• [CS3][VBS]Converting a CALS table to Indesign table in XML

Hi!

I have an xml-file with tables that I want to import into Indesign. It works fine when I use the Import CALS tables as Indesign tables in "Import options", but the problem is when I do this some emphasis elements inside the "entry" elements isn't found when I try to use XMLRules to format the emphasis elements in the document...
The structure of the table can be like this (in general):
Tabell
table
tblgrp
tbody
row

Some text...<emp Type = "bold">bold text</emp>

Some text

some text

row
tbody
tblgrp
table
Tabell

When I import the Table as CALS tables to Indesign tables, the table structure is collapsed into just a <Tabell> element. I assume this is the reason why the <emp> element isn't found.

I try to solve this by NOT importing CALS tables to Indesign tables. I see then that the whole table structure is intact in the structure panel and the <emp> elements are also found by the XMLRules, but the contents is not put inside a table in the indesign document. To put the table elements into a table in Indesign I use the Command: "ConvertElementToTable" but this doesnt work very well. I use it in XMLRules like this:

Public Property Get xpath()
xpath = "//Tabell"
End Property

Public Function apply(myXMLElement, myRuleProcessor)
With myXMLElement
.ConvertElementToTable "row", "entry"
End With
apply = False
End Function

Does anyone have any experience of importing XML-tables in Indesign and formatting them? I could really need some to put the xml table into Indesign tables...Please help!

In advance thanks!

Hi!
Just check the checkbox "Import CALS tables as Indesign tables" in the XML import options dialogbox. Then it should go automatically.
The problem with this approach is that the entire table structure is collapsed to a single table element in the struture. If one want to do some xml-prosessing at row or cell level one need to to this outside indesign or not import CALS as Indesign tables. The big question is if there is some easy way to convert a CALS table to an Indesign table inside Indesign after one have imported the data and prosessed the row and cell elements...
Hope anyone knows more than me about this....
Anyway, mkarthic, I hope my answer helped you to import your CALS tables!:-)

• Possible? SQL table link to InDesign Table

My company uses indesign for all of our work instructions. We have a database of our bill of materials - we export data from this database to excel, and dump that table into indesign. my question is - is there a way to link an indesign table directly to SQL, or if I set up a data connection in the Excel table, will it update dynamically when the indesign (or exported PDF) file is opened?

cgpl_project contains the information you are looking for for the promotion guid. Also you can link the crm_mktpl_attr.responsible to the but000 table on partner_guid to get the Employee Responsible name.

• Table Question: How do you make text in cell rotate?

Hi....
I'm working with tables for the first time. I'm doing a publicity schedule with a simple table.
On the top row..... I put in cells with diagonal lines, so I could fit it many publication along the top row. I got the diagonal lines in there. But, when I'm typing the names of the publications (that should go along those diagonal lines), at about 45 degree angle, it just types straight text that fills the cell. What am I doing wrong, or how do I achieve what I'm trying to do???

Look at the second comment for another method that may well work best for your purposes.

• Table question/problem

This is an html table question, but since I am working with
CF on this, I thought I would post here for help.
I query and cfoutput the data in a table. The table has ten
columns. The first five are alpha numeric and the last five are
numeric. The output displays fine.
What the want to do now is to put a black border around the
number columns, the last five.
I tried to make each column its own table, but that just puts
a box around each value, the columns are not connected.
How can I do this ?
Thanks for helping.

Put a thin black left border in the sixth column and a
similar right border in the tenth (last) column.
It is neater and advisable to use CSS.

The inline formatting will look like:

Do the same for the top border (last 5 column headers). The
bottom border may be trickier. The idea is to apply bottom border
at the last query count. One can do without the top and bottom
borders, however.

• InDesign Tables: Row and Column Strokes

Using InDesign Tables: How do you get row and column strokes in a table to appear perfectly joined? When I choose "Column Strokes in Front" (Under Table Setup) i still see a tiny row stroke, and vice versus.. it's really visible in the PDF almost can't see it in InDesign though you can a little...any advice?

• Do InDesign table fields convert to form fields for interactive PDFs?

Does InDesign CC recognize table fields as form fields when creating fillable form PDFs - or do I have to create individual text fields on top of the InDesign table and assign form field text field characteristic in the buttons and forms menu?

I don't believe InDesign itself will apply any form of automated recognition to table cells...BUT...Acrobat's form field recognition certainly picks up empty table cells and assigns them as text-input fields.

