Infinality fontconfig fallback fonts
I'm brand new to linux and have been muddling through setting up my system for the last few days. I'm using termite which to my knowledge as a VTE-based terminal should support fontconfig. The font I'm using in termite is Phallus' Lemon font. Now while I was configuring ncmpcpp I wanted to use a glyph that I saw in some configs that looks like ░ for the progressbar. However this glyph isn't in the lemon font and so displays as a filled-in-box instead. I then found another font called Tewi which has a simliar looking glyph. When I changed my termite font to Tewi and use the glyph I would like, it shows up fine.
Is it possible however to use Lemon as the font and if there is a glyph that isn't supported to have it use the Tewi glyph instead? Like a sort of fallback. Use x font, but if glyph y isn't in font x then use font z for that glyph only. I think this sort of thing is possible using fontconfig? However I'm unsure of how to set up the appropriate rules for this to say, for bitmap fonts I want to use Lemon first, then Tewi.
I did try to read the fontconfig wiki about this issue but I couldn't understand it very well. I'm not sure where to make these type of changes, if they're even possible, while using Infinality.
Thanks for any help!
AFAIK you'd have to edit the Lemon font - fontconfig can't swap fonts for individual characters.

Internal unicode fallback font?
I really tried to figure this one out by myself, but…
Firefox displays exceptional unicode characters in a specific, seemingly internal font. Here’s an example, both glyphs are taken from unicode block “Miscellaneous Symbols”:
☠ (SKULL AND CROSSBONES, 9760)
☃ (SNOWMAN, 9731)
Go ahead and open this page in another browser, perhaps a pre-installed Internet Explorer. This is a rendering taken from my machines: http://i48.tinypic.com/e0ipes_th.png
I tried out all my fonts (some of them really, really unicode-supporting) with these glyphs and others, and none of them were an exact match. It doesn't matter what font-family is set in CSS. Firefox overrides the missing glyphs. You can’t inspect the calculated font-family when omitting it.
I didn't find anything when searching, since this is not a problem like “Firefox not rendering unicode font correctly”, but the opposite.
What’s the solution? What’s the name of this mystical font and where do I find it?I never thought of a simple addon, extending the page information. With a process of elimination, I figured out it was Segoe UI Symbol. Thank you very much!

[Solved] Powerline font 1px too high, using fontconfig w/ infinality
Hey guys,
I'm using the Termite terminal emulator which uses fontconfig for font rendering options. I'm also using vim powerline.
I use the Monaco font and have installed the otf-powerline-symbols-git package.
This is what my powerline looks like up close. As you can see the symbols appear to be 1px too high.
Here's my font config
<?xml version="1.0"?>
<!DOCTYPE fontconfig SYSTEM "fonts.dtd">
<fontconfig>
<!-- Use Monaco for everything monospace -->
<match target="pattern">
<test qual="any" name="family"><string>Consolas</string></test>
<edit name="family" mode="assign" binding="same">
<string>Monaco</string>
</edit>
</match>
<match target="pattern">
<test qual="any" name="family"><string>Courier</string></test>
<edit name="family" mode="assign" binding="same">
<string>Monaco</string>
</edit>
</match>
<match target="pattern">
<test qual="any" name="family"><string>Courier New</string></test>
<edit name="family" mode="assign" binding="same">
<string>Monaco</string>
</edit>
</match>
<alias>
<family>monospace</family>
<prefer>
<family>Monaco</family>
<family>Consolas</family>
</prefer>
</alias>
<!-- Monaco is a little bit to large, making fallback fonts look small -->
<match target="font">
<test name="family"><string>Monaco</string></test>
<edit name="pixelsize" mode="assign">
<times><name>pixelsize</name>, <double>0.9</double></times>
</edit>
</match>
</fontconfig>
It doesn't seem like there's a fontconfig option to move the font's baseline down. Any ideas?
Last edited by EvanPurkhiser (2013-08-10 02:45:35)Thanks bohoomil, I tried changing this setting (it was already set to true since I'm using your infinality bundle!) but it didn't seem to have an effect.
It looks like I can fix this alignment issue by actually editing the OTF symbols font with fontforge. But it would be much nicer if there was some kind of setting I could change so I could use the upstream font.
Edit: Reading through the issues, it looks like it's common practice to just accept that the font needs to be edited on a per-system basis.

