Interpret footage vs dropping onto timeline

Hey fellas -
Can someone explain the difference between using the Modify | Interpret Footage option vs just dropping the footage onto your timeline?
Example:  4K 24P source footage on a 1080P 23.976 timeline
Any sound synch problems with either option?

I've found there is a difference between 24 exact and 23.976.  If you have 24 exact, just use a sequence with that frame rate.

  • Strange problem - cant drop an mov file onto timeline

Hello, I'm having a strange problem with a couple of mov files. these were all shot with the same camera, Canon 5d mkII, I have 2 mov files, one shot right after the other within 10 minutes of eachother, one of the files I can drop onto the timeline and the other it wont let me, also I've found a couple other mov files from another shoot that I can not drop onto the timeline, wehereas the majority of files from various shoots I can.
Any ideas or possible solutions to this problem?
Again, same camera, same computer, same everything, however a few that wont import while the majority will.

  • Interpret Footage Jitter

Recently shot a project on the C500.  Loads of interviews shot MXF, 23.976, then B Roll was shot 4K to the Odyssey at 59.94 FPS.  We brought the MXF footage straight into the project using the Canon XF MPEG2 1080i/p Timebase: 23.976fps preset.  The 4K footage we transcoded in Davinci Lite 10, everything went to ProRes 422LT 59.94 fps.
The ProRes 59.95 fps footage was imported into Premiere, we then interpreted assuming a 23.976 fps so it would play back slow motion on our 23.976 timeline.  Slow motion is definitely working but the 59.94 fps ProRes 422LT footage is jittery as hell on the timeline.  Also insanely jittery on export - not smooth and buttery as it should be.
The QT files play fine in QT player.  We tried re-encoding to ProRes 422 HQ, 444, all at 59.94 fps - same import, interpret, drop to timeline.  Crap.  So jittery.
Any advice out there on how to smooth that footage out so it plays nice an smooth on a 23.976 timeline?
    System specs:
Running Premiere Pro 7.2.2 - MacBook Pro 15 inch 2.7 Intel Core i7, OS X 10.8.5, 16 GB ram.  NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M.

Rather than using Interpret on the 59.94 clips, leave them as-is and apply 40% slow mo, see what that does.
    Thanks

  • Interpret footage - Music Video

    Hi there!
I have filmed clips in 60fps and wanted some of them to play at normal speed for my video.
So I've changed the clips to play at 59,94 and it all looks fine.
The problem is when someone tries to do a grading of those clips in Da Vinci.
Da Vinci seems to have problem of finding the right source file.
It looks like Premiere has made copies of the source file if I change the interoperation of the clip.
Now, the right way to do this is of course to start a new project and import the files again and only change the speed inside the project. (Speed/Duration)
    But...
I've spent 2 weeks on this video to get the right timing and feeling for it.
Is there any way I can look at each clip on the timeline and change it for the original fps and then only change Speed/duration inside the project?
I would be forever thankful if someone could help me out with some information!
    Best, Elias

If your footage is interlaced just drop it in an interlaced sequence.
On export you set the export settings to progressive.
Always deinterlace in the field options is used basicly for stills (or freeze frame) in a interlaced enviroment
Or when a clip has a speed of < 100%.
Reverse Field Domanance is something left over from the SD period were avi's were lower field.
One can use this also when a clip has a speed of >100% or is played reversed, but I think this also applies only to SD footage with lower field.
I would only use interprete footage when I know Premiere is interpreting the fields wrong.

  • Putting 60p footage in a 25p timeline?

    Hi gang,
I know that CS5 can handle 60p from the GoPro HD camera without problems, but my question is what happens if I try to put footage from this camera in a 25p timeline? Thinking of using a GoPro HD camera as a crashcam, shooting in 60p for slo-mo. Is it feasible to put this footage into a 25p timeline without major problems?
    Thanks for any input!

Sure thing. However, if you want it slo-mo, you'll have to interpret the footage as 25fps (or whatever your desired frame rate is); you have to tell Premiere how many frames you want to playback in a given amount of time (i.e. one second). If you don't interpret the footage, Premiere will simply drop and/or interpolate frames as necessary to match the 60 frames per second of the source footage to the 25 frames per second of the destination sequence.
When imported, right-click your clip and select Modify > Interpret Footage; you'll want to select the "Assume this frame rate" option and enter your desired frame rate.

