Iphoto 6 to iphoto 11 HELP

I am moving from a computer running Tiger to one running Mountain Lion. I was able to import my iPHoto library, but it loaded a whole bunch of duplicate photos, events with  just one photo in them, and NONE of my comments which is what I was using to categorize my photos, now I have about 9,000 random photos with no way to identify them.  What can I do???

Follow-up on this year-old thread.  Much appreciate the help around here, but it's interesting how self-assured (even smug) responders can be to those who post questions!
I just made the transition from Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion.  Followed what was so *categorically* asserted as the way of doing the photo transfer (supposedly simply copy over the iPhoto Library to the new computer).
Well, guess what?  I now have two iPhoto libraries-- and it still opens up the Mountain Lion new one that has in intitial photo I saved the other day.  I think that you helpful souls are ignoring the many compounding variables!
For example, copying the library doesn't automatically replace one with the other (smart, actually!) and when it opens it doesn't simply use the old.  Nor did it give me a prompt as to which one I wanted to use!
So, I thought a ste-by-step guide by someone who went through this would help other users in the same situation (as opposed to smart, helpful, yet glib, responses ).   (Sorry, but it's a pet peeve of mine that informed, smart people are all too often wrong, making sweeping statements, and even, not here, put down the questioners.  At the same time, I much appreciate the posts in this thread as they provided the general approach of what to do.)
You have to:
1.  Move the current iPhoto library OUT of the Pictures folder and to the desktop.
2.  Put the old iPhoto library into the Pictures folder.
3.  Launch iPhoto.
4.  it will then prompt you as to which library you want to use.
It's a confusing dialog box as you're being asked to choose between two files both of which are titled "iPhoto Library".   However, it does show the path to the file, so choose the one that's in the Pictures folder and NOT on the desktop.
5.  It will then give you an alert that your old iPhoto Library was created by a different version of iPhoto and ask if you want to upgrade the library.
I clicked OK.
I'm now timing it.  The dialog box says, "Now writing new iPhoto library data."  It's a 29 gb library, so it'll be interesting to see just how long this takes...
Wow!  Done in two minutes!
Note:  I moved the ML's installed library to the desktop, but I'll wager renaming it or deleting it would work as well-- don't do that, though, unless you are sure that it has no photos in it or none that you want to save.
Of course, now I have to search for information on reducing the size of an iPhoto library!  In normal use, I believe it's best to choose the option "Keep originals" or whatever it is now and copy the photos into the library.
But 29 gb??!!!

Help!   I have an iMac 24" OSX version 10.6.8.  My iphoto is having problems.  It will not open properly.  All I get is the little wheel going around and around.  My iphoto is:  iphoto'11 version 9.2.3(629.52).  What do I need to do to remedy this?  I recently installed InstallMac.  I don't want this on my computer.  I don't know how to get it off.  I'm afraid that is what scrogged my iphoto.  Can anyone tell me how to correct this situation?

    Re: iPhoto:
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

If you have iPhoto '09, you cannot browse or restore seleted items from your backups.  See the pink box in #15 of Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions.
Mail should work, however, per the blue box there.

  • Aperture and iPhoto Duplicate Photos - Help Please

    Hi,
I've recently moved to Mac OS from a PC and in doing so copied over all the photos from my PC and backup drives, flash drives etc with the intention of clearing them all up using iPhoto (or Aperture which I have just purchased from the App Store). There are A LOT of duplicates in the library now.
I realise after reading some of the posts here that I may have made a terrible mistake as I thought I would be able to easily organise my photos and delete duplicates which are taking up valuable disk space (I have almost 30,000 photos including the dupes).
I've read through a lot of the posts here and it seems most of these photos will now have been duplicated again by iPhoto and that there's not a simple solution to get rid of all the original dupes to free up some disk space.
Can anyone offer some help (bearing in mind I am fairly new to my Mac).
    Many thanks,
    Paul

