IPod Classic won't turn on due to water damage, is there somewhere I can take it to recover the music files on it since they're not saved on my computer?

Please help, will lose thousands of songs if I can't save music files or turn on iPod, it's an iPod Classic Video.

If I'm reading your post correctly, you mean your iPod is not waking up from sleep properly?  If your iPod's controls aren't functioning correctly, a software restore on your iPod is the recommended course of action, though doing so will wipe the contents of the iPod and requires a resync to your library.
Could you elaborate further on what the exact problem is, when it happens, what you're doing as a result, etc?  Does it still play music when it's asleep? Does it wake up when plugged in to your computer or dock?  All of this information can help us pinpoint the problem and offer a better solution.

  • Ipod classic won't turn on and it just has a blank screen

My 120GB ipod classic worked fine the other day but when I went to use it today the screen is completely blank and won't turn on. I plugged it in to charge it and the screen was still just blank. I plugged it into my computer and neither itunes or my computer reads it. I tried to do the 5 R's but I could only get so far with it not showing up in itunes. can anybody help??

I have the same problem with a 20G classic. I assume it may be a dead battery but when i use the docing station i get the apple logo and a clicking sound(HD trying to boot up) then a "folder logo with !"
Will the battery replacement allow me to charge and reset the operating sytem syncing with iTunes?

  • IPod classic won't turn on and isn't recognized

Today, I started having problems with my 80gb classic and have no idea what to do with it.
I took it out of it's dock charger and plugged it into my laptop and was accessing a file off it. About a minute after I connected it, my computer said it had disconnected and I looked down to see the sad ipod face. I tried resetting it, switching it into disk mode, plugging it back into my computer and nothing would work. It's not being recognized in Finder or in iTunes and the screen won't turn on for anything. I'm out of ideas of what to do with it since this is the first major problem I've had with it.
Any suggestions on what to do would be really helpful since I have no idea what to do next with it.

  • IPod Classic won't turn on unless plugged into wall even though battery is charged

I plugged in my old iPod Classic and charged it up for a long time. I got that little plug symbol that indicates that it's fully charged. The iPod turns on and works fine when it's plugged into the wall, but as soon as I unplug it, it won't do anything at all. Just black screen. I also tried plugging it into the computer. Nothing.
I tried re-setting by toggling the "Hold" button and then pressing Play/Pause and Menu at the same time. Nothing.
Why would it be fine when plugged into the wall but not when unplugged or plugged into the computer? Is it possible that is really is not fully charged even though it did show that little plug symbol? It had been just sitting for many months.

    Hi there,
How old is your Classic? Often, after a couple of years, rechargable batteries begin to fail, especially after such a long period of inactivity. This happens with any gadget with this type of battery.
Try leaving it plugged in for 24 hours, and try again, to rule out that it isn't just really low on charge. If this doesn't help, it may be a good time to buy a replacement. New iPod Nanos and Touches will be released this October.
Below, I've linked to an Apple website which explains rechargable batteries, and why yours may not be working.

I hope this helps, and I hope upgrading your device will not feel like an unnecessary expense. Let me know if you have any more questions,

  • IPod Classic won't turn on

I've reset my iPod Classic because it wouldn't play music, but now it won't turn back on. The screen just keeps flashing the apple logo at me, the computer won't recognise my iPod when i plug it in, my computer is running Windows7 64bit and the correct iTunes is installed... Somebody please help me

My Classis shut down and wouldn't turn on.  I read on this site somewhere to click the hold button back and forward a couple times then hold the centre button and menu button together for  a few seconds.  I tried it and it worked. See how you go with that.

  • My iPod Classic won't turn on and is making loud noises?

I bought my iPod Classic in late 2009, it is out of warranty and I am really hoping I won't have to take it in.  My iPod hadn't been charged for a while so I plugged it in, I heard some strange clicking sounds that were quite loud.  Afterwards, a red circled X with the apple ipod support website would show up.  I went through the website and tried what the site said, my iPod just continues to do the same thing.  It also dosen't let me turn my iPod on to Disk Mode.  Does anyone have any helpful hints on getting my iPod to work again?

Leave it charging for at least 2 hours, till the full charge icon comes ON.
Reset the iPod -Press Menu and Center button simultaneous for about 10 secs till the Apple logo comes ON
Refer to this Apple support article on Step 2.(RESET)
    http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/five_rs/classic/
Release the button and select your prefered language.
If the above doesn't work then do a disk diagnostic as posted earlier by tt2.

As the RED X meant your Hardisk is having a stroke.