  • Some Apple Loops refuse to index when dropped onto the Loop Browser

I'm hoping somebody has a fix for this odd problem. Some of the Apple Loops which came with version 1.0.1 refuse to index via the loop browser.
First off, I had to re-install GarageBand 1.0.1 after an invalid library error message appeared after upgrading to Tiger. The re-install wasn't completed totally and it did the same thing on 2 attempts. The next error message was: Apple Loops are missing, or something to that effect. I had to install the Apple Loops found in HD->Library->Application Support->GarageBand by dropping them onto the GarageBand Loop Browser at the bottom of its window. It indexed them, they appeared, and I was happy.
Today, for some reason, I looked through the loops folder mentioned above and noticed about one third of the loops do not appear in the Loop Browser, naturally some really neat stuff is missing! So I decided to drag & drop these Apple loop files onto the browser individually. It says it's indexing them, althought the guitar icon in the dock jumps while doing so, but they never appear and don't show-up in the search box either. They can however be dropped onto the Timeline from the Finder and will play as a music file. The problem is that I cannot listen to them from the loop browser for easy selecting when arranging.
Is there any way to get these stubborn Apple files to appear & play in the Loop Browser? I was hoping they could be added via the Timeline to the Loop Browser, but have had no success. Also, I tried the Apple Loops Utility thinking maybe the appropriate tags were missing, but can't figure out what is missing, if anything.
Thanks in advance for your help.

The Loop Browser filters what it displays by only showing loops in the same Time Signature as the song you've created, and within 2 semitones of the Key your song is in.
You can change the latter by tuning off Keyword Browsing in GB's preferences.

  • How to set up so that 1920 x 1080  h.264 files don't need to be rendered when importing onto timeline

Is there a way to set up final cut express to default to the proper settings so that 1920 x 1080 h.246 mov files don't have to be rendered when dropped onto the timeline? It is really not efficient to work on something when it takes hours to render. Thanks

    Thanks Tom,
Is it the same in fcs? Or does fcs have the capacity to import without render to timeline?
    Appreciate the reply.

  • Interpret Footage works fine in pre8 but NOT pre9

I use pre8 at work - use Interpret Footage all the time to Conform to - PAL widescreen. It works fine. No problems.
I have just purchased pre9 for use at home. Interpret Footage does NOT work. The video fails and the audio fails. Not good. Problem.
I am using the exact same footage, camera, project settings etc.
Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you.

I suspect that your issue has nothing to do with your video footage, camcorder, but everything to do with a glitch in the Premiere Elements 9.0/9.0.1 Interpret Footage feature. It is not a fatal glitch unless you overlook what is happening. I will describe it, and let us see if this is the cause of your issue.
Let us say that I have Premiere Elements 9.0/9.0.1 with a video file on the Timeline, frame rate 29.97 frames per second and maybe Pixel Aspect Ratio = Square Pixels. The choices are not important. It is what happens in trying to change anything like these in Interpret Footage Premiere Elements 9.0/9.0.1. For now let us say that you want to change just the Pixel Aspect Ratio to something else.
    a. I right click the video file in Project Media View, select Interpret Footage from the menu.
    b. In the Interpret Footage dialog, I go to Pixel Aspect Ratio and change it from Square Pixels to something else. Then I click OK.
    c. Then, when I resume operation in the workspace, the Pixel Aspect Ratio will be Square Pixels, BUT the frame rate will be 1.00 instead of 29.97.
Whether or not you are going to change the Frame Rate there, you need to select and type in the desired frame rate in the field where it says "Assume the frame rate ___"
In my case, even though I did not alter "Frame Rate from File" = 29.97, the typing cursor jumps to the Assume this frame rate field ____ when you open the Interpret Footage dialog. If you are changing the frame rate anyway, you would never know the problem. But, when you are only changing the Pixel Aspect Ratio, often this glitch goes unnoticed.
Bottom line: In your PAL system, if the file frame rate is 25 frames per second and you want to change just the Pixel Aspect Ratio in Premiere Elements 9.0/9.0.1, be sure to type in 25 in the field for Assume this frame rate to prevent the result of 1.00 frames per second.
Please check this out and see if this is happening in your case.
    Thanks.

  • Drop Frame Timeline with 59.94 Editing Timebase

I'm working with DVCPRO HD footage for broadcast television. My Editing Timebase is 59.94 and under the Timeline Options tab the checkbox to select a Drop Frame timeline is grayed out. I have a sequence that needs to be EXACTLY 22 minutes in running time, but I can't find a way to change to a Drop Frame timeline. I have found this to be the case for all 59.94 sequences. Any suggestions?
    Final Cut Pro 6.0.1
    MacPro1,1   Mac OS X (10.4.10)   Dual-Core Intel Xeon, 3 GHz, 2 Processors, 4 GB memory

Most TV shows that are broadcast are cut in NTSC, non-drop frame.
I think that you'll find that to be incorrect. The SEQUENCES are always drop frame...because we need to know the proper show times. It is the CAMERA MASTERS that are mostly shot NDF...for the clean lists. IN the past (and still currently I suppose) when dealing with onlining on a tape to tape system or sometimes with an Avid Symphony, you needed NDF masters for the clean workable EDL. That is becoming less of the norm lately, but it is still wise to shoot one format...DF or NDF, instead of mixing. NDF camera masters are the norm.
But DROP FRAME NTSC sequences are the norm. Although NDF HD sequences are the norm lately, but I wonder if that is due to the NLEs that don't offer DF timelines. Which is stupid, as the decks are DF capable.

