IPhoto edits saving as zero kb?

I'm having some very frustrating issues with photo editing in iPhoto. Some photos edit completely fine, whereas with others the edited file will save as 0KB. On a few occasions reverting the file back to it's original and re-editing and saving seems to work. On other occasions nothing I try will work.
I have been using a Samsung camera for a number of years and have never had issues with either iPhoto or the camera. I recently bought a Nikon Coolpix which is when the editing issues began. I also used a newer and high MP Coolpix with the same iPhoto and had similar issues.
I'm using iPhoto '09. Version 8.1.2
Can anyone help me with a solution to this issue?
Thanks

Sounds like you may have to reinstall iPhoto. To do so you'll have to delete the current application and all files with "iPhoto" in the file name with either a .PKG or .BOM extension that reside in the HD/Library/Receipts folder and from the /var/db/receipts/  folder,
Then install iPhoto from the source it came on originally and apply all available updaters.

  • Iphoto Editing with Photoshop Elements 9

I am going into Iphoto, clicking the Edit button and it brings up Photoshop Elements 9.  I make changes, they
look OK so I save it.  When I get back to IPhoto, it looks like the change has been made.  However when I go
back later in the day and click on the updated photo and there is a triangle with an exclamation point in the middle.
This means it can't find the original.  They're all located in Iphoto, what is happening?  Why does it look like the changes
are make and then I can't find them?

I do use a Mac, so I don¹t think versions is an issue. I would rather
pictures edited in PSE, which began life in iPhoto, should always be saved
back to iPhoto, as they were in Elements 8. That is not happening. Neither
do I know where to find pictures that PSE has saved.

    >> The save dialog sees an original and asks for permission to change it.
If you see the save as dialog you don't have your saving files preference set
correctly. To make versions, you must set it to Save over Original.
However, note that there is a big ol' bug in the mac version that if you even
open that particular preference window (even if you don't change anything
there) PSE will no longer add file extensions when you save. When using PSE as
external editor it doesn't matter so much, but if you ever save to the desktop
you will need to add the file extension manually to the saved file.

  • I had to erase my hard drive and then reinstall everything back from my passport external hard drive. Now my iPhoto edit is not working. I get a blank screen when I want to edit. The photos show up in the library but I cannot edit them. Help?

I had to erase my hard drive and then reinstall everything back from my passport external hard drive. Now my iPhoto edit is not working. I get a blank screen when I want to edit. The photos show up in the library but I cannot edit them. Help?

There are several possible causes for the Black Screen issue
*1. Permissions in the Library* : Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Include the option to check and repair permissions.
*2. Minor Database corruption*: Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild.
*3. A Damaged Photo*: Select one of the affected photos in the iPhoto Window and right click on it. From the resulting menu select 'Show File (or 'Show Original File' if that's available). Will the file open in Preview? If not then the file is damaged. Time to restore from your back up.
*4. A corrupted iPhoto Cache*: Trash the com.apple.iPhoto folder from HD/Users/Your Name/Library/ Caches...
*5. A corrupted preference file*: Trash the com.apple.iPhoto.plist file from the HD/Users/ Your Name / library / preferences folder. (Remember you'll need to reset your User options afterwards. These include minor settings like the window colour and so on. Note: If you've moved your library you'll need to point iPhoto at it again.)
    If none of these help:
    As a Test:
Hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Create Library'
Import a few pics into this new, blank library. Is the Problem repeated there?

What do you mean by "adjust"? Editing of Photoshop images should be done in Photoshop.
Sure, it's possible to save individual layers from an image in Photoshop as inidvidual files in a variety of formats, but what's the point? You could just as easily import the layered file, then copy/paste it into a new layer for each layer in the image and use layer visibility to control which ones show. I don't think that will do you a lot of good, though, if you use adjustment layers or opacity controls on the layer in Photoshop.

  • In the iPhoto editing tools, what is the purpose of the tool "Definition".  What does it do?

In the iPhoto editing tools, what is the purpose of the tool "Definition".  What is it used for? I did an iPhoto Book; a few photos were a little "off".

It quite literally adds definition to the photo. Don't ask my the technical procedure for this, but it makes more details visible in the photo.

