Indexing a NAS across two systems for Spotlight

Hey all. I work for a graphics department of small business. The resident IT guy doesn't know anything abut the Macs that we use for all our designwork, so its kinda up to me to figure out all this stuff here as the resident nerd among my coworkers.
Anyways, we currently have two systems in the office, a 2012 Intel iMac running OS X 10.7, and a dinosaur orignal Power Mac G5 running 10.5. We have a ton of files spread across both systems, and use Spotlight to pull up stuff we need quickly (as I'm sure most of you do as well XP)
However, despite both systems being on the asme network with sharing enabled, we can't index the others drive to enable spotlight searching of the other systems content. This makes sense as I don't believe OS X is able to index another systems internal drive. So I was thinking of getting a NAS, consolidating and moving all the content we use from both systems onto said NAS, then indexing that drive on both desktops, alowing us to easily spotlight search for everything we normally use on both systems.
I know you can easily set up a local USB or Firewire drive to be indexed via Terminal, but I'm not sure if the same thing applies to a NAS. Googling around has brought up some conflicting conjectures from multiple sources. I figure before I drop $150 of company money, I'd get a second opinion if I'm on the right track here ^_^;
Thanks for your time, appreciate any advice you may be able to provide!

  • How can I make OSX index a network share for spotlight?

How can I make OSX index a network share for spotlight?
I am using a QNAP NAS with SMB network shares, which I mount with OS X Mavericks. They are not searchable, as far as I know because of the indexing of network share is by default not activated.
To force the OS to index them I activated this via mdutils. But this is no solutions. This makes spotlight to index the share once. But I want spotlight to index it always and keep it up to date. I have a huge amount of documents & fotographs, which is very difficult to manage without being searchable.
Unfortunately the only solution I found in the www was the mdutils-way, which seems not to work, maybe only works not for me.
    I would appreciate any assistance,
    Thank you,
    Stefan

My thanks to everyone who has contributed to solving this problem here.
It appears that there still is NOT a good, reliable solution.  Please correct me if I'm wrong.
I did find this on http://jonathansblog.co.uk/how-to-enable-spotlight-indexing-on-a-network-drive:
    ===================================
To enable spotlight indexing on a network drive:
    # mdutil /Volumes/name -i on
To disable the indexing of a connected network drive:
    # mdutil /Volumes/name -i off
To check the status of indexing on a connected network drive:
    # mdutil /Volumes/name -s
    ===================================
And, I found this on the Synology NAS forums:
    cd /Volumes
    mdutil shareName -i on
    mdimport -Vp ./shareName
where shareName = name of your share
I have used the mdutil /Volumes/name -i on, and it seems to work.
But, if I understand it correctly, it is a one-time indexing -- the index is NOT keep up-to-date with changes.
So, how can we keep the index up-to-date?
My thought was to schedule a Terminal file to execute each night with the mdutil code.
Would this work?  If so, how would you setup a scheduled run?
Would it have to be done on each Mac that accesses the Share?

  • How to Generate Synchronized pulses across two separate cards on a PXI system

    Hey,
I'm trying to generate three pulses from my PXI System for triggering purposes. I have two cards (PXI 6259 and PXI 6115) , each with two counter/timers on them. The 6259 has 32 bit timers, and the 6115 has 24 bit timers.
Up until now, I only needed two pulses. One was 180us long at 20 Hz, and the other is 5us at 20 Hz, starting 150us after the beginning of the first pulse. I was able to achieve this by generating both pulses on my 6115 card by triggering the shorter pulse off of the rising digital edge of the longer pulse and giving the DAQmx Counter/Timer task an initial delay of 150us.
The third pulse needs to be identical to the short pulse, only it needs to occur 20us early (130us after the start of the wide pulse). I tried to generate it using the same technique as I used when generating the short pulse, only generating the pulse and reading in the rising digital edge trigger on my 6259 card instead of the 6115.
The result was that my pulse trains were asynchronous and the pulse generated on the 6259 card was constantly shifting to the left.
This puzzled me, so I wrote up a little dummy program to test generating triggered pulses. The results were that when I generated two pulses on the same card, they were always synchronized; however when I generated pulses on separate cards, one of the pulses always shifted.
I was hoping somebody could suggest a reason that the pulses across cards are asynchronous even though I'm reading in a digital trigger and hopefully a way to rectify the situation and synchronize all of my pulses.