[SOLVED] Infinality font bundle not working correctly in urxvt / xterm
I've been using Infinality fonts, and installed them from this:
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/In … le%2Bfonts
The fonts look great in every application, except for terminals (urxvt / xterm, but most likely others as well).
In my .Xdefaults, I have:
*urxvt*font: xft:DejaVu Sans Mono:pixelsize=14,style=regular
But using this setting just displays some ugly fallback font, and I got similar results when trying Monospace and others.

I've gathered that the output of "xlsfonts" should include the names of my infinality fonts, but it doesn't look like it does:

I've also tried rebuilding the font cache with "fc-cache -f", but no dice.
I don't understand why fonts work correctly everywhere except for urxvt. Does anyone have any ideas?

[SOLVED]Infinality - blurry font
After installing arch new with old /home I installed under Xfce the following
freetype2-git-infinality lib32-freetype2-git-infinality freetype2-infinality
and the font got blurry.
On firefox it's looking ugly as well, here're some examples:
krusader, http://imgur.com/jbxuC
libreoffice, http://imgur.com/vEapa - menu shows only rectangles
Installed xf86-video-ati 1:7.0.0-1 and xorg-server 1.13.0-4.
.xlog shows the following errors

That's working for me, thx Doc! -
Perhaps I'm just misunderstanding something, but it seems like Firefox doesn't handle font fallback the way that I would consider to be correct.
Instead of respecting the font-family list defined in CSS, it appears to just take the first font from that list and use whatever fontconfig returns as the best match. In most cases, this is fine, but sometimes the first font listed in the CSS is one that I don't have, and in that case fontconfig returns something bogus, completely unlike the requested font. I understand why it does this, but in the specific case of rendering web pages, it would be preferable for the browser to just try the next font in the CSS list instead of blindly going with fontconfig's "best match".
Chromium seems to do the "right thing" in this case, so I know that it must be possible for Firefox as well. But it seems that no matter what I try, Firefox simply refuses to use anything other than the first font listed in the font-family list. This kind of defeats the whole purpose of having that list, doesn't it? Web designers shouldn't have to worry about specifying obscure fonts in CSS as long as they provide sane fallbacks.
I know about adding alias rules in fontconfig's config files so that fonts that I don't have will render using some other, similar font. But my /etc/fonts/local.conf is getting very large with all of my special case rules, and yet I still run into webpages, on nearly a daily basis, where the fonts are clearly wrong. If Firefox would just respect the way that CSS is supposed to work in this case, this wouldn't be necessary.
Am I the only one that sees this problem? Is there some configuration setting that I'm just stupidly overlooking here? Or am I stuck forever adding zillions of special rules to fontconfig for all the obscure fonts that web designers decide to use?

