IPod does not show up in iTunes or My Computer when its plugged in

I've tried several iPods (all 5th gen 30gig) on my system. The first one I tried worked fine (but sadly wasn't mine!), but none of the others tried since have ever worked, even though they work on other systems.
The problem is that when I plug the iPod in neither iTunes nor My Computer sees the iPod. The PC knows it's there because the iPod shows up under "Other Devices" in Device Manager. (On a system where the iPod is working properly it shows up as a Disk Drive in Device Manager, by the way.)
I've tried all the fixes on the Apple support site, working my way through the relevant piece (61711) on the Apple knowledge base. I've also upgraded to iTunes 7 and read the new stuff on similar problems encountered by some people upgrading and tried the fix just posted on the front page of the Apple support site but it didn't work (I got this problem long before upgrading to v7, so I guess it wasn't aimed at my issue.)
Any ideas?
Oh and I ran the iTunes diagnostics tool and it generated all this stuff below, which might be relevant - who knows?

  • Help - iPod does not show up in iTunes or as disk in Windows Explorer

Would someone PLEASE tell me how to get my iPod to show up in iTunes or as disk in Windows Explorer?
According to our PC XP computers, we do not have an ipod and it won't charge when plugged into USB. It worked fine for 10 months until this morning (10/26/06). We have ruled out bad USB drive by using flash drive on that USB and it worked fine. Reseting ipod does not work (ipod does not respond to reset command hold toggle then hold menu + play for up to 10 sec). Reseting ipod within ipod menu does nothing. ANY suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated!
    Thanks.

I have the same problem with my brand new 2 GB. I have reloaded software, gone through the "5 R's", tried the ipod on my PC and on my laptop -- neither computer recognizes or charges the ipod. Any info greatly appreciated.

  • My classical iPod does not shows in my itunes

iIt does not show in itunes so I cant reset it

You dont need iTunes to Reset your iPod, just do the following.
After charging till full charge, at least 2 hours (preferably 4 hours)
Toggle the Hold switch, make sure you dont see the red mark when you do the  next step
Reset the iPod -> Press Menu and Center button simultaneously for about 10 secs or till the Apple Logo comes ON
    Then release the buttons
    Select your preferred language.
Here is the Apple support Article on the 5Rs

However, if you mean Restoring your iPod, it is another matter, which you need iTunes and some troubleshooting to find out why you cant connect to iTunes.

  • IPod does not show up in itunes or windows

I've been through all relevant troubleshooting pages and I still can't get my 4th Gen ipod to show up on my computer or itunes. I have managed to install a driver, so the device manager recognises there is an ipod fitted.
Is it because I have WIndows Vista? I've checked that its fully upto date.
    Please help, its highly frustrating.

I need help with this as well. (Of course, like the others, I have also checked the various support pages and googled the problem to no avail.)
Basically, I want to connect my ipod to my work computer so I can charge it while listening to music. I did not have trouble with it in the past (I was able to connect it without itunes, ipod would charge once plugged in to a usb port - it showed charging "do not disconnect" message; I could also charge it while listening by ejecting it through windows - right clicking the ipod drive listed and selecting eject) and it's connecting to my co-worker's computer just fine! So I think it's a usb problem on my computer but i have no clue as to what to do... >_<
When I got to work today and plugged my ipod into my computer, it mysteriously did not show up under the windows explorer as a drive so I could not eject it as normal to charge and listen. Originally, this morning it did JUST charge (plugged ipod in and "do not disconnect" message appeared), but after I fiddled around and selected to stop device under the device manager it would not connect again. So now it is not even connecting to charge.
I've tried installing itunes, rebooting various times, resetting my ipod, turning it into disk mode, changing it back... - all nothing.
Although...when it changed from disk mode back to regular ipod mode and I plugged it into the usb drive it did charge for a while (as if it was on aka i could play music; it didn't show the "do not disconnect" screen), but when I touched the click wheel it stopped charging!!!
this is very frustrating so any help would be appreciated

  • My ipod does not show up on itunes.  Like it is not plugged in.  It has a good connection.  I have tried all the trouble shooting steps.  Uninstalling all apple itunes, bonjour, quick time, etc. and still shows no device!

The ipod icon does not appear on itunes. I followed all the troubleshooting  help.  Uninstalling all programs related to ituens and itunes.  veryifying uninstall restarting  computer, installing again.  I bought this ipod at a thrift store.  BUT IT WAS BRAND NEW in the package, never opened. checking serial number on apple they want a fee of 19.00 to give me help!  I paid 40 for the ipod so not worth it.  but if anyone has an idea for how I can get this to work.  Pleaseeeee

  • Older iPod does not show up in iTunes in OSX 10.9.5

I have an old iPod. The thin bright green with a one color screen, and the white circle dial on the front. I can't seem to get it fully charged or to show in iTunes. When I plug it in, a very faint white apple shows on the iPod screen. I tried connecting to iTunes and it is not recognized. Any suggestions, or is the iPod just too old?

