Inspector HUD
Is it possible to change the order of the bricks in the Inspector HUD? The default stack doesn't quite track with my normal workflow. Thank you.
No, it is not. There is a reason: the Bricks are stacked in the order that Aperture applies the Adjustments. It is advised to _generally_ follow this order in making your Adjustments.
If you look at it, some of the ordering makes immediate sense. The rest is ordered, I trust, based on sound engineering.
It took me a while to get used to this. I now think of it as a subtly brilliant work reducer: it keeps me from going round in loops and getting lost. (One of the standard questions Lightroom users have when they start with Aperture is "Where's the history list of my adjustments?". There isn't one, because the order in which adjustments are made has no effect on the Image (and Aperture is relentlessly Image-centric).)

INSPECTOR HUD absolutely not working
Wow.... this is frustrating. I am using Aperture 3.1.
Suddenly, without reason, the Inspector HUD simply does not work in as follows:
a. When I first open Aperture, no problem bringing up the IHUD with "H" (as it should).
b. When I go into fullscreen mode, NO MORE IHUD. Pressing "H" briefly highlights the Menubar but NO IHUD. This is not, however, consistent. SOMETIMES the HUD works, mostly it does not (changes on reboot - if it works once, it works until I close out and rerun Aperture.
c. Single 27" i7 iMac with loads of RAM, OS 10.6.5
Never saw this screwy behaviour before. I did go ahead and rebuild my Aperture Database with no change in the screwy iHUD behaviour.
Anyone know what's up here??MCKravMaga wrote:

I'd be curious to learn if this happens most frequently when you just start Aperture. Then, after Aperture has been running for a little while, the HUD performs as snappy as it should.
This happens a lot if you have a large number of presets loaded into Aperture. I was noticing the same thing and noticed that if I remove all but my most used presets, the HUD performs very snappy.
From what I've been told, Aperture must load into memory all of the presets each time you start Aperture. But, it seems to wait to do so when you select the HUD. Thus, allowing for faster launching of Aperture.
Hope this helps.

Missing inspector HUD!?
I've been using the trial version for the past few days without issue. After installing my serial number tonight and doing the software update, every time i go into fullscreen mode and press H, my inspector hud disappears. If i reboot, it comes back at first(minimized) but as soon as i go into fullscreen mode again, it vanishes. Am i doing something wrong? Do i need to reinstall? This is getting frustrating and it never happened until tonight.
this issue appears periodically and the solution for me has been to restart aperture. sigh. as with all other aperture 3 issues i've experienced.
i've been an aperture user since v1.5.
i must say this... with all the crashes, hangs, bugs, and other strange behaviour that i've been experiencing with aperture 3, it's my firm belief that this is quite possibly the most poorly qa'd software that i've ever used from a large software house. i've come to expect this from ms and windows titles, but this really is at the top of my worst experiences. -
Modifying default "Inspectors"/"HUD" tools?
I always want sharpening, noise, and shadow highlight opened. Is there somewhere to modify the default appearance of the inspector and/or HUD? By the way, what does "^s" mean? I have tried every combination of keyboard modifiers I could think of and can't get any keyboard combo to open these tools. Must I use the pointer? And for each image?
Forrest,
Two people from the Aperture team gave a demo in San Francisco last week.
I asked if there was a way to make the Shadow/Highlight panel persist in the HUD from image to image. They said there was not. Maybe in a later version.
A few of us asked about the problems with RAW conversions. The answer was a solid, unequivocal "Aperture has the finest RAW conversion engine on the market."
One of us asked about losing metadata. They said they'd just discovered the bug that loses metadata in exported Tifs.
I asked if there were plans to give Spotlight the ability to search the Aperture Library. They said, Wouldn't that be great? They'd had the same idea but it was up to the people working on Spotlight.
All in all they seemed VERY happy with the work that they'd done on the interface and interested in discussing suggestions but, in the limited time we had to talk to them, not so happy to address any perceived problems with the quality of the output.
I REALLY wish I'd discovered the Tif issue and made prints before the demo.

