Intermittent landline problems

Ever since moving into my new house in June, the landline has been very unpredictable.  The longest amount of time it has worked consistently is about a week.  It will randomly stop working for any length of time between a day and a few weeks.  Then randomly start working again for between a few hours and a week.
We have had 2 BT engineers out.  The first one replaced the front of the master socket.  The phone line then worked again for a few days.  The next BT engineer replaced the whole master socket.  Again, the landline worked for a few days and then stopped again.  As explained above, without altering anything, the phone will randomly stop and start working.  We used to assume that water was getting in when it rained (the master socked is located by the front door).  But after unscrewing the master socket (when it stops working), we cannot detect any moisture in the socket, or on the wall.  Also, the times the phone stops working seems unrelated to rainfall.  Any ideas?  This is driving us crazy and BT seem unable to help.
Thanks

Thanks for your reply John.  The problem is that whenever the OpenReach engineer comes to the house, they only fix the problem temporarily.  All they seem to want to do is to change the master socket.  When it starts working again (which it seems to always do), they close the fault.  They have done this twice already and I end up taking a day off work just for them to do the same thing again.  I am hoping that someone might have an idea of what the problem could be so I have some suggestions for the engineer.  Thanks again.

my apple tv is disconnected from the wifi intermittently, the problem is not the wifi as it only happens to the apple tv. that I can do to fix this problem.-

That doesn't rule out a network issue, as it can impact devices differently. Intermittent issues are most often related to wifi issues. Try connecting via ethernet. Go to istumbler, netstumbler or similar to get a report of the network, look for signal strength and noise.

  • Intermittent video problem on Adobe Connect Pro

    Hi,
I have this intermittent video problem on the Adobe Connect pro server. The video connent sometime display blank even though it showed playing in the status bar and I can hear the audio part of it. Do someone have similar problem as mine?
    Thanks

I've had to "cache" uploaded videos by playing them shortly before the audience will see them. For me, the cache holding time when using Adobe's servers is about 5 minutes.

  • Not able to connect to DB in Redhat Linux - intermittent wired problem

    Hi,
I need some help from you if possible please help me. There is a wired problem in the Linux based Oracle server.
    OS: Redhat Linux 8
    Database: Oracle Enterprise server 9.2
There is an intermittent wired problem.
After some time (it happen twice last Saturday and Yesterday), either from application or from SQL Plus we are not able to connect it from outside. But we are able to connect to the oracle server on Linux server.
We checked the Listener status on the server and it was UP and running.
We can ping the server from outside.
We are not able to do an FTP from inside the server or from Outside to the Linux server.
During this time the http protocol is working we can upload any file to the other sites.
We tried to shutdown the oracle server and even we tried to restart the OS itself and not able to resole this issue.
If we create a new Listener and starts the server and all blocking thing were released and now working.
Currently we are monitoring the server at ALIF’s premises if it going to happen for the third time or not.
    Thanks a lot
    Regards
    Kumar

What is the error that you get when you try to get connection ?
to check the log file is a good option: <ORACLE_HOME>/network/log/listener.log

  • Intermittent power problem Canon 5D Mark iii

My Canon 5D Mark iii (2 years old) has an intermittent power problem, as described below. It may simply be a question of cleaning the terminals that the battery connects to. I haven’t tried since I can’t reach them at the bottom of the battery compartment.
    Details as follows:
this is a recent problem in the last 3 weeks
the problem occurs with all three Canon batteries that I use
from time to time when the power is on, the camera suddenly loses all power and displays an “empty” battery image
sometimes it happens of its own accord while no demand is being placed on the camera
but more usually it occurs at the moment of focusing (I use back focus on the * button)
it is often fixed by turning the power off and then on again. This fixes it half the time
it is always fixed by turning the power off, removing and then re-inserting the battery
needless to say this is very annoying!
Since coming back from a trip, while transferring images from the camera to my computer, I noticed that the (almost) full battery started showing “empty”.
The transfer was completed successfully, and when the camera was disconnected from the computer, the battery showed that it had lots of charge left. Very puzzling!

It sounds like either the battery terminals aren't getting a solid contact or there's a fault (something loose or grounding out) inside the camera.  But if something were genuinely loose or grounding out inside the camera, then power cycling or even re-inserting batteries would probably not fix it -- which makes me suspect it's still something outside the camera.
Are any of the batteries new, or are they all about the same age as the camera?
Batteries only last a few years but it'll depend on how they were used.  In other words if all three were used about the same and enough charge cycles to be at the end of their reliable life... it might be time to replace them.
It's difficult for the internal battery terminals to get dirty unless the battery itself had something on the battery iteself when you inserted it.  You can try a bit of denatured alcohol on a cotton swap to reach in and clean the terminals.  Also, inspect the batteries to make sure they're all clean.

