Installing tomcat V4.1

I have unzipped Tomcat to c:\jakarta-tomcat directory.
j2sdk1.4-b3 is installed under c:\jdk1.4
Am using win98, and have set both the JAVA_HOME and TOMCAT_HOME environment variables.
When I try to start tomcat I get the following at the dos prompt:
out of environment space
out of environment space
out of environment space
out of environment space
Using CATALINA_BASE:
Using CATALINA_HOME: ..
Using CLASSPATH:
Using JAVA_HOME: C:\jdk1.4
Bad command or file name
Does anyone have a clue what is going wrong and preferably how to fix it or get tomcat running!
Thanks in advance for any help

Oh my. You are going to like this.
Java uses environment variables to store settings. This approach, BTW, is also adopted by.Net. However under W9x there is a maximum length for each environment variable and maximum amount of space available for the total amount of environment variables.
The error message means you're running out of total environment variable space. Fun he?
So go to a DOS prompt, type "set" and see what you can get rid of by editing autoexec, etc. Or maybe you can change the amount of space available in the MSDOS PIF or something. But W9x is too long ago for me. Sorry.

  • "Invalid DOS version" error message when installing Tomcat in Windows98

I tried to install Tomcat 5.0 in Windows 98. At first, it produced "Out of Environment Space" error message. I then changed the "Initial Environment" from Auto to other values (bigger than 2816) for both startup.bat and shutdown.bat.
When I restarted the Tomcat, it produce "Invalid DOS version" error message. I thought about updating the DOS but previously when I had WinXP installed in computer, I couldn't access to the server due to the dos version issue.
Is there any way to handle this? I would really appreciate the help:) Thank you very much..

  • Install Tomcat on Vista, but wrong path

    Hi
I am new to Tomcat 6, I installed jdk 5 on Vista, but the jre is 6.
I set the JAVA_HOME : C:\Java\jdk5\bin (I changed the install folder name to be jdk5)
    PATH: C:\Java\jdk15\bin
    CLASSPATH: C:\Java\jdk15\bin
    CATALINA_HOME: C:\Tomcat
When I run C:\Tomcat\bin\startup.bat, it said JAVA_HOME environment variable is not defined correctly. JAVA_HOME should point to JDK but not JRE.
But the path did point to jdk as I install jre5 on C:\Java\jre5.
    Any idea?

PATH: C:\Java\jdk15\binIf you can open a command shell, type "java -version" and get back something sensible, then this is correct.
CLASSPATH: C:\Java\jdk15\binWrong. Delete this. Not needed or wanted.
CATALINA_HOME: C:\TomcatIs that where you installed Tomcat?

Wondering if anyone has seen this before.  I am installing some new AW/HDS for a client and keep running into the same error.  When i choose to enable the re-skilling tool, the system is having trouble creating the service account for tomcat and installing it as a service.  I don't think it is a ad rights issue as the install has no issues creating the distributor account.  the error from the setup log is:

I have not found the source of the issue, but after trolling the internets for other people who had issues installing tomcat i did find a workaround.  step one was to manually install Tomcat from the ICM install disk by running the following command:
    \Apache-Tomcat-5.5.25.exe /D=C:\ICM\Tomcat
The tomcat install will run and will encounter an error about halfway through saying to check Security settings or permissions, Choose Ignore.
    Uninstall Tomcat
    Re-Boot
    Re-install Tomcat with the command %install CD Directory%\Apache-Tomcat-5.5.25.exe /D=C:\ICM\Tomcat
tomcat should install without any issues and you should see tomcat running as a service now
    Uninstall Tomcat
    Re-boot
Re-run ICM install and choose re-skilling tool
    Install should complete without issue.

  • Installing Tomcat

I'm having trouble installing Tomcat 5.0.30
I've downloaded the Windows Installer, run it, installing the files at C:\Tomcat5.0
When I try and startup the server at c:\Tomcat\bin\startup I get the folllowing message:
Windows cannot find '-Djava.endorsed.dirs='. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again. To search for a file, click the Start button, and then click Search.
I've done a search but to no avail!
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks in anticipation

I have added the CATALINA_HOME environment variable setting it to c:\Tomcat 5.0
This has had no effect. I can't understand why this is not included in the original Apache Tomcat installation instructions.
I have also set the JAVA_HOME environment variable setting it to c:\Sun\AppServer so that it points to the JDK
    This too has no effect!

  • Installing Tomcat on mac os 10.4?

    Hi,
Does anyone know how to install Tomcat? Are there any up to date detailed instructions anywhere?
    Thanks.

