Iphoto 09 does not recognize .jpg images?????

Recently updated to 10.5.6 + iLife 09 +iWork 09 (box set). First time trying to add pictures to iPhoto 09 I get the following message...
"Unreadable Files: 20
The following file could not be imported. (The file is in an unrecognized format)"
These files are .jpg, loaded from a Kodak camera to local drive using Image capture (so I can embed camera icc). The Finder reports the file as a jpg, and Photoshop reports file to be a jpg. Preview will open them without a problem. So what's up with iPhoto???
Michael

Larry, first thanks for trying to help...
Where... ~/Pictures/Acquired from Camera. A folder I made just for this purpose, and have been using for "years."
The profile I am using (have been for years) is "KODAK Generic DCS Camera Input."
The initial test of saving from Preview did not work, however, a second test where I used Preview's "Assign Profile" to change the profile to sRGB, did allow the picture to be imported into iPhoto. (small yeah)
So I guess this means that iPhoto '09 does not like the default Kodak Camera profile.
I would love to close this thread, and call it solved, but I'm more inclined to call this a bug in '09. So much for Color Management. See, I really got better color by doing this, than if I imported the pictures straight from the camera to iPhoto. Would I really go thru the extra steps if it wasn't necessary?
Thanks,
Michael

  • Elements 12 editor does not recognize .jpg

My Elements 12 image editor will not open a jpeg.  It will open a tiff and other files but not a file ending in .jpg.
For many years I have used Elements to open my iPhoto images and edit them. I used to use Elements 3, then Elements 6, and finally Elements 12.  Elements 12 worked fine up until last night when I could not make it open any iPhoto jpegs.  I have Elements 12 selected in my iPhoto Advanced Prefs to be the app to edit my iPhoto images.  It worked fine up until yesterday when it no longer would open an image.
I soon discovered my Elements 12 will not open any jpeg even if I were to drag an image from my desktop to the editor.  Some times I see a pop up note saying that my Elements 12  does not recognize a file ending with .jpg
If I double click several times on Edit in my iPhoto, Photo Ninja will open the image and tell me that Photo Ninja will now edit the image.
    Any help will be appreciated.

  • IPhoto 05  does not recognize my camera

Installed iLife 05 last spring. Dug out my SONY Mavica CD300 camera this winter and 05 does not recognize it. The previous version (03, I think--came with computer) did recognize it. SONY support was no help; they suggested Image Capture, which didn't recognize it either. Now what should I try?

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
You could try to rule out a hardware problem with the camera's USB port, USB cable, or your Mac's USB port. Open your System Profiler (Applications > Utilities > System Profiler) and see if the camera is listed under Hardware > USB. If the camera shows up there, a hardware problem is unlikely. If it does not list there, try a different USB cable, different port on the Mac, or try the camera in another computer.

  • IPhoto '09 does not recognize my library

    Hello from Spain,
Recently I installed iPhoto '09 and everything seemed to work fine. I actualized my library to be able to use faces and places.
Suddenly iPhoto crashed and could not be reopened again. So I reinstalled iPhoto and now I have the problem that it does not recognize my library anymore saying that this current version of iPhoto (8.0) cannot read the library due to a modification done by a newer version.
Did anyone have this kind of problem and can help me out please.
    Thx

the problem is not the application but the library - launch iPhoto while depressing the option (alt) and command (apple) keys and rebuild the library
If that does not work download iPhoto Library Manager - http://www.fatcatsoftware.com/iplm/ - and use its rebuild function which will create a new, rebuild library - if it does not do what you need the original library remains untouched for father work

  • IPhoto 5 does NOT RECOGNIZE new SONY Cybershot...

    Hi.
Purchased new Sony Cybershot recently... using same memory card from previous Sony.
My issue: iPhoto 5 does not recongnize the new camera.
My usual protocol for importing photos to iPhoto --> file --> add to library -->select camera icon from browser --> highlight photos from disc folder
My camera is recognized by the Mac and I see it on the desktop. I'm able to copy files from the camera folder into iPhoto using cut and paste, but it's a bit slower and sort of a pain in the ***.
Is there a setting in iPhoto which will allow the application to see my camera and show it as an option during "add to library"?
    Thanks.

Try trash the com.apple.iPhoto.plist file from the HD/Users/ Your Name / library / preferences folder. (Remember you'll need to reset your User options afterwards. These include minor settings like the window colour and so on. Note: If you've moved your library you'll need to point iPhoto at it again.)
    *What's the plist file?*
For new users: Every application on your Mac has an accompanying plist file. It records certain User choices. For instance, in your favourite Word Processor it remembers your choice of Default Font, on your Web Browser is remembers things like your choice of Home Page. It even recalls what windows you had open last if your app allows you to pick up from where you left off last. The iPhoto plist file remembers things like the location of the Library, your choice of background colour, whether you are running a Referenced or Managed Library, what preferences you have for autosplitting events and so on. Trashing the plist file forces the app to generate a new one on the next launch, and this restores things to the Factory Defaults. Hence, if you've changed any of these things you'll need to reset them. If you haven't, then no bother. Trashing the plist file is Mac troubleshooting 101.

  • Iphoto does not recognize .jpg format

Any advice on why iphoto will not recognize a format that it has in the past

    As a Test:
Hold down the option (or alt) key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Create Library'
Import a few pics into this new, blank library. Is the Problem repeated there?
    Post back with the result.

  • Import does not recognize old image files that have no extension

Just discovered that the import facility does not see (or accept) old Mac image files that have no extension -- even if these files have a Mac "kind" that is an image such as "Adobe Photoshop file".
You can manually add an extension to the file (and respond to an "are you sure?" dialog). Then the file will be seen and accepted.
This is extremely dangerous (and painful to manually correct) since you think you are seeing all images in the import box, but you are not.
In fact, I deleted huge image directories after having satisfactorally (I thought) imported them into Aperture many months ago. Most of the old extension-less files had been updated and did have extensions in later versions. However, I missed one important image and looked everywhere for it.
By a miracle I had a backup of my image directories on a Power Book that I am retiring and finally noticed that the missing image was there just before deleting that directory too! I then figured out why this image (and many others) had not been imported. So, now I am going through manually and adding extensions.
Does anyone know a better way -- to get Aperture to recognize extension-less images? If not, this needs to fixed in the next version as it is a disaster waiting to happen.

Well there's an idea...probably would need to go into Bridge <g> to do that most efficiently .. or Automator.
It turns out that I already had added extension to most (but not all) images in my main image directory and so they got into Aperture alright. I just have to go through all the images in the backup I just found (where many did not get extensions) to find the ones that Aperture missed. So far, there have been just a couple more...
The real problem is that Aperture should not be missing these, even if they are archaic. At the very least, Aperture's import should give a warning that there are files in a folder that it is not going to import AND is not even showing. Otherwise this is a serious gotcha!

  • Lightroom does not identify jpg images as duplicates

I'm using Lightroom 5.3.  I'm importing images to my catalog from one external drive to another using the "copy" function.  I have "do not import suspected duplicates" checked, but Lightroom does not identify duplicate jpg images as such and lists them as new files to import.  If I import these images they show up in my database/catalog with the -2 designation.  The images are identical in filename, capture time, size and EXIF info.  I have tried removing my preferences file and starting another but that doesn't change the behavior.  I have seen other posts with similar issues but cannot find a solution that works for me.  I don't see this listed as a bug either.  If anyone has suggestions for a fix I would appreciate it.  Thank you.

There is a catalog-specific preference whether to allow LR to adjust date/time values in raw files.  I think that is for LR to add a timezone or not.  Since these are JPGs maybe this setting doesn’t apply, but maybe the JPGs were imported from RAWs that had it set, or maybe the setting does apply to JPGs, now, too.
It would be worth checking the catalog-specific setting and playing with it to see if you can get the timezone to either exist or not existing for both the images, depending on which one has it, now.
If your current system timezone is not UTC-7, then it would make sense for LR to interpret the images without a timezone to be in the system timezone and different than the ones that have a timezone associated with them.
If the pictures were taking across multiple timezones then there probably isn’t’ a good way to get them all to have the corresponding timezone as the other copy you’re trying to import.

  • IPhoto '09 does not recognize any faces

I have imported about 4000 photos into my iPhoto Library but it doesn't detect any faces. Not at all, after 30 minutes of using, I can only do the "find missing faces" which is useless. No matter how many faces I frame MANUALLY. The system will not find any other faces.

  • IPhoto '09 won't recognize .jpg images for importing.

The resulting pop-up window displays the otherwise normal images as Unix Executable Files. If I convert the .jpg to .jpg 2000, then it imports with no problems. Result is a MUCH larger file. Any fixes?

Make a temporary, backup copy (if you don't already have a backup copy) of the library and try the following:
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your
         User/Home()/Library/ Preferences folder.
2 - delete iPhoto's cache file, Cache.db, that is located in your
         User/Home()/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder.
3 - launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding down the Option key when launching iPhoto.  You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.
NOTE 2:  In Lion and Mountain Lion the Library folder is now invisible. To make it permanently visible enter the following in the Terminal application window: chflags nohidden ~/Library and hit the Enter button - 10.7: Un-hide the User Library folder.
If the above doesn't help try the following:
1 - download Convert to JPG and Embed sRGB profile from  Toad's Cellar and drop copies of your problem files on it.  Then try importing the new jpegs that are created.

  • Unable to import photos to Lr from iPhoto; Lr does not recognize iPhoto as an Application

When I press IMPORT in Lr4.2, a choice of accounts and sources appears:  I press Applications under Mac HD, some apps, like iWork and Documents appear, but not iPhoto.  When I try to export JPEGS from iPhoto, a sign appears saying there is not enough disk space to export.  Please help.  Thank you.

Hey, Bobcat, I had the same problem.  I'm learning LR4 from Scott Kelby's book, "Lightroom 4 for Digital Photographers."  He led me in the right direction, but wasn't explicit about our problem of importing iPhoto images.  Anyhow, here's how I finally figured out how to do it.
First I set up a new folder in Macintosh HD >Users>(your name)>Pictures called "My Lightroom pictures."  (Kelby suggests keeping ALL your photos in a single folder, for some excellent reasons I won't detail here.)
Anyhow, with that folder set up, go into iPhoto, and export the images you want into this "My Lightroom pictures" folder.  (You can set up subfolders there, if you want, and export into them.  I do this for each iPhoto "event.")
Now go into LR4 and hit your import button.  The folder "My Lightroom Pictures" should appear in the left panel, and you can take it from there, right?

  • Elements 11 does not recognize jpg - may have corrupted the files.  What to do?  Re-install?

A recent batch of vacation pics seemed to import OK into elements 11, then next time I opened the program, most of the files could no longer be read by elements or any program, e.g. Windows picture viewer, etc.  I was able to recover them from the camera card (whew!), and they are recognized by other programs but not elements 11.  Any suggestions?

No other program would open the files, either.  The problem started with one file, then literally hundreds of vacation photos were corrupted as well.  I found a program on the internet that recovered the deleted files from my camera's card.  Elements would not import these jpegs even after uninstalling and re-installing PSE, although I could open them with other programs, and even open them one by one with the editor.  Very strange.