  • Survey of intermittent email problems on edge

I have posted here before about my iphone having intermittent email problems. Usually when I am on the edge network it can sometimes take minutes before my phone downloads email. Sometimes it never downloads them at all. I have my account setup for imap and thought this may be do to the fact I have 100 email sub folders. However these are only for filing with no server side processing to file mail to individual folders. For the most part the issue is limited to edge network access but sometimes does happen when connected to wifi. Of the 8 or so people I have talked to who own iphones only 1 does not seem to have a problem like this. All 8 of us are on different mail servers also.
So I am curious how many others out there are regularly having issues pulling down email on your iphone? And if so is it limited to edge network access or when you are accessing your mail over wifi? Has anyone owned a blackberry and had issues like these?

I don't have a problem since I fixed it. I have 4 email accounts: 2 POP3, One IMAP and one Exchange configured as IMAP. I never have a problem retrieving email via EDGE or WiFi. Your problem description is too general to recommend a single solution, however.
Blackberrys cannot handle rich text email, so all messages are short and download quickly. On the iPhone if you have a message that contains HTML, graphics or MIME attachments they can be quite large - up to several megabytes. Clearly these will take a long time to download. The same email received by a Blackberry will only get the text version of the message, which is a couple of K.
If you are accessing an Exchange server and get "message could not be downloaded" errors, delete the account and recreate it using IMAP rather than Exchange as the server type.
If you are accessing a POP3 account and you have a primary computer somewhere powered on that periodically retrieves email the message will be removed from the server before your iPhone downloads it sometimes. The solution is to either shut down the mail client when away from the computer or change its options to leave messages on the server.
For IMAP you shouldn't see any of these problems, except that if you open a folder it retrieves messages in that folder AFTER the folder is opened; it doesn't sync folders automatically.

since upgrading to ios7 I have intermittent wifi problems with ipad2

You need a larger internal drive and you definitely need to uninstall any Avast product, using the instructions at the developer's website. A 120GB SSD with only 9.6GB free just isn't going to cut it - you need at least 9GB in free space just to run Mavericks and many people suggest that 10-15% of your disk (particularly on a SSD) should be free space.

  • Intermittent sound problems (circle with slash) since 10.9.1 upgrade.

My 27" iMac (mid-2011, 2.7 i5, 16g RAM) has had intermittent sound problems (circle with slash) since I upgraded to 10.9.1.  I've reset the PRAM, used Disk Utility on the file permissions, tried Audio Midi, and sound prefs steadfastly refuses to use the internal speakers.

Did you install the latest driver set for the device?  there is a new release on motu.com for mavericks.

  • Intermittent NW problems wired/wireless

    Hi,
My iMac experiences some intermittent NW problems.
    Configuration:
iMac is connected (wired) to a USR router which is on its turn connected to my ADSL modem/router.
    Symptoms:
Every now and then (couple of time per day) I'm not able to access the Internet. The internal NW is still OK: I can access both of my routers. When this happens I see that iStat Pro shows that the External IP is being updated. Which is strange, because my laptop which is connected to the same USR router is still able to continue to access the Internet at the same time. So no problem with the external IP address. I checked the modem/router at the time of the drop-out, but that was fine.
I tried using the same UTP cable to connect my laptop iso iMac, still no problem. I tried it connecting the iMac wireless to my router, still the same issue.
I returned the iMac to the service center for having it analyzed, but as expected they didn't experience any issue.
Is there anybody else with the same problem? At first I thought it would be a faulty NW i/f or driver, but as it happens with both the wired/wireless i/f I should think of something else.
    Thanks.

    Hi Gringeiro,
Are you using WEP or WPA wireless security on your router?  I would recommend WPA2 with AES, well, if you want to connect it wirelessly.  Also, it will help if you set a static IP address on the printer.  You can do this by typing the printer's IP address into the address bar of your browser.  Select the Network tab, then look for IPV4 under the Wired or Wireless section, depending upon how you have it connected.  There should be an option to "Suggest Manual IP".  If not, type IPCONFIG from the command prompt (Start/Run cmd) to get your Subnet and Gateway addresses.
If I have solved your issue, please feel free to provide kudos and make sure you mark this thread as solution provided.
Although I work for HP, my posts and replies are my own opinion and not those of HP.