Actually, I think I explained the problem poorly, and I omitted some relevant information from the original post.
To illustrate:
$ fc-match 'DejaVu Sans'
DejaVuSans.ttf: "DejaVu Sans" "Book"
$ fc-match Century
DejaVuSans.ttf: "DejaVu Sans" "Book"
I don't have a font called "Century" installed, so fontconfig just falls back to its default, which happens to be DejaVu Sans. That's fine in the general case.
Here's a webpage with `font-family: Century, serif` in its CSS: http://goertzel.org/dynapsyc/yamaguchi.htm. So if Century is not available, Firefox should fall back to the default "serif" font set in the Firefox preferenes, which in my case is Times New Roman.
Instead, I get this ugliness: http://tmh.cc/img/ff_ugly.png
If I use Firebug to change the first font in the CSS font-family list to "DejaVu Sans", it looks good: http://tmh.cc/img/ff_dejavu.png. Or, if I just remove Century from the list entirely, so that it just says "serif", the I get Times New Roman, as expected: http://tmh.cc/img/ff_times.png.
So it seems that Firefox is consulting fontconfig for the first font in the CSS list, as I said before. But when fontconfig just returns its default font (or more likely, if the fontconfig value is too far off from what Firefox wants), then it's not using fontconfig's font, nor is it falling back to the second font in the CSS list. It just uses something completely different, and quite ugly.
My custom rules in /etc/fonts/local.conf are just a bunch of these:
<!-- Replace Times with Times New Roman -->
<match target="pattern" name="family">
<test name="family" qual="any">
<string>Times</string>
</test>
<edit name="family" mode="assign">
<string>Times New Roman</string>
</edit>
</match>
Each of which maps a font name that fontconfig doesn't match properly to a font that I actually have. But having to add so many of these rules specifically for Firefox when other applications, even other web browsers, seem to have no problem is very irritating and seems unneccesary. I suspect that I'm missing something obvious, hence this thread. -
I need to use the infinity symbol in Illustrator but it is not available in Illustrator in CS5 running on Windows 8.1. It is available in Illustrator 10 running on Windows XP. Is there any way to access the INFINITY character under fonts in Illustrator in CS5 (Windows 8.1)?
Thank you for your suggestion. But I do not know how to access UNICODE. How do I download Unicode fonts?
Also I have a problem working copying illustrations from Illustrator launched from CS5. The illustration does not copy correctly into FrameMaker 10 with Windows 8.1. However, the illustration copies correctly if I use Illustrator 10 in my computer with Windows XP. How do I solve this?
When I called Adobe I was just told that they do not support CS5. -
Font selections displayed wrong after installing Infinality
Not sure where I went wrong but now when I choose a font in some apps (hexchat and xfce4-terminal at the moment), the font that I selected will not be the one that the app shows I selected. It appears that the correct font is being used after the selection however.
Here are the contents of /etc/fonts/fonts.conf if that helps:
<?xml version="1.0"?>

Need help identifying why my fonts look horrible
I reinstalled Arch on my desktop, but forgot to backup my font configuration files. I had Monaco set up very nicely before, but now it looks horrible on my new install, and I can't really see what I'm doing wrong. As far as I know, I was just using the ttf-monaco, freetype2-infinality and fontconfig-infinality (w/ osx2 style) packages, and then modified the infinality.conf file (with emboldened Monaco) and Xresources.
This is what it looked like before:

I haven't used termite myself, but either reverting to an older revision than a05fdcd4d15316f258175e9a526058bad2c8e7ea or just enabling bold faces through the said config option could be a solution to your problem.

