Installation using Norton Ghost Image?

Could I possibly use a Norton Ghost Image of Windows XP to install BootCamp, and then upgrade from XP to Vista?
I purchased a manufactured desktop PC several years ago and they provided a Norton Ghost Image. The power supply short circuited about a year ago, and I used a Vista notebook in the interim. I currently have an iMac, but gaming options are not at all optimal with the Mac, so I decided BootCamp was the way to go instead of upgrading the broken PC or building a new one from scratch. Before the desktop shorted out, I had upgraded from XP to Vista, then reverted back to XP using the Norton Ghost image because of some compatibility issues (it was a rather weird PC... ran on two single core Xeon processors).
So that's my story... does anyone have an answer?

I am not sure if you can actually load that image on a boot camp partition however assume for a second that you will be able to load the disk on the partition. The image was made for a PC that you had bought and therefore an OEM version of Windows XP was installed. You will have validation issues. The image will also have drivers to run the pc that you had and will most certainly cause immediate issues with the Apple components.
I know your goal is to immediately upgrade to VISTA however I seriously doubt that you can get your XP installed. Why don't you simply install VISTA instead? You already have the VISTA disk so I asked.

  • T61P: Upgrading 100GB HDD to 250GB HDD using Norton Ghost

Hi, i am planning on upgrading the HDD in my t61p and would like to know, can i use Norton ghost on a desktop pc, with both 2.5" HDD attached to the desktop via USB enclosures, and make an image of the 100gb onto the 250gb? If not this, is there another method of duplicating the HDD's such as making recovery cd's and then using those cd's to place the image onto the new hdd?
    Thanks in advance.

Thanks everyone.  I've done a copy with Carbon Copy Cloner and everything seems to be working fine.  Good idea, woodmeister50 to test it before going through fiddle of installing it on mac mini.
Thanks ToastMonk.  I just went through that process
although I was using Seagate's Thunderbolt adapter.
I was actually testing for many weeks as I had not

  • Using Norton Ghost

I want to backup an image of my C; drive on my Media Hub.  When setting up Ghost it asks for a username/password.  What do I enter?  I have a password for the files viewer but have nevfer provided a username.  If I leave the username blank Ghost advises I must have a username?

If your drive C is using the NTFS format, Norton Ghost might be asking for the user login that you use when your logging into the PC. Norton Ghost might be looking at the security feature of NTFS to go thru the backup process and norton ghost might need the user login to be able to backup the files. I use a different software to create an image of my harddrive, you can get it here . It's a free software so be sure to read the userguide for it.
    Cheers.

  • Is it possible to restore a norton ghost Windows7 image to a bootcamp partition ?

Trying to setup a dual boot environment on a new Mac Air with MacOS and Windows7 using Bootcamp.   Rather than the normal way of installing Win7 from the vanilla install media, is it possible to restore a Norton Ghost image of a different (PC) laptop to the new Win7 partition?

    Two "no" on this.
Activation needs to be retail OS. That okay?
Moving Windows to another motherboard almost never works and is buggy and unstable. Been there tried that.
Ghost does not support Boot Camp and the UEFI/GPT scheme used. Nor does Acronis. Paragon Software has come along with Boot Camp support.

  • Norton Ghost + Parallels?

    Hello,
I just switched over to Parallels from Boot Camp. Before switching I made a backup of my XP install using Norton Ghost 10.0
I have these backup files on both a USB 2.0 and a Firewire external drive.
I have been unsuccessful in restoring my system using ghost 10.0 (mainly getting XP to restart using a startup disc and reading from the external drive).
    Has anyone done this successfully??
    Thanks.

Just as an FYI... the most recent (and stable) beta of Parallels allows you to use your BootCamp installation:
    http://forum.parallels.com/thread5997.html
It actually works quite well and you don't have to have two installations of Windows. I'm not sure how you might be able to restore your Ghost BootCamp image into Parallels. You may find you have problems even if you manage to get it to work as you'll be restoring an image that is using totally different drivers for just about every component. You may just want to start fresh with a clean install... or re-install BootCamp and then just use the BootCamp installation within Parallels (this is really the ideal solution).

    Windows itself.
There really are "?" (Help} icons and the backup feature will even remind you to create a system restore image the first time.
(I still think a reference manual for $25 makes sense too, or at least learn to use Google.)
Was asked and answered - quite well - a couple times yesterday, that would avoid and save a lot of wear and tear.

