Is FCP 7 64-bit ?

Hello,
I read the technical specs of FCP 7, but I cannot find if it is 32-bit or 64-bit software.
I also heard that FCP 6 only uses max. 2 GB RAM. Is that also valid for FCP 7 ?
Thanks,
Hubert

Andy,
Quicktime X is 64-bit but, anything that requires a plugin or almost all the formats you would work with in FCP are not handled by Quicktime X. Quicktime 7 is doing that.
Don't take my word for it (I don't 'cause I don't know jack).

Yes the apps need to get there to but everything they depend also need to work that way.

  • Using iMovie footage in FCP: 32-bit floating point audio?

I'd like to use iMovie 7 to capture my DV footage because I like its cataloging and skimming features, and the way it splits up clips based on DV stops. I want to do my editing in Final Cut Pro 5. Unfortunately, I've found that the audio depth in the clips I've captured with iMovie is 32-bit floating point, rather than 16-bit integer, and FCP has to render the audio before it can play back. Strange, since the FCP browser says that the sequence I dropped the iMovie footage into IS 32-bit. Any ideas on how to get FCP to playback this bit depth without rendering, and without having to convert my footage?

Do a search here and you will find all kinds of post on this very subject.
The main problems with using iMove to capture for FCP are
    1. iMovie and FCP capture in very different ways. iMovie captures footage as a DV stream, problematic for editing in FCP
    2. iMovie captures will not give you the timecode from your tape... may or may not be important to you unless you ever need to recapture and reconnect the footage.
In short, if you are editing in FCP... capture with FCP. If you want to split the footage based on tape start/stop, use the Start Stop detect function after you have captured.

  • FCP Motion round trip-what render settings does FCP use? Motions or FCPs?

FCP's sequence set to 8 bit SD uncompressed (not 10 bit YUV-although the clips are 10 bit uncomp, this is how the facility house wants it).
Do Motion's render settings matter if the clip arrives back in FCP as a .motn? For instance doMotion's view menu (options field rendering (altF) & draft/normal/best) and the Motion project settings(8 bit/float etc) make any difference or does FCP 8 bit sequence video processing setting override?
    \Many thanks

and additionally, why do luma levels come back from Motion clipped? As I understand it, Motion will convert to RGB and clip levels above 100%, but its done it to everything by about -10%. Strange, think I'll stick to QT exports in future, you know exactly where you stand

  • Major color/saturation issues in dvd authoring

hi. we've just finished color correction for our indie film, and looking at the digi-beta master on a pro-ntsc monitor- it looks great. but, the dvd's look terrible. there has been a lot of yellow added to warm up the picture. so on the master, the yellow is subtle and applied to the backgrounds, on the dvd, the yellow is awful and everywhere. for example, on a close up of our lead, his skin is so freakishly yellow he looks like an oompa-loompa- not the look we're going for. here's the other kicker- when played on a computer with an LCD monitor, the dvd's look great- like the master. but i've played the dvd's on 4 different television, with 4 different dvd players, and they all look like crap. does anyone know how to solve this color issue in dvd studio pro? we cut the project in FCP. color was final touch, brought back into FCP. quick time exported from FCP, 10 bit uncompressed, 23.98 non-drop frame. then dvd studio pro used to do the authoring. all dvd studio pro settings are at default. THX!

So you used DVDSP to do the encoding as well as the authoring??
Have you tried taking a short-ish section of the footage and encoding it wiht something a good deal better, such as BitVice, MegaPEX or Canopus Procoder or Cinemacraft? These will give you much, much better quality encodes and you simply author the project with the MPEG file as an asset instead of the uncompressed file. If you use a short section you can get a better estimation of what is happening before you go for the full encode.
I realise these encoders are not free, but if you are serious about what you are doing then you'll need to invest in something that is purpose built for the job! The above range from not very expensive to moderate... and Cinemacraft goes into the high end price bracket depending on the version you opt for.

  • Exporting a 4 minute clip using H.264 Quicktime Conversion but it's 2.5Gb?

I have edited a 4 minute video using source footage at 1440x1080 50i. When I export using Quicktime Conversion and H.264 compressor it's taking forever and is coming out at a whopping 2.5Gb. I am sure I have used H.264 and Quicktime Conversion before and a file of this length and size should be about 15Mb. Also I remember it taking far less time.
Anyone got any ideas? I am exporting at the same size and using Best Quality.
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi, welcome to FCP forum,
Bit rate and frame size affect the file size, also best if you export sound as AAC not PCM.
If you are aiming at creating a movie for the web then yes, the final result should be well under 80MB.
Reduce frame size (customize it i.e. 480x270 etc.), keep bit rate at around 1,000kbts not 10,000, do some tests with a portion of the original movie (You could try broadband medium in the Use drop down menu). Initially FCP may show that the export is taking a long time (i.e. FCP shows an initial 7% done and seems to remain like that for rather long) but after a little while the operation is usually completed very quickly.

  • Issue printing ProRes to HDCam SR

    Hello all,
I'm seeing an issue turning up when I print footage out to a 5500 HDCam Sr deck. We're running tiger (10.4.11) FCP studio 2, and using Kona 3's.
The Issue seems to be a grain 'sharpening'. It seems to hit the grain structure and not as much the picture overall as much. Although there seems to be a very slight luminance shift as well. It looks fine on our panasonic BH monitors, but when capturing back from tapes that were printed out, it's there and easy to see when A/B-ing the footage.
At this point, I'm not sure if it's the render settings in fcp (10 bit YUV, RGB, superwhite vs white etc) Kona control panel (v 5x and 6x) settings, or on the deck itself.
The effect does not show up when capturing dailies, so I'm pretty sure it's on the printing out and not on the capture.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. I have tried playing with various settings in all three, but have stumped myself.

    Hey Shane,
Thanks for the quick reply! ^^
I considered the generational loss thing too, but the interesting things are that we don't have this with our HDCam deck (HDW f500) and the fact that we had it on a print out to tape (on the 5500) with some wipe transitions on a 1st gen print out. (which is where we first discovered it- the interesting thing is that we found it again on a recapture)
Those settings(YUV hi precision 10 bit) are what I was running before we found it, and then I changed it in testing to the RGB setting and it seemed to lessen it. Another interesting point is that it showed up on another 1st gen printout (dailies captured, cut and output) where we had FCP generated titles.
Hope that makes sense and helps narrow things down,
    thanks a bunch!

  • Best compression for a 20 min HD

I've got a 20 min HD project, I exported to QT (FCP) 8 bit uncompressed custom settings: HD 720x960,
I've got a good 20 min movie cut in FCP 5.1.4 It's HD.
    I exported to QT(FCP) movie, 8bit uncompressed, and it's 48 gigs.
I'm pretty sure my picture is still good, now I got to compress and render.
Here's what i've done so far:
export to compressor (dragged and dropped).
Compressor settings: HD 720p60; everything else is default (won't let me adjust stuff).
If anyone has a great (or better) recipe, I'd love to hear it.

HI there! as others have asked and implied, what is the DISTRIBUTION format (or where will ths final production be used)?
"HD can be anything" is true.
I shoot on an HVX-200 (maybe like you) and the out put may go to a number fo distribution formats:
    • H.264 @ 9Mbs 720P and the other zillion combinations
    • H.254 at 25% for SD PAL etc etc @ 500Kbs (multipass VBR)
    • video_ts - SD PAL for MPEG2_PS @6.9Mbs
    • a DVCPROHD selfcontains QT movie at 65Mbs
    • LMJP2K@80Mbs.
    • for BDMV at 30Mbs VBR H.264
    • etc etc
THis is where compressor is fantastic for many distribution formats in one batch kob.
Oh .. BTW as said on may threads +try to avoid "EXPORT TO COMPRESSOR+" from the FCP time line. Make a *QT reference movie instead* and then for your workflow, pass THAT reference movie to compressor.. a c*ompressor DROPLET* is very cool.!
post where you want to distribute this and I'm sure all the gang on these helpful forums will post their recommendations and experiences

  • Apple intermediate codec VS apple fcp uncompressed 8 bit 4:2:2

    i'm still very new here.
have FCE and therefore don't have apple pro res.
i'm getting mixed suggestions as to what format to use for highest quality.
i get better results playing back apple intermediate codec in FCE but want to know if its quality is as good as apple fcp uncompressed 8 bit?
ultimately want to output as quicktime H.264
    thanks

    "but don't i Want HD? i'm shooting with the canon 5D M2."
Yes, you do. But how would I know that you're shooting in HD or that you're using this camera? The Apple uncompressed 8-bit 4:2:2 codec is only used with standard definition media.
BTW, FCE is not the best application to work with this camera as it shoots in a non-standard video frame rate. Your media would have to be converted to QuickTime using AIC at 29.97 with uncompressed 48k audio. FCP allows you to create a sequence preset in 30fps, the frame rate used by this model.

  • Uncompressed 10-bit 4:2:2 with Audio in FCP

    Hi,
I've imported an Uncompressed 10-bit 4:2:2 HD (1920x1080) video (it's a capture of an HD transfer from 35mm film) into FCP 6 and now I'm trying to sync up my audio mix. I've got it synced with the pop at 2 and I've confirmed that the mix is synchronous with the print. But when I try playing it back (albeit very slowly) the audio is out of sync about 8-24 frames depending on what point of the film I play it at. Why is this?
Also, I should mention that I asked FCP to just convert my sequence to the settings embedded in the video file. The Sample and Bit rate also match up for the audio between the mix and FCP. Any ideas?
P.S. I should also mention that if I place the timeline at a certain point in the movie it will show me a particular frame. But if I decide to make a cut at that point all of a sudden the viewer will show me a different frame about a second or two earlier in the movie. Seems like it would be a frame rate issue, but I've got 23.98 video playing on a 23.98 timeline. Quicktime seems to think the video is 23.68 fps, which is weird. I don't know what to do with all of this, but hopefully someone does?

Most likely. It is not a consumer format.

  • Using FCP to check video bit-rate

How can I use FCP to analyze a video's kbps? Someone has given me a compressed video and I need to see what the video's bit rate is.

    welcome to this forum,
Just open the clip with QT, put the cursor on the QT player window and hit command-I.

  • FCP 4.5 24 bit Audio Playback

    Hi,
I would like to know if FCP 4.5 can playback 24 bit audio.
While my files are correctly played in QT (7.1), in FCP I only got the image and a strong noise instead of the recorded audio.
Is it something I can do (except export the audio in 16 bit)?
    Best regards,

Iirc (did read on some review), the CyberLink Power DVD 6 supports 24-bit/192 kHz DVD-Audio. DVD-Audio @ 24-bit/192 kHz is mono/stereo only, as you propably already knew -->

and the card you have there, propably supports 24-bit/192 kHz as mono/stereo only too.

  • Is 10 Bit "broken" in FCP?

In various communications with Graeme Nattress re: using his filters on 10 bit material, he descibed 10 bit as "broken" in FCP.
Yesterday, I posted about how using the Multiply mode was not working on a clip that was fine when in DV but in 10 bit, the clip would "disappear."
Today I noticed another clip with a composite mode does not suppoet opacity changes. Unless the clip is at 100 % opacity, it completely disappears from view.
What's up with this? Is there anything I can do about this?
Coming off of HUGE prolems with Media Manager, I am not in the mood to waste more time trying to solve problems. I just want to finish my show--is that too much to ask for?
    Arrgh.
    As always, thanks in advance.

I just want someone to admit that FCP has some serious issues.
I am trying to be a supporter but it's really hard whn you spend all of this money to work like a pro and aspects of the software just don't work. Witht the amount of money I spent on my gear-deck, Aja IO, Raid etc., I could have gotten and Avid Express.
My work flow is totally screwed up now. Instead of color correct and print to tape I am worrying about watching the show a hundred times to see if there are any little problems I overlooked.
Found another one yesterday--a motion control clip was messed up by FCP--was at 50% Constant speed and then all of a sudden, a day later, it was Variable and all kinds of speed control screwed up mania. Usually this kind of crap only happens with Media Manager in my experience. Now it's just happening? How can a pro work like this?
I will say again, I am finishing a show but it doesn't have a strict deadline as I am just trying to shop it for distribution so I "have time" to watch it over and over again. If this was a deadline for air, I would be screwed. Absolutely screwed. That speed control clip would have gone on air like that because it literally changed by itself overnight.
How can Apple not fix this stuff and but expect high end professionals to use this software? If I was opening a studio right now I would not fill it with FCP setups. At this point, I do not trust it to get the job done as I need it done.
Have a nice y'all, back to work for me--going to watch my movie exports again to make sure noithing snuck by me in the previous five viewings...

