IQ504 hard drive fail, windows wont install!

I finally had my HD fail. Vista home premium 64 bit. I purchased new HD and bought discs from HP. It gets almost to the end of installing windows and then says "windows setup cannot configure windows to run on this computers hardware". I have called Microsoft and HP. Microsoft says the discs won't install the OS, HP says its a motherboard issue. Will a clean install with a new OS disk work? I'm thinking of just purchasing a new OS for the computer, or will the "tattoo" of the motherboard prevent this? How do I check the motherboard? Anyone have any ideas where to go from here?

Hi:
Try this method to make your own Vista installation disk and use the product key on your PC to activate.
If you can read your 25 character MS product key, you can make your own Windows Vista installation disk. Just download the 3 files you need at the link below, and read all of the instructions to create a bootable DVD installation disk using imageburn.
Just disregard the part of the text under the first screen shot about extract the files to the Vista folder. The files were already extracted to that folder when you ran the X14.exe file by reading the test on top of the first screen shot.
The other thing I noticed is on the 4th screen shot, where it shows Developer ID Microsoft Corporation. I had to type Microsoft Corporation in myself, and then the other codes automatically populated.
When I went to compile the ISO file, ImageBurn gave a message that about a WIM file and ISO, and if I wanted to burn it in a different format.
I selected No, make the ISO file.
It was not that hard to do. I burned both the 64 bit disk and the 32 bit disk in case I ever need them.
I tested both of them (just short of going ahead with the actual install) and they appeared to work perfectly.
Apparently when you enter the product key, it knows what version of Vista you have.

After you successfully install vista, you can then visit your PC's support and driver page and install the drivers you need.

  • Hard Drive Failed, New one Installed, Problems of course

Hellooo Everyone This is sort of a last ditch effort to see if I can fix this myself or if I am going to have to shell out 500 dollars to get my laptop back in working order. So I have a HP dv6-6140 laptop. A few weeks ago the hard drive failed and I purchased and installed a new one, ran windows 7 and have it on my laptop. When I try to hook up an ethernet cable to download and install the drivers for the laptop the ethernet cable is not recognized it says no internet connection blah blah blah. Ok so I downloaded the drivers to a flash drive and installed some of them onto my laptop, no changes.  So I was thinking of purchasing the recovery discs which im assuming include the drivers for the notebook for 35 dollars which is paltry in comparison to what I would pay if I took it to a computer repair shop, but how do I know that would work? I dont. I am looking for ideas or anything that I may be missing. I am not computer illiterate but I am not an expert. Any advice would be greatly appreciated Thanks!
    Kelly

    Hi, Kelly:
On your model normally it is very important to install the chipset driver first and reboot before attempting to install the ethernet (wired network) driver.
The chipset drivers install some motherboard driver which I think enables the communication to the ethernet adapter.
The problem is, HP does not include the necessary chipset drivers for your model (which I assume is a HP Pavilion dv6-6140us Entertainment Notebook PC).
So...Download and install the AMD Chipset Drivers and reboot.  You want the first driver listed on the webpage.
    http://support.amd.com/en-us/download/chipset?os=Windows%207%20-%2064
Then see if the ethernet adapter works again or reinstall the ethernet driver after you reboot the PC.
The parts list indicates your model comes with a Broadcom wireless/bluetooth card.
Here are the links to the drivers you need for that...

  • Hard Drive failed- new one installed - won't boot - fans going full

I have a mac mini one of the earlier intels. I came home and the fans were going full on, I turned it off and treid to restart.. and got the empty folder. So I guessed it was the hard drive. Took it out and tested it on my enclosure - with disk utility - buggered.
So I installed another hard drive after I had installed the OS. As soon as I connected the powere cord the fans still going full on.
I still get the missing folder symbol.
I tried booting off a usb connected hard drive and it starts up.
    Any ideas?
I am guessing the hard drive has caused some other issue, can I do an internal reset?
Also, when I boot off the external hard drive and open disk utlity - I can see the other internel hard drive??
But it wont boot from it?
Appreciate any ideas... I have run out!!
    Thanks in advance

    AHA, just fan issue?
    Tukaine

Since the late 2009 iMacs came out, replacing the hard drive has caused the internal Hard Drive Fan to start running at around 6000RPM.
This is due to Apple replacing the external Hard Drive temperature sensor with a proprietary firmware and using the drives internal sensor.
Replacement drives do not contain the firmware to deliver temperature data on the temperature sensor cable.
When the iMac does not receive a good signal from the hard drive it puts the fan at full speed to protect the drive.
If you replace your drive, your iMac will initially seem fine, but soon the fan will begin to speed up to full speed. Resetting the SMC (System Management Controller) will have a temporary effect, but again the fan will speed up.
Fixes people have used in the past included:
Using smcFanControl and the terminal to set a MAX speed for the fan and writing scripts to start this after every sleep/restart.
Shorting the temperature sensor cable (Not a possibility on 2011 iMacs) this tricks the iMac into thinking the drives temperature is very low, hence slow fan speed.
Both these fixes are less then perfect and leave the drive in a dangerous situation with no protection from overheating.
Another option people try is other Fan Control software. These programs will not work for this particular issue as they often only control the base speed, and if they do control the fans actual speed they rely on the temperature reported by the sensor which is now incorrect.
    HDD Fan Control
HDD Fan Control works to fix this issue by reading the drives internal temperature using the S.M.A.R.T protocol and set the fans actual speed to a value good to protect the drive.
It runs at startup and continually to always control the fan correctly, prevent the loud fan noise and protect the drive from overheating
Instead of HDDFan Control, get the free SSDFan Control

  • I have a 27" imac (intel) my hard drive failed and I installed a new one. This is my first time dealing with this so I am having trouble re-installing the OS. Install disc spits out and ? mark with folder appears what am I missing?

Like the title says. My 1 TB drive failed and unfortunately my computer isn't covered on the replacement program even though my hard drive is the one they are claiming to replace. So that is not a solution just to get that out of the way. So I replaced the hard drive. What I am having trouble with is re-installing my OS. I have 10.6. When I load it and restart it just spits it out and I get the question mark folder. What am I doing wrong is there a step I'm missing? I did do a back up to my Time Machine before the crash. Can I plug it into it and reload format? I'm new to this so any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks!

Well, let's hope that nothing was jiggled out of place when you were installing the new hard drive. Your optical drive may just be out of alignment or the disc you have is "dirty." Get a lint-free cloth and some rubbing alcohol, then clean the disc as thoroughly as you can starting from the center and working outward in a concentric circlular motion. See if that helps. In particular clean the inner portion well.
If this does not help, then you have a problem. You have opened the computer yourself. That action voids all support from Apple. If you take the computer in for service the store may refuse to service the computer. This is not related to your now expired warranty.

  • Can I boot to an external hard drive with Windows OS installed on it to play games?

    Hello,
I am getting a Mac in the near future for work, and was wondering if it was possible to take my current PC's hard drive and connect it to the Mac with the high speed thunderbolt cable, then book to the external hard drive to play games in windows. In my research I have not seen much about this. I understand that BootCamp works, and am willing to do this, but with the new Macbook Pros that were released, there is very little storage space for two partitions.
    Any help would be great,
Also, I know that the performance would not be stunning, but my performance is already lacking because I only have AMD integrated graphics on my machine.
    Thanks

A virtual machine is a software system such as VMware Fusion or Parallels which provides a software environment within which a different operating system, such as Windows can run. The files which make up the virtual machine itself (e.g., where Windows and any Windows based software, such as Microsoft Office, reside) can be located on an internal or an external drive. Only the virtualizing program itself needs to be on the boot drive. The connection between an external drive on which the virtual machine files reside will be faster than the external drive itself if the connection is USB 3.0 or Thunderbolt because the speed of an external HD will be the limiting factor. If the external is an SSD, the connection used might make a difference. But a virtual machine will still be slower than a physical machine (i.e., computer) because  hardware is faster than the software emulation of it whether the hardware is Windows in BootCamp or a real PC, as BobTheFisherman says.
If you mean the new Retina MacBook Pro (Late 2013), the internal storage isn't a hard drive, it's an SSD on a PCIe bus. OWC, among other vendors, may one day develop an upgrade method as they have for the SSD's in earlier rMBP's but for now, what you order is what you get.

I had my hard drive cleaned and cannot install cs6 master collection from disk.  I am getting error message failed to initialize.  please download adobe advisor support.  I am using a pc and have windows 8.  Please help.

start at the top and work your way down applying applicable fixes until your problem is resolved.
    if cc (win):  https://helpx.adobe.com/creative-cloud/kb/creative-cloud-desktop-application-failed.html
    if, your error is:
"Installer failed to initialize. File not found." or "Installer failed to initialize. This could be due to missing files."
first, rename OOBE Folder to OOBE.old.
    to find OOBE:
64 bit win OS: Program Files x86\Common Files\Adobe\OOBE
32 bit win OS: Program Files \Common Files\Adobe\OOBE
    mac os: HD>library>application support>adobe>caps
    mac os: USER>library>application support>adobe>OOB
if that fails or isn't the exact error you see, uninstall, clean (http://www.adobe.com/support/contact/cscleanertool.html) and reinstall.
if you're using a dvd to install:
copy the disc contents to a desktop directory and install from that directory.
    if you're using a mac:
    1. Try to Create a new user account in Mac with Administrator Priviledges.
    2. Login to the New user, Navigate to Mac HD> Application> Utilities> Adobe Installer folder, Locate products like Adobe Reader, Adobe Flash, Adobe Air and un-install them
    3. Navigate to User Library> Application Support> Adobe and move Adobe to Trash.
    4. Navigate to Mac HD> Library> Application Support> Adobe and move Adobe to Trash.
    5. Start the installation again.
if everything applicable above fails, check your installation logs:

  • Hard drive failed, how can I reinstall Windows 7?

The hard drive failed on my dad's laptop.  Replacing it isn't a problem, but I'm not sure how to get Windows 7 back onto it.  His laptop came with it installed already and he doesn't have any backup discs.  Will HP send discs so that I can reinstall the OS?  I'd rather not have to buy a new OS.

  • Hard Drive Fail after install Photoshop CS6?

Hi! I downloaded Photoshop CS6 six days ago. Three days later my hard drive failed... and now can not find the installation. The repair put my system back to a previous time when the computer worked fine. Did this erase the install???
    Thanks,
    CeCe1019

What is your operating system & version?
If Windows, how was the system reset - by System Restore?  Or a complete restore from backup?
While a System Restore will leave the installed programs in your Program Files, all registry data and system files will have disappeared.  So either way you will have to reinstall.

  • Portege 3490, install new hard drive with windows xp ready loaded?

My hard drive failed recently on my portege 3490. I bought a replacement seagate 20gb hard drive. I installed Windows XP pro by connecting the drive (via adaptor) to my desktop and running the setup cd.
I thought I could then just fit the drive back into the Portege and be good to go. However when I turn on the system straight away asks me to insert system disk.
I have no floppy drive and my only cd is a usb drive and I cannot use this to boot.
Has anyone got any ideas how I can get this working?
I plugged the same drive into my other notebook (non Toshiba) and it boos straight away. Thanks for your help

    Hi
I have no real solution for you except that I can confirm that the ay you installed Windows and then moved the HDD is generally not a good idea.
In your case I think what is the primare problem is that the BIOS'es in the 2 different PC's look at the HDD in different ways. That means that even though both systems might say that it is a 20GB HDD they read it differently and therefore the 3490 gets only 'strange' data from the disk.
Even if it had been able to read the contents still it is not a good idea to do the installation this way because if the chipsets differ too much then Windows will not be able to boot due to wrong drivers.
    My suggestion is to
In the 3490 format the HDD with FAT32.
Once again attach the 20GB to the other system.
Copy the contents of the i386 folder of the Windows media to the HDD.
Put the HDD back in the 3490.
Boot up on a DOS/Win9X diskette and enter the I386 directory. Start the installation from there.
A little bit of fiddling but should give you no problem with boot up.
    Good luck
    Tom

