InDesign CS4 window fills screen at open

I just installed Adobe CS4 Design Premium version 6.0.3.  When I open a document using InDesign, the window nearly fills the 30" screen on my Apple HD Display.  I would like to adjust the window size so that it frames an 8.5"x11" portrait document with only a little margin all the way around.  When I do this and save the document, it always opens to the same, large window.  It would be much more efficient if I could set the window size to the desired dimensions so that it would open in that configuration and not in the large version.  I can't seem to make that happen.  Any ideas?  Thanks for any help you can give.  I'm running 10.5.7 on a Mac Pro (Early 2008) with 2GB RAM and plenty of hard drive space.

Not sure how this will come across, but here is the Javascript (it works in CS3) - with my apologies to the author, whose name I have lost:
//DESCRIPTION: Resets active window size or uses front window to set default size.
// Check for WindowDefault.txt; if present use it to set front window
// if not, use front window to set it after checking with user.
myPath = app.activeScript;
myParts = myPath.toString().split("/");
myParts[(myParts.length - 1)] =  "WindowDefault" + app.version.slice(0,1) + ".txt";
myNewPath = myParts.join("/");
mySettingsFile = File(myNewPath);
// Before proceeding, check that there is a front window
// If not, offer user the chance to delete the current settings
if (app.windows.length < 1) {
beep();
if (confirm("No window is open; would you like to delete the settings file?")) {
  // User said yes; check that it exists
  if(mySettingsFile.exists) {
   mySettingsFile.remove();
} else {
if (mySettingsFile.open("r")) {
  savedBounds = mySettingsFile.read();
  mySettingsFile.close();
  myBounds = savedBounds.split(",");
  for (i = 0; i<myBounds.length; i++) {
   myBounds[i] = Number(myBounds[i]);
  app.windows[0].bounds = myBounds;
} else {
  beep();
  if (confirm("Settings file is missing. Use current front window to set default?")) {
   // User said: go to it.
   new File(mySettingsFile);
   mySettingsFile.open("w");
   mySettingsFile.write(app.windows[0].bounds);
   mySettingsFile.close();

  • Upgrade from InDesign Mac to InDesign CS4 Windows, Is this possible?

    Hi all, I have Indesign CS2 Mac, now I am switching to Windows platform and i want to upgrade to Indesign CS4 Window. Is this possible from my copy and  serial number of InDesign CS2 Mac.

    MWHebert wrote:
    You had better hurry, as when CS5 comes out (sometime in April or early May) there is a very short grace period to do this. I found out the hard way and was too late and had no other choice than to pay to get CS4.
    It's not certain when InDesign CS5 might be released, until Adobe makes a formal announcement. You might want to discuss with an Adobe customer service SUPERVISOR whether you can make the cross-grade after CS5 is formally announced (not released, just announced), and also ask the SUPERVISOR whether your purchase of the cross-grade after the announcement will qualify for a free upgrade to CS5.
    Sometimes policies change, but, I believe that there's a period after announcement of a new release, before it's shipping, that by purchasing the outgoing release, you get a free upgrade to the announced release. I think there's a charge for a boxed product, but not for the downloaded product.
    I'm suggesting SUPERVISOR, because information of this kind often isn't made completely clear to regular customer-support folks. If a supervisor can't give you certain info, ask for the supervisor's MANAGER. Get the name of the person who gives you the info, so you have someone to work with if a problem arises.
    Buying an expiring product in the brief period between announcement of the next release and its actual shipping date, usually results in such a free upgrade. It's important for you to get accurate information about whether upgrading a product in this period works the same way..

  • Indesign CS4 double click the file opens app. but not file

    One of our systems that is running Win XP Pro SP3 with InDesign CS4 loaded and file associations fixed, when an INDD file is double clicked the application opens but the file does not. If we open INDD and go to file open and select the file it opens. Just not when double clicked. If I put the file on another system everything is fine. Anyone seen this before.

    I'm pretty much at a loss. You might want to make sure that the open action is programed correctly in Windows.
    Open Explorer and go to Tools > Folder Options... and scroll to .indd, then click the advanced button and select the Open action. Click Edit, and make sure that the "Application used to perform action" line includes "%1" (in quotes) after the path to InDesign. I believe the "confirm open after download" box should also be checked in the edit screen.
    If that's OK, I'm guessing it has to do with SP3. Doe you have SP3 installed on the machine where it works?

