Interesting in trying out a mac

Hello all,
I am interesting in trying out a mac but could use some information since I have little experience with this platform.
Ideally, I'd like a laptop that would be used for photo editing (photoshop) and perhaps Aperture, as well as general web/email usage. I don't necessarily need a brand new, top of the line mac. Used would work just fine (basically, I don't want to spend a fortune). However, I'm not sure which model(s) to look for. Given what I want to use it for, would it be possible for someone to suggest what would work well?

If you're serious about using Aperture, then you need the more powerful laptop, the MacBookPro. It's a heavy duty app and would be very slow on the MacBook (which is more of the Consumer machine).
Leave out Aperture and you can go for the Consumer Machine.
You could also look at the earlier machines, the Powerbook g4 or iBook G4. However, as they are using the older PPC hips as opposed to the Intels then their future is limited.
Oh, and no matter which one you go for, put in as much RAM as you can afford.

Have you tried clicking on the lock to see it it will then ask for a passwored. Otherwise, try reblooting.

Tom at the Genius Bar told me that Option Delete would work. It does not.
I had to upgrade to iTunes 11.1.(I26) because it is required with OS7 on my iPod Touch (5th Gen). I have tried shutting down iTunes, then shutting down the entire system. This is the first in many visits that the Genius Bar gave me a solution that did not work.
This is a big awkward computer locked to my desk. I would rather not unlock it and then carry it through a shopping center to the Genius Bar if i can avoid oit.
When I installed iTunes 11.1, I discovered that Ihad to resubscribe to virtually all of the podcasts that I had previously been subscribed to. That was a surprise.

I did not read the rather long post. If you wish to reinstall OS X 10.4, use your software install DVD. Backup is essential. To minimize your risk, I would use an archive and install:

In that way, you will have a fresh copy of OS X and your current settings will be preserved.
Incidentally, I do not agree that the printer problem is best solved by reinstalling OS X. I have had HP printers for sometime and, on one occasion, had difficulty after an upgrade. HP technical support walked me through uninstalling all traces of the HP driver and then reinstalling.

Keep getting error message when trying out a small java program in terminal

I've been trying out running java programs in mac os x terminal. I have eclipse as well, but it's too much for me right now. I copied some programs out of the dummies book I have, just to get a feel for things -- so, I went to the desktop where the program was, and compiled it (I saved it with a .java extension). "javac javaprogram.java" to compile, which it did fine, and then 'java javaprogram' to execute it. It's just a simple line that says 'you'll love java!'. Anyway, it wouldn't execute it.
Here's the program (written in text edit):

Now, I noticed that the first part of the error is "java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: javaprogram". When I tried to run the program, it 'created' or put something on the desktop called Displayer.class, so I'm not sure what's going on. I've compared what I entered to what's in the book, and there are no mistakes on my part.
Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong, and is there any book or site I can go to which will instruct me on running programs in terminal?

For starters, rename javaprogram.java to Displayer.java and dojavac Displayer.java
java Displayerand since you are new to Java, change your source code to public class Displayer.
In Java, files containing a Java class named "ClassName" should/have to be named "ClassName.java".

I´ve already tried with a bunch of different video files and sometimes Qlab plays them and sometimes not. I need the Qlab playlist for a theatre show and only have a week until showtime so starting to really worry. Is there anyone out there who can help?

Command + R gives you access to restore, repair, or reformat the drive using OS X Recovery

The list does not claim features moved to the System are "missing". There are separate lists of added and changed features.
There are many people who claim to know what they are talking about but on closer examination it becomes clear they really do not know much about iWork, nor about the features they claim to have "found" in Pages 5.
I would be hesitant to claim that you were part of the beta testing of Pages 5 for 2 reasons.
1. Apple does ask you to sign a non-disclosure agreement
2. You then are part of the problem
Maybe, now you have disclosed that you were testing, you can explain how on Earth something so bad was released on an unsuspecting public, with no warning of what Apple had done and that it would alter/damage users' work.

Aol 6.0 coming out for macs anytime soon?

Hello, I just recently downloaded the new MSN Messanger, of which is compatible with the intel processors and regular macs. I was wondering if AOL is coming out with a new AIM for mac as well? There is of course iChat, but I use AIM more than I do iChat. It'd be great if someone could inform me whether or not AIM 6.0 will be coming out for macs anytime soon.

Right now I'm running an AIM session, as well as MSN, Yahoo, and two Jabber sessions (GoogleTalk and Jabber.org). But, of course, iChat is best for video.

Effect of a power "brown-out" on Mac hardware? PLEASE HELP!

