IPhone 3GS is acting wonky

I have had my 3GS for about 3 months so far and have just recently had a wonky problem begin.
Every so often my phone will think that I'm touching it in the upper right-hand corner. This is very annoying when I'm in the middle of an app. When it does this it goes nuts.
I'm trying to see if there is a fix for this. Whenever it happens, I have to turn it off and turn it back on ... and sometimes that doesn't work either.

I have tried restarting, but eventually it goes wonky. I have tried resetting, but it goes wonky. I have tried to restore and now it's locked on the screen that tells me to hook it up to itunes. All I can do for now is wait for the battery to drain and start over.
This is very frustrating.

    Try:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
    - Restore from backup
    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.
    - Make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store.

  • My iPhone 3GS is acting crazy.

It started with my iPhone freezing up all of the time, and then apps started crashing. Sometimes I would have to turn it off to get it back working, but when I turned it on all of my contacts would be gone and then show back up after a few minutes. Now, I look over at my phone and it's got that little circle loading thing on the screen and it keeps making the beeping noise (the one when you hook it up to charge) every few seconds. I restarted it and the apple screen just stayed on it forever, so I did it again. Finally it came back up, with all of my contacts gone, frozen on the battery screen. Everything is back to normal now.
Any idea on what is going on with my phone? My upgrade isn't until December so my phone has GOT to last me until then!

Basics from the manual are restart, reset, restore from backup, restore as new.  Try each step in succession until your problem is solved.

  • IPhone 3GS acting strange

I have an iPhone 3GS and several things have been happening. When typing the clicking sound randomly turns on and off. Also I can not turn the iPhone off. When I try, it just restarts. Also it will say something like this charging device is not compatible with this accessory yet nothing is attached to the phone! Sometimes when typing the keys don't keep up with me.
Also, I do not receive sound when a text message is received. I cannot adjust the volume with the buttons on the side of the phone. The ringer box comes up but nothing happens when I press the buttons on the side of the phone.
I have noticed that the iPhone does freeze from time to time or unexpectingly end an app. I did upgrade to iOS 5. I'm not sure what is going on. Please help. I've checked my settings and everything seems normal. All these problems just happened in one day!

Can you please think back to whether the issues started as soon as you upgraded to iOS 5?
I just updated my 3GS to iOS 5 and have experienced some of the problems you mentioned.
-my volume buttons no longer work
    -no unoock sound
    -no lock sound
    -no sound from videos
    -no keypad clicks
The problems ALL started as soon as I upgraded to iOS 5. I started a thread on it, see the link below:

Log in to the Developer forum. You will find instructions on how to install the lastest beta. Your problem is the beta you have installed has expired. All of them did on October 5; you will find hundreds of threads discussing this. If you have a beta it is assumed that you will continue as a beta tester, so a simple update using iTunes will not work.
If you no longer want to be a beta tester install the GM 7.0.2 by restoring from iTunes using DFU mode.

  • IPhone 3Gs and Mobile Me not updating Issues

I have an iPhone 3Gs and a mobile me account, everything was working well and if I entered info in my Calender or contacts either on the iPhone or my G5 Tower at home then they would sync up and merge so that the same dates or addresses were in both places.
Since updating the iphone to 4.0.1 I have had issues with date and contact merging.
If I add an entry in the calender it appear in my mobile me web calender when sync'ed, but does not transfer to the iPhone. I have checked that on the G5 the calender date book is the iPhones date book. I have checked that Calenders and Contacts are on the mobile me web. but they are not filtering down to the iPhone.
If I add a date to the calender on the iPhone they are not hitting the G5 tower.
This was never a problem prior to the phone software update. I have shut the phone down fully and restarted it incase that was an issue. I have also checked the phones Settings
Settings> Mail, Contact, Calenders and Fetch is set to Push every 30 Mins
    Push > Set to On
Advanced schedule> Push (Have also tried Fetch as well)
    and
    Settings>for my .Mac email> Mobile Me >
    Mail> On
    Contacts> On
    Calenders On
    BookMarks> On
    Notes>On
    and
    Settings>Calender
    New Invitations Alers > On
    Sync> All Events
    Time Zone Support> On
Is anyone able to to suggest how I can cure this issue

I am having the same issue (actually only noticing on phone Mail, haven't checked calendar yet). And this is an iPhone 3GS without the 4.01 update. Been noticing this for a couple of weeks at least. I'll even hit refresh in Mail and it acts like it's trying, but old emails remain (that I trashed at work) and new ones I saw at work iMac are not shown. They eventually update, but not like they should, especially after I have told the phone to refresh. Not the behavior I've known and loved for years.

  • Using HDTV as monitor for iPhone 3GS?

    Hello everyone,
I've heard of mirroring the newer iPhones and iPads using Apple TV and AirPlay however I am still that guy with an iPhone 3GS. I was wondering if there was anyway of using my HDTV (HDMI or Streaming) to simply act as a larger screen for when I am writing on my iPhone? Or if anyone knows of a text editing app that streams itself as a video feed so I can see what I'm doing! Either one would be great!