  • Itunes window fills screen cannot resize

    Somehow iTunes fills the whole screen and I am unable to resize it so that i can use other programs while surfing my music library. I went into preferences and unchecked the fill screen box and the window stays the same and the preferences when viewed again says that iTunes fill screen box is checked off. So now everytime that I want to view another program or internet feature I have to click the fourth button on the mouse in order to access other programs. Also when trying to update my iTouch, the downloaded software maxes out and then freezes returning an error statement stating the connection has timed out.

    the other question i was going to post was regarding why word, excel, powerpoint for the mac automatically start up on a restart of the computer. i have tried to find the preferences that regulate this but the problem still persists. it gets annoying to see all of the windows open up plus previous documents that have been closed prior to shutdown and/or restart. what is the shortcut that i can take to stop these programs from starting up during this process

  • InDesign CS4 - Windows 7 crashes when Edit Original

    Ever since I upgraded to Windows7 my InDesign CS4 will frequently crash when I click in an image to edit the original, usually the image is a psd. I did not experience this problem using Windows XP CS3. Since I upgraded both my Adobe suite and my operating system at the same time I am not sure who is the culprit.
    Has anyone else had this happen? Any ideas as to what is causing this?
    It certainly gets frustrating trying to get work done with this going on.

    I don't remember anyone else reporting this, and a forum search seems to bear this out, so this isn't a common problem and is likely to be something specific to your system. Are you getting an error message?

  • Indesign CS4 Windows - Locks up for 2-3 minutes

    Hello I'm a sytems support guy at an art school and I'm looking for some help with a pecular problem.
    We have about 500 PCs and 300 Macs where I'm located all of which are loaded with CS4 Master Collection. At the moment we have an issue with Indesign CS4 freezing when being used in Windows.
    The scenerio:
    A user logs into windows via active directory.
    They have 2 network shares automatically mounted.
    They start Indesign, it loads fine.
    After about 3-5 minutes InDesign completly locks up.
    Most students report that InDesign has crashed, which it doesn't, it just freezes.
    You wait 2-3 minutes and Indesign works again for an undetermined amount of time.
    System Stats:
    3 HP models: z600, xw6600, xw8400 (the problem is most noticable on the xw8400)
    Running windows XP sp3
    the xw8400 has 2 gigs of ram, a 160gb primary drive and an 80gib Temp drive.
    Quadro FX 1500 video card.
    All students have a network share drive that stores their prefences and any files they may need.
    (note that the problem arises both as local admin and as a student)
    I've tested Indesign after updating it and the error still occurs.
    I'm kind of stuck on a solution to this any help would be apreciated.

    First off, thanks for the quick reply.
    Yeah I assumed the network at first too, but when I used a local account the lock up still occurs.
    It's strange, even when starting Indesign with no file, no links, no objects, I can let it sit for a few minutes and it just freezes on it's own.
    I've also disabled preflight, auto correct, and dynamic spelling.
    Oh and I also noticed that it's not occuring on our z600s, which use the same network log in method.

  • Indesign CS4 OSX crash, usually when opening

    Hi,
    I'm running with latest osx and Indesign patches (clean install), but this happening 3-4 times per hour: com.apple.launchd.peruser.503[133] ([0x0-0x5f05f].com.adobe.InDesign[1851]): Job appears to have crashed: Bus error
    I uploaded one crash report:
    http://pastebin.com/CYuf7rWi
    (I found a related know bug in 6.0.6 update release notes
    "Known issues include the following:
    Users are unable to hide InDesign CS4 using the cmd+h keyboard shortcut.
    InDesign CS4 may unexpectedly quit when using the Place, Save, Save As or Export commands using either the OS or Adobe dialog boxes.
    To address these issues, download Mac OS X Leopard v10.5.6 or later from Apple’s web site."
    but i have 10.6.8.)
    Thanks for your help!

