IPhoto 6 duplicates

I have recently installed iPhoto 6. It's not really a problem but odd nevertheless – when I select a thumbnail and click on "duplicate" I get an alert box saying "The volume for DCSNXXXX.jpg cannot be found. Insert the disk… etc". Clicking on the OK button has no effect but when I click on "Cancel" lo and behold the picture is duplicated anyway. What have I done wrong?

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Check iPhoto's Advanced preference section and make sure you've got the checkbox selected to copy photos into the library when importing like this. If not then you're using an alias based library that just creates aliases with links to the location of the original source file at the time of import. Post back with what you find.
Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB file backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

I want to download the "FREE" iPhoto duplicate remover software, but the download process keeps asking me for my payment information. I have tried it several times.. But it says I cannot download this app unless I give my payment information.. So I went back and looked again and again.. and it still says it's "Free"...

You need to contact the authors re download or payment issues - we are only users like yourself and help with iPhoto for the Mac issues
here is Old TOad's list of potential packages including his comments
These applications will identify and help remove duplicate photos from an iPhoto Library:
    iPhoto Library Manager - $29.95
Duplicate Annihilator - $7.95 - only app able to detect duplicate thumbnail files or faces files when an iPhoto 8 or earlier library has been imported into another.
PhotoSweeper - $9.95 - This app can search by comparing the image's bitmaps or histograms thus finding duplicates with different file names and dates.
DeCloner - $19.95 - can find duplicates in iPhoto Libraries or in folders on the HD.
DupliFinder - $7 - shows which events the photos are in.
iPhoto AppleScript to Remove Duplicates - Free
PhotoDedupo - $4.99 (App Store) -  this app has a "similar" search feature which is like PhotoSweeper's bitmap comparison.  It found all duplicates
Duplicate Cleaner for iPhoto - free - was able to recognize the duplicated HDR and normal files from an iPhone shooting in HDR
Some users have reported that PhotoSweeper did the best in finding all of the dups in their library: iphoto has duplicated many photos, how...: Apple Support Communities.
If you have an iPhone and have it set to keep the normal photo when shooting HDR photos the two image files that are created will be duplicates in a manner of speaking (same image) but there are only twp apps that detected the iPhone HDR and normal photos as being duplicates: PhotoSweeper and Duplicate Cleaner for iPhoto.  None of the other apps detected those two files as being duplicates as they look for file name as well as other attributes and the two files from the iPhone have different file names.
iPLM, however, is the best all around iPhoto utility as it can do so much more than just find duplicates.  IMO it's a must have tool if using iPhoto.

  • IPhoto duplicates all of my photos and doesn't recognize new folders.

I am using a Macbook pro, Mountain lion, and Iphoto.  What a nightmare!  Iphoto duplicates every photo or folder I import.  If I create a new folder it cannot find the folder or the photos within.  I have tried updating IPhoto but it appears my IPhoto is up to date.
Is there a fix for this?
If not what is the easiest way to export my photos and uninstall Iphoto?

Unfortunately I have the same problem as DFMitchell.
Whenever I import photos from either my Nikon camera or my iPhone, either the device (which doesn't seem likely given they are two completely separate devices made by two different companies) or iPhoto itself creates a small thumbnail duplicate of the image. The name differs slightly to :*number*.jpg instead of *number*.JPG. as such, when I navigate through Finder to All Images and look at my images in the source folder, I can see a duplicate of every image. When I navigate to the same photo through iPhoto itself, I cannot see that duplicate.
I originally thought this was a problem and so began to manually and painfully delete all these duplicates from the Finder window. However now in iPhoto, the thumbnail image that you can usually see as the 'front' photo on each event folder (ie before you even go into the event) has disappeared. additionally, normally you can move your mouse over an event folder (again before you enter it) and the different images in that event flicker across. Now it's just blank. However when I enter the event i can still see all the photos so I know they're still there.
Question is : why does iPhoto create the duplicate?
Second Question : If my guess is right and the small duplicate is meant to be a thumbnail image which can be seen in the events window, how do I get them back now that i've deleted them? (they're gone out of the trash too)
Note to self - Apple always has a reason for what they do. don't question and don't mess with it especially when you don't understand!!!