  • My ipod classic won't turn off and it's draining my battery

I bought my ipod in September 2007 and it worked fine until about 2 weeks ago just after the last software upgrade (not sure if it is connected) but now I can't turn it off.
I have also tried the sleep function but all that does is make it inactive whilst leaving the details on the screen and still draining my battery.
Since the batteries have a finite life is this Apples new way of getting our hard earned cash now that the battery life has improved!
Can anyone help me solve this problem I have tried reset (several times) and restore and neither solved the problem.
    Thanks

There are at least two diff probs here. 1) Ipod is hung and won't respond to turn off signal (pressing bottom of wheel) at all. This happens soemtimes when, for example, your ipod is connected to a docking device and you turn it off while pressing bottom of wheel wheel - then you immediately unplug it the ipod, which lights it up again -- sometimes it will won't then respnod to a a shut off signal by presing bottom of wheel. This prob has been recurring on ipods for years and can be fixed with a reset.
    2) When you press the bottom of the wheel, the ipod turns off for about a half second or so and lights right back up again. This prob i smore pernicious, has an unknown cause and is not fixed by a reset. If you restore, the prob can be fixed but only UNTIL you reload you music files onto the Ipod - then the prob automatically returns. Some suspecdt this prob has to do with a file problem and ipod's inability to appropriately deal with the file problem.

  • Brand New iPod classic won't turn on.

Minutes after getting home with my new iPod I plugged it into my computer and synced my library with it, afterwards it asked me to install an update and I let it, it told me it was going to reboot, it shut off and now it won't turn back on. I know there's some life in it as when I hold down the reset combo i hear windows indicate that I've disconnected and reconnected a USB device however nothing displays on the screen and iTunes tells me that it cannot recognize the iPod. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Just as an additional note now when the I connect the iPod windows lists a "Apple Recovery (DFU) USB Driver" in device manager.

  • Ipod classic won't turn on after reset

i resetted my ipod the other day i just got it like 3 days ago, i slid hold to on and off then held menu and select button, while i was doing that i was waiting for the aple sign but all it did was turn off, now it wont even turn on. I tried connecting it to a wall outlet and even my laptop, but still no cake, does anyone have a solution to this?

If you went through Apple you do get one free phone call to an Apple tech.
Try browsing here for info that might help:

You may have to return it. Not unhead of that an iPod may be defective!

  • My iPod classic won't turn on.

This is the U2 limited edition version.
When I plug in the USB lead to the computer or a mains adapter (I don't have a genuine Apple adapter as I lost it) all I get is either the 'Plug in the charger' icon or the battery icon showing 1 bar of charge and the charging lightening bolt symbol. I can't remember if the battery symbol is supposed to fill up black as it charges.
Sometimes when it is on the plug in icon and I hold the menu and centre button it goes to the battery charging icon with the lightening bolt again but it won't reboot.
I took the battery out and the voltage measures 3.63 volts so it looks OK I think.
If I faff about with it by disconnecting the battery and plugging in the USB and reconnecting the battery I can sometimes get it to boot untill after a while it displays the '! Apple Support' icon.
Once I have got it to boot it seems to work fine in the period before it goes to the support icon.
Any ideas? Knackard hard disk maybe?

Plug it into a charger (not the car one), let it charge for 30 minutes, then Reset it (hold down the menu and center buttons for 6 seconds with the hold switch off, i.e. no orange showing) while it is connected to power. You may have to try this several times.
If this doesn't work you may have a hardware issue, take it to your nearest Apple Store and make a Genius Bar appointment.

  • My iPod touch won't turn on at all and if fully charged

My iPod touch won't turn on at all and it's fully charged, what can I do?

    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode
How to put iPod touch / iPhone into DFU mode « Karthik's scribblings
    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

    Hi Mptuck,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
There may be a problem with your device, which could be water damage. It is best to take your device to the Apple Store and see if the Geniuses can fix it.

  • Ipod classic won't mount after updating to itunes 11.0.2

ipod classic won't mount after updating to itunes 11.0.2.
I updated to itunes 11.0.2 today, after delaying it for a looong time (I have it @ work and don't like the new layout).
Since then, none of my ipods will mount/show up/update. I've tried all USB ports, 3 ipods, 3 cords. Wondering if you know of any issues. I've restarted the mac about 15-20 times today since as soon as I hook up an ipod, itunes immediately spins the beach ball and won't let me click out of it.
I've restarted the ipods 10+ times each.
All of the ipods DO show up on my desktop though. Just not in itunes anywhere with 11.0.2.
One more thing: It's not the cables or the ipods: they both mount fine when connected to my laptop (running old *** 10.4.11 and itunes 9.)
Machine is a Mac Pro running 10.6.8.

Finding this Post took some time but I thought it was me talking when I read it. I was having the exact same issue. I have a G3 I've been upgrading like mad, including a Sonnet G4-500 CPU a Maxtor 60gb & 80gb HDs 1gb of RAM a new LaCie Firewire800 PCI card Graphics card etc. the latest was installing Panther 10.3.9 on the new 80gb HD and also swapping out the old CD-ROM and replacing with the (Apple standard) Pioneer DVD-RW DVR-110D combo drive in it's place. got everything up and booted and poof! no burning. Toast worked read/write no problem. iTunes could read and import no problem, but wouldn't burn a CD.
Downloaded "PatchBurn 3.1.3" installed, re-booted and all is OK in burner land again :>)
I wanted to just post my additional thanks to the lead to Patchburner, and I'm going to donate to the cause. It's worth a $20 donation just for my joy of not throwing this computer out the window!!
