Ipad 2 vs. motorola xoom

I decided to buy the new motorola xoom while waiting for my ipad 2, which is not slated to even ship until april 24. Just wondering if anyone has both and can offer an honest comparison between the two? One thing I have noticed is when I call motorola with a question, they don't even ask for a serial number for tech support, they just help you solve your problem. That is curious. I like having the inputs and outputs, but that is not a major point for me. I have read that the ipad screen is brighter. Any comments are welcome. I am a long time apple person, by the way and have only had macs since way back in 1988, when I had a Mac SE, so I am not a troll. I do love gadgets though.
thanks in advance,
Joe

Joe,
While I don't own a Xoom, I have an eLocity A7 tablet that is based on the exact Nvidia Tegra 2 Dual Core processor as well as the first generation Apple iPad. There are key advantages to owning an Android tablet versus the iPad.
One reason is the ability to use Flash. I believe the new Flash 10.2 is available for Honeycomb and Froyo devices. I am running a modified Dexter ver 1.41 Froyo 2.2 ROM with Adobe Flash 10.2 on my eLocity A7 and while people here talk about Flash as being a video thing which you can do with HTML 5, there are instances that forms, multi-media photographic and financial websites that use Flash for graphs, charts, research info and photographs. If you need these abilities to access those sites, you WILL NOT BE able to do this with an iPad 2 period. Not even Skyfire will come to your rescue! This is one reason I had to have an Android tablet to go with my business trip complementing my iPad and the Kensington bluetooth keyboard.
So my advice to you is to check all your sites to ensure that they do not need Flash.
Now granted that there are apps available for the iPad that provides the workaround, but for what I use, the workaround was totally useless and painfully slow.
Having said that, the iPad 2 is a more polished product compared to Honeycomb. A lot of people had said that some apps crash on the Xoom. This is to be expected as there aren't a lot of apps available specifically for tablets and for that matter this new Dual Core processor. This is one of the frustrating aspects owning an Android tablet I find.
As for Malware stuff on Android devices. That's only pertaining to phones and tablets that's rooted out of the box and given some supervisory role on apps. If you are at that level, then you are a hacker and if you get infected; then well it is your problem and choice! Don't blame on some devices. My Android tablet comes rooted out of the box and I installed a non-factory Dexter ROM to provide great functionality compared to stock; but that is my choice and I accept all of the consequences. But then again,
there are people with iPhones and iPads who jailbroke them and get problems downloading un-approved applications other than the App store from Apple.
If you want a well polished device with a good amount of well established apps, I vote for the iPad 2. However, if you need Flash more than 30 to 50% of the time, then the Xoom is your choice and then you need to be wise in populating with the apps you need to use.
Hope this helps.

  • Google Play won't allow me to install Firefox onto my Motorola Xoom

    When I attempt to install Firefox on my Motorola Xoom I am met with the follow message: This item is not compatible with your device.
    Is there a reason for this?

    Unfortunately, Firefox for mobile does not support tablets (such as the Xoom) yet. The developers are actively working on adding tablet support. You can help test an [https://wiki.mozilla.org/Mobile/Platforms/Android#Download_Aurora Aurora build] but you may encounter stability issues, among other issues. It should not be considered a replacement for your primary browser.
    You may need to allow installation of non-Market apps.

  • Reader for Motorola Xoom - Android 3.0

    We have chosen the Motorola Xoom as our tablet of choice for our
    Board of Directors.  Major problem: we cannot install Adober Reader on it. The Android Market says "This item is not compatible with your device".
    Please make the Reader available to 3.0 users!

    Hello,
    I am assuming that you are using the official Android market from Google. A team member of mine was suggesting that you may have an older cache of the marketplace in your device. Adobe does not officially support Android 3.0 for Reader as of now.
    Having said that we are working on it hope to release it quite soon.

    Hi, this is the site for the latest smartphones for Flash Player:

    If Flash Player is available for the Motorola Xoom, it should be on the Android Market site.
    From what I've read, there may have been a delay, but not sure.

  • Is Flash player 10.1 compatible with Motorola Xoom?

    I know that the optimized 10.2 version of flash player is coming for the Motorola XOOM Honeycomb tablet in early spring, but can version 10.1 be installed on it in the meantime?  All of the commercials for the XOOM states that it is compatible with 10.1, but now I'm hearing different information.  I pre-ordered the XOOM tablet, but if it can't support flash until Spring I may cancel my order.

    No, it reads in all other white space, just not at the beginning of the text.  Like if there is whitespace in the middle of the text, it will read that in correctly.  It works fine except with flash player 10.1.