[Solved, install dejavu font] Libre Office fonts are rendered as boxes
Been a while since I've posted and thank you in advance for any help offered.
My issue is pretty straight forward: all my menus and fonts in Libre Office Writer show up as boxes instead of letters. I have searched the wiki and forums for a solution but most people who have this problem fix the issue by installing the right language pack.
As you can see below that isn't my issue:
local/libreoffice-common 4.1.4-3 (libreoffice)
common files for LibreOffice - a productivity suite that is compatible with other major office suites
local/libreoffice-en-US 4.1.4-3
English (US) language pack for LibreOffice
local/libreoffice-writer 4.1.4-3 (libreoffice)
Word Processor Application for LibreOffice.
I have no plug-ins installed apart from hunspell, mythes and hyphenation. I removed these packages but there was no change.
This machine is a Dell laptop with the Intel video chip and thus I have the correct driver installed and everything else works fine:
:root: ~ : pacman -Qs intel
local/intel-dri 10.0.2-1
Mesa drivers for Intel
local/xf86-video-intel 2.99.907-2 (xorg-drivers xorg)
X.org Intel i810/i830/i915/945G/G965+ video drivers
I tried nuking my Libre Office directory in my home directory but that yielded no change. My .gtk-* directories don't contain anything specific to LO.
These are the only fonts I've added to this install (thanks boohoomil) and are not customised in any way:
local/cairo-infinality-ultimate 1.12.16-3 (infinality-bundle)
Cairo vector graphics library with respect-fontconfig, expose and Ubuntu patches (infinality-bundle)
local/fontconfig-infinality-ultimate 2.11.0-15 (infinality-bundle)
A library for configuring and customizing font access (includes generic fontconfig package and ultimate settings by bohoomil).
local/freetype2-infinality-ultimate 2.5.2-3 (infinality-bundle)
TrueType font rendering library with Infinality patches and custom settings by bohoomil (infinality-bundle).
I have gone so far as to try snapwm and Xfce4 but there is no difference in the font rendering in LO.
I'm stymied about this because I have used this setup previously on this and two other machines. Any ideas?
MS
Last edited by MoonSwan (2014-02-03 04:54:16)I thought of that but, as I use the infinality-bundle, which fonts do I need to test this hypothesis? Or can you suggest one I can install from the official repos?
[edit] Just after posting this I remembered that LO, as noted on the wiki somewhere, suggest one install the ttf-dejavu font. After installing this font everything is now showing correctly.
@nomorewindows, Thank you very much! I feel a bit silly but I learned something from this and for that I grateful to you.

[SOLVED] Qt 4.7 - 4.8 and bad fonts hinting.
Hi, since the upgrade to qt 4.8, font rendering of qt applications seems very bad to me.
Before the upgrade, firefox and konqueror looked the same, here is now,
I tried in graphicssystem native and raster:
http://ompldr.org/vYnZ2Mw/firefox1.png
http://ompldr.org/vYnZ2NQ/konqueror_native1.png
http://ompldr.org/vYnZ2NA/firefox2.png
http://ompldr.org/vYnZ2Nw/konqueror_raster.png
http://ompldr.org/vYnZ2Ng/konqueror_native2.png
I tried autohinter too, but gtk apps (cairo) seems always better, what happened?
My .fonts.conf:
<?xml version='1.0'?>
<!DOCTYPE fontconfig SYSTEM 'fonts.dtd'>
<fontconfig>
<match target="font">
<edit mode="assign" name="rgba">
<const>rgb</const>
</edit>
</match>
<match target="font">
<edit mode="assign" name="hinting">
<bool>true</bool>
</edit>
</match>
<match target="font">
<edit name="autohint" mode="assign">
<bool>false</bool>
</edit>
</match>
<match target="font">
<edit mode="assign" name="hintstyle">
<const>hintslight</const>
</edit>
</match>
<match target="font">
<edit mode="assign" name="lcdfilter">