  • IPhoto editing results in black patches on photos - new problem

Hello everyone - I am experiencing a brand new problem with iPhoto editing.  Have used the editing feature for four years without incident.  Since upgrading operating software a few weeks ago, I now experience sudden blackout patches on photos as soon as I click on the "Adjust" setting in the "Edit" mode.
Here are a few details on my set-up and problem:
    iPhoto version: iPhoto'09 - Version 8.1.2
    Operating System: OSX Version 10.9.1
Details - Black rectangular patches appear in either sections of photos, or completely obscure the photo whenever I click on "Adjust" in the "Edit" mode.  Only way out of this situation is to hit "Escape" key
Did it every work properly?  Yes, for four years I never had any problems.  Liked the ease of the editing features in iPhoto.  Very recently upgraded operating system to version noted above.  Problem occurring since that time.
    Error message? No
What steps taken to date? None yet - Seeking assistance through this forum.  Thanks in advance.

  • Aperture Loses iPhoto Edited Images

    Hello,
I need help on importing iPhoto libraries.
I have 22 iPhoto libraries (iPhoto 8.1.2, 140GB total for all libraries) on an iMac 27, OS 10.6.8, and am importing into Aperture 3.2.2.  I imported each iPhoto library separately and rebuilt their thumbnails before each import.  It was my understanding that Aperture would import the original iPhoto images as well as the edited images along with metadata.  Now I have discovered that in my case it does this sometimes but not always.  When it does work Aperture shows two images in a stack, the iPhoto edited image (with the keywords "iPhoto Edited" added, and the iPhoto original image (with the keywords "iPhoto Original" added).  This is what I would expect.  However, there are many images that I edited in iPhoto that show up in Aperture as just a image, the one that was edited in iPhoto.  The iPhoto original image is not there.  Aperture has added the keywords "iPhoto Converted" (whatever that means) and "iPhoto Original" (which it is not) to this photo.  If I go back to these images in iPhoto and do a revert to original, iPhoto reverts the edit back to the (true) original image. So,both the original and edited images are in iPhoto.
I have rebooted the Mac and repaired permissions but that didn't help.
Getting my Aperture library setup has been a struggle and I appreciate all the help I have gotten.  It looks like I still need more.  Thanks!
    Mike

    Hello Leonie,
You were right on - many thanks!  I thought I was facing having to start over again.
I have found Apple's Aperture User's Guide very useful but nowhere in its 907 pages have I found your instructions described or "iPhoto Converted" defined.
It works as you described and I have some comments: (1) After the resetting all adjustments in Aperture the new version continues to have these same keyword tags as before the reset.  The adjustment badge is gone and the version number is appended to the image name.  (2) I also used "New Version from Master" on some iPhoto edited photos.  This creates a new version; however, all the adjustments, keywords and badges were deleted, but the version number is appended to the name. (3) I tried "Show Master Image".  This apparently only works in Split View & Viewer (dimmed out in Browser).  When I do this the adjustments are apparently not changed except for crops which are removed (this seems odd).  Keywords and badges are not changed.  There is no version number, of course, and the image is identified as a master image.  (4) I am curious about why using Aperture's iPhoto Browser to import photos results in two photos, the iPhoto original and the iPhoto edited.  They have the appropriate iPhoto Edited or iPhoto Original tags; however, except for rotation and cropping the iPhoto adjustments appear to have been reset.  The edited ones do not have an adjustment badge, even though it was adjusted in iPhoto.  All the images have a keyword badge and Aperture has added a keyword which it the title of the iPhoto album or event the photo came from.  They all have a Master Image label at the top.  I duplicated one of the iPhoto edited images.  The duplicate displayed a Master Image label and Reset All Adjustment was dimmed.
I would appreciate your observations on these comments.
Aperture is an impressive piece of software and thanks to your help I think I am finally ready to start using it!