• Fastest way to fill an InDesign table with data

Hello,
I have to fill several InDesign tables with the content of my database.
I have the database in memory and fill the cells in two Loops (For Each row..., For Each col...).
But it is so slow! Is there a faster way?
Here a code snippet of the solution today:
For Each row In tableRecord
Dim inDRow = table.Rows.AsEnumerable().ElementAt(intRow)
For Each content In row
Dim cell = inDRow.Cells.AsEnumerable().ElementAt(content.Index)
cell.Contents = content.Value
Next
intRow+=1
Next
Thank you for help!
Best regards
Harald

Hi, Harald!
"This should be faster: table.Contents=Array. Or not?"
Surprisingly is was not. It was slower. A lot slower.
The array was gathered by (here ExtendScript(JavaScript) dummy code) :
myArray = myTable.contents;
Then I did operate on the array. Not on the table object or its cell objects. No direct access to InDesign's DOM objects. Just the built array.
My text file was written by populating it with a string of the array:
myString = myArray.join("separatorString");
separatorString was something that was never used as contents in the table.
Something like "§§§"…
After importing the text file I used the convertToTable() method providing the separatorString as separator for the first and second argument with the number of columns as third argument. The number of columns was known from my original table.
var myNewTable = myText.convertToTable("separatorString", "separatorString", myNumberOfColumns);
Alternatively you could also remove the table after building the array and assign "myString" as contents for the insertionPoint of the removed table in the story. I think I tested that as well, but do not know, if there is a difference in speed opposed to placing a text file with the same contents (I think it was, but not I'm not sure anymore). So I ended up with:
1. Contents of table to Array
2. Array manipulation
3. Array to String
4. Write String as file
5. Remove table
6. Place file at InsertionPoint of (now removed) table
Also to note: This was in InDesign CS5 with a very large table.
Things could have changed in InDesign versions with 64-Bit support.
But I did not test that yet. The customer I wrote this script for is still on CS5.

Hi All,
InDesign CS3.
Im working on NLM-DTD, When im importing the xml file into indesign template, i have checked the option "Import CALS table as Indesign table". So it is transfered to table format, after finished the pagination, i want to export the xml file, now the formatting of the table cells (italic, bold, etc) are not coming properly. so i have troubled with this.

Hello,
Thanks.
Yes, that worked fine. But the small XML file below, containing some titles and a table, does not work. I assumed that I could drag and drop the <informaltable> element onto the page and get a rendered table.

• Ignore cell boundary in InDesign table?

Is it possible to have the text in an InDesign table cell ignore the boundaries of the cell walls without merging cells?

Sure, but without using Merge Cells (why not?) you'll have to cheat a bit.
You can place a single cell table in a cell -- see image -- because, famously, table cells may run outside any border of its parent (even text frames).
You can also put your text into a new frame of its own and cut-and-paste that into a cell (on afterthought, that might be a bit easier).

InDesign table cells don't break across pages the way they do in Word. It's all or nothing.

• How can I find overset text in a InDesign table and locate the page?

I am currently using CC but see the same issue in CS5 as well. If text within a table is overset or cannot be displayed, I can use search/replace for a term that I know is in an affected cell, however InDesign will find the first instance but will not automatically navigate to the page. Instead it remains on whatever page I happened to be on.

• InDesign workflow question for longer document (book)

I'm new to Indesign and have read through the help topics and searched around but I can't seem to find an exact answer... I may be phrasing my question wrong.
I have a complete book in basic text (txt). What is the desired (or best in your experience) way to start work. In my mind I want to import the text as a whole, populate all pages, then I want to come back and format chapters and add images.
Everything I try doesn't support my idea (I am new to this software and I may just be approaching this incorrectly.) I also come from a different background and a different tool set so any advise would help.

To elaborate on Simon's answer, this is my workflow for straight-on books:
- Make a basic set of Master pages. You will need at least a single set with page numbering and, optionally, headings.
- Load all text. You will get lots and lots of pages, because it's still unformatted, but that's okay.
- I usually cut off front matter and put each item on a page of its own, so tiddling with it won't cause reflow of the entire document. You will need at least a title page and a reverse; "proper" books have a minor title page, a (c) page, a proper title page, and a blank. (Grab any one from your bookshelf that you like and copy its layout for these.) My first "true" flowing page is the first page of chapter 1. Remember to insert 2 pages (or perhaps more -- an even number) for a table of contents.
- Go through the main text from first to last page, applying basic formatting, paragraphs, subtitles, etc. -- the plain text works. Make and use paragraph styles for each unique format -- do not (or at least as possible!) apply local formatting. Use character styles for italics and bold in plain text.
- Go through the main text again, applying formatting to each new chapter. Insert page breaks (Odd Page Breaks for right-hand starting chapters) where appropriate. If you use Odd Page Breaks, insert them before
i every
new chapter (or use the "Break On Odd Page" Keep Option) -- i.e., not just when you seem to need one. It will change if you reformat or add picchers.
- Go through your text
i again,
this time adding all pictures, tables, etc. You can do the previous steps in any order you like, but this one must be done from front to back. If you have right hand chapters and the one before it has no text, make that one completely blank (i.e., remove header & page numbering).
- Tidy up the front matter and generate the contents.
- Remove the extra blanks at the end. These were the overspill from the plain text import.
- Sit back 'cause you're done!
As you see, your own ideas weren't bad at all.

