IPhone 3Gs stuck in restore mode.  Unknown error 1015

Error: "iPhone could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (1015)".
I'm in Tanzania and was trying to jail break my phone with one of those online download programs that say they can break any iPhone. 100% guaranteed! Well, my phone is now locked up in 'need of restore' through iTunes. BUT, it won't restore. The error 1015 keeps returning at the end of the restore process. I'm up to date on iTunes and iPhone software. Can anyone help me? I'm stuck here in Africa with an 11 hour time shift from Apple tech support.

1015 error: There are 4 possible causes of this error:
The activation server truly is unavailable. Rare, usually fixed within minutes.
Your antivirus or firewall or router's firewall is blocking access to
gs.apple.com on ports 80 and 443.
Your iPhone is jailbroken or otherwise hacked.
The computer you connected to during the restore/update was
used to hack/jailbreak some other iOS device, and its
network database was corrupted during the process.

  • Iphone 3GS stuck in restore mode...PLEASE HELP!!

Yesterday my microphone stopped working on my phone. I called tech support. They told me to run a restore on my phone (which I had thought I had done but didn't). They told me I would have to pay $200 to replace the phone since I am 30 days outside of my warrenty. Needless to say, when I got home from work, I figured out I didn't do the restore (I'm not the most tech savy person out there).
I have a 16G 3GS and it has been in restore mode for about 6 1/2 hours now with no progress. I do not know what to do! Nothing is happening. I use a PC with Window's Vista and have ISO 4.3.3 installed on my phone. The silver apple with unmoving progress bar are on my phone. I've tried a few fixes I've found and could understand on here with no success (ie. trying to get the computer to access the phone to jump start the process again). I don't know what else to do! I know I don't want to unplug the phone from the computer. Is there a way to stop the restore process and just reinstall the phone to the previous sync with out completing the restore? I have not gotten any error messages.
Any help in laymens terms would be much appriciated!

If this happens to anyone...follow the steps in the above article. If the phone freezes in the restore mode again follow the steps again BUT unplug the USB from the phone, then the computer and use a different USB plug on the computer. About 20 minutes later, phone is restored, synced back to my last sync and my microphone works! Only 8 hours in total but at least its for something!

  • I have an Iphone 3Gs stuck in restore mode after full restore?

Hello, I was trying to restore my Iphone 3Gs to 4.3.2 firmware. I got it all restored then the message on itunes popped up saying the phone would reboot and not to unplug it. Well I didnt and after the messaged left about three seconds later itunes popped up and said a phone has been detected to be restored. I have been through this process five times already. • TS3694 iphone could not be restored. an unknown error 1015 has occured.. what to do now??

My iphone could not be restored. it shows that an unknown error has occured (1015). How to restore my iphone from a recovery mode?

If you're getting an error 1015 then either it's jailbroken or the computer you're using was used to jailbreak or attempt to jailbreak an iOS device.
If you are NOT getting error 1015, then you are NOT having the "exact same problem".

Error 1015 might happen after making unauthorized modifications to iOS, also called "jailbreaking."

  • IPhone 4s stuck in restore mode. Error (-1)

I saw a few hours ago that my iPhone doesn't play any sounds over the speakers. I tried to switch it off and on again but it didn't work. Then i tried to restore it with iTunes. While it was restoring my iPhone it also loaded iOS 5.0.1. After some minutes an error occured (-1) and the restore stopped. Now my iPhone always says that U have to connect to iTunes and then wants to do a restore. I'm now stuck in an endless loop and can't get the iPhone out of it.
Did somebody have the same problem or does somebody know a solution?
    I'd be really thankful.

Unfortunately the restore did not solve the connectivity problem, but it made it even worse. The phone was not connecting to the carrier at all, constantly showing "Searching...". I tried another restore, this time it failed on three different computers (one of them was a fresh iTunes installation)... Strange, that it worked once.
@Unshaven: Multiple combinations of Power and Home button did not work either. Seems to be bricked now. I think I have to return it to Apple ...
Btw. Windows iTunes showes some log errors like 'getenv radio-error' failed and DoesDriverNameMatchDeviceID failed.
Any ideas welcome also regarding the issue of loosing connectivity to the carrier...

I have tried to hold the "home" and "power" button to reboot
I have tried powering it off
I have tried, to unplug the cable, hold the "home" button and then plug it in.
Can't check the SN or warranty, cause it is stuck in restore mode.
Is the hard drive gone? Should there be something replaced.