  • Using Symantec Norton Ghost 14 on Bootcamp

Just a bit of information for those of you wondering what to use to backup your bootcamp side of your Apple product.
I use Ghost 14 and I have to say it has been fantastic. It took alot of figuring out and I could not find alot of posts about it so I self taught myself (don't use Symantec Support they are useless) and so thought I would write this to help others. I am not saying this is the best or only way, just the way that WORKED for me. There may of course be other easier ways that I do not know about as I am only amateur myself. Anyone who knows any different / easier way feel free to add comments:
THIS IS FOR WINDOWS XP / XP PRO USERS (RE-INSTALLING AN IMAGE ALREADY CREATED USING GHOST 14)
I have no experience of Vista but would presume a similar path.
1.) First of all you need to create a new partition with Bootcamp Assistant as you would normally do setting the partition size etc.
2.) Follow the instructions and insert the Windows Installation Disk when asked to do so. You have to do this as though you are going to put a brand new copy of XP on as the partition HAS TO BE formatted via the Windows Installation Disk.
3.) When you get top the Format instructions. Choose the Bootcamp partition and format using NTFS or FAT32 whichever is your choice (NTFS recommended).
4.) Once formatted system will restart and commence installing Windows.
5.) Whilst the system is restarting keep your finger on the eject key and eject the Windows Installation Disk.
6.) Insert the Symantec Recovery Disk.
7.) Turn your computer off / restart holding the Option key down until you get the Boot screen.
8.) Choose the Symantec (Windows) Disk
9.) When loaded up click Recover and choose your image and follow the instructions ensuring you have Use as Boot ticked without Disk Signature or MBR ticked.
10.) Wait until the image has been restored and restart holding down your Option Key and Choose the Windows Partition.
11.) You now Boot into Windows and have your Backup Image fully restored onto your Bootcamp Partition.
I have to say I was over the moon when it all worked. Fantastic! Anyone has any problems do drop me a line please.
FOR ACTUALLY INSTALLING AND MAKING BACKUPS IN THE FIRST PLACE JUST FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS THAT CAME WITH YOUR GHOST 14 SOFTWARE. NO POINT IN PUTTING THAT INFO HERE. THIS IS INFORMATION FOR "INSTALLING" A GHOST 14 IMAGE BACK INTO BOOTCAMP!
Again all I can say is that Ghost 14 Works good with Bootcamp! A great piece of software for the Windows Bootcamp user community. High recommended by me.
Hope this post helps all of you using / planning to use Ghost 14

If Norton Ghost is still under Norton's support, I recommend contacting them as I'm certain they have encountered something similar before.
Do you receive any errors? If so, what are they exactly?
I was not able to find your model notebook exactly. What is the exact model of this notebook?
NOTE: Do not provide the serial number, but providing the product number (not product key) will be sufficient.

  • Have PS Element 12 using it with new MacBook pro.  When I edit and save a photo in jpeg format, and try to e-mail it, it has a duplicate but ghost image underneath, and I don't want this second image.  How do I get rid of it?

Unwanted ghost image underneath edited file.  Need to solve!!!  Have not experienced this with my old CS2.  Please help.

    Hi Panamark,
The problem has been resolved for me. I am a little fuzzy on how it got fixed.
I only have 3G, so I think I went to the library to use wi-fi.
I think I just deleted the stuck apps, and the downloaded them again. You do not have to pay again when you download a previously purchased app.
It is now August, and fortunately I have not had any stuck apps lately.
As you may already know, you cannot download an app over 20 MB via 3G.
I have the Kindle app also. No new updates lately. I only bought one thing using Kindle. It was a guide to iPad that was only $1.99 or so, but it did not really have anything that cannot be found in normal free Apple guide.
I have borrowed an ebook from the library using Overdrive app. You can choose the ebook version from Kindle.
I don't have any weather apps.
Let me know what happened when you get the chance.

  • How to start the Toshiba Ghost image files from the HDD

    Hello
Ok this is a tough one but hopefully some tech/wizz can help me out.
I have all the necessary CD Recovery disc but my Toshiba laptop CDRom has died and i'm looking for replacement at the moment.
I have managed to copy the image files and all the other info from these CD's onto the laptop hard drive via a network from my desktop cdrom. I did try to use the desktop cdrom to boot the 2.5" laptop drive but it knew it wasnt a toshiba laptop so wouldn't let me recovery.
However now I have manage to copy all the ghost image files onto the laptop hdd I'm stuck on how to run installation via dos.
The laptop hdd is formatted and all i have are the following files
    span.bmp
setenv.bat --------> batch file contains following lines
    @ECHO OFF

which contains 3 extra folders BMP, DOS and TOOLS and span.bmp
I cant figure out how i can run ghost to extract and recovery my HDD can someone help me :)
    Thanks in advance
    Simon

Im really skeptical if you will be start the Toshiba ghost image files from the second partition without using the Symantec Norton Ghost software.
I have created a ghost image of the C partition and placed it on the D partition.
To recover the C partition I have to start the Ghost Utility and have to use the image file .gho from D partition
I have googled a little bit and found the useful instruction how to recover the Portege M3500 without using an CD/DVD drive. Maybe this will run also on the Sat A30.

  • I need to create a ghost image of my G4 iBook (OSX 10.3.9) and replace the OS9 on my G4 tower with the created iBook ghost image. How do you do this?

I need to create a ghost image of my G4 iBook (OSX 10.3.9) and replace OS9 on a G4 tower with the Ghost image. How do you do this? Will my applications still work?
The iBook is running Pather, i have tons of programs i use on it, project files, etc... and my G4 Mac tower is more powerful, faster, and more reliable than the iBook. I basiclly just want to take the entire OS, programs and files... create an image, and drop the image on the G4 Tower so it basically will function just like the iBook. Like a mirror image of everything that is on the iBook.  I know that you can create image files in the Disk Utility on Panther, but will that back up the entire OS with settings, programs, files and all?  ive never done anything like this before, so i wanted to post this up to see if i would get an answer. In the meantime, im reading "Mac OS X, Help Desk Essentials By Owen Linzmayer" to see if i can find the steps to do this.
Any help would be greatly apprciated. Much thanks!

Can't be done as an exact copy from one Mac to the other.  The operating systems are system specific. First make sure your system doesn't need a firmware update to get 10.2 or later on it. You'll need to install 9 on it if it does, direct from a 9 retail CD that is compatible with it *.  This disc can't say Upgrade, Dropin, or OEM. To determine compatibility, identify your G4 tower:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3082
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=42739
Then look at the OS 9 compatibility:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25517
    Then apply the correct update
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86117
The last Mac OS 9 to come retail is 9.2.1, and that's newer than 9.0.4, 9.0.2, and 9.1.
Your ghost image can be done using cloning software, but then you'll have to use a retail 10.3 installer and 10.3.9 combo update on the G4 tower.  Then use the Migration Assistant to import the data from the clone of the iBook. The 10.3 retail disc looks like * and does not say upgrade, dropin, or OEM.  The 10.3.9 combo update is here:
    http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macosxcombinedupdate1039.html
The clone to an external hard drive can be done with these instructions*:
http://www.macmaps.com/backup.html The import of the external hard drive with the migration assistant can be done with these instructions:

  • 30" HD Apple Monitor leaving ghost images and vertical lines

I have a Mac Pro Gen 1 with ati 5770 HD video card runing Snow Leopard. My 30" HD Apple Monitor will flicker and leave verticle lines and perstent ghost images from closed windows, even during shut down.  Some times it will flicker back to normal, but then it will flicker back to leaving verticle lines and ghost images.  I have tried using a different video card, same issue, nothing changes.  I have tried instaling new video drivers and using old ones. I have been using the ati 5770 HD for months now without any issues.  How do I fix this?

If two different cards produce the same results then I would think its your 30" display which is failing.
    Update:
I just noticed in your sig you are using 10.6.8.  There are some threads about video problems (flickering, not sure about vertical lines) with 10.6.8 (google "10.6.8 flickering site:discussions.apple.com").  So if you boot from your installer dvd which presumably has an older version of OSX (10.6.4 maybe?) do you still see the display problems?
Another thought - would an smc and pram reset affect anything?  You might give it a try too.

  • Not able to install Norton Ghost - Lightout within PSU4WH-00700P?

    Model : Satellite U840-00700P (PSU4WH-00700P)
Norton Ghost 15 has been successfully installed within Win7, and create an image for backup, but when I try to restore image, there is no problem within win7, but after win7 restarts, Norton Ghost fails to launch restoring process.
Furthermore, when I install Lightout (One feature within Norton Ghost 15) within win7, the installation works fine within Win7, but after win7 restarts, LightOut restore should be listed within window boot manager, but it does not appear at all.
The same procedure has been successful to install within PC with no problem, I have discussed with technical staffs between Toshiba and Norton, the technical issue for not able to install Lightout could be raid 0 setting between SSD and HDD's combination.
Does anyone have any experience on installing Norton Ghost - LightOut within this raid 0 setting between SSD and HDD's combination?
Thanks in advance for any suggestions

  • Norton Ghost Equivlent for OS X?  BootCamp won't let me unpartition.

So here's the story... I used Boot Camp to install Vista RC1, I wanted to see the 64-bit version working on my new Macbook Pro. While installing Vista it is suggested to remove an "EFI" 200mb partition. It worked. But now I want to rid of the partition and put my HD back to 1 full piece, I just use Parallels for my very few windows "needs". But Boot Camp assistant says it is unable to put them back in to one, and I must Backup and use Disc Utility to format my HD and then just reinstall OS X. But I wanna be lazy... is there any option like a Norton ghost, or equivalent, that I could image all my data on the OS X partition... then format my HD back in to one piece, then reinstall the image (i have a 2nd mac to be able to push the image from). Or what would be the easiest way to backup my data... so there's less needing to reinstall apps and configure personal setting/data?
    thanks.

    You have two options:
    http://www.bombich.com/software/ccc.html
    http://www.shirt-pocket.com/SuperDuper/
Both of them are working fine.
Please note that you have to use an external HD to backup your existining one.