It's a pity that by now they hadn't added a HDMI port so you could send video & audio through one cable to a HDTV, a lot of strange decisions going on at Apple. Glad Steve Jobs is back maybe he will sort these anomalies out.
What anomalies? DisplayPort is a newer standard than HDMI. It's also royalty-free, which was likely a business driver for the decision.
As a pro user the current MBPs are unusable to me having no analogue video out,
"Pros" should probably be using digital equipment. I agree about the ExpressCard to SD switch - bad idea, IMO. But analog is going the way of the dodo. Apple does offer a mini-DP to VGA. The audio ports do analog as well as digital. That's pretty on track, I think. Why do you think Apple should support older technologies? What's next? Should we say Apple really needs to make a mini-DisplayPort-to-Rabbit-Ear-Antenna adapter?

  • Itunes 10.1 Freezes when i connect my 32GB iPhone 3GS

Ever Since i updated my iTunes this morning it freezes when i connect the phone. When i unplug it it comes back. There are times that when i re plug it after a bit it works. My phone was acting up so I decided to restore it. But then i get the same problem again so i couldn't restore from back up. I been trying to figure out the solution to this problem since 7 AM in the morning EST. I been looking around the forums for similar problems but it didn't help. I followed steps from apple on this page: http://www.apple.com/support/iphone/assistant/itunes/#section_7
That didn't help either. I been repeating all these steps plus more multiple times and nothing solved it. It just keeps freezing. I even Called out of work today just trying to Fix this dumb issue cause i can't be with out my phone PLEASE HELP!!

I'm not sure what's causing this, but it has just started happening to me too. It has been happening with both my iPhone 4 and my wife's iPhone 3GS, but more with the 3GS.
I thought rebooting the machine had fixed the problem, but it happened again this morning.
A workaround that has worked successfully for me is this:
With iTunes not running, plug in the phone. iTunes should then start on its own and start syncing properly. If it doesn't start automatically, start it manually (with the phone already plugged in) and the sync should start. But starting it first and then plugging in the phone doesn't seem to work.
    I'm running iTunes 10.1.2.17.
    Edit:
Okay, I think I just got lucky with the suggestion above to plug in the phone with iTunes not running. That's not working for me anymore. What does work pretty consistently (though not always) it starting or restarting iTunes manually after the plug has already been plugged in. This may mean killing it from the task manager if it's frozen, or waiting for the freezing to wear off (which it does eventually, even though it never recognizes the device or starts a sync).

  • Updating iphone 3gs to ios 5, is it safe or will i have issues?

I've been weary about updating my iphone 3gs from ios 4 (4.3.5 to be exact) to the new ios 5.  I didn't have a problem sitting on an older update untill my phone started acting up and the only thing to do to fix it is to do a restore.  itunes is forcing me to update in order to restore (didn't used to do that untill the new itunes update came out a while back...makes me angry) therefore causing a bit of concern with me.  I do recall how the 3G acted when the ios 4 came out, and my worry is will the iphone 3Gs do something simmilar or worse.  What are the experiances you guys have had with it, both good and bad, I'm curious.  Also is it a good idea to update the 3gs to the ios 5 or not.

Hi I updated my 3 gs without any problem a d it works fine my wife now has it since I got my 4S

  • IPhone 3GS Won't turn on after trying to install OS 4.1, HELP!

So i updated iTunes to the newest version earlier and then plugged in my iphone 3gs and downloaded the newest OS, 4.1 i think, it downloaded fine and then started to install then came up with an error on itunes and then the iphone turned off or something and wont turn back on, ive tried to charge it and leave it and its not working, help me please :S

P.S. I just noticed; when I hold the power and home button at the same time while it's plugged in as if I was going to restart it, my computer acts as if I'd plugged it in again (it makes the USB notification sound, itunes opens up again, I get the same "your iphone is in recovery mode" message, etc.), but that's the only response I've been able to get from pressing anything on the iphone. thanks again.

  • HT4061 I have an iphone 3gs - the new ios 6.1 (?) upgrade has inabled my phone. I get a white apple on the screen. can't reset phone - doesn't work. what can I do besides take phone into Apple?

I have an iphone 3gs - yes, an older iphone.
This morning apple had a msg that asked if I wanted to upgrade to the new ios 6.1 (?).  I said yes.  Now I can't use my phone.  I've tried hitting the power and other buttons.  I get a white apple on the screen. can't reset phone - doesn't work. what can I do besides take phone into Apple?  This *****!  I realize (now from reading internet) that my phone/system may be uncompatible.  Help!

I have a 3GS (a true classic design!) and have upgraded it to 6.1 today.  The process did not go without a glitch - it took a few attempts to get the app's to sync but after detecting the ones causing an issue and deleting them it works - so far!  I have had issues about 50% of the numerous times a new OS is uploaded to this phone and always take the new OS with trepidation.  But at least you know there is a 3GS with 6.1 working OK.
I suggest you do a fresh restart to the phone several times - without it being connected to the computer - to see if it gets its act together and starts.  I think it will.  Hold down the top 'power' button and front round control button until it shuts down - goes blank and dead.  Then press the top power button to re-activate - reboot - it.
If that does not work then plug into your itunes computer, navigate in iTunes to see your iPhone and hopefully you will be able to sync it or at least 'restore iPhone' from the 'summary' tab.
If you can not get onto the iphone perhaps you will still be able to sync if in iTunes by going - 'file' - 'devices' - 'sync iphone' or failing that try transfer purchases' and ultimately 'restore from back-up'.
I had technical problems with my old 3GS (suffered a failed wireless antenna) so I took it to an Apple Store and they issued me with a service-replacement/reconditioned phone for a very modest charge.  So if worst come to the worst get a new phone that way!

