IPod sometimes recognized, never updates songs

For the past few days I've tried to update my iPod. The first few times I tried it said I needed to update my iPod with the iPod updater. But the program froze when I tried. I went online and it said to reinstall iTunes and the updater. I did that. Sometimes the computer won't recognize iPod, sometimes it pops up with the updater thing again. One time it gave me the internal error message but when I restarted the computer and tried again, the computer didn't recognize iPod. I'm really sick of asking for help everytime I update my iPod but could somebody please tell me why on Earth this thing refuses to work?

Yeah I have been having the same trouble, but I have not been able to figure it out either. I am not the only one that I know of with this problem. I know of about 7 other people with this exact same problem. I am thinking that there must be an error with the new itunes or the new ipod updater. I am going to try to put the old software on the PC and on the ipod... I will keep you updated if it works.

  • Ipod not recognized by updater/itunes

I've gone through all the steps listed on the help pages. I've done as many of the 5 r's as I can. I just got a video ipod last weekend. I have the latest updates on itunes and ipod updater. I know the ports arent the problems because when I plug in my old ipod the updater reads it. The ipod shows up under my computer, it just doesn't register with itunes. If anyone can help me with this it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

    Hello,
I guess no one knew anything about this, but I have some things you can do, and hopefully this info will help:
Format your iPod via "My Computer":
    Go to "My Computer".
    Right-click your iPod there.
    Click on "Format".
Does the iPod format correctly? Check if it works after this.
Format your iPod via "Control Panel":
Windows users: If you are not able to restore the iPod, you can try to format it:
    Open Control Panel
Click the "switch to classic view" link, if necessary
    Double click "administrative tools"
    Double click "computer management"
Under "storage" click on "disk management"
    Find your iPod's listing
Right-click on it and click "format"
Select "FAT32" and start the format
    Also, check this out:
iPod shows up in Windows but not in iTunes.
I think this will help some, or maybe solve your problem!

  • IPod not recognized -- an UPDATE (note iPod HP users)

After nearly 3 months, I'm finally listening to an iPod again!
First of all, let me offer MUCH THANKS to HP. They were efficient, courteous, and timely in helping me with this problem. Do you have an HP iPod? I bought mine at costco a few months ago, didn't even realize it was associated with HP until I looked on the back of the iPod. If you do, and it is still under warranty, YOU ARE IN LUCK. I got on the hp website, looked under support, found my ipod, and emailed the support representative with my problem (see original post below). Within a few hours of exchanging emails, they had walked me through a "hard drive scan" on the ipod and determined it was faulty. Sent me a pre-paid fed ex package and after a couple of weeks sent me a brand new iPod (same generation) that is now working great.
And to apple: thanks for making a great product that was a major advance in how people enjoy music and audibooks. I'M VERY DISSAPOINTED IN THE SUPPORT SERVICE FROM APPLE. I TRIED FOR MONTHS TO FOLLOW YOUR RECOMMENDATIONS, AND NO ONE OFFERED ANY HELPFUL ADVICE OR OFFERED FOR ME TO SEND IT IN FOR REPAIR. HP was literally giving me useful advice within minutes of my email, and took care of their customer. I find it ironic that HP recently broke ties with iTunes and iPod.

After this experience, apple deserves it.
    Originial post:
I post this message to add my name to the growing list of iPod owners who have the SAME PROBLEM -- namely when I plug in my less than 1 year old iPod into a powered 2.0 USB drive, neither Windows or iTunes can access the device.
Despite countless hours of resetting, retrying, restarting, reinstalling, and restoring; downloading the newest software for itunes and ipod updater; changing drive letters through my computer; and trying to reformat the device -- nothing works. As I type this message my ipod continues to do what it has done for the last week, flash "do not disconnect" over and over...

    Try this.

