Industrial engineer study about Database System

Hello, i'm Industrial engineering student now. I want to ask all of you. Is valuabel if i learn about Database System in my major?

Oh i'm sorry about that. Now i'm studying Industrial Engineering in scholar Program. I live in Indonesia. As employee, Industrial engineer can improve efficiency in many aspect in the enterprise. So, is there any chance that i can improve efficiency Database System? Coz, in semester 5 i had study about Information System. On one contracting job, my boss had been an industrial engineer, so then he was a project lead. We became good friends, even though he introduced me to my wife :-) (wife's stepfather and he had worked together at an aerospace company previously). Certainly his background helped in project implementation.
As to improving database system efficiency, it is yes and no. No, you aren't likely to get into internals and compete against people with CS doctorates, but yes because applications do need an eye towards efficiency, and applications are where the money goes. As with so many things, it's the combination of technical ability and another kind of analytical ability that make you valuable to business. Business analysis goes through cycles and fads, what was once called business process reengineering will be called something else and have its gurus (just this morning I got an email about how BPM can improve my business). Just don't fall for any pie-in-the-sky internet entrepreneurs who promise to have the next SAP, go mainstream first, with at least what we in the US call a Masters degree.

  • Question about OO Systems

I've been wondering this for a while now.
I had to design and build a software system for college as a project and i was going to design the classes attributes methods etc. but then i realized i would need a database to store the information and i could simply build an application on top of the database and query, update and store any information that was needed. I simply could not see any need for using OO design. I asked my lecturer about it and he agreed with me so that didn't help!
Can anyone tell me why we need to organize data in objects when we already have a relational database system?
Cause i really don't get it.

I would say that the conclusion in the above is false.
Object type databases have been around for a long time and they are used very seldom. So seldom that it is effectively zero.
And certainly nothing that I have seen would suggest that object query languages are going to pervade the market in an significant way.
This is in constrast to relatively recent idioms that have in fact have made extensive impact on the industry such as Java, C#, XML, Agile, functional programming (and additions to existing languages to support it). The first four came into existence after object type databases and the last has been gaining interest over time.
At best learning about object type databases is more of curiosity than anything else. Learning assembly is probably more useful even though using it is as likely (for most industries.)

  • Where to learn about database tuning from?

    Hello,
I need to learn more about database tuning - practical aspect. Are there any sites/services that could help me? I can't use production environment of course, I need to prepare my own ones (Oracle DBs on linux and windows too) and workload too. How to simulate workload from many users?
    Thanks in advance for help

How do you learn to paint? You can read every book on the subject, attend lectures by famous artists on paints and brushes and styles and what not..
None of this will turn you into an artist that can paint. Theory only goes that far.
And this is as true in performance tuning as in painting. You need to run into that brick wall called experience over and over again - and each time learn hard lessons that no theory can ever teach.
If performance tuning was that easy, we would have had fully automated tuning software in operating systems and database systems that could detect and fix all our performance woes on the fly.
    Does not work like that.
Also, performance tuning is many times seen as an "after the fact" thing. Design the system. Code the software. Implement it. Then tune it.
Wrong. Also does not work like that.
Performance tuning begins at the very first workshop when brainstorming the basic design of the system. If performance and scalability are not part of that process, they cannot easily (if at all) be made to be part of the final system as a tuning exercise.
If I need to pass a single fundamental "uber-alles" principle for performance tuning - when dealing with it after the fact (as many of us do), then it is:
    Identify The Problem
Do not confuse symptoms as the actual problem.
PS. Performance tuning is also many time (IMO) a situation where you have lost. Why? Because of if the code was designed and coded correctly, then there would not have been a performance issue. If the Oracle architecture was understood correctly, there would not be a problem. Which makes the advice by the other 2 posters so important. Understand Oracle. Understand how to design and code in Oracle. If done well, what is there left to performance tune?

  • Few basic questions about database administration

    Hello,
I have a few basic questions about database administration.
    1. I switched one of my oracle instances to archivelog mode. I just cannot locate the archive log files on my windows system. The %ora_home%/ora92/database/archive directory is desperately empty...
2.What is the tools01.dbf datafile used for?
3.What is the undotbso1.dbf datafile used for?
    Thanks in advance,
    Julien.

    1. The archive log location needs to be specified in your init.ora file. By default, Oracle will place the archive files in either ORACLE_HOME/dbs or ORACLE_HOME/database.
    2. The tools01.dbf file belongs to the tools tablespace which should be set as the default tablespace for system. It primary purpose is to hold Oracle Forms and Reports database objects, however, it should also be used for holding other non sys database objects such as the perfstat (statspack) or other third party database schemas e.g. quests sqllab.
    3. undotbs01.dbf file belongs to the undo tablespace.