    Sorry, been letting things slip by...
    That said, I have no idea why it's crashing, perhaps John will...
    Well, this one is weird. If there wans't any narrative, I would have thought that the eyedropper tool was being clicked (LButtonUp in frame 14) and then it was failing somehow related to reading/writing attributes from the eyedropper.
    It doesn't sound like that's what you're doing.
    CS4 is getting kind of old, you might think about upgrading. Or at least trying with the free trial to see if CS5.5 works better for you?
    Sorry I dont have anything better right now...

  • Screen display issue with InDesign CS4 (Windows)

    I just upgraded from CS2 to CS4. I can open and use InDesign with no problems, until I try to switch to another application. Then, when I try to go back to InDesign, all I can see is the portion of the bar at the top of the screen that shows the link to Bridge, the view options and a bit of the outline of a palette or two. I have a two monitor setup. Most of the palettes are on the auxillary monitor and they show up just fine. The main display is where I'm having the issue. I can toggle in and out of Photoshop with no display issues. I haven't tried working with anything else from the CS4 package besides InD and Photoshop. This was not an issue with any CS2 product (Dreamweaver, Fireworks, InDesign, Photoshop, Flash). Nor has it been an issue with any of the other software I am running (so far).
    When the display vanishes, I can see the "data" from the program I was trying to toggle out of. For example, if I try to toggle between this page and InD right now, I can see most of this page except for the part of the page obscured by the outline of the control palette (that one reminiscent of pagemaker) and the little bits at the top. I can't see the project I'm working on. I can't see the File/Edit/etc. bar at the top of the page. A Control/Shift/Save will lock up the program completely. Then, I see the "save as" menu box (in addition to the browser screen around it) but the program is locked up. I can close everything on the computer and reboot and open InDesign to resume work--that is until I need to do something like edit a photo to drop into a layout. Then the issue occurs all over again.
    Windows machine; XP Pro, service pack 3 build 2600; NVidea GeForce 9600 GT graphics card.

    Bob, thanks for the info about the 6.0.2 patch. I'll try grabbing that today. This morning, on the first boot, I can't even see the program when I open it--just the snip of the command palette and part of the very top bar. Very irritating.
    Peter, I have tried maximizing, closing, reopening, etc. everything else I can think of. Same issue. I finally just bit the bullet and went back to CS2, rebuilding the current project so I can get the work done by deadline. I'll look for new video drivers this afternoon after I get back on track timewise on this newsletter. Weird that this display issue should just affect the one Adobe program though, and not the others if it is a video driver problem. I didn't do a lot of work in Dreamweaver--just enough to see if it displayed the same weird behaviour. Nope. Nor does Photoshop. Nor does Bridge. Nor does Acrobat. nor does any other software on the machine.

  • Indesign CS4 Premium  freezing when you open new document

    I have a serious issue with my CS4 Premium. Indesign freezes/crashes when ever i start the program and open a new document. I have deleted the prefrences folder, uninstalled and installed more than once, and tried all the troubleshooting steps on the Adobe website. I have also deleted the SING folder in fonts, deleted caches, and tried a trial version of indesign on my Mac but it has the same problem. This does not happen with other CS4 apps and I dont know what else to do but . I downloaded the update but it is not fixing it.
    2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    2GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM
    Mac OS X Version 10.5.6

    I just got off the phone with Adobe support. The problem seems to be with a file in the SING folder (Library > Application Support > Adobe > SING). When this folder was moved to the Desktop and InDesign restarted, the program operated properly.
    Then some additional investigation was done. After InDesign was shut down, the SING folder was moved back into the Adobe folder and opened. Inside the SING folder were a pair of nested folders: Mark II > Datastore. The file SINGmeta.dat inside the Datastore folder was trashed and the program restarted. Again it and worked properly. (Although, for some reason, a Sample Button library window was opened?! I've never used it.)
    One piece of background: the only difference between my earlier use of InDesign and my current use was that earlier I was working on a Mac G5. I transferred the files to a new Quad-Core Intel Xeon machine and couldn't open it there.
    Having spent several hours troubleshooting this, I hope this helps someone.

