  • Ipod with sad face and will not stay in disk mode but hdd works

    Hi,
I've got a problem with my ipod and i've tried everything to fix it and nothing works.
So basically after my ipod gave me the sad face I tried putting it into disk mode and that worked successfully! However after I plugged it to my computer, it would (after a few moments and windows detects something being plugged in) it resets itself and gives me the sad face again and following that a sign comes up saying Please Wait Very Low Battery.
I know its not a low battery problem since during disk mode the battery is full.
Other strange things is that in Diagnostics mode the HDSpecs section just shows just a bunch on meaningless characters and numbers for each of the specs listed. I thought that this may have just meant I had a broken harddrive so i got one of those ipod harddrive to IDE converters and plugged by ipod harddrive in (yes i now have opened the ipod). Strangely enough the ipod hard drive appears on my computer and works beautifully and i can read and write to the drive.
I went though the forums and found someone with the exact same problem and was solved:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=7244984&#7244984
However the person never said how they solved it except that they followed the guide posted by Mitch 751 which I also tried to no success.
Does anyone have any ideas what else I can try?
    Cheers,
    Victor

  • Frozen ipod with sad face

when i push the menu button i get the sad face w/ exclamation point. i've tried to follow all steps except restoring the ipod. what can i do from here?

Or you can try to do step 9
    1. Try these five steps (known as the five Rs) will conquer most iPod issues.
    http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/five_rs/
    2. Try to put the iPod into Disk Mode if it fails to appear on the desktop
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93651
    Still can't see your iPod?
Several things could keep iPod from appearing in iTunes or in the Desktop/Finder when you connect it to your PC/Mac. The most likely causes are listed below in logical order. Check each one starting from the top of the list to see if that is what's keeping iPod from appearing.
    3. Try to wait 30 minutes while iPod is charging.
    4. Try another known-good FireWire or USB through Dock Connector cable.
    5. Try another known-good FireWire or USB port on your computer .
    6. Try to disconnect all devices from your computer's FireWire and USB ports.
    7. Try to connect on a different computer i.e. a PC formatted iPod connect with a Mac computer or Mac formatted iPod with a Window base PC.
    8. Try to do a Erase (Disk Utility) on a Mac computer or a reformat with a PC (Disk Management tool) but ensure you choose the right Drive (your iPod not your Hard Disk of your computer).
    9. Try to run the iPod in “Diagnostic mode” . which can be accessed by pushing the “hold” switch into the “on” position and then “off” (into the original position). Then press the following buttons in the following order: “menu” plus “select” (centre button) then press “reverse” plus “select”. This will take you to the hidden diagnostic mode screen menu. It may take a few trials and pressing the buttons in the right way for this to work, so be patient and keep trying if you have to. The diagnostic mode will give you 7 choices which are: Memory, IO, Power, Status, SysCfg, Diskmode, and Reset. Don’t bother trying “reset” because in my case it didn’t work it just took me back to the same problem. Instead, choose “diskmode”, after which you should get an odd looking “ok to disconnect” sign on the iPod screen.
If one of the above step helps to get your iPod to be recognized with your computer, do a Restore.
But, if none of these steps address the issue, your iPod may need to be repaired. You can arrange for service at the iPod Service Website.
I strongly suggest that you should find a Mac computer and do a Restore there, your iPod is likely to get recongized in this way.

  • My Ipod nano 6th gen shows a white screen with sad face

    Hi
My ipod nano is showing me a white screen with a sad face on it
I tried to reset it but with no use, everytime it resets, it returns back to the sad face
and itunes won't recognize the device
this is a picture of the screen
    any help please

While the nano is connected to your computer and iTunes is open, hold down the volume up, volume down and sleep/wake button at the same time until iTunes brings up a dialog then release the buttons.
The dialog should walk you through 'recovering' the nano. See if that does it for you.
    Has it gotten wet?

  • IPod classic 5th gen. with sad face goes into disk mode but wont register in itunes

I have an iPod classic 5th gen. A while ago it stopped working and the sad faced iPod started showing up. i've tried putting it into disk mode but when i do it wont pop up into itunes like it should and as soon as i unplug it the sad face appears again. is there anyway to fix it or is it done?

There is a pretty comprehensive post written by another forum member which is about the sad iPod icon. You may find it useful.
The Sad iPod/folder and ! icon.
Btw, there's no such thing as a "4th generation 20gb classic." Your iPod is a 4th gen and not an iPod classic which is a completely different model.

  • Got new ipod mini, wont charge! Shows ipod w/sad face

I just bought a 4GB ipod mini. Whenever I charge it [i use the charger on the "iHome" dock] it first shows the apple logo, then after a few seconds it shows the little ipod with a sad face, and it says "apple.com/support/ipod" then after displaying that for a few seconds, a little picture of a battery and an exclamation point next to it flashes really fast, then it repeats the whole thing over again. I have never used it before that is why i am worried!! has this happened to anyone else?? I know that it isnt the iHome charger because my sister has used it on her mini ipod and it worked perfectly!

AH! sorry wrong section to post it in!

  • IPod 5g, sad face BUT boots into disk mode

Hey everybody, I have a iPod that my uncle brought me, he says it's his sons, but he doesn't need it. This ipod boots with apple logo, hdd making clicky sound, and then a sad face appears for about 4 seconds and shuts down. If I try holding center and play buttons, it does boot into disk mode, but before that it says that I have to connect it to the computer to restore it, but itunes doesn't recognize it. But computer does. is there any way to fix it?

The Sad face icon is usually a very good indication of a hardware malfunction or failure usually with the iPod's Hard Drive, which would also explain the loud clicking noise you are hearing.

  • Hd replacement with sad face 'pod

if i replace the hard drive on an ipod that displays a sad face with a hard drive that i know is in proper working order, will the sad face go away?
    thanks

Thanks for the feedback, dwb. You reminded me that replacing the iMac's drive is a painful process, and maybe it's not a good project. After reading your post, I went to a well known website which lists compatible upgrades for the different Mac models, and SSD's are not proposed as options for those early Intel iMacs. There is perhaps a compatibility or no real benefit issue.
Another solution to explore would be in a external SSD for scratch, ideally interfaced with FW800 | USB3 or Thunderbolt, so I could use it now in FW800 mode, and on the next machine on either other connector. There is for instance a Rugged SSD, but only Thunderbolt | USB 3.0. And there is a Rugged Triple USB 3.0 | USB 2.0 | FireWire 800, but only drives and no SSD option. Again, maybe the SSDs are too recent technology to  be dealt with by SL on that old iMac, I have to find out.

  • IPod Mini - sad face! "Loaner" iPod?

OK...so I got the sad face, and tried everything the website suggests. I took it to the Apple store and it appears that I'll have to send it in. What I'm wondering is if I borrow an iPod from a friend and load my music, can he then turn around and re-load his library from his computer? Does that make sense?
I REALLY cannot live without my iPod!!!

Yes, he can simply plug it into his computer and put his music back on it.

What does this picture on my iPod mean?
Also, there is a pretty comprehensive post written by another forum member which is about the sad iPod icon. Be aware that it's quite involved and contains some info that will almost certainly void the warranty. If your iPod is still within the warranty period, you should use that option first.

  • Ipod has sad face

ipod has a sad face how do you reset

just go into itunes and click on your ipod then click restore - you might be able to fix it without reseting it though (this won't clear all your data off) toggle the hold switch on and off, then press and hold the centre button for 6secs - then the apple logo should come up. if this doesn't work just restore it on your pc. pls put this as correct answer
