IPhone 3G-S: camera pictures grainy and blurry

Just upgraded to the 3G-S from a first generation iPhone. The first generation's 2 megapixel camera took remarkably good pictures - crisp, clear and great color balance. Unfortunately, I'm having bad luck so far with the the camera on the 3G-S. The images are grainy, unfocused and the colors are very washed out. The unit is new, the lens is clean, and this problem has repeated despite many pictures taken in a variety of light conditions. Anyone else having a similar problem and/or found a solution?

Jeff,
I have the exact same experience! I also upgraded from the original iPhone and have found the camera on the 3GS to be a disappointment. Photo's are grainy, the dynamic range is a lot worse, and the overall sharpness is worse. Given the same lighting conditions in my apartment, photos from the iPhone 1st gen allow me to read text on a poster across the room, but with the 3GS you can hardly even tell it's text. Spot focus doesn't help, I've tried playing with the exposure to give the 3GS an advantage, but no dice.
The only situation I've found where the camera is an improvement is for macro photos. For stuff closer than a few feet the 3GS is the clear winner, but overall I'm really disappointed with the photo quality compared to the original.
I'm going to the apple store to compare it to other 3GSs to make sure I didn't get a dud, but I've already compared mine to a coworkers and it was pretty similar. I don't understand why everyone online thinks this camera is such a significant improvement, but my guess is they are just impressed with the tap to focus and macro.

  • HT1933 I pre-ordered an album on my iPhone, the album came out today and now it won't let me downoad it. What do I do?

I pre-ordered Midnight Memories last week and it came out today. When I go to the album on iTunes it says purchased, but when I go to my Music it doesn't show up. I got the email that told me to click the link to download it, so I did and it isn't working. What should I do?

Same thing happened to me. Go to iTunes, then at the bottom of the page click on the account link, sign in to the account that you bought the music from then a box will pop up that asks if you want to download the album.
(I did this from my laptop, not my iPhone.)

  • How do I stop my iPhone 5s from emailing pictures sideways and upside-down?  iOS 7

For the tenth time, I have sent a picture from my Mail application on my iPhone 5s to a supervisor at work and the picture was upside down and backwards.  This is NOT acceptable and it is embarrassing when they make jokes about it.  I refuse to believe that I have to send the picture to my personal email, save it to my computer, fix the picture to rotate it and preview correctly, and attach it from my computer.  The only other discussion on this matter was from 2011 and it obviously has not been fixed yet.  Any solutions aside from getting a different phone?

The iPhone saves its pictures with an orientation setting. Windows software tends to ignore it.

  • My iPhone 4 rear camera is stuck and cannot be focused. How can I fix this easily?

    Hi,
My camera won't focus on anything that is close to the camera which means that it can be frustrating when trying to focus text. The auto-contrast still works however. I'm out of warranty, can they still do this in the Apple store for free? I have read other people saying that it can be done at the genius bar for free, is this the case?
    Many thanks,

Basic troubleshooting from the User's Guide is reset, restart, restore (first from backup then as new).  Has any of this been tried?

  • Our Iphone 4S is full of pictures which transferred to my Ipad through Icloud.  Everytime I delete pictures on my iphone it deletes the pictures on my ipad.  We are using my iphone as a camera.  We are in Croatia and it is hard to find someone to answer

We are in Croatia and are having trouble getting help for our problem.  We have an Ipad and an Iphone 4S.  I have been using the Iphone as a camera.  The icloud has been transferring pictures to the ipad.  Now, my iphone is full of pictures (180) and if I delete a picture, it disappears from my ipad as well.  We need some advice as to how we can save the pictures in the ipad - maybe to another file?  And then be able to delete the pictures from my Iphone without deleting them from the Ipad.  Or, if that is impossible.  What accessories should I look for so that I can download pictures on a device, then delete my pictures from the iphone and start all over again.  Any help is much appreciated.  Thanks from 2 very confused people.

  • Rear Camera taking grainy low-quality pictures -- help?!

I just bought an Iphone 4 3 days ago. I've started using the camera but all of the pictures seem to come out really low quality, grainy and blurry and when I upload them to flickr they have 765 x 1024 resolution. I've seen lots of pictures other people have taken with iphone 4s and they look really sharp and crisp and have much higher resolutions (2592 x 1936). Is there a way to adjust settings? Do I have a defective camera? Here is a link to the pictures I have taken with the rear camera: http://www.flickr.com/photos/scmarvelli/

Have you taken the protective film off the back?
There is no adjustment regarding the size of the photo. How are you getting them off the phone? If you drag them off using Camera/Scanner Wizard they will be full res

  • Iphone 5 camera is grainy

I just realized that the camera on my iPhone 5 is taking really horrible pictures.  I kept thinking it was the lighting I was in, but after shooting pics in different lighting, they are all very grainy and blurry.  I tried cleaning the lense and taking my case off and I still get bad pictures.  Just for the fun of it, I took my old iPhone 3g and took some pictures to compare.  It was doing a much better job.  I also tested my 5 against my boss' 4s and his blew it out of the water.  Is there an issue that I'm not aware of?  Did an update mess up my camera?  My phone is about 6 months old and it seemed to take good pictures before.  I am partly asking this because my brother has the same problem with his brand new 5c.  He bought it to replace an S3 and he is very disappointed with the 5c's camera.  I was the one that talked him into switching to Apple.  Please help.  Thanks.

    Hello WillNoHo
Check out the quoted section below to troubleshoot issues with your camera on your iPhone. There are other options within the article if it does not resolve the issue for you.