Select a Project in the Library Inspector from Projects View -- now broken?
The new interface is missing something I used to use all the time. In Olde Aperture (3.3.1), double-clicking any selected Project(s) in Projects View showed the contents of that (those) Project(s) in the Browser and selected them in the Library tab of the Inspector. This behavior has been changed (3.3.2): now the contents are shown in the Browser, but as a subset of the superset of Projects, which remains selected in the Library tab of the Inspector.
This represents a bit of a dam in my workflow. I manage a few Libraries with thousands of nested Projects. I often need to select the Project in the Library tab of the Inspector. Double-clicking a Project (or Projects) was a great way to select those Projects in the Library tab of the Inspector. Is there a quick way to do this in 3.3.2? The old way kept with Aperture's visual orientation. Currently, I am having to memorize the names of Projects in order to find them. This is, afaict, a step backwards.
Is there any justification/benefit to having "Projects" remain selected after one double-clicks a Project or Projects in Projects View?
Notes:
- when two or more Projects are selected in Projects View and then double-clicked, one can right-click an Image and select "Show in Project" from the pop-up context menu. When only one Project is selected originally, that menu choice is not shown.
- you cannot open the Project Info pane after double-clicking a Project in Projects View. You must either return to Projects View and click the "i" icon on the Project tile, or otherwise right-click the Project name in the Library tab of the Inspector and select "Show Project info" from the context menu pop-up.
Thanks .

Léonie and I discussed this once already, but other than acknowledging the problem, didn't progress.

None that I can think of.

Only the "Goto Project" button in the "Project Info" panel, but I would not call that quick.

But that is really a nice work-around - just take care to at least select two projects at the same time.
I missed that feature, because I was annoyed that it does not work when selecting one project.

But at least you can still double click the project and go to the project with the "Project Info" HUD open, and it will stay open. But it is cumbersome to have to remember to open the HUD before going to the project. Otherwise not even the name of the project will be displayed. I have added the name of the project to each metadata view, so I can see it in the Inspector HUD as well.
I rarely use the projects view and rely heavily on the folder structure and the search field to quickly find my projects.
Cheers

BUG? inspector in full screen mode
i'm unable to open inspector in full screen mode...
anyone has this problem?Hi stokky. Welcome to the user-to-user Aperture forum.
Use "h" to toggle the Inspector HUD.
The Inspector HUD duplicates the regular Inspector, but as an HUD instead of as a pane in the program window.
To become conversant with all of the features of Aperture 3, read +at least+ the first seven chapters of the very useful [Users Manual|http://documentation.apple.com/en/aperture/usermanual>. Full Screen view is covered in Chapter 8. HUDs are covered in Chapter 3, Section 16.

HUD disappeared (Ap 2)
Any ideas why the HUD doesn't appear even when the menu implies it is visible (i.e. it shows "Hide inspector HUD")?
The other HUDs work fine.
ThanksHave you ever used aperture in a 2 screen setup?, it's quite possible the hud is moved over to the 2nd screen which you may not have switched on. Well.....at least that's what happened to me
-
Why won't my adjustments hud open in full screen mode.
My adjustments hud will no longer open in full screen mode.
Did you follow the instructions to delete your Aperture User Preferences? Did your problem remain?
Does the problem occur if you log on as a different user? (Log on, open Aperture, open the Inspector HUD in Full-Screen mode.)
How did you upgrade from v.2 to v.3? -
Issue with windows / crushing
Hello.
I have Aperture starting without displaying any windows - it keeps to be just a menu line in the taskbar - and crushing when I do try turn on option to show some (Show Inspector HUD, for example).