Please could someone help me to understand the effect of a power "brown-out" on Mac hardware?
I have an iMac 27" (Late, 2013).
I would like to use a solar powered battery device with a 150 Watt External modified sine wave inverter. According to the Mac website, my model will use approx. 78W when idle, and 180W at CPU Max.
So, because I live in South Africa, where we now have load-shedding (planned black-outs depending on national energy grid pressure) I have invested in an EcoBoxx 160 DC + (http://www.ecoboxx.co.za/pages/products.php?app_id=4).
My question is thus: If I use my Mac with the device, and it happens to demand more than the 150W generated by the EcoBoxx, would this cause damage to any of its component parts?
I will only be using MS Word on my Mac under these conditions, so I imagine that if I close all other applications then the power demand of the Mac should not approach CPU max?
Also, if I ran it through a surge protector, would this make a difference?
I would be extremely grateful for any advice or suggestions, as I am desperately trying to complete my PhD dissertation, and cannot afford to continuously suffer the effects of load-shedding!

Open the Universal Access pane of System Preferences, click on the Seeing tab, drag the Contrast slider all the way to the left, set the monitor to Black on White, and turn off the other checkboxes except for those at the bottom of the window.

I have had to erase my disk since then with trouble with Apple Store not recognising my machine and the reload from Time Machine has given complications . Can you please cancel my trial and return my Trial money.

Problem trying to install Mac OS 9

I've had Mac OS X 10.4 installed for a while on this system but after recently upgrading to a new Mac I thought I'd turn this one into a legacy computer to run all my old software. So I used my Mac OS X install discs to wipe the hard drive and install Mac OS 9 drivers but when I tried to install Mac OS 9.2.1 it just shows a floppy disk icon with a blinking question mark. I've tried a few times, reformatting and making sure I installed the Mac OS 9 drivers again but it still doesn't work. Even tried resetting the PRAM with no luck. I can install Mac OS X fine on the system but the Mac OS 9 disc refuses to play ball. I know the Power Mac G4 Digital Audio came with a system specific version of Mac OS 9 but I was told that Mac OS 9.2.1 should be fine.
Any help would be appreciated!

Does your friend's iBook have OS 9 on it? If it does, try starting either computer in target mode (with a firewire cable connecting the two). Then simply drag the OS9 system folder onto your G4. Once the file transfer is complete, open the system folder and double click on the finder and system file. Neither should open, but that lets the computer know they are there. Restart your G4 to see if this works. I would upgrade to 9.2.2 then.

You really need a newer Mac Mini with a true HDMI output, because that Mac Mini's DVI output does not support Audio.
You might try a 3.5mm to RCA adapter
from the Mac Mini's headphone jack to the TV's audio input,
but that would require being able to select the Audio input in the TVs menu while using it's HDMI input.
Optionally you could also use an external 2.1 Speaker System or patch the audio from the Mac Mini to your home stereo system to enhance that older Mac Mini's audio.

What haven't you backed them up? You should always have a back up of any important material on your Mac. Make one now:
Most Simple Back Up
Drag the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to another Disk. This will make a copy on that disk.
Slightly more complex:
Use an app that will do incremental back ups. This is a very good way to work. The first time you run the back up the app will make a complete copy of the Library. Thereafter it will update the back up with the changes you have made. That makes subsequent back ups much faster. Many of these apps also have scheduling capabilities: So set it up and it will do the back up automatically. Examples of such apps: Chronosync or DejaVu . But are many others. Search on MacUpdate

Backup with cloning software your HD to have an exact copy of it as it is.
Use this methodology to recover your partition.

Wipe out Internal Mac Book Pro hard drive

I need help on how to wipe out my internal Mac Book Pro hard drive. I used the Mac Office demo and now the demos are no longer usable. How can I wipe out the mac book pro hard drive? Should I contact my Apple Care service center for assistance, since I am paying for that service and they can walk me through the process? I want to clear out to what it was like when I first got the lappy. Help, anyone? Thanks in advance.

Extended Hard Drive Preparation
1. Boot from your OS X Installer Disk. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger.)
2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
3. Set the number of partitions from the dropdown menu (use 1 partition unless you wish to make more.) Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled, if supported.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the volume(s) mount on the Desktop.
4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled, if supported.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
6. Click on the Erase button. The format process will take 30 minutes to an hour or more depending upon the drive size.
Steps 4-6 are optional but should be used on a drive that has never been formatted before, if the format type is not Mac OS Extended, if the partition scheme has been changed, or if a different operating system (not OS X) has been installed on the drive.
After formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer. Proceed with the OS X installation. Once OS X has been installed and is running you can then run the installer for the pre-bundled software.
