IPhoto current selected albums (Plural)

In iPhoto, when you have selected photos, how do you capture which albums are selected?
(especially those children in Library)

Geoffrey:
I hope I have understood your request. In order to find which album(s) a selected photo, or group of selected photos are found, you have to go about it a little backwards, by first sorting through all the albums in the Library, and generating a list of what is there. You then must go through each photo in the selection to see if that photo is in one of the albums, grab the album name, and move to the next album. This script will work, although it is probably slow on large collections:
set selected_Data to {} --This will hold all the data of the selected images
set album_Collection to {} --This will hold all the individual iPhoto album data
tell application "iPhoto"
set all_albums to name of albums 2 thru -2 --Excludes Library and Trash
repeat with an_album in all_albums
set end of album_Collection to {an_album as string, (id of every photo in album an_album)} --Creates a list of each album, and a list of the id of every photo in that album
end repeat
set a to selection --Whatever is selected in iPhoto
repeat with b in a
set dummy to {} --Temporary list
repeat with album_set in album_Collection
if b's id is in (item 2 of album_set) then set end of dummy to (item 1 of album_set) --Cycle through each album and see if the selected photo is in that album and if so, add that album's name to the list
end repeat
if dummy = {} then set dummy to {"Not in any album"}
set end of selected_Data to {b's name, dummy} --Builds the final list, which holds the name of each selected photo, and a list of all albums where that photo is found.
end repeat
end tell
selected_Data
In my test Library, I have 1191 photos, 37 movies, and 10 albums. I am working on an Intel Mac running 10.4.8 and got these results for 10 randomly selected photos:
{{"map", {"Last 12 Months"}}, {"DSC02923.JPG", {"Rob's Chicks"}}, {"DSC_0194.JPG", {"Last 12 Months", "Orlando"}}, {"DSC02593.JPG", {"Last 12 Months", "Orlando"}}, {"DSC02576.JPG", {"Last 12 Months", "Previous Prints", "4x6 White Borders", "Orlando"}}, {"DSC02463.JPG", {"Last 12 Months"}}, {"DSC02446.JPG", {"Last 12 Months"}}, {"DSC02421.JPG", {"Last 12 Months", "Previous Prints", "4x6 White Borders"}}, {"DSC02405.JPG", {"Last 12 Months", "Previous Prints", "4x6 White Borders", "James"}}, {"DSC02362.JPG", {"Last 12 Months", "Veterinary"}}}
It took about 9 seconds.
Good luck, hope this helps

  • IPHOTO 09 WONT SYNC SELECTED ALBUMS WITH IPHONE 4 VIA ITUNES

I am posting this as a question and will proceed to answer it as per the solution provided by Applecare case id
    265819669
    System
    I run Powemac G5 OSX 10.5.8 Leopard, iLife 09 and iPhone 4 & iPad2
Software versions are iPhoto 09 V 8.1.2, iTunes and iOS 5.01 on theiPad and iPhone
    Problem 1
Following software updates on all my devices I began to run into sync problems with my iphone 4, namely error message 1104
On contacting my mobile service provider they suggested:
connect iphone to itunes, selected photo tab and untick the box sync photos from iphoto then proceed to sync
    Solution 1
This allowed iphone 4 to sync thus eliminating my 1104 error message problem
    Problem 2
iPhone 4 will no longer sync selected albums, events and faces with iPhone 4
After level 3 escalation within Apple the problem was reffered to iphoto computer support who delievered this fix.
It was identified as a problem with my iphoto library not being seen by itunes despite my iphoto library functioning normally (or so I thought).
Solution 2 (I will try and articulate this as best as I can)
Open iPhoto app whilst alt key is depressed
select/ locate the iphoto library source file from your hard drive which itunes is using.  This now tells you where iphoto library resides ie this is your library in which all your photos slideshows and star rating data resides.
FOR THE PURPOSE OF THIS FIX IT WAS AGREED TO RESTORE AN EARLIER VERSION OF MY IPHOTO LIBRARY FROM A TIME MACHINE BACKUP - TIME MACHINE SAVED THE DAY HERE - TAKE HEED - BACKUP, BACKUP, BACKUP.  BEFORE PROCEEDING ANY FURTHER, I WOULD RECOMMEND BACKING UP AT THIS STAGE, JUST FOR SAFETY SAKE.
Go to Time machine, locate iPhoto library and then select restore.
The file will be restored to it's original location and you can now begin to work on the fix without jeopardising your original library
    Close iphoto, and reset system
Open iPhoto with alt key depressed, select the recently restored file
Open itunes and try and sync your iOS device
Does the selected, albums and faces tabs in Photo tab now work? If so problem solved, if not read on.
    Restart system
Open iPhoto with the alt and command key depressed
(You will be working on the restored file as iphoto located this automatically when opening - see previous note)
a list of boxes will appear detailing repair permission etc - ensure all are ticked and follow instruction to rebuild reorganise the iphoto library.  Sorry for being vague here but I can't remember the screen details.
Let iphoto rebuild the iPhoto library file
    close iPhoto and restart system
Try the sync process again in itunes.  Does the Photo tab option whick allows you to select pictures, albums and faces should now work?
If so, problem solved, well almost.  If not, refer for further help.
Given you have just cured the problem with a restored backup iPhoto library file, should you need to work on your most recent file since that back up, repeat solution 2 from the beggining.  Once complete, you will need to move the iPhoto library file which didn't sync to the trash.
Should you have events in your originl iPhoto library which don't reside in your backup file, export these events into folders by using export "current" feature in iPhoto, then drage them bag into your new library once your problem is solved.
USE GREAT CAUTION HERE, DON'T DELTE YOUR TRASH UNTIL YOU HAVE TESTED EVERYTHING WORKS CORRECTLY.
I hope this helps someone, if so please let me know.