  • Intermittent Graphics Problem

I have an iMac from May 2011.
In the last week it has exhibited a very intermittent graphics problem.
I see that this model had a known graphics card issue and there is an extended 4 year warranty on it.
But it is so intermittent that I wonder if it is something else.
    Running 10.9.4.
This started after I installed a free virus program (Webroot) from my online bank.
Probably a red herring but it made me think it was that.
I reformatted the drive and installed fresh not importing anything.
All was well for a few days.
Then it started again, the display goes blue or pink or sometimes black.  Usually less than once a day but sometimes more.
It has never done it in bootcamp.
Today I booted from the install DVD and ran the extensive hardware test.  Over an hour long and the iMac was very hot afterwards as expected.
    It reported NO PROBLEMS.
I have an appointment Friday but it is 50 minutes one way and I am hesitant to go when I can't replicate it.
Anyone think of anything it could be?

Didn't you see that I reformatted the hard drive and installed fresh, that would solve any problems by antivirus right?

  • New Mac Mini intermittent video problems

I just set up a Mac Mini 2009 version and I'm using 2 LCD monitors. One is a Planar PX2611W and the other is A Samsung Syncmaster 191t. Most of the time they work fine but I'm getting intermittent problems:
    1. The main monitor (plugged into the mini DVI port) occasionally just displays multicolor static noise.
It resolves itself after a couple of minutes.
    2. The secondary monitor (mini display port) was working but then just stopped displaying. I checked the connections and they were good. I was finally able to get it working again by unplugging and replugging in the connection to the mini display port.
Could this be a faulty video card or a faulty display port?

Here is a "must-see" thread from MacBook section:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=8955103&#8955103
I spent more than hour to read and here is the only take-away:
    SwitchResX - http://www.madrau.com/html/SRX/DL.shtml
I tried to add a custom resolution - VESA 1680 x 1050 H: 66.874KHz V: 59.884Hz 119MHz pixel clock, according to the 225MS specification from Samsung. You may check this from the bundled CD from your 226BW. Though, this Samsung suggested resolution made the problem even worse! The screen flash with "multicolor static noise" more frequent!
So I tried to change the V frequency to exactly 59Hz (in CVT-RB simplified mode). The problem...well...I can't say it has gone as I can't spend an hour to look at the screen to check, but I would say, better! It's worth to give it a try!

  • Verizon DSL drops out intermittently: problems for 10 months

Subject: Verizon DSL drops out intermittently:  problems for 10 months
    Hi all,
Just wondering if any one can help.  We had Verizon DSL on our home phone line for six years in Worcester MA.  The first five years we had little to problems.  The last 10 months we’ve have frequent (nearly every day drop out and period where the DSL line can’t connect for minutes to sometimes hours).
We’ve had seven different technicians visit us for a total of thirteen visits.  They’ve replaced the line coming into our house multiple times and isolated our home phone lines from the DSL feed but this hasn’t helped. Verizon tech support can’t seem to get back to me with a detailed plan of what they are going to do next and few representatives return my phone calls.
We’ve also tried at least five router and modems and it hadn’t helped.  They recently changed the DSL card(?) in the local office (~7000 ft away) and said they switched us to ADS2.
We’re still seeing internet drops and we’re at our wit’s end.
    Any ideas?
Here’s our transceiver stats from our Verzion 7500 DSL modem combo:
    Transceiver Revision     A2pB020b3.d20h
    Vendor ID Code          4D54
    Line Mode                   ADSL_2plus

Transceiver Information            Down Stream Path       Up Stream Path
    DSL Speed (Kbits/Sec)            3358                            863
    Margin (dB)                             9.2                               7.0
    Line Attenuation (dB)               44.0                             19.4
    Transmit Power (dBm)21.0                             12.4
    Thanks,

