Is FCP 7 compatable with 4K footage? Or 10?

I'm thinking of purchasing a 4K camera but I'm concerned about the ability of FCP 7 or 10 and will the program accept and edit with the footage?  I know it works with the RED after some conversions.  I would think since the recording format of mpg4 it is.  Anyone have any experience?
Thanks

Apple stopped developing fcp7 a few years ago, well before Mt Lion was released so don't expect any updates from Apple.  As far as problems go, I've had it installed for about a month without any issues.  Do some searching here for other peoples experiences.  FCP is an extremely complex program so problems that people have may or may not have anything to do with Mountain Lion.
To avoid any potential problems, it's always a good idea to follow accepted best practices

And it's always a good idea to have a clone of your startup drive before any major upgrades so you can return your system to it's working state.
https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-2494
If you've got a macpro tower, you can have multiple drives installed internally so having multiple OS startup options can be a good idea.  If you're working with a mac that doesn't allow multiple internal drives, you can always partition your internal drive and have mutliple startup options.

  • FCP 3 compatability with G5

    I'm an amateur FCP 3 user with an iMAC. I just purchased a G5 and am looking to upgrade to FCP 5. I'm mid-stream on a project and I'm curious as to whether I'll run into any conversion / compatability issues trying to transfer my FCP 3 project into FCP 5. Or should I just try to finish my project in FCP 3?

    No problems. Upgrade away.
    It is a world of difference.

  • FCP 7 compatibility with newer OS?

    I am an editor who has not made the jump to FCP X. Everything I have been reading in my research for answers was posted between 2011 and the present. I read where Final Cut Studio will work with Lion. I am unclear if it will work with Mountain Lion. I wanted to install some plugins but it said I needed 10.7 or above to do the install and I am still using 10.6.8 Snow Leopard on my iMac machine and Leopard on my Macbook Pro. I am just trying to see what OS I can upgrade to and still be able to edit work with FCP 7.
    Thanks!

    Final Cut Pro 7 runs fine on my installations of osx 10.7.5 and 10.8.5.
    Key things to note: I keep very clean machines. I don't junk up the hard drives with lots of useless apps and DiskWarrior is run regularly. Some apps (eg Compressor) act oddly on occasion.
    your mileage may vary.

  • *FCP capture & compatibility problems with JVC BR-HD50 deck*

    Please help.
    I’m looking for someone who has shot w/ JVC GY-HD200 cameras, using JVC Pro HD MINI dv tape stock and uses a JVC BR-HD50 deck and edits on the most recent (6.03 update) version of FCP. Or some amazing, savvy whiz that has solved this problem.
    I now know that Apple does not support the JVC BR-HD50 deck. However, Apple does support the JVC GY-HD200 camera.
    I have more than 100 plus-hours of footage (shot on JVC proHD mini dv w/ 2 JVC GY-HD200 cam) that is begging to be digitized. I’m not going to ruin my heads by digitizing all this footage from the camera.
    I need a straight answer boys…All I need to know is what deck to use…
    Can someone please tell me what deck is compatible, is supported by Apple AND is available?
    As far as I know there isn’t any” JVC HD deck that’s “currently available” AND “supported” my Mac.” Yes, I’ve been the mac page - Spoke w/ B&H and other outlets and the JVC 6000u is no longer available.
    I spoke with a very patient FCP tech-support fellow & he suggested the JVC CJ VHI…or another FCP tech recommended the “no longer available 6000. These don’t work.
    The bottom line is that my new deck doesn’t fully communicate w/ FCP. (TC issues) Having consulted many savvy FCP editors, IT pros specializing in video & mac, a smart & determined video guy from “B&H,” as well as the fine gentleman at Apple (never spoke to a woman) who are apparently FCP whizzes—I’ve gotten a lot of, “try this,” or “apple doesn’t support the br-hd50 deck or “it looks like your (brand new, custom loaded tower) doesn’t recognize any component that uses fire wire – you need to take it to an apple store.” Which was not true. My fire wire ports work just fine.
    Perhaps Brandon or Jeff (the fantastic mac FCP support) or a few of the folks from JVC could chime in…Kunihiko Sato-san or anyone who is innovative, smart or perhaps wears a black turtleneck. Please only respond with proven results not theories… and “yes” I tried to load video without the latest FCP update, changed cables & tried all the troubleshooting techniques from the Apple FCP support staff. In addition, I “updated “my brand new” JVC deck - Hiromi Minakawa-san?
    I’d greatly appreciate some help with this. I’m not a FCP, Mac or super-tech guru. Thank you!

    Can you tell us exactly what the problem is? Is the computer not recognising the deck at all or is it importing broken clips with huge gaps? (the usual problem).
    If you are using FCP 6 try bringing the footage in as ProRes. This usually brings in the footage with only a small number of frames missing from the beginning of each shot.
    This camera is at it's best if you use the DR HD100 onboard hard drive, save yourself hours of digitising and keep the original tapes as archive / backup and no quality loss (or missing frames for that matter). I have clients who post produce themselves who use this camera purely for this feature.

  • Blue Ray Disk drive compatibility with DVD S Pro, Mac Pro

    Ok, I'll make this an official question, where might I find info on BDR drive compatibility with DVD S Pro, Mac Pro, etc? I'm a little surprised that there doesn't seem to be much info available.
    I can always use my Pioneer BDR-202 with a windows box, I have several, but I'm trying to get AWAY from them.
    Any thoughts, links, etc. welcome, thanks
    Les

    Blu-ray offers a level of interacivity that is not possible with DVDs, so it isn't just an different drive that you are getting with Blu-ray. Seeing how Apple didn't upgrade DVD SP with the new FCP Suite 2, it is reasonable to assume they are working on a separate Blu-Ray Studio Pro, that is going to be completely different than DVD SP. Adobe Encore's support for Blu-Ray is extremely buggy, so obviously moving from DVD programming to Blu-Ray programming isn't just a simple tweak to the code.
    Apple doesn't pre-announce software they are working on so this is all guess work, but it is reasonable to assume that they are working on a Blu-Ray programming application. Be patient. Do you really have the money to burn on the bleeding edge of new technology? A single Blu-Ray burnable disc sells for $20. Two months ago the exact same disc sold for $45. Prices will continue to fall as things stablize.

  • Best practice dealing with mixed footage types

    I will soon embark on my first proper FCP project. The film will be shot at the end of the week on a Sony PMW-EX1 in 1080p25. We already shot some footage a few weeks ago, alas this was mistakenly shot interlaced 1080i50. What would be the best way to go about combining these two sets of footage? Should I de-interlace the 1080i50 stuff first or just drop it all into the timeline and allow FCP to deal with it?

    OK, I found a better solution.Future<String> errString = executorService.submit(
        new Callable<String>() {
            public String call() throws Exception {
                StringWriter errWriter = new StringWriter();
                IOUtil.copy(process.getErrorStream(), errWriter, "UTF-8");
                return errWriter.toString();
    int exitValue = process.waitFor();
    getLog().info("exitValue = " + exitValue);
    try {
        getLog().info("errString =\n" + errString.get());
    } catch (ExecutionException e) {
        throw new MojoExecutionException("proxygen: ExecutionException");
    } The problem I was having before seemed to be that the call to Apache's IOUtil.copy(errorStream, errWriter, "UTF-8"); was not working right, it did not seem to be terminating on EOS. But now it seems to be working fine, so I must have been chasing some other problem (or non-problem).
    So, it does seem the best thing to do is read the error and output streams from the process on their own daemon threads, and then call process.waitFor(). The ExecutorService API makes this easy, and using a Callable to return a future value does the right thing. Also, Callable is a little nicer as the call method can throw an Exception, so my code does not need to worry about that (and the readability is better).
    Thanks for helping to clarify my thoughts and finding a good solution :-)
    Now, it would be really nice if the Process API had a method like process.getFutureErrorString() which does what my code does.
    Cheers, Eric

  • Business Explorer 3.5 compatibility with BI

    Our current environment is Windows 2003/SQL Server 2005. We have a existing BW 3.5 system. Now we want to upgrade the existing BW 3.5 to BI 7.0. We don't want to install the BI_JAVA usage type this is a ABAP stack only. Now I have some questions in regards to this and if anybody can help me with this I would appreciate it greatly.
    Q1. If we upgrade to BI without the BI_JAVA usage type would we be able to use all of the BW 3.5 functionality without having to install JAVA Stack?
    Q2. This BW system connects to ECC 5.0 and SRM 5.0. I would like to know do we have to upgrade the Plugins to a specific support pack level in these source system (ECC5.0 and SRM 5.0)?
    Q3. What is the minimum patch level for Business Explorer front end tools with version 3.x to work fine with BI 7.0 system?
    If you can awnser any of these questions I would appreciate your help immensly and award you points generously as well.
    Thank you,

    If it's MiniDV and has a FW port, I can almost guarantee it will work. Both FCE and FCP's "compatibility lists" are for the most part incomplete-- I have seen many devices not listed there work fine.