  • IPhoto editing on iPad

I'm sorry if this question has been asked before, but I can't seem to find an answer on it.
I want to edit (by edit, I mean add faces, locations and album names to my photo's) on my iPad. Will iPhoto editing be available on the iPad sometime soon? Or can anyone advise if there is an app where I can edit my photo's and those edit will be synced back to my Mac?
    Thanks :]

You cannot do what you are trying to do on the iPad in the current iOS. Here are the presumed photo features for iOS 5 to be released in the fall.
    http://www.apple.com/ios/ios5/features.html#photos
It does not talk specifically about the features that you are asking about, but mentions photo editing and photo organization on the iPad - albums and so on. Will it be a clone of iPhoto? - nobody will know until it is released.
For now you must use a third party app from the app store to edit and/or organize. Once you edit on the iPad, the resolution is lower (optimized for the iPad) than the photos than you sync from iPhoto so if you do edit on the iPad and copy them back into iPhoto - keep that in mind.

    no.
time machine cannot backup networked drives.
however, ChronoSync may be able to do what you want.

  • Saving iphoto edits

I've scanned an image with a high dpi, and saved it in a jpeg fromat.  I then edited this image in iPhoto.  I've saved the image on a thumb drive to mail to a vendor for printing.  The thumbdrive image shown in the Preview window of Finder shows the image as edited.  However, when I open the file the edits disappear!  I can literally see them disappearing before my eyes when I open the file!
I need to retain these edits for the eventual printing.  Any ideas as to what I am doing wrong?

Can you tell me the best way to do this?  Usually I just go to the next photo for editing by clicking on one of the arrows in the upper right of the edit screen.
What kinds of edits/effects are you applying? Some of the effects  - crop or straighten - need the "Done" to be applied before switching to the next photo with the arrow keys.
If you export like above, your edits should take.
But if your edits do not show, when exporting "Current", then your iPhoto library may have a corruption.
Run the iPhoto Library First Aid Tools.
iPhoto 6 and later: Rebuilding the iPhoto library
    To rebuild the iPhoto library:
Quit iPhoto if it is open.
Hold down the Command and Option keys on the keyboard.
    Open iPhoto.
Keep the keys held down until you are prompted to rebuild the library.
A dialog will appear with rebuild options. Select the options you want to use.
Click Rebuild to begin the rebuild process. This may take a few minutes to complete.
Select the option to "Repair the iPhoto Library Database" to check the iPhoto Library database for inconsistencies and repair them, if necessary. iPhoto '11 also includes the option to "Rebuild the iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup," which performs the same functions as it does in iPhoto '09, but should only be attempted if the "Repair the iPhoto Library Database" option does not help.
Before you select to "Rebuild", make a backup.

  • IPhoto Edits Not Saved

I am using iPhoto 7.1.1 with OS 10.5.1
I scanned some old photographs (they are in jpeg) and have been editing them using iPhoto. When I crop and straighten the scans, those changes are saved and are seen in the thumbnails.
When I make changes in the contrast, sharpness, etc using the adjust button, the changes appear on the image but are never transferred to the thumbnails.
After I leave the editing mode the changes I made to the image are no longer there. When I open up the editing tools and click the adjust button then, the changes I made are there.
I have tried exporting the image to see if the edited image would be transfered and it was the unedited image. I have also tried to drag the picture and same result (non-edited picture)
After seeing others posts on this, there appears to be a bug in the software.

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Rebuild the library as follows: launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys depressed and follow the instructions to rebuild the library. Select the first three options. See if this will help.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • IPhoto not saving simple edits

I have been using this current version of iPhoto for several weeks with no problems. Yesterday, it stopped saving simple edits even after hitting the done button. For example, I would crop a photo, click done, move onto the next photo and the previous edit would just disappear. It won't save simple enhancements or more complex adjustments either.
I am using iPhoto '11, version 9.2.3. There are no further updates available. I have not added any new software to my computer. I am at a loss. Any suggestions would be welcome!

    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In Library Manager it's the FIle -> Rebuild command)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • Why didn't iphoto edits get saved on my WD passport?

I saved my iphoto library on a WD Passport. But when my old iMac (iMac G5, OS X 10.4.11) crashed and I transferred the library from the Passport to the new computer (minimac 2.4, OS Leopard), only the photo originals showed up, not the edits. What happened? I hate to think of having to go through the whole library and re-edit.

What exactly did you transfer to the external disk and how?
Did you test to see that this transfer had gone correctly?
What exactly did you transfer to the new machine and how?
