Internet Connection Down

I've been having an infuriating day today with no Internet access at home (Billericay exchange). I am an experienced user so had already done all the usual troubleshooting, unplugging of modems, routers etc. Having had dreadful experience in the past with BT's "customer service" department in India, we delayed calling them until this evening, hoping that the fault would have been identified and rectified externally with no intervention from us. I had also read stories on the Internet of service disruptions today elsewhere and had hoped that our issues would be rectified at the same time. With the power lights on the modem on, but the DSL light off, I am pretty sure it is an issue between the exchange and my house and therefore not something I can rectify. This evening we very reluctantly called India and received the usual palming off, meaningless troubleshooting "tips" etc and then quite simply told that there was nothing that could be done. When we demanded to speak to a manager, somebody called and the best that could be done was an appointment on Monday. He also tried to palm me off with an Openzone subscription in the interim, which as we all know is useless unless you live next to Starbucks! When we are paying £62 a month including line rental that is quite simply unacceptable. Given past experience I also have zero confidence in them actually keeping that time. Quite simply I am exhasperated and, despite it being cutting my nose off to spite my face, will be looking to get out of my new 18 month Infinity contract.

  • Internet connection down every 20 mins

    Hello, everyone
Today I asked my ISP to configure my modem/router as a bridge, and then connected a TL-WR541G (TP-LINK) router to manage ports and such.
Since then, after every 20 minutes Internet access goes down, I'm still connected (apparently) to the network, but with the exclamation mark and the legend: "No internet access" or "No network access". The only solution to this is to unplug the power supply, wait 10 seconds and plug it again. After that, Internet access is back. This generally happens every 20 mins, but it has lasted up to 1 hour with good connectivity before it goes down again.
The router has DHCP enabled, but I have a surveillance ip camera with an IP fixed to its MAC address (in order to let the port open correctly every time I reset the camera). The DHCP range, of course, doesn't include the ip fixed to the camera. Even so, I got a "two devices with the same IP" error a couple of times, even when this wasn't happening according to the connected devices list in the router configuration.
    Modem: Motorola SBG901
    Router: TL-WR541G
Connected devices: notebook (DELL Inspiron N4110, Windows 7), surveillance camera (TL-SC3171G), desktop PC, Tablet, 2 smartphones, Smart TV.
If any log or other information is required, please let me know.
Any help will be much appreciated.
    Thanks in advance.

  • Internet Connection down shortly after install / O...

I ordered Infinity a couple of weeks ago, and the Openreach Engineer visited a couple of days ago.
The install went great, and the speeds I got during were AMAZING!
However, about three hours after the engineer left, my HH3's Broadband Light light changed to a steady Orange, and I lost all Internet Access. I called the Support and they said this was because things don't go properly active until Midnight. (This seemed odd, as it had worked perfectly during the afternoon).
The following morning it still wasn't working, so I called the support again, and they said it was because the OpenReach Engineer hadn't updated his notes to say he'd completed the job.
Another 48hrs later, (3 of which spent on hold to BT), I'm no further finding out what is wrong, or when it's going to be fixed. All I get is "Your job is still open, that's why it doesn't work".
All the order-tracking website says is "Your Broadband order is in hand with a member of our team, if there are any issues we will contact you. Please continue to check online for further updates".
Any ideas how I can get ANY info from BT as to when this might get fixed? Is there a magic number to call? ;-)
    Further Info:
All 3 lights on the VDSL Modem light, so it's getting Sync. (I originally thought it may have overheated, and that's all the problem is).
Does anyone know what the default IP of it is, or if it responds to ping? Plugging a laptop directly into it and pinging the Broadcat IP of all the private IP ranges doesn't find it - so I'm wondering if it IS just the modem that's broken?
    Thanks in advance!

I don't think its your modem, as you say you have 3 green lights... Its looks like what BT told you is correct .i.e. If engineer for what ever reason has not closed job correctly, BT think your line has not been installed, the only way to sort this out is to make another appointment and when engineer calls up to say they are on the way, tell them no visit needed, just please close job off complete.... Now really BT should be able to do this over the phone, however because the work is done by Openreach this causes problems ( one of our managers had the same problem and it took 3 attempts to finally sort out ).... Just on the off chance you could try turning off just the HUB and then see if when switched on it goes straight orange or goes red/purple ( this is the hub authenticating )... Good luck

  • Slow Internet Connection Speeds caused by Ethernet Controller Driver

Problem:  Internet connection speeds are 1/10 of available connection speed.
    1. Problem statement is based on running speed tests at cnet, speedtest.net, and AT&T.
    2. I am paying for 12 MBps down load speed but I only get about 1.5 MBps.
    3. Other computers in household get 11+ MBps connected to the same ethernet cable and also different ethernet cables.
    4. I traced the problem to the network controller driver.
    5. I updated to the latest driver with no change in performance.
    6. After some experimenting I found that if I re-install the driver after the computer is booted up, the internet connection down load speeds increase to 11+ MBpS (typically around 11.4 with maximum capability of 12)
I have assumed that the driver does not load properly the first time, but why?  Or is there some other cause or setting that I have overlooked?