• InDesign 2 questions

I had heard at a seminar there were some downloads for InDesign 2 which would make our life easier at the newspaper where I work. Where could I find them on the Adobe Web site?
Also, are there compatibility issues between InDesign 2 and 3? I was thinking of downloading a version of 3 to see what new things have come out, but if there are compatibility issues I don't want to be designing pages and stuff with it.
Thanks!
Larry See
Relatively new user

Peter,
given the current economic situation of most newspapers, it is reasonable to not replace 100s of working computers mainly used as typewriters, upgrade all software and push the staff thru retraining every other year, just to follow the latest fashion in software advances. Heavy metal people are used to think in 10 year or longer investment cycles.
Larry,
as Peter said it would help to know whether you really mean InDesign 2 (blue butterfly on blue background) or InDesign CS2 (pink butterfly on white background). The startup screen will also give you the numbers.
Next, please tell us your OS (Mac or Windows), and whether you're working with an editorial system and eventually which. Indicators are login windows, extra menus that are not in the regular manual and feel more like "business", newspaper specific rather than "creative".
There should also be some person at the help desk / user support or even management that knows these nifty details. Before you get into downloads and such, you should anyway talk to these people whether it is ok at all to install additional software.
Independent from the version, there are two kinds of additional software:
Plugins are modules created by programmers, the same way as internal InDesign functionality. Assuming you really have InDesign 2, back then there have been only few plugin developers with few products and even if you find them these old versions are most likely out of support. For example I had only two plugins for ID2 for image related tasks, and the earliest version that I have built in the past two years was InDesign 3 (CS). Another disadvantage of plugins is that they usually have a price tag - no free downloads off the Adobe site.
Scripts are written in simplified programming languages, often the authors are regular/advanced users. They also may come as source code so you could adjust them to your use. Note that InDesign 2 only supported AppleScript (Mac) or VisualBasic (Windows) while a large share of scripting is nowadays done in JavaScript which was introduced with InDesign 3.
You could definitely download example scripts in these languages from newer versions, strip out all the added functionality not supported by your version, adjust some more required changes and eventually end up with something useful. This of course depends on whether you can spend the effort (time) and go thru the learning curve to become a scripter. There is a dedicated forum for that next door. As you say you're relatively new, it helps to first know the program from the user side. Note there are books even covering such old versions - see eBay or Amazon.
Back to the initial questions. If you have an editorial system there might be a user group around with similarily old installations, where other people already have built a collection of scripts. Try to get in touch with them.
Regarding compatibility from newer to older versions, you're mostly out of luck here because documents prepared in newer versions at best require conversion before you can use them with your old system, dropping all newer features and likely causing reflow and other trouble in the existing workflow. If you have isolated, special tasks (tables? fancier graphics effects?) you could of course produce a PDF and place that like an image.
Best luck,
Dirk

• In InCopy, how can I paste from one InDesign table to another without also copying formatting?

I'm attempting to paste information from one indesign document to another, but the styles are different. Pasting without formatting not working in a table. When I paste over, it retains the container style from the original table.
I have "Text Only" selected from my Clipboard Handling preferences, so I'm not sure what else to do. I know I can hit escape to switch to the text selection instead of a container, but this only selects the text from one cell. I'd like to copy over the entire table, instead of copying cell by cell.
How can I paste a table into another, without copying the formatting?

Copy/Paste whole cells will always retain formatting.
What you have to do is: Copy/Paste Without Formatting the text contents of the individual cell.
You have to do that individually for each cell, if you want to copy over text of a whole table.
A better approach would be to:
1. Copy the whole table to Excel (or a different spread sheet application)
2. Copy again from that
3. Select one single cell and paste
In that case "Text Only" should be selected from the Clipboard Handling Preferences.
