IPad Dvorak Keyboard

Hello all (sorry for the long message; the big discovery is down at the paragraph "The Punchline"),
I learned the Dvorak keyboard a few years ago and have enjoyed the amazing user-friendliness of the layout, and my typing speed now is even faster than it ever was before. (For those of you who haven't heard of the Dvorak keyboard, go here: http://www.dvorak-keyboards.com/Dvorak%20keyboard%20typing%20index.htm )
This means that my *purchasing an iPad* in contingent on iPad having the option of a *Dvorak keyboard layout option built-in* — the way that the Dvorak keyboard layout is built-in to all Macs and PCs. On my iPhone I am used to switching between English, Spanish, Italian and other international keyboards (which you should try if you haven't already for the usfel auto-spell feature in the other languages) so being able to switch between the standard U.S. QWERTY keyboard layout and Dvorak would be beautifully easy for the user and equally intuitive.
Dvorak also invented a version of the keyboard layout for someone who _only has use of the right hand_, and a version for just the _left hand_. Naturally, this would be incredibly useful for new iPad users! Just like we can switch between foreign language keyboards at will on the iPhone and iPad, we should be able to switch between two-handed Dvorak in landscape view and have right-handed (or left-handed Dvorak) in portrait view on the iPad. Wouldn't that be cool? The real crime is not that these layouts don't already exist for the iPad — but that they are only 3rd-party right now (I could program it myself if I had to), and one must jail-break an iPad or iPhone to activate what is built-in on every Mac since the Apple II in 1984.
(One-handed Dvorak layouts: http://www.dvorak-keyboards.com/rightand_left_hand_dvorak_keyboardlayouts.htm )
*The Punchline:* An hour ago, I wanted to check to see if there were right-hand or left-hand Dvorak keyboard layouts in OSX on my Mac burried somewhere in the International Preferences in System Preferences (I hadn't seen in it the past). To my surprise, "International Preferences" in System Preferences is now called "Language and Text" ! (this must be a new update very recently) and right next to the regular Dvorak keyboard layout in the list is "Dvorak - Right" and "Dvorak - Left"! Did anyone else notice this?
My theory is that Apple intends make these right- and left-handed layouts available to iPad users somehow — why else would they just mysteriously show up now? If one has use of both hands, they're not that useful for a regular computer, but on an iPad ...!
Comments? Theories? Ideas? I want an iPad but I won't get one until it has Dvorak — and if it has Dvorak Right and Dvorak Left I'll buy it tomorrow!
- Luke

As noted elsewhere, you can use the Dvorak layout with an external keyboard now, which is very nice. Many of us Dvorakites have written to Apple over the years about this issue since they have always supported Dvorak on Macs.
I do think it's unfortunate and odd that Dvorak is not support for the iPad screen. If this is something you need (as I do) I've found that the app SlideIT (about $3) designed for Android which I'm able to use on a Samsung 7" Galaxy tablet seems to work well in all the applications that I've tested it with.
In addition, SlideIT offers the ability to move you finger around the keyboard (whether querty or Dvorak is active) and built the word up that way. This is a particular nice feature for a tablet. As I recall this technology was first created by IBM and dubbed ATOMIC or something like that. Anyway, it is unique in my experience to be able to combine Dvorak and slide entry and I'm lovin' it!

  • The Dvorak keyboard doesn't work

I set my setting as dvorak but it doesn't work, the keyboard is still normal.

Figuring that it at least won't hurt, I submitted the following feedback at the link below.
Maybe if lots of people ask for this feature, there'll be more chance they'll consider it.
    Here was my request:
    Hi,
I own both an ipad 2 and iPad 1.  Both allow for a hardware keyboard layout of Dvorak, but iOS 5 does not have a software keyboard layout in Dvorak.
The Dvorak layout is a high efficiency keyboard layout that places the most commonly used English vowels and consonants under the touch-typist's home keys and is designed to speed up typing.  This is as opposed to the Qwerty layout which was created to slow down the typist so that manual typewriters would not jam (and how long has it been since you've used a manual typewriter!!:)
I've been using Dvorak for 11 years, so it's really difficult to change back to the inefficient Qwerty layout.
Could I please ask you to consider adding a software Dvorak keyboard layout to the iPad?  It would be a wonderful addition.
Thank you for considering my request,

  • Is there a dvorak keyboard option rather than just a QWERTY keyboard?

So I've been recently trying out the dvorak keyboard settings since i've heard that its faster and easier to type. I wanted to see if the itouch has it but was disappointed to see that it does not. I've also got the 3.0 software and it doesn't have it either. why would Apple not add the dvorak keyboard when they've got so many other keyboards? If they do have it where can i find it?

  • IPad software keyboard overlapping content

My iPad's keyboard has started overlapping content since iOS 6.0.1. It's a consistent, reproducible problem. I've tried several restarts and the same behavior returns.
Here's what's reproducible: if you enter split-keyboard mode, that keyboard will show in random-ish spots on the screen. After returning to full keyboard, the keyboard holds onto where it was last placed on the screen. The only way to return the keyboard to the screen's bottom, is to redo split-keyboard and back again several times.
    Have others seen the problem?
I'm attaching a photo as it tells the best story.

Sure, however it still won’t change the fact that there’s no way to re-position the content. We looked at attempting to do that in other areas of the viewer and it quickly became apparent that it was dangerous to do. Android, on different devices, attempts to move things automatically and inserting ourselves into the mix was filled with pain and bugs.

  • Why does the iPad mini keyboard do erroneous self-correcting keystrokes?