I found some detailed directions for installing
    tomcat 5.5.x here:
    http://www.benslade.com/projects/java/tomcat/Installin
    gJavaTomcatMySQLOnMacOSX/
That article is a year and a half old.
and I am considering installing 5.5.x rather than 6.0
    to avoid any potential problems.
What potential problems are you hoping to avoid? I'm finding everything that worked in 5.5 is still working in 6.0, but I had to do a little extra work to accommodate the new directory structure. If you start out with the new directory structure, you can avoid having to do that, unless you're planning to stay with 5.5 indefinitely.
In those instructions, which are partially taken from this
    apple article:
    http://developer.apple.com/internet/java/tomcat1.html
Six years old. I guess that makes it a classic!
tomcat is installed in /usr/local. Why did you
install in /Library instead of /usr/local? My
Apache2 and PHP5 install are in /Library, but in the
config options I used for installing mysql, I see
references to /usr/local? How do you know whether to
    install in /Library or /usr/local?
Simple. Can you see /usr/local in the Finder? How are you planning to edit your JSP files? If you're going to use a command-line editor, have fun. I use BBEdit for JSP, just like I do for HTML and pretty much everything. I can open files anywhere with BBEdit, but it's much easier if I keep them in a directory that's visible in the Finder.
Also, notice that neither one of the articles you cited says anything about images. I don't know about you, but I like to use images with my web applications. Can you save images in /usr/local/... with Photoshop? Not easily. Sure, you can save them in your ~/Pictures folder and then go into the terminal and use sudo mv or sudo cp to move or copy the images into /usr/local/whatever, which belongs to root, so you have to say pretty please. Or you could just beat yourself over the head with a two-by-four, which will have about the same effect on your overall mood.
Finally, I often make changes to the directory structure of web applications as they grow and develop. Sometimes I make subdirectories and move files around, and I almost always have a directory for images, one for stylesheets and one for scripts. I find it a lot easier to create these in the Finder, and it's also easier to copy scripts and stylesheets I want to reuse from other applications.
MySQL and PostgreSQL are RDBMS programs. You couldn't edit the data files with a text editor if you wanted to. You do everything through the JDBC or ODBC interface. You don't even really have to know where the data files are. It's a completely different paradigm from editing HTML and JSP files, so it just makes more sense to me to install them in /usr/local. Some people do install these in /Library, and they'll work just fine there. I just don't see any reason to install something in a visible folder if I don't need to look at it.
    This article:
    http://hivelogic.com/narrative/articles/usingusrlocal
says you should put all apps you build yourself into
/usr/local so that updates won't screw things up.
Yes, he's right. Well, mostly. It's a little more complicated.
If you need to build and use a different version of a program that Apple provides as a part of the OS, put it in /usr/local/bin and add /usr/local/bin to your path. Then, when you use that command, you'll get the new version, because it is in a directory that precedes /usr/bin (and /usr/sbin, /bin and /bin /sbin /usr/bin /usr/sb /sbin) in the path list--assuming you appended your added directories to the head of the list like you're supposed to. (Unfortunately, the manpath gets built in an independent process, so often you will still get the old manual unless you explicitly as for the new one.) When the system needs to run a command, it will default to the one Apple provided, because /usr/local isn't even in the root's path (unless you've added it, but don't).
But /usr/local/bin isn't the only place that's safe. I keep most of my shell scripts in a bin directory in the root of my home directory, or ~/bin. It's a convenient place to put them, I can edit them easily, and they'll never get overwritten by an update. Some people choose to make this directory invisible, but I like to be able to see mine.
But, of course, he's not talking about what you do or don't put in your /Library directory. This isn't a Unix directory, and Apple doesn't include any version of Tomcat with OS X. (Maybe OS X Server, but that's a whole other story.) But if you look at what Apple does put in this directory, like the Apache document root and cgi-bin directories, similar kinds of things for WebObjects, it kind of makes sense for at least the Tomcat webapps directory to be here, if not bin, conf, lib and logs, and the easiest way to get them there is to just put the Tomcat home folder there.
Since this is probably going to turn into a religious war, let me just add that I'm not a Unix geek. I like Unix a heck of a lot more than some other OSes, but I've been a Mac user since 1984, and there are reasons why I prefer it. I know a lot of Unix guys who can do everything in emacs that I can do in BBEdit just as efficiently, but I can't. I've made a lot of money doing web programming in BBEdit, and it's the kind of software I like to use. It's not as overblown as Dreamweaver, but it's not a command line program. I can do about everything I need to in Unix shells but I don't live there. Being able to see and manipulate files and folders in the Finder works for me, so I tend to keep files I interact with in visible directories.

