Information from within a Bean?  Auto Increment

I am currently using 9iAS as my app server and Oracle as my db for a project. In order to get the next PK in a CMP bean I have created the code snippet below. What I was wondering is it possible to get the Initial Context Factory, the Security Principal, the Security Credential, the Provider Url, and the Data Source Name from within the CMP Bean, so I wouldn't have to pass them in or hard code? Maybe through the handle perhaps?
public static long getNextPK(String initialContextFactory, String securityPrincipal, String _securityCredential,
String providerUrl, String dataSourceName, String _sequenceName) throws Exception
long l = 0l;
Statement st = null;
Connection con = null;
Hashtable env = new Hashtable();
try
env.put(Context.INITIAL_CONTEXT_FACTORY, _initialContextFactory);
env.put(Context.SECURITY_PRINCIPAL, _securityPrincipal);
env.put(Context.SECURITY_CREDENTIALS, _securityCredential);
env.put(Context.PROVIDER_URL, _providerUrl);
Context context = new InitialContext(env);
DataSource ds = (DataSource)context.lookup(_dataSourceName);
con = ds.getConnection();
String query = "SELECT " + _sequenceName + ".NEXTVAL FROM dual";
st = con.createStatement();
ResultSet rs = st.executeQuery(query);
if(rs.next())
l = rs.getInt(1);
if(!rs.wasNull())
//System.out.println("getNextPK() returned "+ l);
rs.close();
catch(NamingException ne)
//ne.printStackTrace();
log.error("Naming Exception: ", ne );
catch(SQLException se)
log.error("SQLException: ", se );
throw new Exception(se.getMessage());
finally
try
if(st != null)
st.close();
if(con != null)
con.close();
catch(SQLException sqe)
//sqe.printStackTrace();
log.error("SQLException: ", sqe );
return l;
}

For Oracle 9ias the documentation says:
Defining an Auto-Generated Primary Key
If you specify a java.lang.Object as the primary key class type in <prim-key-class>, but do not specify the primary key name in <primkey-field>, then the primary key is auto-generated by the container.
For eg.
<enterprise-beans>
<entity>
<display-name>Employee</display-name>
<ejb-name>EmployeeBean</ejb-name>
<local-home>employee.EmployeeLocalHome</local-home>
<local>employee.EmployeeLocal</local>
<ejb-class>employee.EmployeeBean</ejb-class>
<persistence-type>Container</persistence-type>
<prim-key-class>java.lang.Object</prim-key-class>
<reentrant>False</reentrant>
<cmp-version>2.x</cmp-version>
<abstract-schema-name>Employee</abstract-schema-name>
<cmp-field><field-name>empNo</field-name></cmp-field>
<cmp-field><field-name>empName</field-name></cmp-field>
<cmp-field><field-name>salary</field-name></cmp-field>
</entity>
</enterprise-beans>
Once defined, the container creates a column called autoid in the entity bean table for the primary key of type LONG. The container uses random numbers for the primary key values.
WHAT I DONT LIKE or probably not aware of is the disconnect between the oracle DB generated sequence and the container using random numbers to generated prim keys. If 9ias can auto generate a random number then I feel it should also allow us to specify what sequence from the DB if any, we would like to use... thats my 2cents worth

  • Can I change the record an EJB points to from within the bean?

    I have a problem which I hope someone can help with.
    I'm programming an EJB application which references several 'price list' type tables. An order will contain several option selections, which reference options, which each have an associated price. A system administrator is going to have to change and update these prices as tim egoes on, and may want to remove options etc. In order to ensure that existing orders don't have their values changed as a result of this we've decided that, when options have their price changed, we actually create a new option record, setting an end_date on the old option record to signify that it's no longer valid for new orders being raised. In the option Beans set cost method, I set the end_date property of the bean and call the create method of the options own home interface.
    My problem is this: At the moment I return the newly created option as a return value of the setCost method but I feel this is a little graceless. Ideally I'ld like to change the bean to point at the new record as part of the set method itself, that way, to the client it would appear as if tey were still looking at the same bean but with an updated price, which is what you'ld normally expect from a set method. Can this be done?

    Um, yeah - graceless is a good word. Essentially, you've stuck business logic into the EntityBean (I'm guess that's what you're using for data persistence). What you need to do is move the Option.create() method out of the EntityBean and use a StatelessSessionBean to execute the logic: update the old Option record, create the new one, then return the result.
    As an aside, it's considered Not Very Good Practice to have client applications directly accessing EntityBeans: serializable DataObjects (e.g. JavaBeans, not EJB) or ValueObjects (non-"changeable" DOs) are better at passing data back and forth between client applications and application container. Ideally, this flow is like this:
    client <- VO -> SSB <- DO -> EntB
    This lets the EntityBean just worry about getting data in/out of storage, the (business) logic resides in the StatelessSessionBean and the client interacts/shows the data.