  • IPhoto duplicate in launchpad

    Hi there,
I have a problem with iPhoto duplicate in my Lunchpad.
I have read most of the threads here (I believe) regarding application duplicates in Launchpad, but I can't seem to find a solution.
Most people appear to have problems after osx lion upgrade from snow leopard.
I, on the other had, have just bought the new Macbook Air with OSX lion native on the system.
I have gone through the usual post unboxing update, and updated iPhoto through the app store. Since I have done this, I have 2 iphotos in my launchpad, both of which launch the same version number of iphoto. (9.1.5):
i have done a spotlight search of "iphoto", this only turns up one application in the folder
there is no duplicate application folder anyway as this was not an upgrade from an older osx
there is no duplicate of an older version of iphoto in the application folder
i have even gone so far as deleting the dock iphoto icon
i have even deleted my whole iphoto library (they're backed up elsewhere)
In short I have no idea where the duplicate is...
    Any one have ideas?

    re: launchpad DB.
Anyone else have a Macbook Air with native Lion?
I have tried searching for Library\application support, but there is no "dock" folder people are describing...
That seems to be a dead end for me.
    My Library\application support folder has:
apple, avbdeviced, crashreporter, garageband, ilifemediabrowser, proapps, scripteditor...
... folders, and that is all.

  • IPhoto duplicates/messed up import? Different file sizes?

After transferring photos from our old Mac to the iMac, there are now many duplicate photos that I'd like to clear out. (My partner did the transfer, so I can't tell you the specifics of what went wrong). There are numerous events titled Original and a second event of the same photos, although there may be more photos in the second event due to created duplicates that have been modified. Comparing the two events, the photo file sizes are smaller in the original set than in the second set. Why is that? For otherwise identical photos, which should I delete?
And is there any reason not to open iPhoto from the dock and delete duplicates?

(My partner did the transfer, so I can't tell you the specifics of what went wrong).
I can tell you what they did wrong - they Imported your old iPhoto library into the new one - NEVER import an iPhoto library into another iPhoto library - it does not work, created massive duplication and an unusable mess
You can use iPhoto and delete duplicates (do it in batches of 100 or less emptying the iPhoto trash and system trash every batch)
The better solution is to go back and do it correctly - If the old Mac is still available and working  trash the bad iPhoto library on the new system and Connect the two Macs together (network, firewire target mode, etc)  or use an external hard drive formed Mac OS extended (journaled) and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity from the old Mac to the pictures folder of the new Mac - launch iPhoto on the new mac and it will open the library and convert it as needed and you will be ready move forward.

  • IPhoto Duplicates images?

I'd like to start using iPhoto but I've always hated the idea that it creates duplicates of my images just so that it can store them in it's own weird file system. I want my photos to stay where they are on my hard drive and I don't want to bloat my system with duplicates.
So, I opened the preferences and unchecked the box that asks if I want to copy images to my iphoto library when I import.
Then I did an import and sure enough iphoto still makes duplicates in it's own file system. Am I missing something here?
    Thanks

Then I did an import and sure enough iphoto still makes duplicates in it's own file system. Am I missing something here?
Yes. The Files in your originals folder are aliases to your own file system.
But no matter what you do, iPhoto will make thumbnails for display (in the data folder) and make a modified version for pics that you, well, modify.
You might want to think a little longer about running iPhoto in Alias mode (that is, where it doesn't manage the files). The downside of this system is that Importing and Deleting are multi-step operations, plus migrating to a new Computer or an external HD can be tricky.
Recreating your existing file structure in the iPhoto Window is very simple.
If your concern is about how iPhoto manages the files then here's how the iPhoto Library is laid out: A Note about the iPhoto Library Folder:
In this folder there are various files, which are the Library itself and some ancillary files. Then you have three folders
Originals are the photos as they were downloaded from your camera or scanner.
(ii) Modified contains edited pics, shots that you have cropped, rotated or changed in any way.
This allows the Photos -> Revert to Original command - very useful if you don't like the changes you've made.
(iii) Data holds the thumbnails the the app needs to show you the photos in the iPhoto Window.
Events in the iPhoto Window correspond exactly with the Folders in the Originals Folder in the iPhoto Library package file (Right click on it in the Pictures Folder -> Show Package Contents).
You can move photos between Events, you can rename Events, edit them, create them, as long as you do it via the iPhoto Window. Check out the Info Pane (wee 'i', lower left) the name and date fields are editable. Edit a Event Name using the Info Pane, the Event Folder in iPhoto Library/Originals will also have the new name.
And if your concern is finding your files in the structure: A Note about the iPhoto Library Folder:
In this folder there are various files, which are the Library itself and some ancillary files. Then you have three folders
Originals are the photos as they were downloaded from your camera or scanner.
(ii) Modified contains edited pics, shots that you have cropped, rotated or changed in any way.
This allows the Photos -> Revert to Original command - very useful if you don't like the changes you've made.
(iii) Data holds the thumbnails the the app needs to show you the photos in the iPhoto Window.
For my money, and always allowing for personal preference, I've never seen a good reason to NOT use iPhoto in the default setting unless you're using two photo managers.
That and a dollar will get you a cup of coffee.