Camera isn't functioning or has undesired image quality
If the screen shows a closed lens or black image, force quit the Camera app.
If you do not see the Camera app on the Home screen, try searching for it in Spotlight. If the camera does not show up in the search, check to make sure that Restrictions are not turned on by tappingSettings > General > Restrictions.
Ensure the camera lens is clean and free from any obstructions. Use a microfiber polishing cloth to clean the lens.
Cases can interfere with the camera and the flash. Try gently cleaning the lens with a clean dry cloth or removing the case if you see image or color-quality issues with photos.
Try turning iPhone off and then back on.
Tap to focus the camera on the subject. The image may pulse or briefly go in and out of focus as it adjusts.
Try to remain steady while focusing:
Still images: Remain steady while taking the picture. If you move too far in any direction, the camera automatically refocuses to the center.
Note: If you take a picture with iPhone turned sideways, it is automatically saved in landscape orientation.
Video: Adjust focus before you begin recording. You can also tap to readjust focus while recording. Exiting the Camera application while recording will stop recording and will save the video to the Camera Roll.
Note: Video-recording features are not available on original iPhone or iPhone 3G.
If your iPhone has a front and rear camera, try switching between them to verify if the issue persists on both.
    Regards,
    -Norm G.

  • ITouch 4g camera is fuzzier and does worse with sources of light than other 4g's

Here are some photos taken with my iPod touch 4G. I was hanging out with some friends last night and they took photos and videos that weren't nearly as grainy and blurry. What's wrong? In situations that were just as dark or darker, the videos and photos turned out clearer and less blurry. They were still visibly low res, but they were at least presentable for showing friends or posting on social networks. I've even seen ipod touch 4g video reviews with better photos.

With less that optimum light, the still photos taken by the 4G iPod are poor, like the ones yuo posted. The 4G does not have good camera.
    You can
    Try:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
    - Restore from backup. See:
    iOS: How to back up
    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.
    -  Make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store.

How to take better photos on the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic
One of the interesting points brought out in my mention of the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic in my feature on phone camera apertures and sensor sizes was that the 5800's camera was distinctly under-sized compared to the likes of Nokia's awesome N95 and N82:
Quite a difference, but the presence of Carl Zeiss optics and the raw 3 megapixel resolution does leave some room for optimism. Yes, the camera on the 5800 XpressMusic isn't as good in all light conditions as the N82, for example, but as long as there's enough light then there's no reason not to still take some stunning photographs of your friends and the world around you.
And so taking photos on the device. As you might expect, my tips are largely as they'd be for any other camera-toting smartphone, with just a few tweaks:
The easiest way to start the Camera application is to press and hold the camera shutter key. Because Camera is kept loaded in memory on the 5800, it should appear almost instantaneously, ready for action. (Note that if you haven't used your 5800 for a minute or so previously, you may need to flick the keylock switch first)
Don't worry too much about dust on the camera lens, a brief wipe on a soft cloth is all that's needed to get rid of any finger grease - if you get too zealous about cleaning the glass, you'll end up with hundreds of micro-scratches. These won't affect photos too much, but they will look ugly.
Don't worry about changing 'scene mode' or other settings, most of them don't make any difference.
As mentioned above, know that the 5800 XpressMusic's camera is on the small side, physically, so you'll need to have lots of light around to register on the small sensor. Sunlight is best, of course, but there are still wide variations in light levels on overcast days. Low light means potentially 'noisy' photos. And focussing won't be as accurate. Shooting snaps indoors will often produce disappointing results, but you may be able to help by hitting that big, thumb-friendly flash icon and setting flash to 'on'. This is called fill-in flash and for subjects a metre or so away in indistinct indoor lighting, can make a difference.
The usual photo-taking tips apply, as with any camera phone: try to brace yourself when taking a photo, so that the device doesn't shake; wait a fraction of a second after the shutter sound before moving the phone down; think about the source of light and try to have it in the arc behind you if possible; for important static shots, take more than one, just in case - one may be sharper, better focussed or more shake-free.
By default, geotagging of your photos is turned OFF. If you think you'll be wanting to place your photos on a map later on (e.g. on Flickr or Share on Ovi) then go into 'Options - Settings' and turn 'Show GPS info' on. As usual with GPS, be aware that getting a position fix may take a minute or so if you've moved a long way from the last time you used the phone's GPS. And it won't work indoors unless you're close to a big window and feely lucky... The geotagging algorithms do allow a certain time leeway, i.e. they'll accept a previous position fix provided it wasn't too long ago.
Tapping on the envelope icon is the shortcut to use to fire your photo up to the world immediately - but that's another tutorial for another day!

My camera just recently went blurry. It was working just fine yesterday but then I went to use it today and the pictures are so fuzzy. Has anyone else had this problem with their iPhone 5?

1st... make sure nothing's covering/smudging the camera lens.  then...
    Standard troubleshooting...
Try a reset by pressing the home and sleep buttons until you see the Apple logo, ignoring the slider. Takes about 5-15 secs of button holding and you won't lose any data or settings.
Remove the Camera app from Recently Used list...
    - From any Home Screen, double tap the home button to bring up the Recents List
    - Tap and hold any icon in this list until they wiggle
    - Press the red to delete the Camera app from this list.
    - Press the home button twice when done.
    - Restart the Camera app
If still a problem restore with your backup.
If still a problem restore as new, i.e. without your backup. See how it runs with nothing synced to it.
If still a problem, it's likely a hardware issue.
