Ipod library help.

My computer crashed with my existing library on it. I just bought a new computer downloaded itunes and currently, Im trying to move all my songs from my existing library on my ipod over to my new library. I just dont know how or if I could do it. If I could get any help with this problem, it would be much appreciated.

The ipod is not a storage/backup device.  The sync is one way - computer to ipod.  The exception is itunes purchases: File>Devices>Transfer Purchases
It has always beenv ery basic to always maintain a backupi copy of your computer for this very occasion.  Use your backup copy to put everything on your new computer.

  • I think i erased the ipod library - HELP

So I borrowed my sister's ipod (20 GB - 4th gen, I think) and wanted to add my library to it. She gave me EVERYTHING that came with it, and being a good sister, I saw the label on the CD sleeve that said "Install software before connecting ipod." So, I did. Now it acts like I'm the owner and the library is wiped out. Can it be retrieved???

If it is set to automatically update then her original songs will be reloaded from her iTunes when she connects it back to her own PC.
    For info:
The iPod offers three ways to transfer music from your computer. You can select one of the following update modes from the iPod Preferences menu in iTunes (Edit=>Preferences=>'iPod' tab):
    1) Automatically update all songs and playlists. This is the default mode, in which your entire music library, including playlists, is automatically synced to your iPod. If the music library on your computer exceeds the iPod storage capacity, you are prompted to select a different update method.
    2) Automatically update selected playlists only. With this option, iTunes automatically copies the playlists you have selected to the iPod when you connect it to the computer.
    3) Manually manage songs and playlists. You can also choose to transfer music to the iPod manually. This allows you to drag and drop individual songs and playlists from iTunes to the iPod.

The transfer of content from other sources such as songs imported from CD is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod. You'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos, s and games as well. Have a look at the web pages and documentation, this is just a small selection of what's available, they are generally quite straightforward. You can also read reviews of some of them here: Wired News - Rescue Your Stranded Tunes

There is also a manual method of accessing the iPod's hard drive and copying songs back to iTunes on Windows or a Mac. The procedure is a bit involved and won't recover playlists but if you're interested it's available at this link: Two-way Street: Moving Music Off the iPod.
Sorry...but Zevoneer's links in the original post didn't transfer in the copy and paste. Hopefully this and a little Googling will get you there. But it can be done. If you have more questions, post back and I'll try to help.

  • Internal Hard Drive Full - Want To transfer my iPod library to external HD

I have a 60GB iPod and my desktop's hard drive is full therby preventing me from downloading anymore to my iPod. I have a 300GB external hard drive that I want to move everything to, especially my iPod Library. HELP!! How do I do it?

    Check out the instructions/suggestions here.
Music from iPod to computer (using option 2).
There's also another method. I've successfully tested this across several different Windows PCs.
Open iTunes and select edit/preferences/advanced/general. Put a check mark in the box marked "copy files to iTunes music folder when adding to library" and also "keep iTunes music folder organized", then click 'ok'.
Connect the iPod whilst holding down the shift/ctrl keys to prevent any auto sync, and if you see the dialogue window asking if you want to sync to this itunes library, click 'no'.
Then go to file/add folder, open 'my computer', select your iPod and click 'ok'.
The music files should transfer to your iTunes.
If this doesn't work (and it may not because officially it's not supposed to), there's Yamipod. This is a free program that transfers music and playlists etc from iPod back to the computer. However, it does not transfer playcounts/ratings etc.
The above methods may depend on what version of iTunes you are running.
If none of these methods work, try CopyPod. This does preserve playlists/playcounts/ratings.
If you are using iTunes version 7 or later, then you can transfer purchased iTunes store music from the iPod to an authorized computer by using the "file/transfer purchases from iPod" menu. Note that the maximum of 5 authorized computers applies here.

  • One song is not syncing with ipod touch - help!

it has synced the other songs I downloaded, but this one will not sync even though it is checked to sync, and appears in the playlist in iTunes. I've reset the iPod to no avail... it's an ipod touch 2nd gen.  I've also removed and re-synced the entire playlist and it simply will not put this one track on the iPod.  HELP!