Audio problem with "Soft Frame" Main...
I'm using iDVD '08 and trying to make a slideshow DVD. I have created the DVD successfully, with the exception that I cannot get audio to play on the main title screen. I have audio playing on other menus, during slideshows, etc. Except when I try to add audio to the Menu Info Inspector HUD on the MAIN title screen. It drags fine, and looks as if the audio should play. However, when I preview the DVD playback I get no audio. I have tried to burn the DVD and still nothing. Other info: I imported a CD into iTunes using AIFF encoding, and all tracks play fine in iTunes and in iDVD preview. I am using other tracks from the same imported CD elsewhere in the DVD, and they are playing fine. It is only the TITLE screen, or MAIN menu that is not playing audio. I have tried it with other songs in my iTunes library as well... still nothing. Everything else works as it should.
Hello.
I found that if I drag and drop the song I want to play over the main menu onto the main menu pane before I started adding photographs- it worked fine- not ideal, but it worked for me.
I only discovered this by getting very frustrated at not being able to change the audio over the main menu and starting again!
Cheers

Aperture 2.1 is out today, with new open plugin architecture
See press below. Sounds really great.
08:30 28Mar08 PRN-Apple Releases Aperture 2.1 with Powerful Image Editing Plug-In Architecture
CUPERTINO, Calif., March 28 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Apple(R) today
released Aperture(TM) 2.1, which introduces an open plug-in architecture that
makes it easy for photographers to use specialized third party imaging
software right from within Aperture. Available today as a free software
update, Aperture 2.1 includes the Apple-developed plug-in, Dodge & Burn, which
adds brush-based tools for dodge (lighten), burn (darken), contrast,
saturation, sharpen and blur. Over the coming months, third party software
developers will deliver image editing plug-ins for localized editing, filters
and effects, noise analysis and reduction, fisheye lens correction and more.
"The image quality in Aperture 2 has won over the most demanding
photographers," said Rob Schoeben, Apple's vice president of Applications
Product Marketing. "Now, thanks to our open plug-in architecture, users can
access an entire industry's worth of imaging expertise without ever leaving
Aperture."
"To date, maybe two percent of my photographs needed to be touched up
outside Aperture," said John Stanmeyer, founding member of the VII Photo
Agency and contributing photographer for Time and National Geographic
magazines. "Now that I can dodge and burn right within Aperture's new plug-in,
I can't imagine when I'll have to open any other application to tone my
images."
By clicking on one or more images within Aperture, users can choose from a
menu of installed plug-ins and apply specialized imaging operations to either
TIFF or RAW images. Apple is working closely with key developers to bring the
most requested plug-ins to Aperture such as:
-- Nik Software's Viveza plug-in, powered by U Point technology, which
provides a powerful, precise and easy way for photographers to
selectively control and adjust color and light in their digital images;
-- PictureCode's Noise Ninja plug-in that delivers advanced high ISO noise
analysis and reduction;
-- Digital Film Tools' Power Stroke plug-in that features a simple,
stroke-based interface to quickly mask and intuitively perform targeted
adjustments;
-- The Tiffen Company's Dfx plug-in that provides an expansive suite of
creative filters and effects;
-- dvGarage's dpMatte plug-in, which is a high performance chroma key tool
for creating seamless composites, and the HDRtoner plug-in that enables
the selection of multiple photos to create a single high dynamic range
(HDR) image; and
-- Image Trends' plug-ins that include Fisheye-Hemi to quickly and
effortlessly correct fisheye lens distortion, ShineOff which
automatically removes shine from faces and PearlyWhites that
automatically whitens and brightens teeth.

Access browser in full screen mode?
how do you access browser to brows photos when in full screen mode? i can see the film strip at the bottom but how do you go in browser mode to see all photos on screen while full screen? full screen was kind of wird to use at first so i avoided using it for a few months, but now i kind of figured out where everything is, except of this.
I am not sure, if I understand your question: Are you asking, how to get access to all items in your library for browsing while in full screen mode, or are you asking how to browse many images at once, while in full screen mode.
To access all library items in Full Screen Mode, display the inspector and use the Library tab of the Inspector panel.
To have a full screen Browser, switch to full screen mode while in Browser view.
For example, using the Inspector in Full Screen mode: (klick the button to launch the Inspector HUD).
And after switching to full screen mode, while in the Browser:

Aperture 3.5 Full screen
I think Apple totaly messed up aperture 3.5 in full screen mode in Maverics. Now my second display is rendered useless. The menu bar will not go away. I use the menu item "Swap Displays" to put the browser on my smaller second display. This menu item now does noting! Why have a menu item if it does nothing. Apple was asleep at the switch. Maverics was supposed to be great for multple displays, not!