  • Aperture and iPhoto Duplicate Photos - Help Please

    Hi,
I've recently moved to Mac OS from a PC and in doing so copied over all the photos from my PC and backup drives, flash drives etc with the intention of clearing them all up using iPhoto (or Aperture which I have just purchased from the App Store). There are A LOT of duplicates in the library now.
I realise after reading some of the posts here that I may have made a terrible mistake as I thought I would be able to easily organise my photos and delete duplicates which are taking up valuable disk space (I have almost 30,000 photos including the dupes).
I've read through a lot of the posts here and it seems most of these photos will now have been duplicated again by iPhoto and that there's not a simple solution to get rid of all the original dupes to free up some disk space.
Can anyone offer some help (bearing in mind I am fairly new to my Mac).
    Many thanks,
    Paul

For a quick solution to weed out the duplicates that iPhoto created you could use the keywords that Aperture sets on the originals and duplicates during the import. Have a look at the keywords in the Metadata Inspector panel. The exact name of the keyword depends somewhat on the image format that you import.
In my library I see the keywords: iPhoto Original, iPhoto Externally Edited,iPhoto Converted, iPhoto.
If you just want to keep the originals, that you imported into iPhoto and get rid of all the other versions, do the following:
    - create a smart album "keep" by defining
keywords include any of the following:  "iPhoto Original"
(and optionally "iPhoto Externally Edited", if you want to keep your edits)
    - create a smart album "delete" by defining
keywords do not include any of the following:  "iPhoto Original"
(and optionally "iPhoto Externally Edited", if you want to keep your edits)
Then select all of your pictures in "keep" and flag them,
select all of your pictures in "delete" and reject them,
open the "rejected" album and have a look, if it contains any flagged pictures, if not, trash the rejected pictures.
That should take care of plenty of your duplicates.
    Hope that helps a little

  • IPHOTO - DUPLICATE PHOTOS

Somehow I have ended up with 4 iphoto libraries - no rhyme or reason.  My goal is to have only one photo library.    One has over 40,000 pictures and another as over 30,000.  Each of the libraries have duplicate pictures.   No idea how this happened  - so I am going through the events and deleting duplicates in the event.  Typically I am able to delete the entire event as it looks like it was uploaded multiple times.
The bigger problem is trying to find out the best way to delete photos that are in both libraries.  My plan is to go to events in library 1 - write down the dates and number of pictures in that event then go to the other library to determine if that event is there.   Is there a better way to do this.  Seems crazy that pen and paper is the answer

With respect, that's not merging. That's just adding photos to a Library.
No, there's no way to open two libraries at once. No you can't just drag images from one iPhoto Window to another.
Export the Originals from one Library to folders on the Desktop. Export them as Originals. File -> Export.
    This User Tip
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-4921
has details of the options in the Export dialogue.
Switch to the second library and impor the images you exported. It will warn you about duplicates as they are imported and you'll have the opportunity to reject them.

  • IPhoto duplicates (doubles) all photos when importing

    Hi
    iMac 27 2009/10
    OSX 10.8.5
    iPhoto 11 9.4.3
When importing from an iPhone (and i think a digital camera) iPhoto imports say 10 photos but it puts 20 into iPhoto - i.e. it duplicates every photo it imports
It never used to do this and i can't see anywhere in preferences where there is a setting to import photos and double them up ?
When we import some 100 photos and we get 200 into iPhoto its a real pain to have to go through them and delete the duplicates

If you're shooting HDR photos with your iPhone and don't want double imports turn off the Keep Normal Photo under Settings ➙ Photos & Camera on your iPhone:
Frankly, I'd keep the normal photo. It might be far better than the HDR version, if the camera was not perfectly stabilised or the target moved. Usually it requires the large screen on the Mac to be able to compare the normal photo to the HDR version, to be able to see, if the HDR version is passable.

  • Iphoto duplicates in images and documents

Is it normal for images to be stored in all images and all documents,
I would like to reduce the amount I have , but first want to be sure I do not delete the originals. Surely I am using double the space?

am I ok to delete duplicates? from documents and images
    NO
or am I best leaving well alone?
    Yes!
All Images is just a list of files and being in the list does not indicate en extra copy
All images is just a list and DOES NOT indicate duplicates - it is like having three copies of your bank statement - that does not give you three times as much money
    All documents is the same
Likewise all documents is just a list and DOES NOT indicate duplicates
And if these photos are in iPhoto you must NEVER move or delete them from these lists - it will corrupt your iPhoto library - Photos in iPhoto must be managed ONLY using iPhoto
Do not ever delete iPhoto photos from the All images or the all documents lists these ARE NOT Duplicates - they are just a list of files

  • Iphoto duplicates?

I recently had to import my whole iphoto library to another hard disk to make space for editing video. To make a long story short somehow I have ended up with two copies of each image. I believe it's possible in itunes to automatically delete duplicates. Is there a way to do so in iphoto?

  • Deleting iphoto duplicates

Help, I have too many duplicate photos in iphoto and I'm not sure how it happened. I can't imagine the task of one by one comparing them myself. Any suggestions?

three choices from best to worst
1 - go back to the backup from just before you mistakenly imported an iPhoto library into your iPhoto library - you NEVER import an iPhoto library into another iPhoto library
2 - If you were trying to convert a previous library and there was nothing useful in your new library delete the bad iPhoto library and convert properly - drag the old iPhoto library to the pictures folder and launch iPhoto
3 - purchase duplicate annihilator - http://brattoo.com/propaganda/ - and hope it catches the duplicates

  • What the heck is going on with my iPhoto, duplicate, triplicate, quad

i think my iPhoto is possessed, all of my pictures seem to be growing by number.  I have up to six copies of the same picture.  Have about 4000 originals, but it's showing over 17,000 pictures.  Now most of them are extremely blurry and pixelated.  So I can't run a duplicate finder for fear it will delete the one good copy I have.    Note:  I'm  running Yosemite with all the latest Firmware upgrades.

Im not 100% sure what additional info I can provide,
How do you transfer the Photos from iPad and iPhone? Are you using Photo Stream or connect them to a USB port?
Which OS version are having on your mobile devices?  Do you have iCloud Photo Library (Beta) enabled?  (If you are using iCloud Photo Library, deleting the photos from the devices on import does no longer work)
Do you notice duplicates in the Import panel, when you connect the iPhone, iPad to USB? Keep the Camera.app on the devices open, when you import, then the Photo TSream photos will not show as well.
Now most of them are extremely blurry and pixelated.
That suggests, that some an iPhoto library got imported to iPhoto; the pixellated photos are probably thumbnails. Look at one of the pixellated photos in the Info panel in iPhoto. Are their keywords, e.g. Photo stream, and do the pixellated versions show EXIF data like camera model, lens, or are they without meta data?

  • IPhoto duplicates photos?

I am wondering if someone can clarify this for me. I always download my photos directly from my camera to iphoto. Once they are on my computer, I will go through them and delete the ones that are not any good. I was then looking in my finder and noticed that the ones that i deleted are still found on my computer. Is there anyway to stop this from happening.
Also I have noticed that if i use iphoto to edit a photo, I find duplicated of the picture in my finder (usually in the form of an original size file and a smaller one).
Any thought onto why this is happening and how to stop the Mac from making duplicates?

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. First, are you emptying the iPhoto Trash bin after moving the photos to the trash? If not then the photos will still be in the library and on the HD.
When iPhoto imports a photo into the library at least two files are created, the original and a thumbnail file, located in the Originals and Data folders accordingly. If the photo is a portrait oriented image and comes from a camera with the auto-rotate capability a 3rd version will be created and placed in the Modified folder. If you edit a photo a modified version is created so that the original file, the digital negative so to speak, is left untouched. It's the nature of the beast.
That is how iPhoto works and you should not rename, move or delete any file or folder inside the iPhoto Library while you in the Finder. If you do you'll damage the library and have to start over from scratch.
If you need to use photos outside of iPhoto then read Terence Devlin's treatise on file access for use outside of iPhoto.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.≤br>
Note: There now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

  • Iphoto duplicates and photostream issues?

I suddenly have 8 copies of most of the pictures in my photo library (even those that were taken on a separate camera and imported) and about 20 of those in my photostream from my iPhone. My Mac Book Pro is struggling under the weight of 56000 photos! Where have I gone wrong?

What version of iPhoto are you running and what system?  When did these duplicate appear?
Your best solution would be to restore the backup copy of the library that was made just before this problem occurred