Other folks have resolved similar issues by trashing  the iPod Photo Cache.

  • Add Current Facebook Albums to iPhoto?

Has anyone found a way to download your current facebook albums to iPhoto? I'd like to be able to do this so that I could add new pictures to them and have them sync back up to facebook instead of having to create new ones.

I know this question has been tossed around a few times after looking at the existing threads, but I am wondering if anyone knows of a way to get iPhoto to recognize and sync an existing Facebook album without creating a new album and moving the photos over?
    no
The problem with that is that I lose the initial post on the wall with the album and it also nullifies links I've shared via Twitter to the albums. I've even gone as far as look at possibly modifying the database data, but that seems pretty much impossible to do without corrupting it. I really like the idea of iPhoto syncing and managing Facebook albums, but it seems pretty ridiculous that I can't add existing albums regardless of the quality of the images in them. Anyone agree?
it makes no difference what we users think - iPhoto is what it is - to make suggestions iPhoto menu ==> provide iPhoto feedback

  • Old Mac Pro with 7.0 iPhoto transferred selected photo albums to my iPad. New iMac with iPhoto 11.0 will not transfer photo albums to my iPad. Why not?

I just purchased the new iMac with the latest iPhoto. Transferred my iPhoto library from my old Mac Pro. Upgraded iPhoto app and then tried to transfer photo albums to my iPad. New iPhoto will not allow transfer of selected albums, while old iPhoto did allow me to sync my selected albums to my iPad. Am I doing something wrong?

I do not have Last 12 Months selected. I also do not have Events or Faces or any of those newer designations selected. I have literally thousands of photographs in iPhoto, which is why I keep the select, special few hundred or so I want on my iPhone in very specific albums. These are the albums I select to sync. However, not all of the photos in these albums are uploading to my iPhone. They were on my iPhone and synced perfectly fine until the switch to the new laptop this weekend. All files were migrated to the new laptop, and all files are there and viewable on iPhoto. Something is causing some of the photos not to sync. That is what I need assistance with....

  • TA22992 Trying to sync new photos from iphoto withou having the old photo synced on ipad2 but when I select sync from iphoto the old photos are already included. How do I stop itunes from preselecting photos? Already try "selected albums, events, etc" no

Trying to sync new photos from iphoto without having the old photo synced on ipad2 but when I select sync from iphoto the old photos are already included. How do I stop itunes from preselecting photos? Already tried selecting "selected albums, events, and faces, and automatically include" then I enter "no Events" with no success the photos still are being synced along with the new photos. I want to be able to add new photo and remove old photos. Please help this has taken a lot of my time trying to figure it out.

If I knew the answer I would have given it - but since it is not an iPhoto question I suggested
You might try the iPad forum - or the iTunes forum - this really is not an iPhoto question

  • Why can I no longer select albums. folders etc when syncing photos from iphoto

When I go to sync my iphone 4s with IOS6 I am no longer to use the option on photos to sync selected albums etc.  I only get the option to sync ALL photos. Am I doing something wrong here?

