to open the file you are working on. It is not an InDesign file. It is not your backup file, either.

  • Having trouble with InDesign CS4, fonts and newspaper RIP

    Hi all,
I am the production manager for a student newspaper. We've been having random font issues where text is missing or replaced with Myriad ever since we upgraded from CS3 to CS4. Our printer is saying that we may have different font versions installed on different workstations. But the machines (Intel iMacs running 10.5) are all running the same disk image, and we had no font issues when we ran CS3 on them previously (indentical font folder on every machine).
Additionally, we've had similar problems with camera-ready ad files since moving to CS4. I can't control the fonts my customers use, so how to do I rectify this with CS4? In the past we never had any problems once we made a X-1a PDF that sanitized everything.
Are there any known issues with newspaper RIPs and X-1a PDFs generated from InDesign CS4? Everything looks, prints and preflights 100% okay in-house. I have opened an affected PDF on OS X, Vista, in Acrobat and Preview and printed on genuine PostScript (Ricoh SP C811DN and Ricoh SP 8200) as well as non-PostScript printers (a little HP 1012) and cannot replicate the issue on my end, so it seems like a RIP issue to me.
I could roll everyone back to CS3 but that would be a lot of work, and we really like CS4 otherwise ... so, any ideas?
Here is a PDF you can check out. Please let me know if you see any problems with it.
    http://spub2.uta.edu/pix/frontpage.pdf
Here is a scan of the printed page where fonts had randomly been replaced with Myriad:
    http://spub2.uta.edu/pix/markedup.jpg
    Preflight okay:
    http://spub2.uta.edu/pix/preflight.jpg
I'm not sure if it's kosher to mention the printer's name, but this is a big one who prints national papers and one of our big local dailies, not Crazy Jim's Discount Printing or anything like that.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Adam

    Adam,
OK, we've got your file here at Adobe. Although it preflights correctly for PDF/X, running a custom preflight profile with Acrobat 9 Pro shows font problems. (I've attached the preflight report.) The problems are not severe enough to prevent normal display and simple PostScript printing of your file, but possibly really doing a job with less forgiving software that your newspaper printer is using as part of their workflow.
Without knowing what that software and workflow is exactly, there isn't much I can do other than speculate. But there is something technically wrong with the
    Bureau Grotesque and
Miller Display font families you are using? Are they OpenType fonts? Were they originally in OpenType format or did someone convert them? Anyway, if you can get permission to send me off-list the content and fonts, we would love to analyze what's going on here!

  • Indesign CS4 - copy and paste issue

    Hello,
I just installed Indesign CS4 on a Mac 10.5.5 system and I am using Microsoft Word 2004 with the software.
The issue is when I copy and paste a graph or a clipart from Word 2004, I can paste the copied image in the INDD document. When I try to copy a second graph or image, Indesign will paste the original image.
I thought that clipboard may have been the issue and restarted the computer to empty the clipboard. Again, the same issue happens when I copied an image and the program somehow locks into that image.
Also, as soon as the graph/clipart is pasted in the indesign document, somehow, it becomes a link which should not be case if you are simply copying and pasting.
Here are some troubleshooting I tried:
    - I trashed the preferences folder from the library folder
    - created a new user account wiht admin priveleges
    - restarted mac in safe boot
    - created a new indesign document and a word document
    Any thoughts?

I am attempting to place images which I am using within a mailer onto the web.
I am copying the images from InDesign into Photoshop and getting the same issues. If I close Indesign and re-open it I can copy 1 set of images, but when I attempt a second it places the images I copied originally into the shapes of the second images.
Any clues on how to solve this issue?

  • Captivate 4 Flash export/import to  CS4 Pro and Windows 7 Enterprise

Every time I try and import my Captivate 4 project (latest Update) to Flash CS4 Pro (latest Update) I get a error Dialogue that says:
    Can't Load Library: 126.
I'm using Window 7 Enterprise and have full admin privileges on the system. Error message happens no matter the order of  opening both programs. Tried Import into Flash and also Export to Flash. Same result either way.
Any help on getting by this error would be great.
    Thanks in advance.
    Daniel McHugh

No solution yet. Any one experienced this before?
PS I've double checked the files: RDMFISTUB10.dll and external libraries file rdjsfl.dll are in the right spots (External Libraries and Importers) RDMFISTUB10 will restore itself if I delete it but not RDJSFL dll.
Problem persists even if I create files on local c: drive documents folder with external files or anything in the Captivate file.