  • Error installing Tomcat

    Hello,
I'm installing Tomcat on a Windows ME machine. I've set the CLASSPATH to C:\Tomcat\jakarta-tomcat-3.2.3, the JAVA_HOME to C:\jdk1.3.1, and the TOMCAT_HOME to C:\Tomcat\jakarta-tomcat-3.2.3. The error I'm getting when I use the startup command is below, with the result that Tomcat is not starting.
    Unable to set CLASSPATH dynamically.

Does anyone have an idea about what the problem might be?
    Thanks greatly,
    Adam

    I've set the CLASSPATH to
C:\Tomcat\jakarta-tomcat-3.2.3This seems not very useful. Are there any classes in this very directory? Forget about it, and have Tomcat take care of it.
    TOMCAT_HOME to
C:\Tomcat\jakarta-tomcat-3.2.3.I think you could eve forget about TOMCAT_HOME. Tomcat will use the directory of the batch files as its home, if not specified.
Note: To set the CLASSPATH dynamically on
Win9x systems only DOS 8.3 names may be
used in TOMCAT_HOME!So: change the directory name to C:\tomcat and try again. Then you'll at least eliminate one possible cause... Tomcat puts no stuff in the Windows registry, so you savely rename the directory.
What about setting JAVA_HOME? I thought that was the only one that could be required... Like:
    set JAVA_HOME=c:\jdk1.3
Out of environment spaceThis implies that your WinME cannot handle any more of the "SET A=B" commands in the startup batch file. This will indeed mess up the script's behavior, as Tomcat tries to create the actual start command using such SET commands. Even prior to caring about classpaths etc., this definitely needs to be solved.
In Win9x one could click the left upper DOS logo in a DOS box (or right-click a shortcut or .bat file) to change the environment space from "auto" to some large value. Maybe it helps... What about WinME?

Why did you not get them to install EE at the same
time they did tomcat? You knew about this before.
Also, I think you need to start saving your own
computer, it seems your school is giving you a
headache.aye, it is. I thought someone said that tomcat came with those packages. Oh well, I have my own computer ( a nice one, I built it) but my mother won't let me connect it to the internet (I'm 'that age' for pornography). I'm a senior, I'll be glad when I get out this coming spring. My lovely system admin has my e-mails filtered into his deleted items box... I really hate this place.
    They did:
If you're just using Servlets an JSP, you don't need the whole J2EE stuff, Tomcat is enough, for example. The textbook should have mentioned that.

  • Trouble installing Tomcat.

Hello I have downloaded [jakarta-tomcat-4.0.1] and have jdk1.3 installed in c:\jdk1.3\
When I install Tomcat it tells me I do not have a java development kit and advises me to download one.
My autoexec file is as follows:
(I haven't needed to add any classpaths as I use a IDE that knows where the complier is).
    @echo off
    path c:\windows;c:\windows\COMMAND
    SET SNDSCAPE=C:\WINDOWS
    set java_home=c:\jdk1.3
Could someone please tell me what is going wrong and edit my autoexec file with the correct path and repost it?
    Thanks in advance,
    Michael De Vorms

    Hi,
I hope my answer will fit your configuration, as I'm using W2K, so no autoexec here...
I don't even have the JAVA_HOME defined in the environment variables, but I had to modify two Tomcat batch files, as follows:
    1. In Catalina.bat, I had to modify the entry
    SET JAVA_HOME=<java home>
to fit my installation. In your case, you should put:
    SET JAVA_HOME=c:\jdk1.3
    2. In Startup.bat, I modified the entry
    SET CATALINAHOME=<tomcat home>
where <tomcat home> is the home path for your Tomcat installation.
One more thing: I suggest you to define the CLASSPATH in your environment (if you use other classes than those in JDK 1.3), as Tomcat does not access the information your IDE has.
    Regards and good luck,
    Adrian

I don't know, but I would assume that the MBA can install and can run Autocad with Boot Camp.
The question is more, can the software be effectively used with such a small display.
Audocad and vector packages such as Adobe Illustrator are typically run using large screens, so a lack of display real estate may mean the process is frustrating, even if it is possible.
I face the same thing - I am considering an MBA 13" and need to run Illustrator, and that would mean a lot of scrolling.
I  think you would be advised to ensure you bought an MBA with a high specification of processor and memory to give yourself the best chance of success.
Is there a Mac version of Autocad you could switch to, to make for less complication? I've managed to shift all but one of my Windows applications to OS X now, and only occasionally use Windows on the system.