I am having the same problem as well.  One song, purchased from iTunes, will not sync to my iPod touch.  It was on it last week, now it is not there.  When I plug the iPod into my PC, the song is in my library and it shows it in the iPod playlist when connected to iTunes...but it is no where to be found on the iPod.  I have tried to delete it from the playlist, and put it back in the playlist and re-sync, but it still is not there.  It plays on my PC in iTunes.  Any ideas out there for this one song issue?  Thanks all.

  • 5G iPod- Can't access my iPod library in iTunes

Help! I can see the songs on my ipod library but I can't access them. I can't put videos into my library, but my video podcast manage to find there way into it. What am I doing wrong? i've installed the newest update and reset the ipod, but no luck... any suggestions? thanks... it's driving me crazy...

We now have the same problem. From our iMac we can see our PC's iTunes library, but cannot load it; the progress bar runs indefinitely. The PC, however, can see the iTunes library on the iMac. This used to work.

  • Bluetooth and iPod library

Im having an issue with my iPod library going to my head unit in my truck. It will play the music through Bluetooth but will not send the library so I cannot browse using the head unit. It's a jvc avx740 and the manufacturer says that the unit is compatible with the phone and this should happen for me.  I need some help if there's any to be had...My iPhone is a 4 with ios 5.0.1

Kilted - I can control the play and pause and previous and next functions through the head unit, the iPod library is not accessible through Bluetooth. If I want to change artists or playlists I need to get my phone out and do it there.
Rudegar - the head unit says that it supports avrcp 1.3 and that the iPhone should be able to do this. I have followed their suggested instructions without any success
Hope that helps explain a little better where I'm at...

  • Is this possible to do - see iPod library side by side with iTunes library?

This is my first time posting on the forum but I have not seen any answers to what I really am looking for.
My ipod is in manual mode. There are songs on my ipod that are not in my itunes library. I recently added album artwork for most of the music in my itunes library. I want to 1) compare the songs that are in my itunes library versus my ipod library (side by side if possible) 2) easily update the songs with new artwork to my ipod without having to manually do this.
If I put the ipod on autosync I will lose some of my songs, although this is obviously the easiest way possible. I do have ipodcopy software, that's why a side by side comparision would be good to check to see which songs I need to add to itunes library.
I recently downloaded iTunes 7 and updated the firmware on my ipod.
I appreciate any help someone can give. Thanks.
    Compaq Presario   Windows XP

i managed to come pretty close to it, but it was pretty awkward.
first i cranked my screen resolution in my display properties up as high as it would go. i launched itunes, and plugged in attractive beast.
to get a second winow showing all the music on attractive beast, i clicked that triangle next to her on the source list. when it pointed down, i doubleclicked on the "Music" that showed up beneath her. that launched a second window with all her music in it. i shrank that window down as far as it would go.
i went back to the first window, and selected the "Music" that showed up under "LIBRARY" in the sourcelist. i shrank that display down as far as it would go.
i arranged them on the desktop, and ended up with what you see in the following screenshot:
    two windows
afraid it's not quite side by side, though.

  • You have 2 ipods, please help

you have 2 ipods, please help
Hi, I have just bought another ipod, I have now a 60GB video ipod and a new 8GB ipod. Does it pose any problem when synchronising ? Can they have different names ? Thks

You can name your iPod whatever you like. If you are connecting a second iPod for your own use, just connect it to your computer and it will update from your existing library. Depending on the size of your library and the type of iPod you choose you can have it update the whole library, selected playlists or you can manage it manually.
When using a small capacity iPod like the Nano with a large library, you can choose the update option "automatically update selected playlists only" (called Sync Music - All songs and Playlists in iTunes 7). This would allow you to create a playlist specifically for your Nano and drag the tracks you want into it. If you tire of the list and want to change it, you just add or remove the songs you don't want. The ones you take out out remain in the library to be used by the other iPod. Make your playlist a Smart playlist and limit the size to just below the advertised capacity of your iPod Nano (around 3700MB for a 4GB or 1800MB for a 2GB). You can read more about playlists at these links:
iTunes: Creating playlists of your favorite songs