  • How can I access a control's description and data range information from within LabVIEW 6.1 or 7.0?

    I didn't see an obvious way of accomplishing this. Is this possible?

    Right click on the Control and navigate to Create>Property Node. Now on the newly created node, right click on it where it says Visible and navigate to Properties>Description. This will output a string of the controls description. Now grow the node by right clicking and selecting Add Element. On on the property, right click and navigate to Properties>Data Range>All Elements. This will generate a cluster with all the range info.

  • Consume Webservices with AXIS from within WebAS

    I have problems invoking Web Services from within a bean running in WebAS. I am using Axis to create the calls to the WebServices.
    From a WebService_A running on WebAS 6.4 I want to call WebServices both running on the same server (WebAS 6.4) and on different servers (e.g. Axis).
    If in the endpoint I use the server machine's IP address, I get a server Timeout (502), if I use the machine's name I get the message "Unknown Host". Only when I call a WebService within WebAs and use "localhost" in the endpoint address, do I get the desired result.
    I have already described the problem of calling a web service on a different server in the topic below,and have also tried to configure the servers proxy settings as described (which however showed no effect):
    Proxy Settings for WebService invocation
    As for the generation of proxies (Developer Studio generated deployable proxies) I do not know if they would work for calls on a different server (e.g. Axis), because Developer Studio for some reason would not generate the proxy for the Axis-generated WSDL file (no detailled error message). However I cannot use the generated proxies anyway, because I need to call on endpoints which are provided from a GUI, so I must do the calls by hand - or can I reset a proxy's endpoint?
    Does anybody know which additional settings I have to set (Axis Engine, or in WebAS Administration?)
    Every hint would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi,
    You don't need LCDS/FDS/BlazeDS to consume a web service. All
    you need to do is to use the WebService component.
    Hope this helps.

  • Retrieving Webcenter User Profile information from portlet programmaticaly

    Hi guys,
    I'm triing to retrieve WC user profile information programmatically from a jsr 286 portlet but:
    ADFContext.getCurrent().getSecurityContext().getUserName(); ----> always return anonymous
    ADFContext.getCurrent().getSecurityContext().isAuthenticated() ----> always return false
    (i'm obviously authenticated on webcenter with my profile)
    Anyone knows what the problem is or how to retrieve webcenter user profile information from within a portlet?
    Thank you.

    thank you for the reply, but that issue seems not resolved.
    I hope there are other ways to retrieve user information.
    Anyone knows if there is a way to retrieve programmatically user profile from a jsr286 portlet inside webcenter?
    Edit:
    i've tried passing this parameter to the portlet : #{webCenterProfile[securityContext.userName].userName}
    I can retrieve from the request object and the username is correct, the problem is that i need the whole profile (i have some logic that are dependant on user email, lastname etc), and adding all profile attributes as parameter seems to me not the correct solution.
    I need a way to access the user profile directly from the portlet.

  • How to get the client's IP address from within Java Studio Creator JSP/Java

    Hi there.
    I just started using the Java Studio Creator 2 and now I need to get hold of the client IP address - this should be part of the request, but I cannot fint the right way to get hold of that information. I want to be able to access this information from within the Java-code in a JSP/JSPF-page.
    Is there a new way of doing:
    request.getRemoteAddr();
    This is the way I remember it from the JSP/Servlet-days...

  • Retrieve new row's auto-increment key from dataprovider

    ** cross posted on SDN JSC Forum and Netbeans J2EE Nabble forum **
    I have a page that is bound to a MySQL table rowset or, alternately, a new (append()'ed) row. The row's Primary Key is a MySQL auto-increment Integer (translates to a Long.) After commit()'ing the the new row to the database, how would I then get the new row's ID (fieldname "ID")? If I refresh() the dataprovider and try to get the value an error is thrown.
    Some background: The dataprovider's backing rowset has a query parameter for the ID field. I set it to "0" if the page is creating a new row or I set it to the unique ID if the page is displaying an existing row. After the new row is committed, I need the new ID set the query parameter and synch up related rows in different tables that are keyed off the ID in this (master) table. I'd like to do this without "guessing" what the ID would be in advance as that method isn't foolproof in heavy usage.
    Additionally, it strikes me as a useful workaround if the unique ID was a UUID (mySQL UUID() function) that does not run the risk of any concurrency issues. Has anyone used this solution in VWP? How would I make the call for the underying DB (in this case MySQL, but could be anything) to generate the UUID? Is the call DB specific or is there a JDBC equivalent?
    UPDATE: never mind the GUID question, I can use the java.rmi.dgc.VMID class to autogenerate unique GUID's for this purpose. Being from a Lotus Notes background, I'm used to the power and flexibility such Unique ID's bring to the app. dev's portfolio.
    Thanks in adv. for any help .