  • Motion to FCP - frame size changes a tiny bit??

I've done about fifty Motion sequences I'm incorporating into an FCP - NTSC DV anamorphic project.
The Motion sequences are NTSC DV 'anamorphic' 16-9. I output them as 'uncompressed 8 bit'. I bring them onto the FCP timeline, also 'uncompressed 8 bit'. I notice the frame is just a hair's breath smaller ... a thin line of black across the top of the frame (though it fits the sides and bottom). I have to resize it to fit.
    Any thoughts on this?
    Ben

I think I've had that same issue, although I don't work with anamorphic.
I realized the "problem" is that motion's pixel ration is NTSC D1/DV and it has to be changed to Square before exporting it to FCP.
You change that in edit > project properties > change it there.
I dont know if this is your problem, but that was mine and it seems similar
    I hope this helps.

  • 8 vs 10-bit (FCP) image processing.

Is there a noticeable difference between FC Express (8-bit) vs FCP 5 (10-bit) image processing (my DV camera is 12-bit)?
    Thanks for the info!

    FCE isn't 8-bit.
According to the Apple website, FCE uses 8-bit image processing (while FCP 5 uses 10-bit):
    http://www.apple.com/finalcut/index.html
    (scroll down to "editing" section)
And your DV camera being 12-bit? That is referring to the AUDIO.
I have a Panasonic DVX100B, and the audio is PCM 16 bit, 48 KHz sampling. I am refering to the image processing. The video analog-to-digital converters are 12-bit, but you're right DV is quantized to 8-bit.
FCP 5 handles not only DV, but UNCOMPRESSED 8-bit and 10-bit formats. FCE does not...it only handles DV. Noticable difference? Only to an engineer who scrutinizes the image.
So, FCP 5 only uses 10-bit processing when working with uncompressed files? Thanks for the info. Sorry, I'm still a little confused.
If I'm working in standard-definition DV, will FC Express still give me the best image quality available?

  • Fcp - ram speed, bus speed, and 64 bit processing

how much do these (ram speed, bus speed, and 64 bit processing) specs play a role in fcp's performance? I hear conflicting opinions about it's utilization of the 64 bit processor(s). some say yes some say no. is ram speed from one rev to the next that much different, particularly in the last two G5's? Or, is the amount of ram and the processor type the most important considerations in optimizing fcp performance? thanks for your help!

SD/SDI card is to bring in video material in formats other than DV. If all you will ever work in is DV or HDV, firewire only is fine. If you want to work with non-DV formats and without expansion slots, you need to look into something like the AJA io to do your conversion and bring it down firewire. This solution has its own potential problems when the device and the hard drives are on the same bus.
You need a second drive just for media. On the Powermac you simply add a second internal drive. This is not possible on the iMac - an external firewire drive is the only option. This by itself is not an issue. Most people who do this with any seriousness end up adding a series of external hard drives to deal with the mass of media.
The limiting factor is that you only have one firewire bus (all macs have only one firewire bus) and if you run into problems with the camera (or VTR or AJA io) & hard drives not cooperating on one bus, you have no option to fix it. On the iMac, you have no option to add in a card to create a second firewire bus in the system.
So yes, the people at the store are correct. You can make the iMac work (with an external firewire drive). However, if you run into problems, you have severely limited options to mediate them. What I was trying to suggest is some things work better. An analogy might be, If I need to drive nails, the handle of a screwdriver can be made to work, but I should not be surprised if it does it badly and breaks when pushed hard.
    good luck.