This may indicate a hardware issue with your device. Follow Troubleshooting security software issues, and restore your device on a different known-good computer. If the errors persist on another computer, the device may need service.
Usually this is caused by your antivirus or firewall blocking iTunes access to the Internet. It can also occur if the phone is jailbroken or if the computer you are using was ever used to jailbreak an iDevice.

  • The iphone could not be restored. an unknown error occurred 1015

    Hello everyone,
After upgrading to ios 4, my iPhone 3GS is stuck recovery and I am asked to restore it. However the operation cannot complete since at the end I get an error message that " the iphone could not be restored. an unknown error occurred 1015". What should I do? I am not close to any apple store and I cannot go there? Also, does the warranty allows me to get this fixed?
    Thanks in advance

So that means that there is no way this thing can get fixed? How about degrading the ios 4.3 to 4.2? Is there any legal way to do that? Any comment/help is appreciated
P.S: I was thinking about jail breaking it since it is the only way that Google is suggesting. Would that be a better approach since I am tired of living with out a phone?

  • "the iphone could not be restored an unknown error occurred (2)"

Yesterday I connected my iPhone 4 to my Windows 7 laptop, and went through to install the latest security update for iPhone through iTunes. When it was installing the software update, the phone froaze, and then this happened:"the iphone could not be restored an unknown error occurred (2)"
Now, I have uninstalled and reinstalled both Bonjour and iTunes, to no avail. I have done the iPhone reboot method, and the phone will be identified as "iPhone" but not recognised as mine. iTunes states this phone is in recovery mode and I have tried numerous times to restore it.
Windows doesn't detect the phone while this is happening. It will not restore and the error is still popping up. I have followed as many threads to rectify this but nothing seems to be working.
I can resore it on my iMac but the reset date for the iPhone on this computer is six months old.
    Any suggestions?

When you say you uninstalled iTunes and reinstalled it, did you follow the directions in this Apple support document exactly? http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1923
That will make a difference on Windows computers. After that, try and reconnect and restore.

  • The Iphone could not be restored. An unknown error occurred(1604)

I'm trying to restore my iphone as my iphone suddenly stopped working.I just see silver colour apple symbol when i switch on then it displays usb to itues symbol. thats all..
so when i trying to restore the iphone i get the below message.
The Iphone could not be restored. An unknown error occurred(1604)
i have tried from diffrent computer but i still get the same error.
    can someone help...please...thanks

Try the following, which worked for someone else:
Disconnected all other USB items (ext. hard drives)
    Disabled Symantec Anti Virus
Reset the iPhone to get the screen with the lead pointing to iTunes (Hold down lock button on top)
Plug iPhone in when this image of Lead/iTunes showing
    Start iTunes
iTunes recognised iPhone in Recovery mode, offered to restore
Clicked Restore, it unpacked then tried to run
iPhone flashed then went to black screen, eventually iTunes gave the dreaded 1604 error.
I then unplugged iPhone, but instead of resetting it again (which I've tried about 20 times already), I left it with black screen (although black, screen is definately on as not totally pitch black).
    Shut down iTunes
Plugged phone back in (Still with black screen)
Started iTunes, again noticed recovery mode, pressed Recover
The black screen then popped in to life and had a small recovery icon at the bottom in the middle and the restore worked perfectly!!!

  • I have an apple 3g, tried to update it to 4.2, but it wasnt successful, then they asked me to restore it .. to which im getting an error message of "the iphone could not be restored an unknown error has occured (error 1015), any solutions?

i have an apple 3g, tried to upgrade it to a 4.2 version, (previously it was 4.1). it wasnt successful, the computer asked us to restore it to the version which was last operational, and while restoring an error message appeared "the iphone could not be restored, an unknown error occured

"This error is caused by attempts to downgrade the iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch's software. This can occur when you attempt to restore using an older .ipsw file. Downgrading to a previous version is not supported. To resolve this issue, attempt to restore with the latest iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch software available from Apple."

Plug your iPhone into iTunes and update it to the latest supported version, which is 4.2.1.

  • My iphone is stuck in restore mode.  I plugged into macbook and ran a restore and it is still stuck

iphone is stuck in restore mode when i did a rebook.  I hooked up to my macbook and ran a restore.   Itunes ran through the restore and now it is still stuck in restore mode.

If it won't restore in the regular restore mode, you may want to try putting it in DFU mode if you haven't already. Instructions for this are linked below.
    http://www.iclarified.com/entry/index.php?enid=1034
Put it in this mode, then do a restore again through your computer.
    Hope this helps you out!