For a quick solution to weed out the duplicates that iPhoto created you could use the keywords that Aperture sets on the originals and duplicates during the import. Have a look at the keywords in the Metadata Inspector panel. The exact name of the keyword depends somewhat on the image format that you import.
In my library I see the keywords: iPhoto Original, iPhoto Externally Edited,iPhoto Converted, iPhoto.
If you just want to keep the originals, that you imported into iPhoto and get rid of all the other versions, do the following:
    - create a smart album "keep" by defining
keywords include any of the following:  "iPhoto Original"
(and optionally "iPhoto Externally Edited", if you want to keep your edits)
    - create a smart album "delete" by defining
keywords do not include any of the following:  "iPhoto Original"
(and optionally "iPhoto Externally Edited", if you want to keep your edits)
Then select all of your pictures in "keep" and flag them,
select all of your pictures in "delete" and reject them,
open the "rejected" album and have a look, if it contains any flagged pictures, if not, trash the rejected pictures.
That should take care of plenty of your duplicates.
    Hope that helps a little

  • Move  iPhoto 9 library  to  iPhoto 11 please help?

I wan´t to move my iPhoto 9 library from my old computer, to my new computer with iPhoto 11 please help me?

Connect the two Macs together (network, firewire target mode, etc) and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity from the old Mac to the pictures folder of the new Mac - launch iPhoto on the new mac and it will open the library and convert it as needed and you will be ready move forward.

The iPhoto application should be in your applications folder
If you have removed it and your computer came with restore disks then you will need them to reinstall. Or you can purchase a version on DVD or from the App Store. Apple my be able to reace missing restore disks for a nominal charge

I can not enable selected photos to sync to my iphone 5. It is greyed out. I do not want to sync my entire iPhoto library.. help!

Guys, I found another user and what he said to do worked!!! I have copied the information below:
This was 1 of the things that happend to me too, the other one was that at the bottom of the itunes page were it says all the memory info, it marked that I had over 3gb of other memory wich I didn't.
Anyways what I did was to unmark the calendar, contacts etc. ( so that they wont sync with the computer ), pressed apply,  then I marked all of them again, apply again and for last I pressed Sync wich is at the bottom right coner by the apply botton.
I'm not sure that had anything to do with it but it worked, my music appeard both of my itunes playlists and the ones I bought in itunes.  Also the other memory dissapeard and it's all good.
I'm not sure this will help you but thats my 5 cents, if the problem continues its better to call customer service and ask for a technician.
Hope your problem gets solved. Have a nice day.

  • Installed Maverick and now iPhoto wont open, help

I've just installed Maverick from using Snow Leopard and now iPhoto won't open and the message"You can’t open the application “iPhoto” because it is not supported on this type of Mac." appears. Since I have hundreds of photos in iPhoto and iPhoto was supported on this mac previously how can I access them?

Since my last post I found some instructions courtesy of Old Toad.   They might work for you.
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library if the photos are missing.
Run Option #4, Rebuild Database, followed by Option #1 if needed.

You probably have to run one or all of the IPHOTO resets/repairs over your library.   Its in IPHOTO help which keys you have to hold down while opening IPHOTO.
    Sorry don't remember which keys.

  • Scrolling down album list in iPhoto causes iPhoto crash

Scrolling down to bottom of the album list in the sidebar in iPhoto causes iPhoto to lock-up with the spinning ball or crash altogether, any suggestions?

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
    Step 1
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Enter the name of the crashed application or process in the Filter text field. Select the messages from the time of the last crash, if any. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
    Step 2
Still in the Console window, look under User Diagnostic Reports for crash reports related to the process. The report name starts with the name of the crashed process, and ends with ".crash". Select the most recent report and post the entire contents — again, the text, not a screenshot. In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.) Please don’t post shutdownStall, spin, or hang logs — they're very long and not helpful.

Do you have one of those newer Macs which require a special update? From other posts, it seems there are now three different OS versions/updates - each one of specific Macs.
I'd call Apple and give them your serial number as well as - important - your build number (click on the Apple and About this Mac; under Mac OS X, click on the numbers until you get to build .......)
Here are two that might be for your model:

Can I delete iPhoto amd iPhoto library once Photos is in place, or iPhoto is still useful.

    Yes -  but don't.
Wait until Photos matures.  Both libraries will live side by side.  As will the apps. You can still open your iPhoto library with iPhoto.

Why not make the changes on the Home Computer, then copy the iPhoto Library Folder from the Home computer to the laptop? Then Download BatchMod from

And apply it to the iPhoto Library Folder on the laptop using the settings found here:
