Is a clean install really this hard?

Hi folks,
I installed Flexbuilder 2 over my existing Eclipse
installation, choosing the "plug-in" option rather than a complete
install. But I couldn't debug: it claimed I had to install
FlashPlayer 9 (yes, it was already installed and working) or
Flexbuilder needed re-installing. (I'm running Firefox 2.0.0.6 on
Windows XP, fully patched). I tried re-installing Flexbuilder but
the install process quit when it saw the existing installation. Due
to deadlines, I elected to make due with Alert.show() rather than
the integrated debugger. Man, does that slow you down!
But now the deadline has passed, and I have a few minutes to
uninstall and reinstall things. So I uninstalled flashplayer, the
flex plugin, elcipse (just by renaming the directory - it doesn't
seem to have any windows hooks). Then I reinstalled Flexbuilder,
using the Complete option rather than the plug-in option.
After spending 20 minutes trying to figure out how open an
existing project from a clean install (I couldn't find anything in
the docs on that), I'm now in a different mess. When I run the
project from within the IDE, it launches Firefox against the wrong
directory path - it seems to have an extra "/bin/" in the path.
Anyone know where I fix that?
I can repair the broken path in the web browser to get the
app running, but as soon as I do, I get this error message:
Error: Unable to load style(Error #2035: URL Not Found. URL:
blue.swf): blue.swf.

There are no references to blue.swf in my app so I really
have no idea where this is coming from.
It also can't find the debugger, and asks me if it's running
on the local machine or a remote machine. wtf? (Windows Firewall is
turned off). Doesn't matter what I say, it doesn't like it and I
have to hit the cancel button. Then my app comes up with missing
controls and assorted broken functionality.
I must say that my experience with this product is poor and
getting poorer. Can someone help me out of the corner I'm painted
into?
Many thanks,
ws
p.s. Typing long posts like this into such a small window is
also very annoying.

I removed the Flash player via Add/Remove programs, then
installed the debug version I downloaded from adobe. You didn't
indicate whether I had chosen the correct download (as per my last
post), so I'll assume it's correct. The message window from the
install said this:
Output folder: C:\Windows\system32\Macromed\Flash
Extract: NPSWF32.dll... 100%
Extract: NPSWF32_FlashUtil.exe... 100%
Extract: flashplayer.xpt... 100%
Created uninstaller:
C:\Windows\system32\Macromed\Flash\uninstall_plugin.exe
Completed
NPSWF32.dll landed in C:\Windows\system32\Macromed\Flash,
rather than Program Files\Mozilla\PlugIns, which is obviously
wrong. I copied it over, and that solved the bug about "can't find
npswf32.dll". Any idea why this gets installed in the wrong
directory? Is something else configured wrong?
With that somewhat solved, we're back to the first problem -
when the application launches, I get this message pop up:
Error: Unable to load style(Error #2035: URL Not Found. URL:
blue.swf): blue.swf.

And finally, and new error: "Send Failed". This error pops up
as soon as I try to do something with my app that calls the back
end (weborb) server. I pointed to a different server and got the
same error, so it's a problem on this client. This problem didn't
start until I uninstalled and re-installed everything this morning
(see my first post for details). Now this error is sooooo generic I
have no idea how to debug it. Along those lines, are you an Adobe
employee levancho? I'm wondering if you might be able to bring in
someone with a bit of weborb experience (although I doubt it's
related, since this worked fine on my previous install).
In case this helps, here's my .project file:

  • How to properly clean install: erase, partition hard drive, and install tiger then SL

    Hello,
I am a noob at this, so if responders would be kind enough to be detailed / specific with any instructions it would be most helpful! I own a dinosaur apparently (even though I don't think so): the white (not unibody) Intel macbook2,1 (late 2006) 1.83 GHz with currently 1GB of RAM, but I have 2x2GB RAM sitting next to me ready for install. However, first I would like to do a clean uninstall of my computer (running OS X 10.6.8 SL). I also would like to properly partition my hard drive while I'm at it.
About 6 months ago I had serious crashing issues, along with kernel panics, hangs, applications randomly appearing & disappearing, system settings and options doing the same, fans running high (probably due to the low RAM available), and basically overall screwiness. So, after trying pretty much every option I could find on this community...and many others... (e.g. clean cache, clean old logs, already did a clean uninstall and install of SL, and much much more) I have reached my wits end. I would say that to date I've wasted a good solid 2 months with this.
The clean install worked for MAYBE a month or so, but then it started acting up again with the fans (even without high pages in/out, CPU or memory usage) and excessive heat, along with the apps freezing and quitting (mind you it would be only two things open such as 1 word document and then firefox-- with flash disabeled). SOOOOOO long story short, I have purchased new RAM and I would like to try this once again, but to ensure I don't screw it up this time I would like some directions as to how to do the uninstall, partition, then reinstall. (currently to date I ensured all updates are completed---even though they are no longer released for SL, and I just did a full backup).
Also, I need to first install Tiger (my original OS) as when I went to do a hardware test the other day this was not an option (and upon further research it is due to me not using Tiger as a first install and then using my mac box set for SL). I didn't use my original OS first because....one issue encountered when I had tried to install Tiger was that my Disc 2 (the applications one) took around 1.5 hrs to complete, but when I reached the last step of glory where I expected it to say COMPLETE it instead said that there was some sort of issue with the disc..........of course).
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

1: If near a Apple Store or Authorized Repair, take it to then for a free evaluation, it might have other hardware problems now that it would be a waste of effort even continuing.
2: The RAM needs to be
    Maximum Memory
3.0 GB (Actual) 2.0 GB (Apple)
    Memory Slots
    2 - 200-pin PC2-5300 (667MHz) DDR2 SO-DIMM
Basically what this means is you can put in a 2GB module and a 1GB module for 3GB total.
I wouldn't proceed with installing RAM just yet, not until you get a stable OS X version on the machine, you might have a hard drive needing to be replaced as well which you can do while inserting new RAM.
3: This User Tip can assist in installing 10.6 Snow Leopard, partition format etc.
How to erase and install Snow Leopard 10.6
Software Update fully immediately after setup.
There is no need to install Tiger, he 10.6 disk contains the full 10.6 version, you can either install the iLife from Tiger disks or use Pacifist from Charlesoft to extract them and place on your new install, then Software update to get them current.
4: If not successful then the drive also likely needs to be replaced, if so choose a 7,200 RPM SATA I  w/1.5Gb/s connection.
Install/upgrade RAM or storage drive in Mac's
    Repeat #3
If your getting beeping noises or "you need to restart" issues, it's likely one or more of the RAM modules is bad. Have it exchanged or swapped.
I advise good quality RAM the first time, if you buy cheap stuff it's just going back.
Don't go any further than 10.6.8 with that old machine, the performance will be terrible.

  • Erased Hard Drive for Clean Install of Leopard, Hard drive is gone!

I put in my Leopard Install disk to do a clean install of everything as I was going to give this iMac to someone. I erased the hard drive and then started the Leopard install. It stopped half way through and that was that! Now the hard drive does not appear as my Macintosh HD anymore. When I open disc utility, it lists it as just a 150MB hard drive; no name, no volume. If I try to format it again, it says "resource busy". If I try to install Leopard, it just keeps looking for a drive to install it in. Bummer. Any ideas how I can get my hard drive to be recognized again? It is an iMac G5, 5 years old with no other problems before this. Thanks.

Try shutting down (powering off). Then start it up again using your Mac OS X installation disc, and run Disk Utility as you did before. This time, try going to the Partition tab (instead of using the Erase tab). Reset the +Volume Scheme+ to *1 Partition*, even if it already has only one partition. Click the Options button, and make sure it is set for *Apple Partition Map*. Name the volume +Macintosh HD+, set the Format to +Mac OS Extended (Journaled)+, and Apply.
See if that works any better.

  • Windows 8.1 clean install in GPT hard drive style without loosing the RECOVERY partition

Always i try format my windows partition, i get the following error:
Windows cannot be installed to this disk. The selected disk is of the GPT partition style.
So i would like a clean install Windows 8.1 without chnage the hard drive style or loose my RECOVERY partition.
Obs.: I just can perform boot after disabling UEFI and Secure Boot.
    This question was solved.

    @lucasc ,
Hello and thank you for posting on the HP support forums.  You will not be able to do this without damaging the recovery partition.  If you want to do a fresh install on your system use the system recovery.
If not you will install the operating system of your choice.  Before doing so make sure the notebook came with the operating system and you have supported drivers for the OS you want to install.
If not you may not be able to find supported drivers and end up with hardware issues.  The drivers are built for the notebook based on the OS that it was released with and they are proprietary.
I hope this helps.  Thank you again for posting and have a great day.
Please click the "Thumbs Up" on the bottom right of this post to say thank you if you appreciate the support I provide!
Also be sure to mark my post as “Accept as Solution" if you feel my post solved your issue, it will help others who face the same challenge find the same solution.

  • BSOD experience with CLEAN INSTALL on new hard drive...next step?

Much has been written about the BSOD experiences of those upgrading to Leopard and the conflict with third party software enhancements already on their Tiger system. And apparently those fixes are working for some. I may be in the minority, but I own a Mac Pro and have a boot drive for Tiger and a second boot drive, brand new and zeroed out, on which I installed Leopard.
When I go to start Leopard, I get either the BSOD or it will go one step further, bring me to the Leopard desktop, then hang...with a movable mouse but no functionality. In my case, since I am doing a fresh install with no Tiger software on the new hard drive, what could be causing the conflict? Has anyone else out there experienced my specific problem? And have their been any suggestions posted on a fix for this situation.
Obviously the CLEAN INSTALL experience of Leopard is not immune from the installation BSOD problems of the TIGER UPGRADERS.
I would love to hear from others experiencing these BSOD issues with their CLEAN INSTALLS and any possible workarounds.
    Many thanks,
    John

I think the issue is installing 10.5 on a different drive than the boot drive. I would recommend swapping the drives, making the 10.5 the physical boot drive and Tiger the secondary.
I have done two clean installs on two different machines with no issue. A 3rd machine was upgraded with no issues as well.
Asking other users for sob stories helps no one. Asking for resolution however, is key.

  • Clean install of OXS - hard drive + extra internal

I'm getting ready to do a clean install on my harddrive but I'm wondering how (if at all) it will impact my 2nd internal drive...? Hopefully not at all...?? Please help!
    Thanks
    Carrie

Shouldn't have any impact since your 2nd internal drive is a separate drive.

  • Does a clean install really speed up your Mac?

I did a clean install on my iMac and it was running extremely fast. I have now restored some applications from TM and things seem to be slowing down.
Was it worth doing a clean install?

my mini was extremely fast right after i started using it and for the first 4 or 6 months of use.
now it seems almost as slow as my Cube.
and i don't have a lot of applications instaled or third-party preference panes or small utilities.

  • Clean install on ext hard drive

I have a new 21" iMac arriving and plan on using external drives rather than the internal one. It's my first time installing OS X from the App Store to a new hard drive so I want to make sure I have the procedure correct.
From what I've read I can boot from the recovery partition by using CMD-R at start up and then set up WiFi and procede with the download to my new drive. Is that correct? I also want to make sure the boot partition is untouched. This will make it easier for me on resale because I won't have to copy my data over or do a reinstall of the OS. Installing via Recover will achieve these goals, Yes?
Thanks in advance. "Solved" credit will be given to first correct response.

    Thanks for the confirmation.
I can't see how a desktop WD Black on USB 3 is going to be any slower than Apple's OEM internal 5200RPM laptop drive in the iMac. I like the greater flexibility, esp. in case of HD failure. If I use the iMac's int. drive and it fails I'm computer-less for days if not a full week, not to mention the time to schlep it to and back from the store. Also, as noted, if I keep the int. drive new then that is time saved when I go to sell.

  • CAN NOT INSTALL ON THIS HARD DRIVE

I am currently running 10.3.9 on my 450 Mhz G4 which has 640 MB SDRAM but when I try to install my Tiger CD's (actually looking for the Archive and install option) I get a message that I can not "install Tiger on this drive". I own the CD's and actually have installed them on my wife's mac mini, so I know that the CD's are good. Thoughts anyone?

    Malcolm,
'Will have to check with the previous owner of the mac mini as I do not know if they were purchased seperate from the mac mini or came with that HD. But, thankyou; as, I believe that you have me going down the right road.

  • Trying to clean install Mavericks but hard drive partitioned and won't allow

My MacBook Pro 2012 was set up with a partitioned hard drive. Now, as I upgrade from 10.8 to Mavericks, I'd like ot use the Disk Utility to erase the hard drive and then use the interface to install Mavericks, but it won't let me erase the hard drive.
On the left side of the Disk Utility, below the main hard drive, there are two drives noted, with the OS and something else.
Can you suggest how to do something here? I'm stuck halfway.

I'm not sure what you are doing, but if the Recovery HD is still there:
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Erase the hard drive:
      1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
      2. After DU loads select your startup volume (usually Macintosh HD) from the
left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
      3. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on
the Erase button and wait until the process has completed.
      4. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall OS X: Select Reinstall OS X and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • REALLY Clean Install Mavericks

I have a 13" Late 2012 MBP which I upgraded with a Crucial M500 SSD on which I clean installed Mavericks the day after its launch. The SSD was brand new then, so this was the first thing it was used for, straight out of the box.
Now, I have a "talent" of messing with system files and I may have done something wrong here and there, because OS X is not as smooth as it was supposed to be (for example, compared with 10.8.5 which I previously had on it). App crashes here and there, Safari being very slow or "forgetting" that I clicked on a link etc.
I have verified and repaired the startup disk (from Recovery Mode), same with the permissions, I scanned and repaired it with OnyX but still it doesn't perform as expected.
So I decided to reinstall Mavericks, from scratch. As I would really hate to "inherit" some of these bugs on the new install, I REALLY want to to start fresh. So I need a clean install, free of any doubts, just like if it were brand new again.
Are there any tips other than the normal clean install? By normal clean install I understand making a bootable USB with 10.9, booting from it, erasing the startup drive with Disk Utility and then installing from the USB. (I prefer the USB method, since it would take a while to download 10.9 from Apple, i.e. using Internet Recovery).
And by the way, do you recommend a specific method of doing a bootable 10.9 USB? I tend to use the way via Terminal, but I also heard of DiskMakerX as an alternative.
And last but not least...am I paranoid? Should I worry less and simply do a straight clean install, as this is *really* the *really* good way to go?

⌘R on Boot, Utilities->Disk Utility, Erase Disk, exit Disk Utility, Reistall OS X Mavericks.
(I prefer the USB method, since it would take a while to download 10.9 from Apple, i.e. using Internet Recovery).
    edit: Or that...
And by the way, do you recommend a specific method of doing a bootable 10.9 USB? I tend to use the way via Terminal, but I also heard of DiskMakerX as an alternative.

  • I've tried to eliminate system errors by performing a clean install of ML. What's the best way to set up my iMac for a singlet user?

One of my main goals is to be able to run a Windows application on my iMac, purchased in July, 2012, with the Intel 2.5Ghz i5, 4GB RAM, 500GB hard drive. At first I installed Boot Camp and then Win 7, then the application I need to run, and I don't recall having problems. But I tired of the required reboot each time and got greedy and needy - so I installed VMWare Fusion, only to be told that the W7 software I use won't work with Fusion, but it will with Parallels! So, I was able to get Parallels at a discount (because I had Fusion), and decided I would import Boot Camp into Parallels.
Then the problems began. I suspect I did something I shouldn't have during this process, but to shorten the story I did a clean install of ML, set up iCloud, and monitored Console for problems. And problems there were - lots of them, and they all seemed to reference iCloud in some way. Since I have the ML installer on a thumb drive I thought I'd see what happened if I did another clean install, but this time I'd ignore iCould altogether (yes, I have everything backed up to mypcback.com) and proceeded. As before, the errors streamed down Console's face as if it were my own. I've run OnyX, which seemed to help, but many of the issues persist. I'm at a loss as how to proceed other than invoke Apple Support, which, BTW, is not covered under Warranty.
I need to have a stable ML platform before I start using W7 and refuse to believe that the OSX is "just buggy." Can someone help. I have no other iDevices that need to be synced, and really don't see the need to set up iCloud. Noone else than I use the iMac. It should be pretty simple to create a stable OSX so I can go where I need to go. I realize 4GB is not a lot of memory and will look into that. For the moment, I can stip down Win 7, and OSX for that matter, to free up memory. I didn't want to included a bunch of log files, but I will if someone thinks that it would be helpful.

This DNS change is only the lastest manifestation of what seems like an endless list. Can anybody give me some direction before I have to pay Apple to fix what I think they broke themselvesa?!?  BTW, I am not a tech. Thanking everyone who read this and especially to anyone who can help.

Linc, thanks for the tips. I knew you'd have a good method. I asked for it because I have learned of some of the myths about OSX and it's need (or lack thereof) to be scrubbed, rinsed, and blown dry; suckering folks into buying all manner of utilities to keep your Mac spiffy at all times, when in fact it rarely needs any intervention at all because of its Unix background. In fact, I rarely shut mine down and I've learned that the system is actually designed to be left running under most circumstances.
To keep your data secure the three most important things to know is backup, backup, backup. I use a third-party, cloud-based back-up system. It can automatically make backups every hour if that's what I want and I can supplement that anytime by simply dropping a file into the application's desktop interface.
Since I last posted my Mac has been running smoothly and I've been able to install Parallels and Windows 7, as well as the VantagePoint software I mentioned. Though it crashed once this morning and I submit one line from the log file:
    12/20/12 10:31:00.639 AM appleeventsd[54]: BUG in libdispatch: 12C60 - 1510 - 0x4
After a reboot, log entries spewed all manner of troubling messages, from those that are osascript-related to broken forks, etc. but as far as I know there were no actual crash logs generated until this afternoon, one being just a few minutes ago. Linc, would you be so kind to take a look and tell me if there's something I need to do?

  • Installing XP-Says "Clean Install" First

I purchased a new MacBook last weekend and then ordered XP Home Edition OEM to work with Bootcamp after posting several messages here and receiving good advice. The software arrived today and says the following: "Install the software: Because you have purchased a full version of an operating system, installation requires a "clean install" on your hard drive." Does this REALLY mean what it says? I am starting to panic. I have already installed software, etc. on my MacBook prior to receiving this software today. This is software I will use on the "Mac side" of my MacBook. Do I have to erase everything I put on before I can setup Bootcamp and then XP, or does the "partitioning" come into play here and it doesn't matter?

    Hey Sunny46:
A clean install is for you Windows XP installation. Not MAC OS X, also follow the instructions I gave listed below.
    1) Your software is safe on your mac partition
    2) Press Command + Shift + U to go to Utilities.
    3) Double click on Bootcamp.
    4) Make a Partition for windows (Whatever works for you 10GB, 20GB etc.)
    5) Insert your XP CD
    6) In Bootcamp click on start Windows Installation and then continue.
    7) Let that run and follow all on screen instructions.
    8) When Windows XP ask to to format simply select the format and head to next set of instruction
    9) Once installed, install all BootCamp Drivers for windows.
    10) reboot.......
    11) Rename your Harddrive by going to My computer, right click on your harddrive and bring up properties from there you should see a field to name your Harddrive. The reason for this is so your Mac Parition does not show a untitled name for the Hardrive partition.
12)Thats it! remember to update your Mac OS and your Windows XP

  • Advice Needed - Should I just do a Clean Install?

I've got an older 17" iMac FP that I handed down to the kids (6 and 9). The mainly use Garageband and Pages. Since this was my original machine (before getting my new 20" iMac G5) I decided to leave my account on there, just for a backup. Lately they've been getting lots of "Program quit unexpectedly" on lots of apps, including Garageband, iTunes, TextEdit, and Marble Blast Gold. Things have gotten worse since the 10.4.7 upgrade. I just ran a "fix permissions" and "Verify Disk" all looked good. The machine is in good shape, lots of RAM and about 15G of disc space available.
So, what's my question... I've been thinking of just starting over; doing a clean install. This machine was originally upgraded from 10.2.8 directly to 10.4.x. I just think that maybe starting from a clean disk would help things out.
Some questions. What is the best way to backup the kids accounts? I have a FW drive connected to it, so I can back up stuff to it. I really don't want a "clone" just a decent backup. Also, is it a good idea to delete my and my wife's user accounts (I hear a disk image of each account is created). I could copy those over to the FW just as insurance. I've been moved over to the new G5 for about 3 months now, so I'm pretty sure I got everything over. But you know what happens, as soon as I wipe the old system I will discover I am missing something form the old machine.
What do you all suggest I do? I realize that even after wiping the drive I will probably end up with 10.4.7 after all is said and done. I just think that a clean system may be a good start.
    Thanks,
    Alfredo

    Hi, Alfredo.
    1. You wrote: " Lately they've been getting lots of "Program quit unexpectedly" on lots of apps..."See my "Multiple applications quit unexpectedly or fail to launch" FAQ for advice on troubleshooting this issue.
    2. I trust you've enabled Parental Controls, Simple Finder, etc. to keep the children from discarding system-related files? I presume they do not know the Admin password on that computer and their accounts are not set up as Admin, yes?
    3. You wrote: "What is the best way to backup the kids accounts? I have a FW drive connected to it, so I can back up stuff to it. I really don't want a "clone" just a decent backup."The advantage of duplicating (cloning) is that if you decide to reinstall Tiger from scratch, you can restore their accounts simply using the Migration Assistant from the clone on the FireWire drive after you've set up the an Admin account for yourself to manage their Mac. It's a little-known fact that you can use the Migration Assistant to migrate from an a duplicate of the startup disk of an "old" Mac on a FireWire drive vs. Target Disk mode.
That would also settle the question of saving a backup of your account and your wife's account on that computer for the time being. At some point you could startup from that clone, then use the instructions in "Mac OS X 10.4 Help: Deleting a user account" to delete those accounts from the clone and move the disk images for such to another drive on your new Mac. Note that if one of the accounts you are deleting from such is the only Admin account, you may want to first create another Admin account on the clone and use it to delete-and-preserve your account and that of your wife as you need to use an Admin account to remove accounts.

    4. If you're going to perform a full, fresh reinstall of Tiger on your children's computer, I also recommend — after cloning the drive and assuring you have good, bootable clone — to first "zero" the drive to remove any bad sectors that may have developed. See "Disk Utility 10.5 Help: Securely erasing disks." Select at least the "Zero Out Data" security option.
    5. FYI: If your children access the Internet, see my "Internet Safety for Children" FAQ for my advice on protecting your children on the Internet. This FAQ lists some Mac-based solutions, tips I have suggested in prior posts, and a list of links for additional information.
Note that some of the information above is from the "Moving to a New Mac" and "Zeroing Volumes" chapters of my book, Troubleshooting Mac® OS X, Tiger Edition.

  • How do I download LION and do a clean install on a new disk?

I have a brand new HD which has not yet been formatted.  I would like to download Lion and instead of updating my Snow Leopard OS disk I would like to do a clean install on this new drive.
Do I first do a journaled format on the new drive...?  And if so how do I download LION from the APP store and pointn the install at the new target drive?

    How to Install Lion Successfully
    A. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions:
Boot from your current Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. Then select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.0 for Tiger) and/or TechTool Pro (4.5.2 for Tiger) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    B. Make a Bootable Backup Using Restore Option of Disk Utility:
Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
Select the destination volume from the left side list.
Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
Check the box labeled Erase destination.
Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the external backup drive. Source means the internal startup drive.
    C. Important - Please read before installing:
If you have a FireWire hard drive connected, disconnect it before installing the update unless you will boot from this drive and install the update on it. Reconnect it and turn it back on after installation is complete and you've restarted.
You may experience unexpected results if you have installed third-party system software modifications, or if you have modified the operating system through other means. (This does not apply to normal application software installation.)
The installation process should not be interrupted. If a power outage or other interruption occurs during installation, use the standalone installer (see below) from Apple Downloads to update.  While the installation is in progress do not use the computer.
    D. To upgrade:
Purchase and Download Lion from the App Store.
    E. If you want to make a bootable USB flash drive:
    Make Your Own Lion Installer
    1. After downloading Lion you must first save the Install Mac OS X Lion application. After Lion downloads DO NOT click on the Install button. Go to your Applications folder and make a copy of the Lion installer. Move the copy into your Downloads folder. Now you can click on the Install button. You must do this because the installer deletes itself automatically when it finishes installing Lion.
    2. Get a USB flash drive that is at least 8 GBs. Prep this flash drive as follows:
Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
    3. Locate the saved Lion installer in your Downloads folder. CTRL- or RIGHT-click on the installer and select Show Package Contents from the contextual menu. Double-click on the Contents folder to open it. Double-click on the SharedSupport folder. In this folder you will see a disc image named InstallESD.dmg.
    4. Plug in your freshly prepared USB flash drive. You are going to clone the InstallESD.dmg disc image to the flash drive as follows:
    Open Disk Utility.
Select the USB flash drive from the left side list.
Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
Check the box labeled Erase destination.
Select the USB flash drive volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
Drag the InstallESD.dmg disc image file into the Source entry field.
Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
When the clone is completed you have a fully bootable Lion installer that  you can use without having to re-download Lion. You can also use it to erase your hard drive and do a clean Lion installation.