Are you still at iPhoto 9.4? If so, try updating to 9.4.1:

If still no joy after the iPhoto update, delete your existing iPod Photo cache. For instructions on where to find it, see the following document:

  • Can't Synch Selected Albums from iPhoto to iPhone

I'm trying to sync "Selected Albums" in iPhoto from iTunes, but the option is grayed out, so I can only choose "All photos and albums." I do have albums created in iPhoto. What's the problem?

I'm having the same problem as well. My iPhoto has about 15 albums, all with standard naming conventions (no numbers, letters, crazy characters) and I only have the option to sync "all photos" or "last import." iPhone does not recognize any of the albums I have created in iPhone. I can sync all photos, but I've got a couple gig worth of photos that I don't need on my iPhone.

  • IPhoto behaviour with Albums

can anyone explain or point me in the direction of the reaoning behind iphotos behaviour with Albums and Smart Albums in 2 situations.
the first, is when using Airpics App and Server, the second when viewing a shared library.
my set up is my iPhoto main DB is on a headless Mini. I also have a MBP on the same wireless network that view and controls the Mini.
in situation 1, when my iPad views my Minis library via thr Airpics apps, it says it only views Albums and Smart Albums, not Events but i can see an item that is an event. it consequently is the last full import i do so is the last import considered an album or smart album?
in 2, when i view my Mini iPhoto DB on my MBP via sharing, lots of Albums and Smart Albums come up from the past that i have deleted. Where is it gettign this info from? is it old stuff from the Minis DB coming through? Or are these current or old stuf from my MBP somehow? when i open the Minis DB on my MBP using Alt-Open and selecting the DB Directly instead of over sharing, these Albums / Smart Albums dont exist. i only see what i expect to see, Currwnt set up..

    thank you again Terence.
you see ma bit of an iPhoto Guru, Terence and i dont know how else to contact you and i know its niot right to change a thread half way through but do you have any knowledge on the best way to handle this situation:
i have my iphoto on my headless Mini, controlled by MBP remotely and within the same Wi fi network when home. Iphoto over both is unusably slow. How could i combat this? im told not to use the Mini Library via MBP sleected via ALT when opening as if WiFi drops out it can corrupt. If i use the Sharing from the iPhoto.Mini to MBP, iPhoto.Mini must be open therefore iPhoto.Mini on Sharing on MBP cant be editted, only viewed. The one utility that helps is the iPhoto Manager but all that essentially does is copy from one to another over WiFi so i dont see the difference in that app doing it or me manually doing it, TBH id rather manually do it.
And i need to store the iPhoto main DB at home as iTunes and my iPad use it while i'm not there, and its now too big to carry around on a 5 year old MBP.
I like a lot of others seem lost on how to effectively manage and use iPhoto

  • IPhoto 6 Hardcover Albums - Look 100% OK to me!

I just bought three hardcover copies of the same iPhoto 6 photo album.
They look just fine to my eye.
In fact, when others see them, I often hear a "Wow!" and "How can I do that?"
Just thought I'd post a good news story here, since there seems to be an awful lot of negative comments on the forum.

    GraceT:
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. FWIW I create a book for each of my grandchildren chronicling their first year. In previous versions I've used the Story Book theme but it's no longer available. I now use the Snapshots theme. It's informal and allows me to tell a story along with the photos.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Selected albums, Events....grayed out during sync

Little history...Had an older Macbook (the black one) that finally died....replaced with a new MacBook Pro today....restored old "blacky" content from a Time Machine restore....opened iPhoto and it required an updater (iPhoto Library Upgrader) to be ran...iPhoto seems to work perfectly after update...I can connect my iPhone 5 and create new events and copy pics from phone to iPhoto Library..... but when I attempt to sync with iTunes the "select albums, Events...." option is grayed out...I deleted slideshows (suggestion from another thread, addressing & in a xml string) to no avail....posting here as consensus Ive read its usually something to do with iPhoto
...iTunes is current as is iPhoto....any help would be appreciated....

Can you access the iPhoto Library from any other apps? Word Processors? Mail? etc?

  • Is it possible to copy the iphoto library and albums from a G5 to a macpro

I would like to copy my iphoto library and albums from a G5 10.5.8 iphoto 8 to a macpro 10.6.2 with iphoto 9. I would like all the photos and albums to appear in the macpro just as they were in the G5. I have vantecs ezshare adapter that allows you to drag files between two computers mac or windows. Copying photos should not be a problem but its the albums I want to go with the photos and appear in iphoto 9 on the macpro.

iPhoto '09 will open and convert any previous version of the iphoto library - if it is working correctly on the old system it should convert
Firewire target mode is a good way to transfer the iPhoto library - make the connection and drag the entire iPhoto library at one intact as a single entity to the new computer (put it on the desktop or somewhere so as not to mess up what you have done - depress the option key and launch iPhoto on the new system and select the library you just copies (be sure not to select the one on the old computer - you do not want to convert it - conversion is a one way operation) - it should open and convert and be ready to use - then you can quit iPhoto and place it where you want and do the option launch again to tell iPhoto where it is - and do the option launch any time you want to switch between multiple libraries

  • Iphoto events vs albums

If photos are deleted from events will they remain in the albums I created. I copied and pasted the pics from events into albums, and now want to delete the events so we don't have duplicates...

If photos are deleted from events will they remain in the albums I created.
    No.
iPhoto works on a similar Library based principle to iTunes. Every Photo is in the Library, each Album (like a playlist in iTunes) is a subset of the Library.
Events are the Library. They broadly correspond to the actual folders on the HD that contain the pics. Trash a pic from an Album, you remove it from the Album, but it's still in the Library. Trash a pic from an Event and it's gone from the Library and all the albums too.
I copied and pasted the pics from events into albums, and now want to delete the events so we don't have duplicates...
First off: don't copy and paste. Drag and drop is more reliable way to move photos around in the iPhoto Window.
Second: There are no duplicates. Albums simply reference the photos in the Library. A pic can be in 50 Albums with no duplication required, no extra disk space used. A photo in more than one Event requires a duplicate.
    For the benefit of nequetech
    This is not true:
Events in iPhoto are actually Albums.
    This is incorrect:
    They mean the same thing,
    As is this:
    unless you have older versions.
    This
If you were to delete the duplicates, I suggest you drag every picture from one event to a folder in your desktop.
is data destructive. You only get the current version of your photo, not the Original, you lose a lot of metadata as well.
This may be your preferred way to deal with duplicates, but Duplicate Annihilator is at least non-destructive - and I'm not at all sure that the OP actually has a duplicates issue at all.

  • IPhoto '11 deletes albums

iPhoto '11 deletes albums, poof they're gone.

Perhaps not exactly the same fault but I have experienced two crashes while populating a particular album. After the crash, only the very first picture is left in the album. Furthermore, none of the pictures are in the "last 12 months" file. Worse: I cannot find the data file used by iPhoto. If I could find it, I might be ablle to recover from the backup disk. (I am 'populating' through drag and drop from a file folder).
The irony of this is that I am trying to assemble a simple slide show and I would normally do this by putting selected pictures into a file UNSORTED or, to use Apple's terminology: Arranged: none - but that doesn't work; the file is sorted on one of the parameters - name, size, type, etc - whether you want it or not. So I attempted to use iPhoto and have just lost three days work with, apparently, no way to recover in spite of having backup.

  • IPhoto hangsup uploading album to homepage

I'm trying to upload photos, but am having a problem. I have enough space on my iDisk, but the Publish Home Page Status bar just says "Connecting." And it was only able to upload 2.1 of 2.7 MB of pics. Also, my Internet connection is working fine.
    The steps I'm taking.
    1. Open iPhoto.
    2. Select album titled "Athens"
    3. Click homepage
    4. Change theme to Gen Y, click the box next to "Send Me a Message,"
and set to a 2-column layout
    5. Click publish
    6. Watch 22 of 29 pictures get uploaded. The message - which I did
include in my first inquiry - says
    "Publish HomePage. Transferring 23 of 29 pictures...[Then there's the
blue and white status bar] Transferred 2.1 MB of 2.7 MB."
It has been hung up on that picture for over an hour now. I have uploaded several photo albums over the past two days with no problems, other than this one. I am using a cable modem. There are no other behavior problems or relevant issues

What I would do is take #23 at the last of the page and then try the upload again. If it stalls on #29 then there is something wrong with that image file.
Or just take out #23 and see if all goes up. If it does you can manually add #23 to the folder for that page and then edit and update it online.
Or, export #23 to the desktop, open it in Preview and export from it to a new file. Then import back into iPhoto, replace the old image with the new one and try again.