  • Pairing iPad to motorola h350 to hear audio books

    Good morning!
    New IPad2 user here.  Can I pair my iPad to an older version Motorola H350?  I have connected it but no sound comes to the 350. Still sound comes from IPad.  If I can pair it, how?
    Thank you for your help.

    Shuggga-
    Your speaker may be cutting off because you are playing the videos through another monitor, either by wireless or using a video adapter.  I think the iPad designers assumed you would use the other monitor's speakers unless the headset is plugged in.
    If that is not the case, does the speaker work for music?  You could have a loose wire or bad speaker if it never works.

  • Motorola XOOM- Help!

    I'm not sure if this is the correct place to post this, but I really would appreciate help with my brand new XOOM. All I really want to have is the Facebook app and the Words with Friends app, but neither of those are available for me to download in the Marketplace. My kids just got Droid X2s, and they downloaded those apps just fine. However, I can't do it on my XOOM.
    Also, I want to recieve facebook and email notifications on the XOOM. How do I set this up? I configured the Earthlink email account, but am not recieving notifications.
    Thank you!

    I agree with both of you.  No real need but... I do like the facebook app.  It is easier.
    But the website does load and work great too.
    On the otherhand, the facebook apps are also dead useful.
    I can see the app in the marketplace.  Not sure what to tell you.

  • Question about motorola xoom browser

    Hello, i just bought a xoom so im new to this. Every time i try to load a web page that has a lot of content it stops working, so i exit out the of the tab then click on the browser again and there are lines going across the screen where the web page is supposed to be. i type in google and nothing happens so i exit the browser and after doing this several times the web browser finally starts working again. has anyone else had this problem? also while typing this its very laggy, is that normal? im running 3.2 and this is the only tab i have up. Thanks in advance!

    This sounds very strange. Have you had any other issues with the Xoom?  When you bought the device did you do a master reset on it to bring it to its original state?  The reason why ask is because when people buy used devices sometimes they are not in the default state and problems like these arise. I would follow these steps and reset the device, if after you reset the device and it still is having browser issues I would return it to the seller.
    Master Reset
    From the home screen tap Apps
    Tap Settings
    Tap Privacy
    Tap Factory Data Reset
    Displays shows: This will erase all data from your tablets internal storage including; Google account, application data, downloaded applications, Music, photos, other user data
    Tap Reset Tablet to confirm and proceed.

    I'd like it to says something along the lines of:
    "Unfortunately the Apple iPad does not support the Flash player  because their business interests do not want it taking away from their  App revenue.
    Did you know that the Dell Streak, HTC Flyer, Blackberry Playbook,  Motorola Xoom, Samsung Galaxy Tab, Toshiba Thrive, and HP Touchpad all  support the Flash player?"
    My HTML code looks something like this...
    <html>
    <head>
    <title>My Page</title>
    <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=iso-8859-1">
    </head>
    <body bgcolor="#ECECEC" leftmargin="0" topmargin="0" marginwidth="0" marginheight="0">
    <body onresize="setFlashSize()">
    <div id="flashid" style="width:100%; height:100%;">
    <script type="text/javascript" language="JavaScript">
    function setFlashSize(){
    var viewportheight = document.body.clientHeight;
    var viewportwidth = document.body.clientWidth;
    var mydiv = document.getElementById("flashid");
    var styleheight = parseInt(mydiv.style.height);
    var stylewidth = parseInt(mydiv.style.width);
    if (viewportwidth<880){
    document.getElementById("flashid").style.width = 880+"px"; }
    else {
    document.getElementById("flashid").style.width = 100+"%";}
    if (viewportheight<760){
    document.getElementById("flashid").style.height = 760+"px"; }
    else {
    document.getElementById("flashid").style.height = 100+"%";}
    setFlashSize();
    document.write('<object data="index1.swf" width="100%" height="100%" type="application/x-shockwave-flash">');
    document.write('<param name="movie" value="index1.swf" />');
    document.write('<param name="allowScriptAccess" value="always" />');
    document.write('</object>');
    </script>
    <noscript>Javascript must be enabled to view Flash movie</noscript>
    </div>
    </body>
    </html>