  • Ipod not recognized after updating software

    1. I returned my Ipod to Apple for battery service.
    2. After getting it back, I updated the software on my computer.
    3. When I plug in the Ipod, I get a message that the hardware did not install properly.
    4. The Ipod does not have an error message on itself.
    5. Itunes does not recognize the Ipod.
    6. I've reset the thing about 20 times.
    7. I'm about to throw the piece of crap away.

    Jim,
Press "select"+"play" keys and you will see the disk mode sign. plug it with your PC, open the iPod updater and click Restore. Try to use the USB behind the computer instead of the front.

okay, we'd better try enlisting some additional technical help then.
we'll get a crash log from itunes, and send it to so someone who can interpret crash logs. (it may take a few days before you get a response.)
Typically, you'll need to configure Dr. Watson on your PC in order to generate crash logs. Windows start menu -> Run. Type in "cmd". Hit return. At the prompt in the command line window that comes up, type in
    drwtsn32 -i
    And hit return.
This will create crash logs in Documents And Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\Dr Watson\. There'll usually be a file in here called "drwtsn32.log"
prior to collecting the itunes crash log, delete any existing crash logs in there. (we want to make sure we send the correct crash log.)
generate the crash, collect the crash log, and send it to this email address
    in the email:
    (1) state the precise version number of itunes that you're using, the version number of your ipod updater, the software version on your ipod, and the model of ipod you're getting the crash with:
iPod: How to find software version
    Identifying different iPod models
    (2) include the URL to this thread so that the person who gets the email has some context, but also give as much information about the context of the crashing as you can.

  • IPOD not recognized/copying to disc failed: Toshiba Laptop USB the issue!

Just got my IPOD back from servicing (needed new battery). While syncing, every 20 or 30 songs a message appeared: Attempting to copy to the disk failed...
I kept trying, but eventually Itunes (and Windows) wouldn't even recognize the IPOD (even the IPOD gave up...would flash the "do not disconnect" for a few seconds then immediately default back to default mode (menus, etc.) I could not restore.
My symptoms seemed to be similar to lots of other problems I saw in the discussion boards. THEN...I somehow linked to this file:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=300836
I had to use my Toshiba laptop's Device Manager to disable the "enhanced" speed USB port. Presto! Immediately the IPOD was recognized and updated FULLY (albeit at very slow speed). (2 hours for 850 tunes). What I don't understand is why this suddenly started to happen? HOPE THIS HELPS SOMEONE !

  • Library Lost - Please HeIp I tried updating my old ipod & now all 10,000 songs in my library have an ! next to them and I get the error message "song " " could not be used because the original file could not be found" on every song I try to play

Please help - this morning I tried updating one of my old ipods for my wife (this ipod hasn't been updated in 2-3 years).  I plugged it into my pc, it was recognized and the software updated.  I created a new playlist and tied to sync the ipod.  This ipod had never been used on this pc/itunes since the pc is only 2 years old.  When I tried to sync the ipod it stated that it would have to erase all the old songs on the ipod prior to syncing.  I clicked ok and it proceeded to wipe out the old ipod and sync the new playlist (~1000 songs).  When the sync was complete there were only 6 songs from the new playlist (all purchased this morning from itunes) on the ipod and to my horror all ~10,000 song on my pc in itunes now have a ! next to them.  Only my recent purchases from itunes do not.  When I click on a song with the ! I get the error message "the song " " could not be used because the original file could not be found."  How do I correct this issue - I am scared to hook my ipads or other ipods to my pc for fear of losing everything?!?!?  I spent 100s of hours burning the 10,000 songs from my cd collection and do not want to have to do it again.
    Any help is greatly appreciated.