</match>
<match target="font">
<test name="family">

</test>
<edit mode="assign" name="hintstyle">
<const>hintslight</const>
</edit>
</match>
<match target="font">
<edit mode="assign" name="antialias">
<bool>true</bool>
</edit>
</match>
</fontconfig>
Last edited by kokoko3k (2011-12-30 14:16:23)I casually managed to solve this issue by playing with fontconfig settings.
I'm really not sure if this is the correct way, but now i've the same font rendering i've had before qt 4.8 with hintstyle=hintslight.
My Steps are:
yaourt -S freetype2-infinality
* do not install fontconfig-infinality
edit ~/.fonts.conf as follows
<?xml version='1.0'?>
<!DOCTYPE fontconfig SYSTEM 'fonts.dtd'>
<fontconfig>
<match target="font">
<edit mode="assign" name="rgba">
<const>rgb</const>
</edit>
</match>
<match target="font">
<edit mode="assign" name="hinting">
<bool>true</bool>
</edit>
</match>
<match target="font">
<edit mode="assign" name="autohint">
<bool>true</bool>
</edit>
</match>
<match target="font">
<edit mode="assign" name="hintstyle">
<const>hintfull</const>
</edit>
</match>
<match target="font">
<edit mode="assign" name="lcdfilter">
<const>lcddefault</const>
</edit>
</match>
<match target="font">
<edit mode="assign" name="antialias">
<bool>true</bool>
</edit>
</match>
</fontconfig>
the trick seems:hinting+autohint+hintfull=hintslight (!?)
edit /etc/profile.d/infinality-settings.sh and add/replace with those values:
SET_XFT_SETTINGS=true
XFT_SETTINGS="
Xft.antialias: 1
Xft.autohint: 1
Xft.dpi: 96
Xft.hinting: 1
Xft.hintstyle: hintslight
Xft.lcdfilter: lcddefault
Xft.rgba: rgb
export INFINALITY_FT_AUTOFIT_FORCE_SLIGHT_HINTING=true
export INFINALITY_FT_FILTER_PARAMS="06 25 44 25 06"
export INFINALITY_FT_GRAYSCALE_FILTER_STRENGTH=0
export INFINALITY_FT_GAMMA_CORRECTION="0 100"
export INFINALITY_FT_BRIGHTNESS="0"
export INFINALITY_FT_CONTRAST="0"
export INFINALITY_FT_AUTOHINT_INCREASE_GLYPH_HEIGHTS=false
export INFINALITY_FT_AUTOHINT_HORIZONTAL_STEM_DARKEN_STRENGTH=0
export INFINALITY_FT_AUTOHINT_VERTICAL_STEM_DARKEN_STRENGTH=0
export INFINALITY_FT_AUTOHINT_SNAP_STEM_HEIGHT=0
export INFINALITY_FT_FRINGE_FILTER_STRENGTH=0
export INFINALITY_FT_WINDOWS_STYLE_SHARPENING_STRENGTH=0
export INFINALITY_FT_CHROMEOS_STYLE_SHARPENING_STRENGTH=0
export INFINALITY_FT_STEM_ALIGNMENT_STRENGTH=0
export INFINALITY_FT_STEM_FITTING_STRENGTH=0
export INFINALITY_FT_STEM_SNAPPING_SLIDING_SCALE=0
export INFINALITY_FT_USE_VARIOUS_TWEAKS=true
export INFINALITY_FT_USE_KNOWN_SETTINGS_ON_SELECTED_FONTS=false
export INFINALITY_FT_GLOBAL_EMBOLDEN_X_VALUE=0
export INFINALITY_FT_GLOBAL_EMBOLDEN_Y_VALUE=0
export INFINALITY_FT_BOLD_EMBOLDEN_X_VALUE=0
export INFINALITY_FT_BOLD_EMBOLDEN_Y_VALUE=0
Now logout/login.
Starting from there, you can further tweak infinality
Ah, openoffice also looks good out of the box, no need to install extra '*uglyfix*' packages
...and chromium still sucks like nothing happened.
-EDIT-
Remember to not change the hintstyle, leave it to hintfull.

How to make firefox render fonts as google-chrome does? (screenshot)
How do I make firefox render fonts as google chrome does as shown in screenshot? (Chrome below and firefox above)
Notice for instance the dash "/", "Explore", "Features" etc and the text at the bottom "added git_fixes".
I'm no expert but is it antialiasing that makes the difference? Cause it seems the font is the same, right?

I have ttf-win7-fonts installed, and also recently I've installed Infinality (haven't configured it, necessary?).
Advice appreciated.bleach wrote:
well in firefox you can chose your font and then unclick the let sites chose there own fonts.
ya looking at your picture I do see the diff. but I do not have that pixelation in my firefox.
.Xresources has nothing to do with gtk
I do want to let sites choose their own fonts though.
When I look closely on my screenshot I wonder if it's even the same font though (the "3" looks very different).
Perhaps that's where the problem lies.
If I force firefox to use Arial, it looks good. If I set it to Helvetica which seems to be the font used, it looks like in the screenshot - pixelated.
$ fc-match helvetica
helvR12-ISO8859-1.pcf.gz: "Helvetica" "Regular"
Seems it doesn't use truetype (helvetica.ttf?) as default font for helvetica - shouldn't it? -
Not all the fonts get smoothed