    JSF together with JBoss Seam offers some real good possibilities to improve developer productivity. Right now, with JSF you can create forms where fields are persistent (saved in a database), but you have to write code to persist fields. In Notes/Domino, every field you drop in the form is automatically set to persist without writing a single piece of code. JBoss Seam aims to provide the missing glue to tie the JSF beans with business logic (EJB) and persistent layer (JPA). I think tools for Seam are still not mature. I would love to see JSC/VWB utilizing Seam. I know there is a NetBean plugin for Seam but it was written for old NetBeans (not VWP or JSC), so it doesn't work with the visual web pack where you can drag and drop JSF components.

  • Instantiate a bean from within a Servlet

    I am attempting to instantiate a bean from within a Servlet. Basically, I would like to set my bean properties from within a central controlling servlet, then call a worker class to take care of my database insert. The worker class would get its values from the bean.
    Does this sound reasonable? I'm sure this is quite possible and very easy to pull off, however I can't seem to find a single example. An example would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi,
    I have read what you have done.
    Now in the servlet add something like
    HttpSession ses=request.getSession(true);</stro
    ses.addAttribute("user","your Bean name");*
    in the JSP get this atribute by
    session.getAttribute("user");+
    Anyway, how have you configured your server? I am using a Bean Class and trying to instantiate in a sevlet. An exception is occuring.
    import mypack.User; //it is nicely imported*
    //in the doPOST() method
    User user=new User();+ //trying to instantiate
    it is giving an Exception. Kindly help.

  • How to retrieve information from entity beans?

    Hi all!
    I have a problem while trying to get information from entity beans. Here it goes:
    There are two entity beans with 1:N relationship between them.
    A FacadeSB is used to find a single record in one entity bean, using the findbyPrimaryKey method.
    What is required now is to get information from the other entity bean matching the record found from the first entity bean.
    to become more clear, the db schema is like that:
    vehicle_table
    vehicleid (vehicle_pkey)
    name (type of vehicle i.e. car, bike, atv, etc)
    brand_table
    brandid (brand_pkey)
    name (brand name e.g. ferrari)
    vehicleid (foreign key to vehicle_table)
    a FacadeSB gets the vehicle_table info and passes them to a servlet generated dropdown.
    what is the best way to populate a brand dropdown based on the vehicle dropdown selection?
    thanx in advance
    I hope the problem definition is clear enough for you guys...

    thanx for the reply
    i'm ok with the finder methods you suggested. my main concern in whether to create another FacadeSB to access the brand EJB. I don't believe that's the way to go on i.e. creating a session bean for every EJB created. Shall i use the VehicleFacadeSB to access brand EJB as well?
    I can undestand that such an implementation would be a quick fix as well as not such a resources hungry hack but on the other hand, would it make any sense architecturally?
    any suggestions?

  • How to use auto incremented tabe to create a CMP Entity Bean

    hi,
    I want create a CMP entitybean with an auto incremented table in

  • How do I get my information from my macbook air to auto link into my iMac desk computer?

    I just purchased an imac desktop computer and had the information from my macbook air transfered into it.  I was away on business and came back to find that my information didn't auto sync into my desktop computer.  How do I auto sync the 2?

    You can re-run Migration Assistant and this will migrate from the MBA to the iMac.  You can also turn on Disk Sharing on both computers in System Preferences - Sharing and as long as they are on the same network you can copy files. Stay away from system files, only move data files. If you want to migrate applications then use Migration Assistant or manually install them on the iMac.

  • Creating an auto incrementing field with CREATE TABLE from Java

    I'm using the "sun.jdbc.odbc.JdbcOdbcDriver" to get a connection towards an ODBC data source that's linked to a Access (.mdb) database.
    I've tried various combinations in my CREATE TABLE statement execution in order to create a table with an auto incrementing integer but neither of them work, not even the most obvious one:
    stmt.executeUpdate("CREATE TABLE mytable(uid integer AUTO_INCREMENT PRIMARY KEY);");
    I always get this runtime exception: *java.sql.SQLException: [Microsoft][ODBC Microsoft Access Driver] Syntax error in field definition*; and AUTO_INCREMENT is the problem. I've tried all variations like AUTO, INCREMENT, AUTOINCREMENT and such, but nothing works.
    I've looked everywhere but couldn't find an answer to this. Thanks for the help.

    You used MySQL syntax. I think you agree with me that Access isn't a MySQL database. Either use MySQL with a real JDBC driver (recommended) or use Access syntax.
    That said, creating databases and tables using Java is a bad idea. The database and table must be already there. With Java you just do the usual table operations like select, insert, update and delete. Nothing more is needed.