This "original file cannot be found" thing happens if the file is no longer where iTunes expects to find it. Possible causes are that you or some third party tool has moved, renamed or deleted the file, or that the drive it lives on has had a change of drive letter. It is also possible that iTunes has changed from expecting the files to be in the pre-iTunes 9 layout to post-iTunes 9 layout,or vice-versa, and so is looking in slightly the wrong place.
Select a track with an exclamation mark, use Ctrl-I to get info, then cancel when asked to try to locate the track. Look on the summary tab for the location that iTunes thinks the file should be. Now take a look around your hard drive(s). Hopefully you can locate the track in question. If a section of your library has simply been moved, or a drive letter has changed, it should be possible to reverse the actions.
Alternatively, as long as you can find a location holding the missing files, then you should be able to use my FindTracks script to reconnect them to iTunes .

  • My ipod mini won't update the songs anymore.

After updating the software per a prompt when I plugged in, my ipod won't transfer the songs over form itunes.
I have done a lot to try to fix this problem. What was happening is that when I connected the ipod (with the same USB that had always worked before) it suddenly decided not to add any of the new songs in my library.
    Useful info:
*I had it automatically update all songs
*The library wasn't bigger than the space on the Ipod
*The ipod would say that it was updating, and in itunes I could see it saying coping 1 of XX, 2 of XX etc. After a few minutes, it said all songs transfered and I went and sure enough, nothing on the ipod.
Things I did to try to fix the problem:
    *5 R's
    *Reinstall ipod software and itunes
    *change the drive name
*clear all songs out of library and update it so that no songs would exist and then try again (But all of the songs never cleared)
I would really appreciate anyone's help with this.
I have tried restoring, updating software, it's not the letter drive since the system recognizing it (it shows up in iturns) -- the real problem seems to be when I go to move songs over.
Now my entire ipod is empty and I can't get any songs to copy over.
    thanks, Michelle

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
First off, is everything updated? (Did you restore with the latest updater?)
    http://www.apple.com/ipod/download
    http://www.apple.com/itunes/download
Also, with the iPod connected and showing in iTunes have you ever tried going to file-->update iPod?
Finally, with the iPod connected go to edit-->preferences and click the iPod tab. Be sure that automatically update is selected, otherwise iTunes may be waiting for you to do something.

  • IPod is recognized by iTunes and computer, but wil not sync songs

iPod is recognized by iTunes and computer, but wil not sync songs. I have about 1400 songs and just got 40 more, and before I bought those 40 my iTunes was wiped out. I still had the files so my iTunes was filled up again. Now, when I connect my iPod to the computer it is recognized and then it says "do not disconnect" then after a few seconds it says "ipod update is complete- ok to disconnect". but it did not upload any songs. How can I make it work?

If your iPod shows up in Explorer under 'my computer' try changing the drive letter:
    -- Click on Start=>Control Panel=>Admin Tools=>Computer Management=>Disk Management
-- Right-Click on the iPod and select “change drive letter”
-- Choose something further along in the alphabet that is unused (Usually, “M”, “N”, “O” or something similar)
    -- Safely eject the iPod
    -- Reboot the PC
Then restore your iPod to factory settings.

  • "Songs on iPod 'jerm' cannot be updated because all of the playlists..."

I recently bought a 1GB iPod Nano from a dude on craigslist and I updated it once, but when I try to update it now a message comes up that reads:
"Songs on iPod 'jerm' cannot be updated because all of the playlists selected for updating no longer exist."
Also, when I updated it yesterday, it said that the iPod didn't have room for all of the songs on my iTunes...but I only have like 75 regular-length songs on there and the 1GB is supposed to hold 240. Anyone know what's up with that?
After it informed me of this last thing, it made me a playlist of a "selection" of songs from the iTunes and updated it with those.
I deleted that playlist today...may that be related to my first question?
All of this doesn't make sense. Can anyone shed a little light on the subject?
    Thanks
    Sony VAIO   Windows XP

I had this problem with my 4GB iPod nano and I tried everything that you said to try. I did accidentally delete the iPod Selection playlist and I tried to make a new smart playlist. When I did this I got an error message that said "The smart playlist contains one or more conditions which are empty of conflict with one another. This will result in never matching any item. Are you sure you want to save this playlist?" I tried to upload an old library onto my iTunes and it was successful, however, my iPod would still not sync. Do you know what i can do to fix this?
    thank you.