Well, we're getting pretty fed up.  Here's the letter that we are sending out for a Verizon Presidential Appeal...
    To:
     Verizon, St. Petersburg, FL
    Verizon Technical Team, Worcester, MA
The Department of Telecommunications and Cable, Consumer Division, Boston, MA
    Better Business Bureau
    Dear Sirs,
We are writing to lodge a formal complaint about our Verizon DSL service, and the extremely
poor treatment we have received while trying to resolve this (still unresolved) problem. We have had
intermittent internet outages for the last 12 months. This followed five years of normal DSL service at
the same address. Our problems worsened this spring; our internet is out a few minutes to several
hours a day, most days a week. Our next door neighbors have the same problem with their Verizon
DSL service, though they do not use the internet very often so are less affected than we are. We rely
on consistent internet service for our jobs.
We have had 13 technician visits to our home from a total of seven different technicians. On
multiple occasions, we have also been stood up for scheduled technician visits, including days in
which we took off work to be home. Two of these times in which we were stood up were not visits that
Verizon initiated, where we were told we needed to be home. Additionally, we have received
several “auto-calls” informing us that our problem is fixed and our work tickets have been closed. This
is extremely upsetting to us, as our problem has never been fixed as we have explained many times.
Several technicians have spoke confidently (and condescendingly) that their work would fix our
problem; these are generally the technicians we never saw again.
It is clear from our several calls each month to Verizon that persons and departments within
the company do not communicate with one another. Time and time again, we have been shuffled from
person to person, and now believe that no one wants to expend the effort to deal with our problems.
For example, multiple employees have failed to call us back when they said they would. We have
asked several times for a team of creative thinkers (with the authority to act) to brainstorm some sort
of solution and let us know what Verizon was doing to solve our problem. This has not happened. We
have made extensive notes about our service interruptions and our correspondence with Verizon over
the last several months; these are included in this packet. We also have multiple videos across several
months showing that DSL signal is not available.
We believe that a new line needs to be put in from the local hub to our house, a distance of
only a few blocks. (See notes on reverse of page.) At this point, we have no faith that Verizon is
willing to fix this problem and restore service to us. This is truly a shameful way to do business.
If Verizon is unwilling to restore our DSL service to acceptable levels, we would like Verizon to
Notes: This is what Verizon has told us they have done:
    1. Isolated our phone line from DSL.
    2. Replaced the line from our street to our home.
    3. Switched the F2.
    4. Put us on an A-DSL2 card at the local hub.
We have tried seven DSL modems and six routers without success. The problem is not within
our house; that is clear. We believe a new F1 line is needed. We were even told by a company
representative on the phone “well, DSL is on copper wire…” - basically from our view, an admission
that copper wire can go bad, and that this may be the cause of our problems. We have asked for a
new F1 line to be installed several times and been brushed off each time.

  • Veer intermittent problem-unable to send/receive calls

In the past week, I've had a intermittent problem with my Veer being unable to send and receive voice calls.
When the problem occurs, there is no indication of  a problem on the screen--it still says AT&T in the left top corner and shows bars.  However, when I try to use the dialer, it will look like a call is being made, but it just hangs there with no sound.  The dialer will act glitchy, with the screen going black when I try to hang up, then turning on again, then off again, etc.  It seems like the screen goes black when my finger gets near, then comes back on when I move my finger away.  I don't have this problem at all when connected to the network.  Data does not work either.
When someone calls during this time, it usually goes to voicemail after the normal number of rings--it doesn't go straight to voicemail.  I do not receive a missed call notification.
Rebooting the phone will usually show network search... in the top left corner with no bars.  After a time, the network searching indicator will turn off, but there are no bars--or sometimes it will show bars, but there is no AT&T indicator.
I usually try rebooting the phone several times and then eventually the phone will find the network and all is well again for a time.  Once it seemed to simply eventually fix itself without rebooting several times.
When this is happening, it is not a network problem because the other phones of family members are working fine in the same location.
Any advice as to what might be going wrong and how I can fix it will be greatly appreciated.
Also, I'm using my old 3G SIM card since I won the phone in an online giveaway.  Would a new card help or does that have nothing to do with problem?
Post relates to: HP Veer p160una (AT&T)

It sounds like the call is hanging the device and when you move your finger near the proximity sensor is turning off the screen as it should. This could be due to too many apps running, or an app that is causing a conflict. Are you running any preware apps? You also have the option to webOS doctor the device to try and resolve any software issues.

  • Intermittent Audio Problems

I recently started having intermittent audio cut off on my IMac G5 which is 6 months old. All audio to inclue iTunes stops for no apparent reason. This even happens when I am just listening to iTunes and performing no other tasks. Sometimes requires multiple reboots to fix. I checked audio output setting and it's 44100.0 Hz as recommended. Sometimes audio will restart without a reboot. Machine has 1.5G RAM and I do not use it for anything exotic or heavy duty.
Am using a USB hub with printer, scanner and external hard drive attached. Tried disconnecting all, but problem still recurs.
Thanks in advance for any help.

If you plug in headphones into the headphones port do the audio problems persist? I'd like to know if the issue seems to be isolated to the speakers, or to the soundchip and/or sound software.
P.S. Please note, that the iMac (Flat Panel) is actually an iMac G4. The iMac G5 posts you make in the future, please post in this forum:
