Is DVD 2Z691-5599-A equivalent to 2Z69-5305-A  ?

I'm trying to update an older (2004 ish) G5 to 10.4. I ordered an Install DVD on line & the image of the disk posted was 2Z69-5305-A (as suggested by BDAqua). When the disk arrived it was number 2Z691-5599-A. The seller has assured me that they sent a superior disk that will require fewer updates. Unfortunately, the installation process freezes at "preparing to install." I've tried to find the list of compatible machines for this disk but have been unable to locate that information.
The seller is willing to trade disks but if it is unnecessary (as they believe) I'll keep the current disk & try to resolve the installation problem.
If anyone can point me to the list of compatible machines for disk 2Z691-5599-A I would really appreciate it.
Thanks in advance.

  • Mac OS X Install Disc: 2Z691-6040-A

    Hi-
I'm planning to upgrade my mini from OSX 10.4.11 (Tiger) to 10.5.x (Leopard) using Apple's:'Mac OS X Leopard 10.5 CPU Drop-in DVD: 2Z691-6040-A',which is compatible with my system a late 2006 Mac Mini 166GHz Core Duo. Prior to attempting the Leopard installation, I will do a complete system back-up of my Tiger software. Are there any problems that I should be aware of when using the Drop-in DVD? Thanks for your help.

The 2006 Mac Mini was discontinued August 7, 2007.
The DropIn disc was only available for Macs released after October 1, 2007.
Thus it may not be properly licensed for that Mac Mini.
Get the retail 10.5 installer which looks like *
and does not say DropIn, OEM, or Update on it to be on the safe side.

  • Pixelation/Horizontal Lines burning DVD in Premiere Elements 10

I am trying to burn a DVD in Adobe Premiere Elements 10.  The original footage is in 1920x1080 from a Canon HD camcorder.  I just burned a project last week that burned fine.  This one is burning with horizontal lines that appear to be "pixelating" the faces of people in the video.  I've tried interlacing, reversing field dominance, and exporting to an mpeg first, but all with the same result.  When I make the footage into an mpeg, it is crystal clear on the screen.  As soon as I burn it to DVD, it messes up.  I have a feeling it has to do with the program not appropriately converting it to the correct format for DVD, but appear to be missing something.  Any suggestions?

Are you judging this DVD quality when played on a TV and standalone DVD player? It should look fine there.
If you're playing it on your computer, a number of issues could be at work. Most computer playback software doesn't de-interlace well. (DVDs are interlaced, most TVs are interlaced and computers are not.)
So try it on your TV/DVD player. And, if you want to give it a test run on your computer, play it with a program like VLC Media Player, which does a better than average job of de-interlacing. But don't play it at full-screen. DVDs are only the equivalent of 640x480 in size, while computer monitors are usually at least 4 times that resolution and can exaggerate issues.
All of this would expain why you're not seeing this interlacing issue when you output a WMV.

  • IMac i7 not booting from Replacement DVD

After having displaced the installation DVDs for my Quad-Core iMac i7 I needed to order a replacement kit from Apple when I all of a sudden found myself wanting to reinstall SL.
After a couple of days I received "Mac OS X Snow Leopard Install DVD - Replacement DVD 2Z691-6558-A" in the mail.
Problem is, when trying to boot from this DVD the computer halts at the Apple logo. No spinning wheel, it just sits there showing the logo ad infinitum (leaving it overnight - no progress).
The install DVD works fine in my Macbook, and I can boot a Windows 7 install DVD in my iMac.
Wouldn't this indicate that the Replacement DVD I have received is not suitable for my specific iMac model?
    Message was edited by: vibber

Brilliant. Turned out (as I suspected, but was assured not to be the case) that Apple support had sent (and charged me $30 for) the wrong Replacement DVD.
My model needs 2Z691-6590, -6591 or -6608, not 2Z691-6558-A, according to the repair guys. Guess it's too much to ask that the iMac could display a proper error message stating this fact, yesno?
To add insult to injury I will of course be charged a further $100 for the diagnostics (I have no time and energy to even attempt arguing myself out of that one).
What I probably should do is put my iMac up for sale, and use the funds to get a Wintel box. At my age I need to feel at least a little bit in control of my computer.

  • OS X Leopard DVD specification...

    Does anyone know,
where online I may find the information about the specific Leopard install DVD (I was thinking using that serial number on the disc), i.e. to see, weather the version is unlimited, or with keys, and how many?
I tried this Apple site, but I couldn't get any pertaining information.

Yes, I understood for before - there are gray discs (coming from Apple with machines), and those retail black, and blueish ones. More, I also know, the latter DVDs could be Full Install (when it says - Install DVD on 'em), and a Drop In CPU versions, for upgrading from Tiger only.
However, somebody reported having problems installing a Leopard, on a Power PC Mac Mini, from a retail, Full Install version (not a Drop In CPU; but that would hardly matter, as that one should work also) DVD, over Tiger. The serial number on that DVD - 2Z691-6037-A, is just slightly different from the DVD I got, saying 2Z691-6327-A. And they both look the same - black and blueish, with "Install DVD" stated on them. I learned also, that the said Mac Mini doesn't have any tech issues, and that the DVD in questions, is not suppose to really be a full retail version.
PS: Klaus, yeah, you did; but, no sweat really...
Thanks for the comprehensive tutorial, on how to make Safari 5 work...

  • OS 9.2 to Tiger

    Hello,
I am hoping to upgrade my OS 9 machine to Tiger as I no longer have use for 9. I have the option to purchase a Tiger install DVD which is black with a grey X part #2z691-5599-a. Is this DVD a full install which will support wiping my hard drive and installing Tiger without having a previous OSX version installed? I believed it was, but a friend of mine is unsure. Any help is appreciated!

    Another Welcome To Discussions ZRT12!
In case the disc in question is not the correct one, or if your Mac does not meet the System Requirements, here is some additional information.
Please excuse any duplication of previously posted material.
Tiger is available for purchase at The Apple Store (U.S.).
If you know what to look for, Jaguar Full Retail CDs, a Full Retail Version, of the Panther Install CDs, or a Full Retail Version, of the Tiger Install DVD, can also be purchased rather inexpensively, at some online Apple retailers, Amazon, eBay, AppleRescue, FastMac, etc.
Be sure not to purchase grey, upgrade or machine specific CDs or DVDs.
Jaguar and Panther are only on CDs, not DVDs.
The discs should look like the images in the above links.

Software Update, Upgrade: What's The Difference?
As already posted, before upgrading to any OS X version, check to see if your Mac needs a Firmware Update.
If one is required, you must start the computer from a Mac OS 8 or Mac OS 9 System Folder on the computer's hard disk, not from a CD, in order to install it.
Once Jaguar 10.2.x is installed, you can use the 10.2.8 Combo Update,
or if Panther 10.3.x is installed, you can use the 10.3.9 Combo Update, to upgrade to the final version of either OS.
If your Mac meets the System Requirements for Tiger, and you install that, use the PPC 10.4.8 Combo Update, to upgrade to the current version.
    Jaguar System Requirements
-Power Mac G3 or G4, iMac, eMac, PowerBook G3 or G4, or iBook computer

  • Power Mac G5 (Dual 2Ghz 970MP) running 10.5.8 but crashes trying to install 10.4

Would you be able to help? I just purchased an old Power Mac G5 (late-2005, PowerMac11,2) model A1117 EMC 2023 (Dual 2Ghz, 970MP) that was running OS 10.5.8 but want to install 10.4.6 to run Classic Mode applications under 9.2.1.
    The G5 configuration is:
    1. Boot ROM - 5.2.7f1
    2. 1.5Gb DDR2 SDRAM memory
    3. 80Gb Maxtor SATA
Booting off a Mac OS X Tiger (includes Xcode2) install DVD (2Z691-5305-A) (complete with original documentation) that I bought off eBay, the G5 has kernel crash with the following traces at startup:
After this, I reset it by pressing power button, eject the DVD, and I'm back at 10.5.8. I don't have the original install DVD so have tried to use the full retail 10.4.6 (purportedly) version, but haven't gotten that far to verify which version it is.
    Thoughts?
Thanks for your ideas in advance.

I only have the GeForce 6600LE PCIe card in Slot 1. No AirPort Extreme/Bluetooth card.
I did replace the old PRAM battery (voltage 2.94) with a new CR 2032 and reset the PRAM holding down Command-Option-P-R keys until second boot tone chimed. (A lot of dust in there, but I haven't really cleaned it yet...) After boot, I reset the date / time.
First, I inserted the OS X 10.4 install DVD, double-clicked on the Installer icon and the G5 rebooted loading from the DVD and then, the same kernel crash as shown on the screen shots above.
Second, I inserted the install DVD, rebooted without holding the alt key and the G5 loaded the DVD and crashed as before.
Third, I inserted the install DVD, did nothing to open the Installer, then closed the DVD. Checked Startup Disk and none of the icons (HD, DVD, Network Startup with "?") was highlighted. I rebooted and I held the alt key at bootup and it presented me with four icons: 1) the hard drive (highlighted), 2) the DVD, 3) a clockwise arrow, and 4) an arrow facing to the right. I selected the DVD with the mouse and clicked on the right arrow. Same crash as before.
I pressed on the eject key, rebooted, took out the DVD, and 10.5.8 booted up as normal.
Thoughts? I have my suspicions about the DVD, but that makes no sense as it appears to be an original with documentation (Welcome to Tiger, Installation Guide, , box, etc.
    Thanks.

  • Doing a Fresh Install on 2nd hand Mac

    Hi,
I have just purchased a 2nd hand system a external seller, I want to make sure there is nothing lurking on the system that should not be there and to create my own user etc.
    I have
    Mid 2011 27'' MAC
AMD Radeon HD 6770M 512 MB
    4GB RAM
    Intel i5 (Quad Core)
    OS 10.6.8.
    1TB hard drive
I also have an installation CD which says "MAC OS X Snow Leopard, Mac Box Set" on it however I don't really know the source of this.
    So questions
1.) Is there a easy way to make sure that the mac is clean and create a new user / profile etc without doing a fresh install?
2.) Assuming no to above and I need to reinstall then how can I confirm that the CD I have is the correct/official version?
3.) What is the best way to proceed with a fresh install?
-- I'd want to backup just case anythiung went wrong with the installation, is using Superduper the best way forward here? Can I use that to create a bootable file on a external USB with other files on there?
4.) Can I create a new partition on the existing hard in the MAC and use that to create the new version  of the OS?
5.) Once I have my fresh install can I upgrade all the way through to Mavricks via updates or do I need to purchase the install disks for that?  Is it worth it?
    many thanks

The disk is white and has "MAC OS X Snow Leopard, Mac Box Set replacement DVD 2Z691-6560-A" just checked the disk and it does have an install of 10.6 on it. How much of a risk do you think using this would be?  Are there many corrupt copies going around?
It sounds that you have a white retail disk.  There is no risk as such trying to use it but these disks do not have the iLife applications on them.  According to Mactracker, a 2011 27" iMac came with 10.6.6 or 10.6.7 gray installation disks (see Alberto's image) with one disk for the OSX and the other for the iLife applications.  It clearly will have the exact OSX marked on the disk.
Duplicate installation disks can be ordered from Apple Customer Service.  Have your iMac serial number ready and there is a charge.

I am more worried about attempting the fresh installation and it failing and leaving me with no system over the holidays. Thats why the backup is important. I had read on another thread (https://discussions.apple.com/message/10549815?searchText=Doing%20a%20Fresh%20In stall#10549815) that I would need to install iLife, iPhoto,iMovie, etc do they come on the installation disk as well or can I download them?
If you can install from the retail disk, version of Snow Leopard, you will have to purchase the iLife applications.  I think it would be less expensive if you ordered the duplicate installation disks for your iMac.
I suggest that you clone your iMac, then if the Snow Leopard retail fails or other problems occur, you should be able to revert to where you are now. Bottom line, I do think that getting the duplicate disks is your best option.
    Ciao.

  • Ibook G4 OS 10.4.11 wont boot up.

I was deleting a second user account and whilst it was copying that user's files before deleting the power was switched off. Starting now gives the flashing question mark icon after the start up chime. It wont boot up from the instal disc either (holding c while powering up). I also tried command-option-p-r at power up with no effect, and option key with the install disc to use the hardware test. This last gave me an arrow cursor but nothing else. The user guide suggests that the only option is to reinstall the operating system but to do this it needs to read the install disc which it can't. Help.

The new disc finally arrived from Apple - labeled "Mac OS Tiger DVD 2Z691-5599A".
    - Inserted disc and start up holding C key ... sounds of disc being active followed eventually by flashing question mark. If "disc eject" button is pressed the question mark stops flashing.  The only available action is to switch off with power button.
    - restart holding down option key (to try hardware test) ... again sounds of active disc, this time followed by blank screen with movable arrow cursor. This time apple-control-power was effective - not to restart but to shut down.
    - ejecting disc by starting whilst pressing mouse pad works.
    - shutting down seems to vary .. sometimes just a quick press of power button, sometimes has to be held for a few seconds before shutting down.
Maybe Apple have sent the wrong disc?
There is a repeated quiet clicking throughout which I interpret as the hard disc trying to run. It seems like the hard disc needs a little nudge like the needle in a scratch on a vinyl LP!
Reading more from http://support.apple.com suggested a few things to try:
    - start up in single user mode (holding Command-S) : failed
    - start up in safe mode (holding shift key) : failed
Back to the OSX 10.5.6 install DVD I tried previously: this seems to work and gave a utilities menu:
    - "System profiler" found the hard disc under serial ATA - Intel ICH7-M AHCI
    - "Disc utility" failed to find it.
    - "Terminal" loaded but when I tried to enter sudo nvram boot-args="-x" as suggested to start in safe mode it returned "command not found" so that got nowhere.
    - "Restore system from backup" utility isn't active, presumably because it doesn't recognize a hard drive to restore it to?
I have an external hard disc used for some back up. When I connected it to the USB port both system profiler and disc utility found it ok but "start up disc" utility didn't. Unfortunately it doesn't have a system on it. If it did could I start up from it and would that help? How would I install a system onto it? (I'm typing this on an oldish Powermac G4 desktop running OSX 10.4.11)
I will phone Apple first opportunity to check the correctness of the disc. However I do wonder if it can be any better than the 10.5.6 disc anyway.
It seems that what I need is some way of getting access to the hard disc.
Sorry for the length of this - but any more suggestions would be much appreciated.
    Adam

  • Save as HD movie vs movie

I downloaded a 720p video from a URL using QuickTime, and then saved the file -- first as a 720p HD QuickTime movie, and then as a regular QuickTime movie. Both files seem to have the same dimensions and to be of similar quality, but the HD video file is over 1.1 GB in size and the other file is only 444 MB.
Beyond the HD movie taking up more disk space, is there a difference between the two that I'm missing?
Here's the URL for the original file:
    http://tinyurl.com/37j5lpb

so the re-compressed file has a higher data rate, but isn't necessarily of any higher quality than the file created using 'save as ...> movie." right?
That is essentially correct. In the first case ("Save As... > Movie") the actually data is the same as the original source file--just copied to a new container. You can think of it as pouring milk out of its original carton into a cup or glass. The milk remains the same even though it is now in a different container. On the other hand, re-compressing the file always has the potential for degrading the data further. Since a transcoded/re-compressed file will never be better than the original (i.e., you can't create "new" data to replace that which is/was thrown away by compression), it might be more appropriate to speak in terms of "retention of quality" rather than use relative terms of better or lesser quality.
Basically, H.264/AAC is a very efficient/scalable codec with a very wide range of useable data rate. Thus, at low data rate it provides reasonable quality and very small file size. At moderate data rates it provides reasonably good quality in a moderate sized file, and using an unlimited data rate, it retains nearly all of the original source quality in a comparatively larger file. The 5 Mbps video data rate is well suited for 720p (1280x720) files. Compare this with codecs like DV which use 25 Mbps for SD video content which displays at either 640x480 or 853x480 display dimensions. And, when compressed at 1.6 to 2.2 Mbps, usually provides DVD-like quality roughly equivalent to MPEG-2 content compressed in the 5-8 Mbps range.
As a rule of thumb, it is usually best to retained the original data in its original compression format if it is already highly compressed and is already compatible for your use. Where the original file is in a format not already compatible for use by you or is in a compression format having a high a data rate rate/file size too large for your purpose (i.e., you would not normally post a DV file to your web site on the internet when you could post a much smaller file of similar quality), you would convert the file using a compression format and data rate better suited to your particular work flow.
the two files are of different sizes because the HD file has been forced into a particular format that has uses a particular (higher) data rate?
That is correct. Basically the file size is directly proportional to the data rate at which it is encoded. (I.e. data rate per unit of time multiplied by the duration of the video in units of time equals the total amount of data or file size.)

I have a 2 and a Half hour timeline in FCP 7 shot and edited in 1440 x 1080i HD. I want to export it as HD 1440 x 1080i with my Chapter Markers.
Can I do this in Compressor?
I am going to make it a Blu-Ray DVD eventually.
    FCP Studio 3
    Power Mac Intel Xeon
    10GB RAM

I have had success exporting markers from a timeline but I have not have success in them showing up on a Blu-ray via Compressor.
You can make a blu-ray from Compressor but you will have to compress the file quite a bit to fit 2.5 hours footage on a blu-ray. Due to how Compressor makes the BR you may be dissapointed by the output. I would definitely purchase a BR-R disk so that you can do lots of tests.  Keep in mind that Compressor is a really basic option for getting video to BR. It is very limited in authoring options when you compare it to what you can do in DSP(HD-DVD would be the equivalent but the format is now dead).
To have the markers show-up in a export from FC you need to ensure you have done the following:
    1) Make sure all othe markers are actually chapter markers vs. just a regular marker.
Command/option/m will allow you to edit the markers and change the names
    2) When you export your QT set the markers pull-down(lower left) to DSP markers. These markers will show-up in QT on the exported file so that you can jump to another marker from the pull-down in the QT window.

The reality is, DVDs are a LOW resolution media!
(NTSC DVDs are AT BEST equivalent to 640x480 pixels.)
See my page Text size for use in the iMovie/iDVD chain. at http://homepage.mac.com/profpixel/texttest.html to give you an idea of what to expect.

  • Converting 24pi NTSC to 30 pi NTSC/Pal

I shot some video footage and need to convert the video so it can be shown across different formats. Any suggestions?

Or you could try using Compressor 2, using a variation of the techniques described here:
    http://www.macworld.com/2006/02/secrets/marchcreate/index.php?pf=1
The other thing you could do would be to just burn a NTSC 24p disk in DVD Studio Pro or equivalent, as nearly all PAL players support NTSC disks.

  • ISync disappeared...but I can't reinstall!

Somehow, in the process of trying to get syncing with a Palm device, I lost my copy of the iSync app. I downloaded the iSync 2.1 installer and tried running that, but I get the error message "iSync cannot be installed on this computer. A newer version of this software is already installed."
I tried deleting all other iSync files in order to reinstall from scratch, but I still get the same error message, even though a Spotlight search shows no remaining (visible) iSync files.
How can I install? Is there an installer for the newer version I need? I am running Mac OS 10.4.5. Thanks for any help anyone can provide.

The only source for an iSync 2 installer is your original Mac OS X 10.4 Install or Upgrade DVD, or a later equivalent installation disk. [One also exists for Mac OS X 10.4.3, for example.] You'll need to use Pacifist to extract and install the application, as it's not otherwise visible on the DVD. You can download Pacifist here:
    http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/systemdiskutilities/pacifist.html
Launch it, insert your DVD, and wait for it to mount. Then…
    • press the Open Mac OS X Install Packages button to load the Essentials.mpkg file
    • find the Contents of Essential.pkg package, and click on the triangle to open it
    • click on the triangle in front of Applications to reveal several files, including iSync.app
    • select the iSync.app file and press the Install button
Once you've reinstalled iSync 2, you can reapply the Mac OS X 10.4.5 Combo updater to bring it up to version 2.1.1. It must be the Combo—not the Delta—updater, which you can find here:
    http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/apple/macosxupdate1045combo.html