  • IPod Nano wont update songs!!!

Okay, when I plug my ipod nano into the USB port and my itunes pop up, the stage where my ipod would usually update itself is replaced with a popup window that says: Songs on "iPod Nano" cannot be updated because of all the playlists selected for updating no longer exist.
Yes, I have no playlists right now, for some reason in the past I deleted them all. But this problem has erased all the songs and things I have on my ipod and since it wont update my songs I cant seem to put them back in (this includes the burned ones and ones bought from the music store). I am totally confused on what to do, someone PLEASE help!!

I am experiencing, for the first time, a VERY similar issue; except I have MANY playlists, and, up until now, I have been able to selectively manage them on my iPod (2Gb iPod, 60Gb of music). Now, all of a sudden, I get the error that is quoted above, although I have already restored iPod twice, reinstalled iTunes once, as well as selected manual sync, and they all "crap-out" about 1/3 of the way thru the synch-job. Never before have I had any similar problems with my product. Please help.

  • Ipod won't sync certain songs after update to 5.1.1

I updated my ipod touch to version 5.1.1.  This included the addition of icloud to my system.  Since I have updated it, my ipod won't add certain songs from my itunes.  It's really weird how it just randomly selected songs to download.  I have songs in itunes that I purchased, as well as songs I imported from CD's.  Every song shows up on my ipod song list, however most are "gray" and won't allow me to select them to play.  (like they are not downloaded or something).  I have retored my ipod three times to see if that will allow all the songs to play on my ipod and it won't work.  Everytime I try to sync my ipod the fist song that tries to sync says "The file wasn't synced to the ipod because it cannot be read or written"......I have tried removing multiple songs and still get this message for every song. I did figure out that you can open the itunes store through the ipod and select "purchased".  You can then view songs that "aren't on the ipod" and manually download each individual song to the ipod, however, not only is this a pain in the *** and going to take forever since I have 1000+ songs and tv shows, but this still won't get all my own music added from CD's to my ipod. HELP! Any tips or solutions!! ( Also, I am a Mac user if that makes a difference)

After over TWO HOURS on the phone with apple support I still had no solution.  There were several songs that would freeze up my itunes, then I got the message "blah blah song" couldn't be transfered to the ipod because the file was unable to be read or written.  The tech and I came up with the solution to just delete every song that came up on. In the end, I had to individually add EVERY SINGLE SONG to my ipod one at a time.  If an error popped up I just deleted that song and made a note of it.  I had no issues with the songs I imported from CD's, only the songs purchased off itunes.  The tech never could figure out why.  We rebooted, wiped clean, reset, anything...you name it we tried.  We even moved everything to another computer to see if it was a computer issue, then we wiped my husband's ipod touch to see if it was a hardware issue on my ipod. NOTHING. This finally worked even though it took all day.  Everything seems okay now, we will see the next time I add songs.  I did lose ALL my photos and videos taken with the ipod. :/ That really ***** because I have a 1 year old who's entire first year was on that stupid thing.  What a waste of a day.

  • Ipod resets sometimes when playing lossless songs

My Ipod sometimes resets or skips part of song when I play lossless stereo songs (imported through Itunes from original CD). The strange thing is that I can play the same song just fine after the reset again. I have noticed some pople have problem with mono recordings but haven't found any also for lossless stereo. The ipod is updated to latest software version. Any ideas?

I'm having the same problem with Apple lossless on both of my iPods (5g 60GB and 2G 4GB mini, green). Oddly, the resets occur at the beginning of certain songs on the mini and at the end of certain songs on the video.
The problem songs are consistent within each iPod, but not between the two. I thought it might be an issue with gapless playback, but only one of the albums whose songs are giving me problems is set to gapless.