  • Copying and pasting Arabic text in InDesign CS4 ME

We have an arabic document in pdf and word formats and we have InDesign CS4 ME and we are trying to copy and paste text from the pdf/word document but the font isn't transferring, there is nothing only boxes. We have turned on the arabic keyboard and that didnt help either. Working on a mac.
Can anyone help us? What is the solution?

    function(){return A.apply(null,[this].concat($A(arguments)))}
We have turned on the arabic keyboard and that didnt help either.
Well, why should it. Unless you are typing Arabic, that won't do anything at all. Copy-and-paste is not typing.
If copy-and-paste does not copy the font along so you get the pinky squares in InDesign, it only means that your default InDesign font does not support those characters. Select your text and then choose another font -- one you are sure of contains Arabic.
If you still get pink squares, it's more likely the text in the PDF is not encoded properly, and in that case no-one can't help you -- but it ought to work directly from Word.

  • Thin black line across Indesign CS4 doc exported to PDF

Hi ... am using Indesign CS4 on OS Windows XP and exporting docs to PDF (Acrobat 9 Professional) then printing on a HP Colour LaserJet CP2025.
I'm getting a thin black line across the bottom of the page when printing - it doesn't show up on the screen though.  The line sits 5mm above the bottom edge of the page and prints whether I have bleed set or not in Indesign.
Have tried toggling scaling, printer's marks settings, printer settings,Adobe Acrobat 9 Professional settings with no joy.
    Can anyone help?

    Hi all,
EUREKA!   Looks like it's finally fixed ...
One of my printer (HP Colour Laser Jet CP2025) has an advanced printer property, under printer features, called "Print Data Optimization" - this was set to "Auto" - I changed it to "Optimise for Text and Vector" and voila!  Thin black line has disappeared and I'm happily reprinting a bunch of documents ...
Thanks everyone for your advice and input - saved my sanity

  • InDesign CS4 Server serialisation

    Hi guys,
I'm installing a InDesign CS4 Server on Windows 2003 Server for Small Business Server, Service Pack 2. 4Gb available on C:drive,Intel Xeon 3.2Ghz, 4Gb Ram
The machine had InDesign CS3 Server installed previously.
    1. Uninstalled InDesign CS3 Server
    2. Rebooted Machine.
    3. Installed CS4 Server
    4. Installed latest Rapid Release
    5. Setup Win Service
and wondered why I wasn't prompted for the serial number at start of install. (ok, I hear you... should have read the read-me file first to see if anything in the installation process had changed...).
So I stopped the ID-Service and then ran the command-line serialisation at this point.
Checked in TaskManager no ID Server was running.
    However the serialisation hangs after:
    <pre>
    08/26/09 10:15:05 INFO  [server] Server Runnin/g
    </pre>
And the serialisation process seems to launch two processes at this stage: InDesignServer.com and InDesignServer.exe.
Which is right before this step... which is repeated twice and then the cursor just sits there... (doing nothing).

Before back-tracking fully and doing a complete uninstall and reinstall (and this time serialising after step 3), I thought I'd check if anyone had come across this and has a possible clue as to what's going in.  Any help appreciated.
At this stage I'm scheduling a full uninstall/reinstall for Thursday if things aren't resolved today (Wednesday).

That looks correct - InDesignServer is up & running, waiting for commands, or a control-c to quit.
InDesignServer.com is a shell app which launches InDesignServer.exe, so having both processes active is correct.
Once you have successfully serialized (as it appears you have), you should be able to restart either via the Windows service or at the command line without the '-serialnumber' parameter.

  • Indesign CS4 double click the file opens app. but not file

One of our systems that is running Win XP Pro SP3 with InDesign CS4 loaded and file associations fixed, when an INDD file is double clicked the application opens but the file does not. If we open INDD and go to file open and select the file it opens. Just not when double clicked. If I put the file on another system everything is fine. Anyone seen this before.

I'm pretty much at a loss. You might want to make sure that the open action is programed correctly in Windows.
Open Explorer and go to Tools > Folder Options... and scroll to .indd, then click the advanced button and select the Open action. Click Edit, and make sure that the "Application used to perform action" line includes "%1" (in quotes) after the path to InDesign. I believe the "confirm open after download" box should also be checked in the edit screen.
If that's OK, I'm guessing it has to do with SP3. Doe you have SP3 installed on the machine where it works?