It's not the only text on Web I meet that is not smoothed. 98% of text has great smoothing, other 2% doesn't have smoothing and looks ugly. How to fix it?Mr. Alex wrote:The headline of the article is not smoothed
I assume you're missing:

Anyway, see Gentoo fonts thread for the state-of-the-art in font rendering - currently, Infinality's freetype patches. -
[solved] Bad glyph alternates using "Nimbus Sans L" font in Firefox
Hello,
I am observing strange font rendering in Firefox when text is displayed in the Nimbus Sans L font-family. For example, the selected font on duckduckgo.com is Nimbus Sans L on my machine. Any query result that contains "No" or "TM", inluding inside words such as Notebook or HTML will be substituted for № and ™, or №tebook and H™L. This is a nuisance. It does not happen in LibreOffice with the same font and the same text.
Using Firefox's web console, I edited the CSS and took the following screenshots. On the left is the CSS left alone, and on the right, I removed Nimbus Sans L from the font-family property:
I also wrote this test html file and rendered it in Firefox.
<!DOCTYPE html>
<html>
<head>
<title>Font test</title>
<style type="text/css">
p {
font-family: "Nimbus Sans L";
p.a {
font-family: FreeSans;
</style>
</head>
<body>
<p>A test</p>
<p>No Note HTML</p>
<p class="a">No Note HTML</p>
</body>
</html>
<screenshot>
</screenshot>
I ran out of hypotheses. I haven't found anything helpful in:
infinality/fontconfig files
Firefox's about:config
This: https://hacks.mozilla.org/2010/11/firef … e-support/
and of course, google, ArchWiki, ArchForums, etc.
Thank you for any support and have a good day.
Alexandre.

The sub-pixel rendering is fine. It's rather the automatic replacement of glyphs in the wrong context that is bothering.
bohoomil wrote:Does this happen to ligature (e.g. ff, fi, fl, ae, etc.) as well?
Interestingly, ligatures are happening automatically with FreeSans for ff, ffl and such, but not ae or oe. There was no such ligatures with Nimbus Sans L.

Font fringe (blur) in terminal [SOLVED]
I succeeded to get rid of font fringe in Firefox by using:
$ cat /etc/fonts/local.conf
<?xml version="1.0"?>
<!DOCTYPE fontconfig SYSTEM "fonts.dtd">
<fontconfig>
<match target="font">
<edit name="antialias" mode="assign"><bool>true</bool></edit>
<edit name="hinting" mode="assign"><bool>true</bool></edit>
<edit name="hintstyle" mode="assign"><const>hintfull</const></edit>
<edit name="lcdfilter" mode="assign"><const>lcdlegacy</const></edit>
<edit name="rgba" mode="assign"><const>none</const></edit>
</match>
</fontconfig>
but I can't get rid of it in any terminal where I can set the font size and background color, which means lxterminal and gnome-terminal.
I really need this, please tell me how could you set up your terminal with no font fringe, a normal 12 points font and white on black colors in X Window?

Wrong. There is no simple, magic button marked "remove font fringes" that you can press.
The sad reality is that font rendering is a horrendous historical mess of compromises, becauses monitors are roughly 100 dots-per-inch rather than the 600 DPI that we would like.
What you get with Infinality is better rendering in general, and more tweaking ability. But this takes effort, on your part.
The compromise ends up being a little bit of fringing. E.g. with small, bold Helvetica. An option is to turn the sub-pixel rendering off, to remove the fringing, but that looks worse to me.
Fonts also vary wildly in quality. In my terminal I've been happy for years with the Liberation Mono font.
I finally begin to understand. Thank you.
P.S. Where is this lxappearance saving its configs? Of course, no man.
EDIT: By using find to search for modified config files while I modified settings in lxappearance I found out that the settings for fonts are modified in `/home/user/.config/lxsession/LXDE/desktop.conf` (and they are full of references to gtk).