  • Study: Oracle database software has more flaws than SQL Server

    Hi,
Study: Oracle database software has more flaws than SQL Server
Microsoft is often unfairly slammed for security issues, says NGSS
    http://www.computerworld.com/action/article.do?command=viewArticleBasic&articleId=9005383&intsrc=hm_list
Post your comments on this stupid artical.
    Thanks!
    M T

This is a case where size does matter.
When they say errors reported on oracle are about 4 times more than the ones reported on SQL server they forgot to say something like: SQL server is able to do... what a 10%, a 5% or whatever of what oracle can do.
Anyway who sayd this forgot to say that they worked with microsoft trying to improve SQL sever security features as well.
    http://www.nextgenss.com/press-releases/ngs-and-the-sql-server-security-essential-guide/
They have a reason to say it. Who would say "I made a bad job!"
In my opinion there is no way yet to compare oracle to any other DBMS under any point of view.

    Hi Sweta,...
yes the above ans is correct... you can make a simple report using class interface 'CL_GUI_FRONTEND_SERVICES'
It will not provide such details that u had asked for, but it gives some very important system info tht can be useful ......such as
    GET_COMPUTER_NAME                          - Get Computer Name
    GET_DESKTOP_DIRECTORY                  - Get Desktop Directory
GET_DRIVE_FREE_SPACE_MEGABYTE     - Returns Drive's Free Space in MB
    GET_DRIVE_TYPE                                    - Get Drive Type
GET_FREE_SPACE_FOR_DRIVE          - Returns Free Space on Drive
GET_GUI_PROPERTIES                               - Returns Stream of GUI Properties
    GET_GUI_VERSION                                         - Returns the Upload/Download Paths
    GET_IP_ADDRESS                                         - Gets IP Address
GET_PLATFORM                                    - Return Operating System Platform
GET_SAPGUI_DIRECTORY                            - Gets GUI Start Directory
GET_SAPLOGON_ENCODING                       - Return to saplogon Codepage
    GET_SYSTEM_DIRECTORY                     - Get System Directory
GET_TEMP_DIRECTORY                            - Returns the Path to the TEMP Directory

Making report to display this parameters will be very simple task.
    Hope this will be usefull

  • Looking for an XML-enabled database system

    Dear all,
I am looking for a RDBMS (Relational Database Management System) that provides management of XML data in a relational fashion.
I found the IBM DB 2 XML Extender. However, I am not sure if this system is already in use (because the latest release was in 2003).
I would be very grateful to you if you could help me to find what I am looking for.
PS. For RDBMS handling XML data, we find two categories: XML-enabled systems (they store XML data using a special data type like BLOB, CLOB,...), or the native XML systems (which stor XML data in its hierarchical structure, so the fundamental unit of storage is XML document). So, I precise that I am looking for an XML-enabled system and NOT a native XML system.
    Thanks in advance.
    Best regards,

    Thanks for your help,
To be more clear, I am looking for an XML-enabled database system (which provides only relational techniques to manage XML data).
Oracle is a Hybrid system (it means that it provides both native and relational fashions to manage XML data, e.g. you can store XML document as XMLType column (native way) or using BLOB data type (relational data type). I am collecting information about the three broad categories of XML database systems (native, XML-enabled, and Hybrid), and I would like to give example of each system. For example, there is BaseX and eXist-db for the first category (native systems), Oracle and IBM DB2 for the third category (each of theme manage XML data in both native and relational fashions). However, for the second category (XML-enabled systems), I don't find more information about the existing systems, there is for instance postgreSQL which is an XML-enabled system, but I don't find more information about its architecture, its XML data storage model, API for querying and updating, and so on.
Please don't hesitate to help me if you get some documentation about postgreSQL or about another XML-enabled database system.
    Thank you again.
    Best regards.

utilitities-database utility->then click activate and adjust database.
else you can use SE14 and so that Index will create databse level.

    Hi Mohan,
After any change in the existing structure of the table you need to adjust and then activate it.

  • Index does not exist in database system DB6

    Hi,
Problem : <b>Index does not exist in database system DB6</b>.
I need further explanation why when i transport index from Development Client to Production Client the index is active but does not exist in database system DB6.
So when the cases is occurs i must re-create the index again in Production Level...
Can someone give me some ideas?
    Thanks.

    Hi,
it might be due to some BUG in RDBMS...
First Check the Secondary index in TEST system
Look at the Transport Number in DEV system, If this is having error, then it will show you the error details also,
If that not moved Properly then you need to create another request for the INDEX and move it again
See the threads with similar problem...

  • How can i  get data from anather database system  ????????

    Hi every body..
    I 've a problem .....
I've an old program work on "DOS" and it's content database which content all Data that i need for that program
The data file extension with ".FD" , ".VW" , ".LSS" & "SLP"
    I want to kow:-
    1) what is that database system
2)What program could open or can get data from that database tables.
3)can i do that with oracle...
please describe every thing in details...
    ... Please replay quickly... urgently
    ...waiting your answer....

You're probably better off consulting the documentation for the DOS program you're trying to deal with than hoping someone here will be able to guess what program you're using, identify the structure of the files, and tell you how to extract the data into something Oracle can import.