My iPad Mini keyboard replaces regularly two keystrokes. It changes the lower case with upper case on the two punctuation keys (the ", and !" and " and ?" Keys).   I have to correct the inappropriate changes this does to text in emails and other apps as well.  For example, when I introduce a comma "," in a sentence to introduce a clause or series of words, it will change the comma into an exclamation point.  Similarly, when I use three dots to indicate text deleted or ignored, the dots will be changed to three question marks.
This happens when typing in Apple apps and non-Apple apps.  It seems a hardware issue. I never had this with my very first iPad or any of my iPhones. If no one else has reported this going on with their iPad Mini (mine was bought last December so the original model), perhaps it is a defect unique to my iPad Mini.
I have to read over everything typed.  In general there is so much "Apple-determined correction" going on with the Apple keyboard.  This is the most obvious and erroneous.

    reset all settings
    settings-general-reset-reset all settings
    now reconnect to wifi
settings- wifi- click network name- enter password - join
if issue persists back up and restore as new via iTunes

  • Dvorak Keyboard Layout

Is there a Dvorak keyboard layout available for the iPhone?
While I touch type on the standard QWERTY keyboard, I find the Dvorak layout much better suited for typing with my thumbs.
Who do I ask for one if there isn't one now?
    Thanks,
    Byron

    Byron C. Mayes,
You are welcome to suggest it on the feedback page the link for the iPhone is:
    http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphone.html
However, speaking personally, I would think the reasons for the way QWERTY is laid out might be valid on the iPhone. QWERTY is laid out the way it is so that letters that are likely to appear together in English are separated to avoid accidental keystrokes.
    Hope this helps,
    Nathan C.

  • Ipad bluetooth keyboard not working with remote desktop

My clients ipad bluetooth keyboard works any other time, just not when connected to his servers via the remote desktop. PC Windows 7 Servers.
I'm trying to get the keyboard information, but any ideas?

Are you using an app like LogMeIn Ignition to access your servers? I believe that LogMeIn Ignition requires you to tap a little keyboard button near the bottom of the screen to activate use of the keyboard (that's how it works in Splashtop Remote, can't be much different in LogMeIn Ignition.)
Are you sure the app you have supports blue tooth keyboard support with remote desktop? (not sure if they have to, I just recall seeing this in Splashtop patch notes awhile ago.)

  • What. Is the best and lightest iPad 2 keyboard/case?

What is the best and lightest iPad 2 keyboard and case?

    Richard-
The best and easiest is to use the iPad's built-in AirPrint system with an AirPrint-capable printer.  <iOS: AirPrint 101>
If you do not have an AirPrint-capable printer, all printing Apps are a compromise.  I have an HP non-AirPrint printer connected to my WiFi router.  The free HP App, ePrint Home & Biz works OK with photos.
Print n Share and PrintCentral each have their own browser, mail, text and photo programs that work well with the printer, but they can only be accessed from within other programs that have the "Open In" option.  (So far, I think GoodReader is the only App I have with that option.)
You can run a program like Printopia or FingerPrint on your computer that will share its printer as AirPrint over WiFi.  They both are reported to work well.  However your computer must be on and awake any time you want to print.  <Printopia for Macintosh>  <FingerPrint for PC and Mac>

  • IPad 2 & Keyboard Dock Compatibility?

I bought a White iPad 2 on Day 1 (March 11th) and have loved it. I very rarely complain about Apple products so this topic is somewhat out-of-character for me. When I bought iPad 1 in 2010, I bought the Keyboard Dock the same day. I found that I truly used the keyboard dock often and came to enjoy it a lot. Sadly, when I bought iPad 2, I realized it simply was not compatible with my keyboard dock. I understand the iPad 2 is thinner so naturally it wouldn't be compatible, but is there something I'm (hopefully) missing? Is there any kind of dock adapter or work-around to this compatibility issue? I used the keyboard dock so much in my college classes and now for it to just be unusable is honestly a little frustrating. Thanks for any help in advance!

If you think the iPad may break when you drop it or you have broken any device in the past, hard ipad cases are for you because they provide protection against the impact that a fall can cause while keeping the device working well. The ipad 2 keyboard case offers full protection for the entire device and a strap holds the iPad in place.

  • IPad 2 keyboard stops working

I've noticed lately that my iPad 2 keyboard stops working from time to time.  For instance I was on Facebook the other day and instead of the keyboard coming up when I wanted to make comment there was a black bar at the bottom that would only allow me to jump from line to line on various post...but couldn't get the keyboard up to type.  It also happened to me on another website.  It only happens in Safari.  If I shut the iPad off and then back on it clears up the problem.  At first I thought it was just some new FB bull sheet .
    Anyone have any ideas?
    Thanks
    M

update:  I did do a restore, but a restore from backup on my iPad2 for this problem.  I still encounter it once in awhile even after the restore.  If I turn it off with the slider switch and then back on the keyboard works again.
Wondering if some App I downloaded is causing this problem.  Come to think of it...began happening after my Bing App download...but not really sure that it is the culprit.
My options now are to restore to like new setting and then load everything up again to see if that fixes it.
I may venture a quick call to Apple support...but I think they'll say to do the same thing.
    M.

Where is the under score on the iPad 2 Keyboard? I need to use an underscore for a log in ID to a site I go to. I cannot fine an under score on the iPad 2 keyboard.

Go to the Numeric Keyboard. Press the  #+= Key (to the left of Undo).  The Underscore key is there (middle left above the # key).