The problem, in a nutshell, is that the timebases on the two boards have manufacturing tolerances that will cause them to differ from one another.   The accuracy error is a small fraction of a percent, but the effect on the phasing of your pulses will be cumulative.  That's why you saw the one set of pulses "shifting to the left."
The solution is to make sure each board derives its pulse timing from a single common timebase.  Fortunately, this is pretty easy to specify with DAQmx, just a little tricky to find.  In the chain of VI's you call to configure the counter pulses, insert a DAQmx Channel property node.   From memory, I *think* you should be looking under something similar to "Counter Output->General->Timebase->Timebase.Src"
Right click and create a constant or control to define the timebase source.  You should get a dropdown list that includes a wide variety of choices.  Among them are each of the boards' 20 MHz clocks.  By default each task will use a timebase from its own board but this technique lets you route one board's timebase over the PXI backplane with that single property node setting.  DAQmx does most of the dirty work behind the scenes.

  • Get Spotlight to index a NAS disk?

Is it possible to get Spotlight to index a NAS disk? (Or should it do this normally but it's not working properly?).
I have a NAS disk permanently connected to my Mac (LaCie Ethernet Disk Mini) & every time I do a search on there it will churn away searching but not return any results.
Actually it seems like it might be a bug because as well as not returning any results once I've closed the Finder window it will still continue churning away searching (I can hear the disk activity).
It will continue until I reboot the computer.

OK, the Terminal is a the way that you access UNIX shell commands (the Mac command line interface). Instead of clicking on things you have to type the actual command into the "prompt" hit return, and then the shell executes the command. So you go to the Utilities folder and double click Terminal to launch it. Exactly what you see when it finishes launching will depend on how you have configured it, so it won't be exactly what I see, but there will be some words of encouragement and then the prompt, where you will type things:
Last login: Tue Mar 20 14:06:01 on ttyp1
    Welcome to Darwin!
    -bash:~francine$
The "$" is where you start typing, or you can copy and paste things in also. You would then type:
    sudo mdutil -i on /Volumes/YOURDRIVENAME/
You must make sure everything you type is exactly as given, thus you may want to simply copy and paste this:
    sudo mdutil -i on /Volumes/
and, making sure there is no space after that final "/" character, type the name of your drive exactly as it appears in Finder. If the name has any spaces in it be sure to surround it with quotes:
    sudo mdutil -i on /Volumes/"MY FAT DRIVE"/
Then hit the Return key. You will be asked for your admin password, and given a little lecture (this is only delivered the first time you use a sudo command). The password you type is not echoed to the screen in anyway whatsoever, so type very carefully and when you finish hit the Return key again. You'll then get the notice that indexing is enabled. Type the word exit, hit Return, and then quit Terminal.

If you want to add a second partition to the internal drive (in Disk Utility, select the drive, then open the partition tab and just click the + button), you should first be sure that you will have enough room to accommodate whatever the second volume will be. I am currently doing this for Snow and Mountain Lion.
To get to whatever volume is not the startup disk, restart and hold down option/alt at the chime, which will bring up a selection of the two volumes. Use the left or right arrow keys to select it and then hit enter/return.

  • Two entries for every technical system for XI in SLD

    Hi,
Last weekend we had a patch upgrade in our Production env for SAP PI system.
After that we got the Cache error (Cache notification from Integration Directory failedError when accessing the System Landscape Directory) in RWB -- "Cache Connectivity Test -> IR -> ID -> Adapter Engines".
    And
In SLD->Technical Systems->all (Adapter Engine, Integration Directory, Integration Repository, RWB).
    e.g.:There are two Adapter Engines:
    Adapter Engine on p80.p80xxxxx
    and
    Adapter Engine on p80.p80xxxxx\p80
Our Basis team contacted SAP for help & SAP has suggested as below.
"We compared the SLD->Technical Systems for QA (Q80) and PROD (P80), and found that for the production box (P80), each XI component is registered Twice.
Now as per the note 764176, we have to delete the entries in the SLD -> Technical Systems. And these will be re-created after a restart.
Could you please let us know whether these have been maintained for any special reason or we can go ahead and delete them."
If you have any idea if those two should be maintained or not, please suggest how to proceed.
    Thank you & Best regards,
    Farooq.