  • Iphone 3GS has "169..." IP address after replacing old Airport Express

My 3GS is no longer connecting to my home network after replacing my old airport express.
Previously my old G5 iMac would have problems connecting to the old airport express, BUT my iPhone 3GS would reliably connect.
After installing this new airport express, my iMac is on the network, but NOW my iPhone 3GS is experiencing the same problem my iMac previously had: IP address changed to 169.254.205.191
Airport Express is set to WPA2 Personal
Updated firmware on the Airport express
Network settings on iphone have been reset several times.
Airport express has been rebooted several times.
    Please help. Thank you.

Thnx William but that is not the case coz all other devices(laptops, desktops, PS3...etc) r working just fine.
after alot of time trying to figure out what the problem is I figured out the problem but cant seem to sove it:
I have three router in my network one acts as a DHCP server (router 1) and the others act as AP, they all brodcast wirless (SSID) based on the internet connection coming from router 1, all devices including my old iphone 3g connect on all three router no problem and get assigned an ip address within range 192.168.1.~, however when i connect my 3gs to router 1 (DHCP) it works perfectly and connects to the internet but when I connect to any of the other routers I cannot have internet access and it takes a long time to show the wi-fi symbol (3 bars), I managed to overcome this by giving my second router another network IP i.e 192.168.2.~ and made it aother DHCP server (but another network) that way my 3gs connected just fine like the 1st router, the problem with this solution is that I am on two seperate networks but same internet feed so I cannot communicate between lapto, desktop, PS3...etc
I guess I have two options:
1- wait for an update for 3gs hoping this could be solved and keep my network as is.
2- assign three different networks just for 3gs to work and sacrifice my whole home sharing.
SOOOO Pleaseeeeee if anything know anything or could help me in anyway please and post, is it just me or have i heared alot of Wi-Fi problems with 3gs!!!

  • "jittery" iPod volume slider in iPhone 3gs

    Hi
I bought my iPhone 3gs a couple of months ago.
I love all the great features it has and I can honestly say my life has become much simpler with this product
However, I have a minor concern.
Just sometimes, when I am listening to music on my iPhone, the volume slider acts all funny.
By acting funny meaning the little circle slider gets all jittery and I can't control the volume. It acts all strange and messed up.
Thankfully I can "reset" the iPod part.
But it gets really annoying to do that everytime it happens.
I have the latest software update installed, and I still have this problem.
Does anyone else have this strange bug?
Hopefully Apple can listen to my minor concern.
    Thank you for reading.

I have the same problem on my iphone the volume slider desappears or hide off when its not conected at the dock. The thing is that I can make a calls with not problem and I can hear the ring but if my iphone its not in the dock I can not play music either videos. Its the only way to fix it.. doing a restore and update ??? because if I do that my phone it's gonna get blocked. and also a message appears ( this accessory is not made for this iphone ......swich a airplane mode blablabla..) I dont know if it's the same problem?
    please someone help me
    thanks

  • Iphone 3GS 3.1.2 Battery drain problem

    Hi,
Recently i have purchased Iphone 3gs with software 3.1.2. I'm facing a serious problem of battery drain. Without doing anything, the battery drains so fast. Is there is any way to over come this problem?

Here's what I do that usually keeps battery life accurate. Drain the battery till it's dead, charge up full and do a hard reset while it's still plugged in and it usually works. If this fixes it just keep killing the battery and charging it full. If it acts up repeat steps above. Mine works almost everytime when it starts acting up. I was just trying things and this worked. Hope this helps

  • IPhone 3GS cannot connect to iTunes app

I got the Mountain Lion installed on my MacBook and now I cannot connect my iPhone 3GS to it, and when I try the iPad it does not work either... I tried to reset the settings on the phone, but since the iCloud was acting very weird I never used it properly and the wire connection does not work - therefore I cannot use my phone now. Can you please help me somehow??
    Thank you!

Check the iPhone discussion and you will find dizens of identical posts to this. The most common suggestions are
    Reaset the date
    Settings > General > Date & Time
    Turn "Set Automatically" OFF
Set Date & Time to the year 2013
    Relaunch Passbook
When you have done this and downloaded the apps to back to Settings > General > Date & Time > Set Automatically to ON.
    Try using Cellular connection
    Settings > General > Cellular
Use Cellular Data for... iTunes ON
Use Cellular Data for.. Passbook Updates ON
Wait until Apple gets things sorted out on the App Store or the unexpectedly heavy load abates
Neither of the first two options worked for me so I am waiting somewhat impatiently for Apple to sort it out.