  • Importing completed project onto timeline of in-progress project.

As newbie on Adobe Premiere Pro CC 2014, I am trying to import at entire project (Pool League) into an "in progress" project (2015-02-09).  I have already done File>Import and found "Pool Project" and gotten it onto the project panel.  I tried to drag and drop onto the timeline of (2015-02-09 News) and it would not do the operation.  Then I double clicked it up to the source panel, and attempted the same thing....nothing.  Then I remember something about "sequence", typed it into project panel, tried again....nothing.  Then I recalled something about "new sequence from clip", tried that and "Pool League" completely over-rode "2015-02-09 News".  I know there must be some simple explaination but I'm coming up blank.  Thank you, in advance, for your help.  I am working Premiere 2014 CC on a windows 8.0.
Sorry, apparently I sent this twice.  Oh, well.

  • Cant used adobe premier elements Interpret footage in premier elements 11

Cant used adobe premier elements Interpret footage in premier elements 11  help

    doogiehowser72
This is not Adobe. We are Premiere Elements users trying to help Premiere Elements users. We try to answer as soon as we see an issue presented. But we do not have a fixed schedule.
We need to backup on this to find out exactly what you want to gain with Interpret Footage. And, what you are doing?
I am a little concerned when you write "...try to change the aspect ratio of the full screen...". You cannot change the aspect ratio of the full screen with Interpret Footage or anything else within the project.  The Edit Mode monitor that you see before you is determined by the project preset that you or the project is setting.
In Premiere Elements 11 the program steps in front of you and automatically sets the project preset according to the properties of what you drag to the Timeline for the first time. Sometimes it does it OK, sometimes not. When it does not, then you set the project preset yourself manually before you import your media into the program.
To do that, open your new project, go to File Menu/New/Project and set the project preset that matches the properties of your source media that you will bring in after you set the project preset. Before leaving the new project dialog, make sure that you have a check mark next to "Force Selected Project Setting on this Project". Then close out of there. In the workspace, go to Add Media and bring in your source media.
DO NOT use the File Menu/Interpret Footage if you want to change the frame rate or pixel aspect ratio of anything that you have already imported. Go to the imported file in Project Assets, right click it, select Interpret Footage, and work with the Interpret Footage dialog that opens.
I suspect that you may be using Interpret Footage for something other than what it is supposed to be used for.
I am getting the Help message, but I cannot help you without details of what you are doing.
If you are not understanding what I am trying to tell me, do not hesitate to let me know. I will re-write the information if necessary. But to do that I need details to work from.
    We can solve this issue.
    Thank you.

  • Stabilizing UHD footage on a 1080 timeline.

Has anyone yet come up with a clever workaround to stabilize UHD footage on a 1080 timeline without losing resolution if the warp plugin is scaling up the nested footage in Premiere pro cc?
    /Per

Now I've finally figured it out. I went to bed and woke up with the solution in my head. :-)
I drop my 4k footage on my 1080 timeline and trims it to the desired length. Then I right-click on the footage, and press "Make subclip". Then I will make a new sequence from that subclip by dragging it to the "New Item" icon. This creates a 4k timeline with my trimmed clip. I will then apply the Warp stabilizer and let it do it's thing. When it is done I'll go to the effects controls and choose "Stabilize Only" under borders/framing. That leaves me with a 4k clip that is NOT scaled up, and therefor the very same resolution as when shot. I now simply drag that 4k subclip into my 1080 timeline, and scale it down to what I want, and of cause to a point where it fills the frame at all times

  • Using 1080i footage in a 720p timeline?

Just curious if anyone out there has used some 1080i footage in a 720p timeline. Does the 1080i stuff convert to 720p very well? Does it look like progressive video? I'm asking because my main camera is the JVC HD100 (720p native) and I want to know if I can match footage from the Sony Z1U (1080i) in a 720p timeline.