    Use swfobject for Flash detection and you can provide all kinds of alternate content... simple text, images, links, .js slideshow, a mov or mp4 video just for the iPhone... ANYTHING this is regular HTML. Your imagination is the only limit.
    And YES, HTML5 is a far cry from replicating Flash... so give them the best of both worlds.
    http://code.google.com/p/swfobject/
    Review this article which deals with Flash and SEO for more ideas:
    If you think that Flash is somehow bad for SEO, it's time to dispell that MYTH!
    If fact, in some circumstances I'll use Flash INSTEAD of just HTML because then I'll have better SEO than with just HTML alone.
    http://www.worldbarefootcenter.com/
    The link to World Barefoot Center in the above post is just one example. View the source code and you see a couple paragraphs of text along with regular HTML links.... but what displays is the Flash version of the image and Flash links.
    The client provided the artwork for the page... and that's what they wanted to use a .jpg image. Well yes, that could be done in HTML but it would be virtually invisible to Google. So Instead I converted the image into a Flash .swf and used swfobject to display the Flash. swfobject allows you to create alternate content inside the <div> which also holds the Flash .swf, then when the page is loaded it detects if the browser has the Flash pluggin. If it does, it displays just the Flash content, if not, it displays the alternate content. Since almost everyone has the Flash pluggin, for most people the Flash version of the <div> will display.
    The alternate content for that <div> can be any regular HTML text, images, media player, links, etc., anything that you would use if you were not using the Flash. Now the best part is that the alternate content can be "over the top" as far as optimizing for SEO, since it will not be seen by most viewers.
    Here's another example of SEO with Flash.. again, the page is just a single image provided by the client:
    http://www.ksowetsuits.com/
    View the source code. The alt content is paragraph after paragraph of information about the site, including lists and links. If it was just the HTML, it might be kind of a boring Home page. But for SEO I can go "over the top" in promoting the site, since most viewers will never see that part... but it's all indexed by search engines. The end result is BETTER SEO using Flash than just HTML.
    On another Web site, a Flash video is displayed, the alt content is the complete text narration of the video. Now how many people would take the time to read that if they could just watch the video instead?? again, better SEO with Flash than without. In fact in one case we had first page search result from that video narration within 4 hours of posting the page.
    On still another site with a Flash video, the alt content is another video, but a .mov version, which will, in effect play Flash video on the iPhone (not possible you say??). Well since the iPhone does not have Flash pluggin, it simply displays the .mov version of the video, while everyione else sees the Flash version.
    So anyway, if Flash is a part of your Web development, you should look into using swfobject and alternate content.
    http://code.google.com/p/swfobject/

  • IPad syncing with iCloud and Exchange = problems ?

    Greetings,
    I am using Apple products since 2 years ago. Everything started with an iPod Touch 64 and things grew to an iPhone4, iPad and now, an iPad 2.
    I also have a Motorola Xoom (Honeycomb 3.2 based), a Samsung Galaxy S2 and a HTC Desire Z with Android 2.3.3.
    All devices are configured to sync mails, calendar, contacts, notes and tasks with an Exchange Server. Until iOS5 and iCloud, there were no problems whatsoever. Contacts created on any device used to replicate to the others without a problem, although the iDevices (iOS based) never understood “categories”, a resource commonly used in an outlook environment to help sorting things out.
    Last week, Ibought the iPad2. Updated it and configured it to use the same Exchange Server as the other devices. Also, I chose to use iCloud.
    After that, I noticed that on a daily basis, contacts would appear without categories, first day, a few, around 5. Second day, 10 more. Third day, more 20. After the second day, I also noticed that the “display as” field (also known as “FiledAs”) was starting to show names with Last, First order. Here in Brazil we sort names as First Last. Of course, outlook, all android devices and also the iPad were all configured correctly (First, Last).
    The problem was getting bigger every day. Yesterday, 900+ of my almost 2000 contact list were mixed up, missing their categories and also had their first and last names changed in the Filed As field.
    After deleting, editing, restoring backups etc. more than once, I have finally found that the iCloud is probably the culprit.
    Changed my iPad config to keep from syncing with iCloud and configured it to backup locally.
    Deleted all accounts in all devices, deleted all data from contacts. Configured the accounts and left the devices syncing. Restored a backup. All devices synced and received the contacts.
    Surprise: problem solved. So far, no missing categories, no inverted First, Last names. Maybe if anyone find himself in the same situation, it might help.

    I have the same problem. My MacPro isn't on Lion, as I have lots of software that isn't compatible yet. But I have 10.7.2. on my MacBookPro and iOS5 on my iPhone and iPad.
    I would like to go to iCloud for those devices that are capable to run it, but I do not want to loose sync services for my MacPro which is on 10.6.8. Will iCloud and MobileMe be in sync until 30.06.2012, so I can use them in parallel, or do I have to wait until all computers are updated to Lion?