  • No Nano - does not show up in ITunes or MY Computer

I'm new to the IPOD and have had the Nano 1 week of which I spent 6 days trying to figure out why it wouldn't show up in ITunes.
Solution - Eliminated extra drive assignments. I had used all the drive letter assignments from E: up to T: and had to remove the E: assignment so the Nano could use it.
More info - The first time I plugged the Nano in it worked great. I loaded music onto it that I had previously stored and was able to listen and play it.
So I decided to add more music from my CD collection.
I removed the 3.5" floppy drive from the laptop and inserted the CD reader.
!! That was the critical change because now the CD reader became D: drive which the Ipod had been using previously (I'm assuming, I never actually checked until it wouldn't work).
After that I spent days trying to figure out why the Nano would no longer show up in ITunes. See details below:
    What I've Tried:
    1st Use:
    Windows XP 2002 SP1
    Had Itunes already on PC
Charged Nano for a few hours until battery indicated full charge
Plugged in 1st time, loaded Nano with tunes, no issues.
    Played music for awhile
    2nd Use:
Swapped 3.5" Floppy drive for CD ROM drive
    Added more music from CD's
    Plugged in Nano
    ITunes opens up automatically
    Nano not shown in ITunes
Nano not shown on My Computer
Checked USB H/W configuration - shows IPOD connected
Nano is charging, indicates "Do Not Disconnect"
    Disconnect Nano
    Shut down, Restart PC
    Reconnect Nano
    No change - no Nano
Swapped USB Ports, no change - no Nano
    Disconnect Nano
    Reset Nano
    Reconnect Nano
    No change - no Nano
    Disconnect Nano
    Remove Itunes
    Reload Itunes from CD-ROM,
Connect Nano when prompted by installation program but apparently doesn't recognize Nano is connected
Installation gets stuck (45+ min) trying to "Format" Nano (Nano doesn't respond)
Skip to next part of installation
    Shutdown, Restart PC
    Reconnect Nano
    No change - no Nano
    Disconnect Nano
    Remove Itunes
    Reload Itunes from CD-ROM
Installation gets stuck again trying to "Format" Nano (Nano doesn't respond)
Skip to next part of installation
Set USB Drivers configuration to not disable power to USB port
    Shutdown, Restart PC
    Reconnect Nano
    No change - no Nano
    Shutdown, Restart PC
    Remove Itunes
    Shutdown, Restart PC
    Reload Itunes from CD-ROM
Skip connecting Nano as part of installation
    Shutdown, Restart PC
Run Ipod Updater 2005-09-06 program before plugging in Nano
    Connect Nano
    Restore software on Nano
    Nano Restores itself
    Nano indicates "Do not Disconnnect"
    ITunes opens up automatically
Nano still not shown in ITunes
Nano still not shown in My Computer
Checked System\hardware\device manager\USB Mass Storage Device indicates says "Location 0 (Ipod)" and device is working properly
    Unplug Nano
Swapped CD ROM with 3.5" Floppy drive
    Reboot PC
    Connect Nano
    Battery is already fully charged
Noticed little timer thingy in upper left of Nano spinning around, probably always did it but this is first time I noticed it.
    ITunes Opens
Nano still not shown in ITunes
Nano still not shown in My Computer
Nano shows up as USB Mass Storage Device under Safely Remove Hardware
Final solution - free up drive assignment E: so Nano can use it.

Glad you figured it out, but wow does that all make me glad I have a Mac!

  • 5th generation ipod does not show up on itunes

I have tried reinstalling itunes and the ipod hardware many times but there is still the same problem. The ipod showed up once before but since that time itunes has not recognized the ipod as being connected to the computer. Is there something wrong with my usb port??

I have bumped into this problem as well, check the following things:
    - Do you have a USB 2.0?
    - Is there any device conflicting with the drive which is designed to iPod? For instance, I had my iPod ben put under C:\. Apparently iTunes thought that was my harddisk. In Control Panel> Computer Management you can change the name of your drivers. Call iPod M:\ or something.
Doesn't this work? Apple has a Troubleshooter on its website called "iPod recognised in Windows, not recognised in iTunes" or something like that (easy to find). Good luck!

  • Itunes freezes when connecting and ipod does not show up

When I connect my nano 3rd gen in windows vista using itunes 9 my ipod does not show up and itunes freezes. the ipod remains with the connected screen and I cannot close out of itunes. Any help would be wonderful... Thanks!!

I have (finally)solved the problem with my iTunes freezing! Here's what I did:
1.I backed up my entire music library to an external hard drive.
2.Then I completely uninstalled iTunes 9 from my computer.
3.After a re-boot I then completely deleted my entire music library. (this can be a little scary so I double checked my music library back up on the external drive)
4.I Googled iTunes 8 and found it at
    http://www.mydigitallife.info/2009/06/28/apple-itunes-8-2-and-quicktime-7-6-2-di rect-download-links/
    5. I downloaded it but before I installed it I copied my music library back to my computer. I did not copy everything that was in my original iTunes music folder however, I only copied the music, album art work, applications, games,Tv shoes, and podcasts folders. I placed those folders in a new folder called iTunes on my computer. I did not include any of the iTunes database files eg: .itl / .xml / or .itdb files as these were created in iTunes 9.
    6. Now I opened iTunes 8.2 and added all of my music and other media content.
    7. Next I attached my iPod nano to my computer. Then Windows automaticly open a window asking me if I wanted to scan for problems or continue without scanning. I had windows scan for problems and once that was done my iPod nano began to sync. Oh what joy!
I think, and this is only a guess based on what I've read here on Apple's discussion pages and my own experience, that there is a problem/conflict or bug with iTunes 9, Windows Vista and the 3rd -4th generation iPod. I will NOT be upgrading to iTunes 9 until Apple has addressed this issue. It seems to me that there are a lot of people having similar issues.