  • InDesign CS4 or CS5 will not open my CS4 file

    Please help! I have a large file for a newsletter I have been working on that suddenley refuses to open. I have been using CS4 and didn't have any problems until all of the sudden I just get a box saying "cannot open "name of file". I tried in CS5 on my home computer, won't open. I created it at work in CS4. I have no idea what to do. I can open the file from 3 days ago on my back-up drive, but every back-up'ed filed between then and now gives me this error. The error just happened yeaterday. I have lost 3 full days of work. Can anybody help me? This is a 44 page newsletter.
    Computer info:
    Model Name:    Mac Pro
      Model Identifier:    MacPro3,1
      Processor Name:    Quad-Core Intel Xeon
      Processor Speed:    3 GHz
      Number Of Processors:    2
      Total Number Of Cores:    8
      L2 Cache (per processor):    12 MB
      Memory:    4 GB
    My computer at home is a mac dual core also and it didnt work there either.

    Thanks. yes, I typically duplicate the file and delete everything I don't want. I have been using InDesign for years but I never got into using templates. I will look into them after this is finished. It just figures it would happen right at the worst time.
    This is a new contract and this is the second newsletter I have ever done. I duplicated it from the first one I did last quarter, but the first one I duplicated from a copy that was given to me by the company that handled it before mine and I have no idea if they did that too of what platform/version they worked from.
    I have already started fixing everything. I basically went back to my first draft version. I was ready to turn it over for final approval today. I luckly have a pdf that I exported on my last draft because I typically save drafts with _ver2 etc as PDF as I work and submit them for edits.
    PS...I have another newsletter I do that I have been duplicating for years, it has probably been duplicated 10 or more times. I'm not working on that one now, but I am not duplicating it again. I never even thought about it getting messed up from this habit.

  • InDesign CS4 Windows chrashing down while exporting

    I have a serious problem: a 74 pages strong document with text and graphics and when it's nearly finished it keeps crashing down without an error message.
    My PC features
    AMD Athlon dual core
    984 Mhz
    1,5 GB Ram
    Thanks for answers!

    Yes; some of the PDFs placed into the InDesign document were somehow faulty. Soon as I chucked them out there was no crashdown at all! Problem is: I am not the person that's created those PDFs in the first place, so I have to ask for all the pics and text and club them together into the InDesign document...As that does not create any problem whatsoever, I'm perfectly happy to have spent hours on end for I actually have come to a solution :-)
    Thanks!

  • If am trying to open Indesign cs4 files am getting error plugins required

    i have Adobe Indesign cs4, If am trying to open Indesign cs4 files am getting error plugins required, following plugins are required SCOTCH ROLES.RPLN, SANGAM SERVICER - MAPPER.RPLN, OTICAL KERING.RPLN etc
    After pressing ok again am getting error

    Go to Help > Configure Plugins... and make sure those listed in the first screen are listed and have a checkmark next to them to indicate they are active. That may fix the dictionary problem as well.
    You may also need to reset the prefs. See Replace Your Preferences

  • Indesign CS4 crashing when opening excel

    I am running Windows XP and when I have a document open in Indesign CS4 and I try to open an Excel 2007 document Indesign freezes up and becomes unresponsive. I have tried resetting the preferences, increasing the amount of virtual memory and the issue still persists.
    Any help would be appreciated.

    What are your system specs?  Particularly RAM, you need at least 2GB to start multitasking with Indesign....  And do you have spare space on your hard drive?

  • Cross References Being Lost InDesign CS4

    I am setting up cross-references in a multiple
    document book using InDesign CS4 (Windows).
    When our editors open the files using InCopy CS4
    some of the cross-references are broken (little red flag icon appears).
    I've relinked the cross-references several times but everytime
    an InCopy user opens the file the cross-references are lost again.
    The sources and destinations are within the same document.
    I'm using Paragraph number as the cross-referencing method.
    Does it have something to do with the InDesign files being part of a Book?
    Any help would be great.
    Thanks, Bill

    It's possible that being a book component file that's separated from its other component files has some effect.
    I believe that x-refs look for a coded marker to keep up-to-date, not the paragraph number, so even if the numbers get out of whack because they continue from a previous file, this shouldn't cause the problem.
    I don't know how x-refs appear in IC. Is it possible to hover over the error indicator and see an explanation of the problem? If so, please post the message.
    Do the x-refs become resolved when you return the document to the book in ID?