  • Airport Extreme slowing down internet connection to a crawl

    Hi,
    Can anyone explain this one?
Just this afternoon my internet connection slowed to a crawl. Pages would stall loading and I couldn't even collect emails. There was a connection there. A Google search might take a minute or so but anything else would barely flinch.
So I did a few restarts and complete power downs of all my peripherals, computers and network devices but no joy. I called my broadband provider who did a remote test of my cable modem and confirmed it was responding well.
So I removed the Airport Extreme from the network and connected directly to the modem. All was fine, in fact that is how I am working now. But when connecting the Airport Extreme back in I have this extremely slow connection. I have looked at both the Network preferences and Airport Setup Utility. Both claim the connection is good.
I also have an old G4 in another room. It was switched off during all the goings on this afternoon but I powered it up to see if the same problem persisted. Sure enough it does, as it is also connected via the AE. However, the local connection between computers is just fine.
So how do I resolve this? Why would the AE cause such an internet slowdown?
    Thanks,
    Colin

I've had similar symptoms on my network. Here are network details:
    Comcast is the ISP
I have an Extreme and an Express set up as a single wireless network.
Extreme is plugged in to the cable modem. Express is an extension of the Extreme.
Devices that are regularly "on network": Mac Mini (G4), MacBook, Mac Pro, 2 TiVO Series 2.
    All Macs are running 10.4.10.
Symptom: Over the course of 3-6 weeks, wireless access slows to a crawl for the Intel-based MacBook and MacPro, but not the PowerPC Mini. All web sites, email traffic, etc., for the Intel Macs becomes painful: CNN's home page loads in minutes, not seconds, for example. Unplugging and replugging the Express doesn't do anything. Powering off and on the Extreme resolves the issue. For now. There are no pending firmware updates for the Express or Extreme that I'm aware of.

  • Up and Down Internet Connection

Recently my MacBook is having up and down internet connection. I'm using the new Aiport Extreme base station which is connected to my cable modem. By up and down I mean, the connection seems to go in and out.
My Airport signal status is full bars, so it seems to see the base station. It is like the radio signal or whatever gets tangled and drops connection. I have completely reset the base station and started fresh. I've unplugged the modem and base station and gone through all the basic troubleshooting steps.
My wife has a PowerBook G4 and she can surf with no hiccups, while my machine stalls. One thing I have done to keep a solid connection is to connect iTunes to an internet radio station. It seems like the stream keeps the connection without dropping?
Any ideas on what is going on? Is my internal airport card bad or are is there something else going wrong? Any help or insight is appreciated.
    Thanks.

    Try…
    1) Resetting PRAM…

    2) Setting your Airport to connect to "Preferred networks" rather than Automatic (done in System Preferences > Network > Airport > Airport)
    3) Make sure your home network is at the top of your Preferred networks list
    4) Failing those delete your wireless network profile, apply the change and readd your profile

I am not able to access the "Settings" on my iPad 3. I just get a gray screen for about 30 seconds and then the app shuts down. I am also unable to access the App store, iTunes, or any app requiring an internet connection. Any thoughts?

First, try a system reset.  It cures many ills and it's quick, easy and harmless...
Hold down the on/off switch and the Home button simultaneously until the screen blacks out or you see the Apple logo.  Ignore the "Slide to power off" text if it appears.  You will not lose any apps, data, music, movies, settings, etc.
If the Reset doesn't work, try a Restore.  Note that it's nowhere near as quick as a Reset.  Connect via cable to the computer that you use for sync.  From iTunes, select the iPad/iPod and then select the Summary tab.  Follow directions for Restore and be sure to say "yes" to the backup.  You will be warned that all data (apps, music, movies, etc.) will be erased but, as the Restore finishes, you will be asked if you wish the contents of the backup to be copied to the iPad/iPod.  Again, say "yes."

  • When an internet connection is available, I run iTunes and it shuts down on my Windows 7 64bit computer.

When an internet connection is available, I run iTunes and it shuts down on my Windows 7 64bit computer.  It used to crash when I went to the iTunes store but, after installing the newest version of iTunes it crashes if there is an internet connection.  I can turn off my internet access and then run the software but, once I try the iTunes store again it crashes.  It does not give an error message as to why its doing this.  Just says it encountered a problem.  I cannot do anything with my iPad or iPod without this working.  Its extremely frustrating.
I have also contacted Apple several times and they give me links to other's problems but, none have worked to fix this.