I've had the same problem. I tried the solution listed above :
(System Preferences->Mission Control->Displays have separate Spaces).
But this wasn't a fix to the swap display problem. I contacted Applecare, and they recreated the same problem, but haven't been able to offer a solution or workaround. Now my secondary display is useless (which is essential to my photo-editing workflow).
Have you found a fix?
Typically, I use the main screen to show the single image that I'm working on, and the secondary display for both the inspector HUD and grid view. To achieve this, I use full screen mode + swap displays. -
Why does Quicktime X play 1080 jerky compared to VLC?
Hi,
I imported some 1920x1080 60i footage from my Canon HF G10 camcorder into Final Cut Pro X (v10.0.3). No transcoding or proxy. It just rewrapped the MTS files into MOV.
I located the video files (.MOV) in the Final Cut Pro Event folder (Original) and opened one video using Quicktime X (v10.1). The Inspector hud reports:
Format: 'avc1', 1920 × 1080, Millions
16-bit Integer (Little Endian), Stereo (L R), 48.000 kHz
FPS: 29.97
Data Size: 155.7 MB
Data Rate: 24.10 Mbit/s
Current Size: 1,920 × 1,080 pixels (Actual)
When I play the video in Quicktime X it is jerky. It also plays it jerky inside Final Cut Pro X. Though if I create a Proxy (or Optimised Media) it plays that smoothly because it transcodes it to ProRes 422.
However, when I play the same video (untranscoded, original .MOV) using VLC (v2.0.1) it plays it smoothly. Even VLC 1.1.12 plays it smoothly.
Is it me or is Quicktime X not as good as VLC for HD video? Quicktime 7 Pro has the same jerky performance.
I have a Mac Pro 2x2.66 Ghz (10.7.3) with 16 GB RAM and an NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT 512 MB + 30" ACD
By VLC playing it smoothly would it be a correct conclusion that my machine should be capable of playing back this video smoothly?

Any way to create a keyboard shortcut for keywords in Bridge CC?
Just curious if there's any way to create a keyboard shortcut for "new keyword" and "new sub keyword" in Bridge CC?
If not, that would be a welcome addition in any future Bridge update - being able to customize keyboard shortcuts or add your own the way you can in Premiere Pro CC.Steve,
Not, as far as I know, directly, but the problem is with Aperture, not Keyboard Maestro. Aperture has no command (afaik) for selecting the caption field of the Info Inspector. Without a command, you will have to find another way to access it, or another way to accomplish what you want.
You can specify the spot clicked by screen coordinates, so you cold use the Inspector HUD and the coordinates of the Caption field, as long as the Inspector HUD always pops up in the same location.
Many dialog boxes allow the user to advance through the fields with the Tab key. Unfortunately, the number of times you have to type "{Tab}" in order to get to a particular field depends on other interface elements (if the Control Bar is showing, add 2). I don't know of a way to determine if the Control Bar is showing.
You might find a work-around using a Metadata Preset and the Batch Change command. Keyboard Maestro can easily pop up a dialog with a text field in which you can type what you want to go into Aperture's Caption field.
The best thing to do is download the trial version and see if it meets your needs. Keyboard Maestro is adept at creating macros based on keyboard input. If the program does not provide keyboard equivalents, writing an effective macro becomes difficult.

Lastly, for the use you cite, I simply show the Inspector if it's not showing (by typing "i"), change to the Info tab if it is not currently activated (by clicking, but note that opening the Inspector with the Info tab selected can be done with one command "View➞Inspector➞Info"), and then clicking in the Caption field, which is part of all of the Metadata Views I regularly use.
HTH. Perhaps one of our programming mavens will suggest something better.