  • Trouble with P2 Footage QT Exports

    Hi,
    My P2 footage looks fine in the timeline but when I export QT's (w/ "current settings" marked) the aspect ratio changes and they look squished. The QT info pane states that the video is in fact 1080, matching the clip info and sequence settings. I don't understand what's happening.
    One note: I thought the DP was going to shoot 720, so one thing I'm wondering is if I somehow made a mistake when I brought in the footage, as it was the first time I had logged and transferred P2 footage (I'm used to working with XDCam EX footage where I've never had a problem like this).
    Can anyone help me troubleshoot this?
    Thank you in advance.
    -Cherry

    Thank you for the advice but I don't see any settings to change in the QTPlayer 10, and now the same thing has happened to my client who of course also defaults to QTPlayer 10, but thankfully she has QT7 Player as a back-up, which plays the P2 footage Quicktime correct 16x9 aspect ratio.
    I've seen several references online to this problem with P2 footage - but no solution other than to use another media player. Apparently the 16x9 embedded flag/value is somehow lost during QT export with P2 footage. When this happens, the file is assumed to be in a 4:3 aspect ratio. I've poured through the settings in FCP and don't see anything that I could change to help this.
    Just wondering if anyone knows of a fix - either in QT or in FCP!
    Thanks in advance!

  • Importing HD to mix with SD footage.

    Hi,
    I just got an HDV camera today (Sony FX1) and I have a wedding to film this weekend, so I'm kind of learning as much as I can right now both about filming with this camera and editing in FCP. (I've used FCP for a couple of years, but this is my first experience with HD.)
    I'm currently using Final Cut Pro HD 4.5.
    I plan to shoot the wedding with the FX1 as my front (main) camera and film in HDV. I am going to use a Canon GL2 as a second camera.
    When downconverting to SD for editing, it looks as though the video from the FX1 will have black bars at the top and bottom - something I don't mind, but my customer may have questions about.
    1) Will it be odd to mix footage from the FX1 that has been downconverted to DV with standard DV footage from the Canon GL2? Is there a way to import the footage (anamorphic, or whatever) so that there are no bars? Or, what is the correct setting for importing into FCP? Again, the bars don't bother me and if they have to be there, I can tell the customer that in the future I'll deliver it to them in HD.
    2) When I do edit for HD, will it look odd when switching between the FX1 and GL2? I don't mind the GL2 having bars on the side.
    I guess my overall question is: What's the best way to import footage into FCP 4.5 when using HDV, and are the bars going to be there no matter what if I deliver the final video in standard DV? Again, the bars don't bother me, I'm just worried about how the customer will view this.
    Thanks,
    - John

    I deal with similar issues with legacy 4x3 Beta SP mixed with HD quite a bit. I'm speculating, as I have not had to mix HDV and DV yet, but this is how I would try to deal with it were I in your shoes.
    You can put both in a time line, but it will be painful to edit this way. One or the other will need to be rendered, and the actions you take with the footage will cause you to have to render again. And again. And again. No Joy.
    I would look for a down convert with edge crop from the camera. This will chop off the edges of your HDV frame. As mentioned above, this might have a different name, but the key is to get footage that is of the same format (DV) and aspect ration (4x3) as your GL footage. Edit in DV.
    You could import it 16x9 (black bars on top and bottom as you say) DV, blow it up so the black bars go away, and then slide it back and forth in the canvas with the motion controls in order to adjust the framing. Indeed you might have to do this if you did not shoot with 4x3 safety in mind. This is called "pan and scan" and it is how movies shot wide screen were squeezed onto our 4x3 TVs. If you have to do this your HDV footage will look quite poor. Down conversion and then scaling up is not good JuJu.
    But, if you can't find a way to play the hdv footage out DV 4x3 center cut, or crop or whatever your camera calls it, you might be forced into this scenario.
    You might try capturing the HDV the footage natively in a separate project. Drop this on a DV sequence. It will appear as a 16x9 image (black bars on the top and bottom.) Double click to load in the viewer and click the motion tab. The scale parameter will be at less than 100 percent. Scale it up until the black bars go away and your percentage is a round even number. Then export as self contained Quicktime movie. Name it HDV to 4x3DV. Reimport this into the DV project with your GL footage where you plan to edit.
    This avoids the scaling issue and does the down convert in FCP. I suspect this will look better than the alternative, but I have not tried it.
    Hope this helps.
    Best,
    Tom