  • My 5 year old iMac's hard drive is at the point of failing.  I'm trying to save al files on it, but it wont allow backup via Time Machine to an external hard drive.  How can I keep from losing all the files and programs if the hard drive fails?

I'm concerned that my iMac, purchased 5 years ago, is about the crash and I can't back up my files and programs to an external hard drive via Time Machine because the computer freezes after only a couple hundred MB and gets nowhere near the required amount.
How can I save these files and programs if the computer hard drive fails or has to be replaced without the backup being able to be done? I need to do something quickly, but I'm not sure what I can or should be doing.

Get an external hard drive, some good ones that I like are the OWC, http://www.macsales.com Mercury Elite Pro drives...they are very good and reasonably priced.
Get the drive, connect via USB or FireWire, then use Disk Utility to format the new drive as Mac OS X Extended (Journaled), and then use Disk Utility to Restore the current drive to the new drive.  Restore actually clones the drive so you will have a bootable backup on the external drive.
After you have formatted and named the external drive, click Restore in the main Disk Utility window, drag the name of the old hard drive to the Source box, and drag the name of the new external drive to the Destination box.  DU will make an exact clone of the internal drive on the external drive.
That clone will be a complete backup of the operating system and all of your data.
You can test it by restarting the iMac and hold the Option key.  That will give you a grey screen showing all bootable drives.  Just click the external drive, then click the upward pointing arrow under it and the iMac will boot from that drive.

When I start a backup. Time Machine says "Oldest Backup: None; Latest Backup: None", so it seems like it should do a complete backup, but it only does a partial.

  • New hard drive and cannot re-install Windows 7

    RE:  HP Pavillion DV7-4270us
             Windows 7 64-bit
4MB Ram   640 GB Hard Drive
After receiving the S.M.A.R.T. warning about possible hard drive failure soon, I installed a Seagate 500GB hard drive. Next I began the recovery process by using my rescue discs. All that went fine.
Then the screen stated that after the pc restarts it will load all software and drivers. It will turn off and on several times and this will be normal. Please do not shut down pc.
Now is where my problem began. It never loaded the software and drivers even after running for 7.5 hours. I new this was extreme.
I just noticed on this forum someone else had a similar issue. The reply said to be aware and not to install a smaller hard drive than you originally had.
I am assuming this is my problem also. If anyone knows for sure, please let me know. I suppose I will install a 1TB hard drive, even though that is more than I will ever need.
    Thank you!

    Hi:
That could be the issue, or the recovery disks you made won't work--even on a 1 TB hard drive.
Rather than tossing money into a new HDD, if you can read the 25 character product key on the bottom of your notebook, you can make your own plain W7 x64 installation media, which will install on any size hard drive.
Here is how to do that...
Link to the W7 ISO file downloads is below. Download the applicable version of Windows 7 that is on your product key (Home Premium, Pro, or Ultimate).  The SP1 Media Refresh files are the latest ISO files.
    http://forums.mydigitallife.info/threads/14709-Windows-7-Digital-River-direct-links-Multiple-Languag...
Use the Windows 7 USB/DVD installation tool to compile the ISO file you download from Digital River. Link  below. You need a DVD or a 4 GB flash drive to use the USB method of compilation.
Use the 25 character windows 7 product key to activate your installation.
    http://download.cnet.com/Windows-7-USB-DVD-Download-Tool/3000-18513_4-10972600.html
Then go to the PC's support and driver page to install the drivers you need.
Before you try the above, see if making this CD patch works for the factory recovery disks.
