Intel SSD 320 Series Unreliability, Intel or OSX Lion at fault?

Hi,
I have been using the Intel SSD 320 Series 160Gb SSD in a Quad Core iMac for a couple of months.
Its was running fine all through the Lion Beta program, but Monday evening, my iMac with OSX Lion locked up and I had to power off the system (that never happens to my Mac normally).
On rebooting, I got the flashing folder with a question mark, signifying no devices with a valid OS were detected
The following morning, I had to replace the SSD with a 1TB platter drive and restore my system (thank god for Time Machine).
Disk Utility repoerts the SSD as 8.4Mb in size (no, thats not a typo) and thinks the drive is unformatted.
This is very disappointing, so much for hoping SSD would be more reliable than mechanical drives
I loved the speed of the SSD, but this type of failure whether its Intel's fault or OSX causing this catestrophic failure I am still unsure, but either way its totally un-acceptable and has made me wary of wanting to try again with SSD!
D.

To help future users searching, I have an update.
This appears to be a bug in the Intel 320 Series SSD drives which Intel have acknowledged.
I applaud them for owning up to the problem, but I am furious they let a product of this type get to market with a serious bug like this in the first place!!
If anyone is using one of these drives I suggest you make sure your Time Machine backups are running fine and are up-to-date and constantly check out the link below for a firmware update that at the time of writing has still not materialised.
Rest assured, you have a ticking time bomb on your hands!

  • Intel SSD 320 Series 8 MB Bug neue Firmware?

    Hallo,
    http://support.lenovo.com/in/hi/documents/ht074473
    http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/T400-T500-and-newer-T-series/T420-SSD-8MB-Error-on-Current-4PC1LE04-Firm...
Ich habe schon den telefonischen Lenovo Support angerufen, aber die konnten mir nicht weiter helfen.
Wo bekomme ich jetzt die neue Firmware LE06 her?
    SSD Modell: SSDSA2BW160G3L
    Notebook: T420s

  • Portege R500 - compatibility with Intel SSD 320 160GB

I have installed an Intel SSD 320 160GB in my Portege R500 (PPR50E).
However, the BIOS does not detect the new drive. I upgraded the BIOS to the 1.60WIN version , the newest one I found, but the drive is still not detected.
Is there any possible solution? Or I have to throw the drive away?
    Thankyou for any help

    Hi,
thankyou for your answers, but finally I got it.
Previously I tried to do it cloning the drive with Norton Ghost in another computer, but maybe I did not select a correct formatting of the drive, I'm not sure. The point was that it did not work. The Portege R500 said something as insert a drive to continue. And when I tried to start with a CD of Windows XP SP3 installation it said that there was no drive available for the installation.
Nevertheless, when I started with a Ubuntu CD I could access to the drive for reading, but no installation was possible.
Then, I upgraded the Portege BIOS, but it did not work.
Finally I found the Intel software for migration of SSD disk, and it was much easier. I followed the steps, it did the cloning (hopefully I had an external USB-ATA conversor to do it) and changed again the Toshiba drive to the SSD. Without much hope, I turned on the computer ... and it worked! Everything was OK, nothing was changed ... and as expected, it works much faster.
    Regards

  • K9N2 Diamond - bios does not recognise Intel SSD 520 series

    Hi,
I have a K9N2 Diamond motherboard and BIOS v2.7. I recently bought an Intel SSD 520 Series and when I connect it, the BIOS does not recognise the HDD at all. When I try to install Windows 7, the HDD is shown at the list, but it says that I can not install Windows at the HDD.
I have tried to connect the HDD at SATA port 5 and 6 and set the RAID mode to ACHI and also at ports 1 and 2 and set the RAID mode to IDE. Nothing works.
    Any ideas?
    Regards,
    George

.and does the problem appears using the HDD which was equipped in this notebook?
If the BSOD would not appear using the HDD, then a problem is realalted to the inserted SSD drive.
In many cases firmware updates are released for SSD drives and in some cases this might be a solution.

Call Apple's online store's telesales agents: 1-800-MY-APPLE (1-800-692-7753) or Customer Service and Sales Support at 1-800-676-2775. For Lion you'll get a redemptions code via e-mail and need to DL from the Mac Apple Store (requires SL 10.6.6+).

    1. Make a backup, open App Store and purchase Mountain Lion. When its download finishes, close the installer and open Lion Diskmaker to create a bootable USB drive with Mountain Lion.
    2. Press Option key while your Mac is starting, select the external drive and open Disk Utility.
    3. Select Macintosh HD in the sidebar and erase the drive.
    4. Close the window and install Mountain Lion

    I don't think you have a case.
You can replace the logic board yourself if you are a DIY'er and save some money.

  • White 20 inch intel mac osx install problem

I'm trying to reinstall OSX Lion onto an older, 2.16 GHZ, 20 inch intel Mac. I had to reinitialize the hard drive before the install. When I try to perform the install it tells me that "Mac OS X cannot be installed on this computer.  The disk was reinitialized using Mac OS Extended (Journaled). I have noticed, however, that when I select the hardrive (not the partition) in Disk Utility that the Volume Format is MS-DOS (FAT).
Any suggestions or workarounds would be appreciated.
    Gary

The partition should be GUID and the Hard Drive should be Mac OS Extended (Journaled).
    BTW it's an iMac.

It's not just iTunes you need to update...
You need to upgrade to Leopard v10.5.8 at the very least in order to sync, restore, and backup an iPod touch.
See iPod touch system requirements here.
Leopard is available from Amazon here.

Ideally, you should clone your HD as Bimmer 7 Series explains.
However, if your computer originally shipped with Lion or Mountain Lion, a clone is not necessary to merely reinstall OS X. OS X Internet Recovery will create a recovery partition, download the installer package, and install it on a completely empty SSD or HD.
Even if your computer shipped with Snow Leopard, it may be eligible to download a firmware update that creates the same ability: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4904

Shouldn't be having a problem, then. That's the version for ML. Try taking your question to the Safari forum - https://discussions.apple.com/community/mac_os/safari - that's where all the Safari experts hang out.

Get as much RAM as your Mac can take. You will need it.