    Hi Farooq,
I have faced the same issue and got resolved by 764176.
you can go ahead and implement the note 764176 which will resolve your issue.

  • Calling two diferent R3 systems for same RFC

    Hello Everybody,
    My scenario is:
I have one RFC in two different systems. this is the same RFC available on two systems. I want to call this RFC from the Web dynpro application. System will be determined at runtime to call this RFC.
If user selects System XYZ then using hte same RFC model, RFC should be executed on XYZ. If user selects System ABC then using hte same RFC model, RFC should be executed on ABC.
Can we achieve this using single RFC model in one web dynpro application?
If not, then can we create two RFC models containing same RFC?
    Regards,
    Bhavik

    Hi Bhavik,
Use these links for ur requirement.
The logical target system name is configured in the Web Dynpro Content Administrator.
With the configuration of the Portal page, you pass the following URL parameters with the Web Dynpro application. These parameters are then taken into account when the application is started.
    sap.wdarfc.useSys=<DEFAULT_SYSTEM>:<SUFFIX_OF_MAPPED_SYSTEM>
If several systems are to be mapped, the parameter sap.wdarfc.useSys can be repeated any number of times within a URL entry. One parameter entry is made for each logical system.
The URL parameters for the Portal page are maintained as described in the Administration Guide of the SAP Enterprise Portal.

  • EWA Report not being sent for two systems

    Hi Experts,
We are having one issue in EWA Report in solution manager. Searched hard but could not find solution.
Our solution manager is configured to provide EWA for 4 systems- ECC, BW, PI and Solution manager itself.
The configurations are in place to the extend that we are able to view the weekly reports in Solution manager.
    Issue is -
    1. We are able to recieve mail notification for Solution Manager and ECC but not able to get for BW and PI.
    2. The ECC report is coming ok, but Solution manager report is blank.
The places I checked the configuration -
    1. SDCCN for all systems.
    2. SOLMAN_EWA_ADMIN - all systems active and chcked for EWA
    3. Background Jobs for all systems -Maintenance Package, Refresh Session, Earlywatch Alert for Solution Manager
    4. Background Jobs related to the task including SM:EXEC SERVICES
Later on I deleted and rescheduled the job SM:EXEC SERVICES to make sure it covers all systems.
Data is visible in Solution Manager but report is not being sent over mail for two systems- BW and PI.
Solution manager report is being sent but empty.
    Please suggest.

  • % DB increase differs for two system from the same landscape

    Hi all ,
I have done upgrade and then unicode conversion for the two system- sandbox and development  from 4.6 C to ECC 6.0 with oracle 10 G and AIX 5.3
On sandbox % db( used db size in DB02 ) increase is 60 to 80 which is as per SAP figures after unicode conversion however on dev it is almost 150 % .
Has anybody faced the same problem before or can you suggest somthing for this tremendous data growth
Also what I have observed is threre are 7 tablespace on sandbox and 8 on Dev with "PSAPSR370" as the additional one on DEV ( PSAPSR3700 is different )
    Please help me on this
    -Ganesh

    Hi Ganesh,
the database growth depends heavily on the content. Which languages do you have installed in your system and which  modules are used by your company?
I think the normal growth should be in a range of zero to 30 percent. The lower end comes from the reorganization effect due to the migration and 30 percent comes due to the fact that most data is normally numeric and numbers are the same with or without Unicode. But in rare situations it could be possible to see much higher values. The reason is, that Oracle, and also DB2, are using UTF-8 encoding if you're running your system as Unicode system. In UTF-8 a two byte Unicode character could be encoded in up to four bytes. That means if your systems contains lots of double byte characters it could grow much more than 30% but it seems unusual to me.
Are you sure that nothing was wrong with your migration?
    Best regards
    Ralph Ganszky