    Close your iTunes,
    Go to command Prompt -
(Win 7/Vista) - START/ALL PROGRAMS/ACCESSORIES, right mouse click "Command Prompt", choose "Run as Administrator".
    (Win XP SP2 & above) - START/ALL PROGRAMS/ACCESSORIES/Command Prompt
In the "Command Prompt" screen, type in
    netsh winsock reset
    Hit "ENTER" key
    Restart your computer.
If you do get a prompt after restart windows to remap LSP, just click NO.
Now launch your iTunes and see if it is working now.

  • I lose internet connection after shutting down

I lose my internet connection whenever I shut down my desktop. I know it's not my modem or router because laptops, iphones and ipods all have a great signal and connection. This only started happening after I downloaded the latest software update 2 weeks ago. I have a Motorola modem and Apple extreme router.

last two days exactly the same - it states that my network is not available and yet shows it, I then have to re enter the password, also date had reverted back to Jan 1st, however, there was one bonus, scrole on the mouse now works correctly again!

I rented a Movie and it has been loading for 3 hours now. Internet connection is fine. Have never had a problem with this before. What's really annoying is that the 24 hour time limit is counting down even though we cant watch it. Any suggestions?

The first thing to check would be your internet download speed, you can do this at www.speedtest.net.
HD movies require a recommended speed of 6 Mbps, while SD movies require a recommended speed of 2.5 Mbps.
Additionally, your 24 hours don't start until you begin to watch the movie, you have 30 days to start watching the movie.

  • WRT54GL: Losing Internet Connection after shutting down computers

I've got a Linksys wireless router, the WRT54GL.
When we set up the router and connect to the internet everything works fine. But when we shut down our wired computers and restart the laptop, the internet connection is gone, but I keep my local area connection. I already have done a firmware upgrade (v4.30)
Our configuration is as following: A Zyxel Multi-user PC modem, straight cable from normal interface to the WAN interface of the linksys router. Our (2) computers are connected by cable to the router, while we use the laptop for wireless connection.
Any suggestions to fix this problem?

  • Open ports slow down my internet connection. How to close them? What to do?

My MacBook Pro has massive problems with internet connectivity. At times the connection is blazingly fast, at times unbelievably slow.
I've spoken to my internet provider who was able to inform me that my computer opens up 500-700 ports which is probably what's slowing down the network connectivity. When I'm online with the MacBook Pro, the web gets unstable – also for other connected devices like iPad etc.
The web supporter asked me to run an anti-virus scan which I did – with no results. The problem persists. When my MacBook Pro is not online, there are approximately 15 ports open, when I log on the web that number increases to between 500 and 700.
    Is this normal?
Can anyone tell me how to solve this issue?
How do I figure out which application opens these ports? (and how to close them?)
I tried logging into another user account on the computer and the problem seemed to disappear, indicating that it is caused by something run only on my user account.
    Hope someone can help me..

Open ports don't slow down your computer. The tech support person you spoke to doesn't know what they are talking about.
Basically, when you are using a web browser, opening a page means that the browser needs to open a connection for each element in the page (e.g., it needs to grab each picture, CSS, and JavaScript file that the page requires). This could be a couple of dozen, or it could be hundreds (and there's no telling what Flash content on the page will do). The browser tries to mitigate things a bit using a cache (you might check to make sure the cache is turned on, but this is the default setting). However, this is how all browsers work and how the whole system is designed to operate. You cannot "close" any ports, and they don't linger open, they remain open only as long as data is being transferred. This is expected and appropriate behavior.
The most likely culprit is that you are receiving poor DNS service from your service provider. Every time the computer sees an address like 'http://www.google.com', it needs to send out a request to figure out what numerical address goes with the human-readable name. If the DNS service your system is assigned to use doesn't respond lightning-quick, your experience is going to be very sluggish.
You might want to add an external DNS service to your list of DNS providers. Go to System Preferences > Network, select the network you are using on the left (Ethernet or AirPort), and click the 'Advanced' button. Click on the 'DNS' tab, then press the '+' button under the left panel. I would add the OpenDNS.com DNS servers. Add the following DNS addresses:
    {quote}
    208.67.222.222
    208.67.220.220
    {quote}
Click the 'OK' button. And then the 'Apply' button to save the changes.
That will probably fix the problem. If it doesn't the next most likely issue is either network congestion (e.g., your ISP's network is just too busy; a very common thing for small ISPs and cable Internet service), or the remote site that you are trying to contact is simply not performing so well.