  • FCP 7 Captured/Imported letterbox footage incorrectly marked as Anamorphic

    I recently installed FCP 7 and captured 24pA footage with the Easy Setup for 23.98 with Advanced Pulldown Removal. The footage was not shot anamorphic but was shot letterbox (on DVX100b). FCP batch captures the footage and I notice afterward that the anamorphic box checked on all the clips (and correspondingly visually distorted). I notice the same after I import 24pA footage (non-anamorphic) that I had already captured into new FCP project, also setup with the 24pA Easy Setup for Capture and Sequence.
    This is fixable by unchecking the anamorphic column for each of the clips, of course, but it's tedious and shouldn't be happening i the first place.
    Why is FCP 7 interpreting all new letterbox footage as anamorphic? I checked the settings for the Easy Setup and the box for anamorphic is NOT checked! I did not check non-letterboxed video. Also, the pixel aspect ratio. is set at CCIR601 on both the capture and sequence settings. Any ideas about the letterboxed video? Thanks.

    I don't have an answer to your core question, but I own the DVX100B and shoot/capture at 24PA/advanced pulldown removal. However, I either shoot SD or I attach anamorphic lens adapter for 16:9.... have never tried using either Letterbox or Squeeze mode.
    Reading through "The DVX Book" by Barry W. Green, he suggests that Letterbox mode is useful for simulating a wide screen look on a 4:3 TV screen, which is what you may be trying to achieve, but if your viewers are watching wide screen, you would get better looking results using the Squeeze mode.
    My workflow is designed to create deliverables that are properly formatted for 16:9 flat screen displays because the majority of my clients and end users no longer own a CTR monitor or TV.

  • Converting 24p to NTSC 30 fps with existing footage already captured

    Working on a project that should have come to me downconverted to NTSC 30fps. I already have footage that was shot DVCPro 24p and have started working (selecting) with the footage. We would like to shoot our remaining footage downconverted in-camera to NTSC 30fps.
    So - I'm curious if FCP allows you to convert material that's already been captured.
    Thanks
    G4   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

    You'd need to use the Standards Converter from www.nattress.com.
    $100 but worth it. It also converters 30 to 24, and PAL to NTSC, and vise versa.

  • Is Camcorder Canon XA20 compatable with FCE

    I have purchased a camcorder Cann XA20 and hoping it is compatable with Final Cut Express HD.
    Can some advise please.

    There are types of footage that are known as Interlaced and Progressive.
    If using PAL footage that has a video standard of 25 frames it is actually made up of 50 fields.
    A field is one scan of odd lines followed by a scan of even lines, these two fields when combined create the one frame.
    This is the type of footage FCE can work with.
    Progressive footage is a self contained frame without the two fields.
    Simply put, FCE is designed to work with Interlaced footage.
    If your camera has shot Progressive footage do not expect it to Import.

  • Windows 8 and itunes 11 compatibility with an ipod

    I have itunes11 and Windows 8. I've called Apple and I've talked to Microsoft. This was months ago. I can download itunes and run it from my laptop but am unable to sync my ipod. I get an error and it automatically reboots my computer. I was told there were known compatibility with itunes and Windows 8.  This was months ago.
    I know how to downgrade itunes to XP or Win 7. This is not the issue. I can download to my laptop and place, it will not sync to my ipod device (which is a fear years old), but when I did talk to support I was told that it was supported. The ipod was not the issue.. It was the incompatibility between the programs.
    I see recent updates in the support community in the past month about production resolution but this still has not resolved my issue. I don't believe purchasing a new ipod is going to resolve the issue either.
    If anyone has successfully developed a workaround or recently downloaded itunes11 w/ Windows 8 and can sync to an apple ipod I would love to know how you did it.

    Im not sure that will solve the issue I have with itunes. I have a lenovo laptop and I think it's just an issue with Apple who has to modify the program for users of Windows 8 so that itunes can be used and to find purchased music. I found the music I purchased through itunes but it's not the full tracks. It said it allows me to download it fully so I can hear the whole track, but needs some kind of capatibility? I have no idea what the problem is. If someone has the answer knowing my computer brand and having windows 8 compatibility issues, please let me know what you suggest.

    Is adobe photoshop CS2 compatable with windows 8?

    I have removed and re-installed CS2 twice now and still get the same library application error.
    DO NOT INSTALL WINDOWS 8 ONTO YOUR COMPUTER IF YOU WANT TO KEEP CS2!
    Telling us to spend more money to upgrade our software to meet OS does not show trust to the users. CS2 should be able to work with new OS systems and if not users should be allowed to update their current program for free to be able to use it on the new OS.