Unfortunately, just letting FCP do this will produce pretty unacceptable results, it just drops frames and does not deinterlace.
Shake will do this very nicely, and its recent big price drop makes it an attractive tool to have around. Alternatively, you could use a free utility called MPEG Streamclip from Squared5 (http://www.squared5.com/svideo/mpeg-streamclip-mac.html). Among many other conversion tasks, I've used it's downrezing and deinterlacing capabilities to do exactly what you want (Z1U footage to 720p) and it does a very good job.

  • Edit HD footage in a PAL timeline

    Hello gurus!
I will be editing a commercial with the latest FCP installed on my laptop. The commercial will be shot entirely on a Phantom Camera (1920x1080 HD). I will export the Phantom footage to TGA or Tiff sequences and then import them into FCP. The finished product will be delivered in PAL format.
I guess what we want to do is edit the HD footage in a Pal timeline but have the full 1920x1080 resolution available so as to perform various zooms on the HD footage and still retain PAL quality. The zooms will not be exceeding PAL limit i.e we will not zoom in the HD footage past 720x576 pixels.
Will this work if i just follow the above procedure, import HD footage and use a PAL timeline? Will this retain full HD quality of my footage or will the PAL timeline force the footage into 720x576? Will I probably have to render all the time? I am opting for delivering a title-less finished film in Pal format and then hand it over for the titles to be placed at a later stage.
I am new at HD so any help will be appreciated.
    Thanks
    Tolis

    Thanks a lot you guys,
like you all said, it is as simple as importing HD footage and editing them on a SD timeline. Here's what i did:
I took my image sequences and converted them to ProRes .mov in Quicktime then dropped them into a DV Pal project with the DV Pal Sequence Preset (I tested both High Quality and Proxy and both work in FCP with no need to render) and voila, i have HD footage to pan and zoom around to!
This is what i wanted to do.
I also did a few tests and i am posting the questions that came up in the process.
When i did the test i realized that whichever workflow we devised, i would have to convert my image sequences to video before bringing them into Final Cut!
Any other way to create video files out of image sequences besides QuickTime Pro or Mpeg Streamclip?
Is the HQ ProRes codec or any other ProRes Codec good enough to retain all color space so as if i convert all my Tiff Sequences to it i can use as my new source for online?
I also tried to work with the HD Tiff files directly into FCP and would like to know what would the best Sequence Preset be. I used 1920 x 1080/HDTV 1080i (16:9), square pixels and no field dominance. For the compressor part i found out that if i use uncompressed 10 or 8 bit, i can work without rendering, same with the Apple ProRes but if i put Tiff as a compressor i need to render to work. Can you explain a bit more on what the compressor option refers to in the sequence settings?
Another thing i tried is the Auto Conform option for new sequences but it appears to not work when i drop a tiff file into the sequence. I guess FCP does not consider this video to conform the sequence to.
Again thanks a lot for all the help. I will mark this thread solved once we discuss a bit more the new questions that came up.

  • Re-interpreted footage metadata is lost when moving Premiere Pro CC 2014 project file to different computer

    Hi guys,
I believe this is just a bug in Premiere Pro CC 2014 (and other versions in the past), but I wanted to make sure it was on the PP team's plate for the next update, since it's detrimental to a workflow that include more than one computer or more than one editor on a project.
My team shoots a lot of footage in slow-motion (for instance, 59.94 for 23.976). Premiere's process to conform this footage is great. Modify -> Interpret Footage -> Assume this frame rate: "23.976".
Unfortunately, when we move this project file to another system, even if we are using a hard-drive that is synced to have the exact same source media files with the exact same file structure, we lose the footage interpretation metadata. Premiere Pro CC thinks this footage is 59.94 again, and our sequences are in shambles. All clips where the interpretation metadata is lost have "zebra pin stripes" on them wherever they exist in our sequences.
We have to manually re-interpret the footage, and then sometimes manually re-select in and out points. This is a work-around that enables us to push forward, but it's a barrier that makes collaborative editing extremely challenging and opens up rampant possibility for error. It's hard to locate every clip we need to re-interpret in some of our more complex projects, and even harder to avoid re-interpreting the wrong clips.
Looking forward to a resolution to this problem.

Guys I solved my own problem - thought I'd share with you how in case anyone else is having this problem -
    I came across this thread
Premiere Pro CC error message and crash
    which had the suggestion -
"Do tou have after effects installed? If yes, please try to import the main sequence into it and then export it as premier pro project from file/export ootion and then try to open that in premiere pro."
This didn't work for me too but I did try and import my existing project into a new project and copy all the files over. Works fine now.
I don't know if I will have the same issue again tomorrow so I'm going to render out a super high res video before I close premiere just in case
