Is it possible to forward an already open X11 window?

Hello all,
I have a terminal open using my account on a Fedora 7 machine that is SSH'd into another Linux machine using another account. Is it possible to forward this already open X11 window to my Mac? (So that I can continue to work through this other account, but from my Mac. Much nicer working environment... )

the question is more about the ability to forward an already open X11 window
I guess this is not possible.
The easiest solution is, of course, either ask the admin of linux2 to create your account, or ask user2 to share the password. If this is not possible, then you can try the "screen" command in the following way:
On linux1:
linux1$ screen
linux1$ ssh user2@linux2
(ask user2 to enter his password)
linux2$ (type ctrl-a ctrl-d)
linux1$
(you can logout from linux1)
On your Mac:
mac$ ssh linux1
linux1$ screen -r
linux2$
(now you can work on linux2 as user2)
linux2$ (type ctrl-a ctrl-d)
linux1$ exit
mac$
You may shutdown/sleep the Mac. screen daemon is still running on linux1 and keeps the connection to linux2. Later you can connect to linux2 from your Mac (through linux1) again by the same procedure as above.
See "man screen" for more info. Ask again here if you need more help; I'm not a everyday user of "screen", but I hope someone more familiar with "screen" will help you.

  • Is it possible to write to an open DOS windows - command line

    HI,
I am able to open applications from LabVIEW, But except for the first command I am unable to write to the same application again and the LabVIEW will always open a new application. Is there a way to communicate with a DOS window application without re opening it each time? Is there a possibility to have a Dialogue with a DOS window?
    Thanks

    Hi,
The command "Tasklist" will return the applications running in the system (as viewed in the task manager).  Parse the list and if the application you are trying to launch is already running do not launch else launch the application following the same procedure.

  • Open .java file in already open JDeveloper

Is there a way to force JDeveloper to open all source files in only one JDeveloper window? I am working on a project and every once in a while I download a java source sample from the web. It would be good that instead of JDeveloper opening a brand new window, it would just add it to the Miscellaneous Files branch in the already open JDeveloper window.
Thanks in advanced for any suggestions. Hopefully there is another way than having to save the file to disk and then going through JDeveloper's import menu.

  • Is there a way to view just one open Finder window (without any other Finder or other application windows coming into view) from a Desktop hot corner in Yosemite?

I just upgraded to Yosemite from Snow Leopard on a MacBook Pro. Previously, I could view just one open Finder window by viewing the Desktop via a hot corner and then selecting Finder from the Dock. This would pull only the top Finder winder into view, without showing any other open Finder windows, and most importantly, any other open application windows. I could then easily drag files/folder from my Desktop into the Finder window (which I do A LOT). Since upgrading to Yosemite, whenever I use the Desktop hot corner and select Finder from the Dock, it pulls every open application and Finder window back into view, putting Finder in front.
Is there any way to view just one already open Finder window (or all Finder windows for that matter) without seeing all other open applications, without having to Hide the other applications or using Spaces?

Yes I've created an Automator Application that does the job, but the "watch me do" function that does the Mail Merge is a rather Clunkey work around, as the mouse moves all over the place, thats the part i want to remove and replace with a script, or work out a different way around it that avoids the "watch me do" function.
Is this Possible? or where/who is there i can ask to write me a script, im not a novice to scripting, but i am a novice to Applescript.

  • Close a file opened in windows XP

     Hi guys,
I'm writing data in a text file and I saw if the file is already open in Windows XP the data are not written and I have no error message.
So my question is how can I close the file in Windows with Labview ?
And is there a way to check before closing it if the file is open by Windows ?
I tried with "close file" and with "close file+.vi" but it's not working.
    Thanks

If I understand it right  I should look on Microsoft side and not in a function in Labview ?
Like to use the command with the cmd.exe to close it ?
Yes, it is a command-line program made by Microsoft. The code that cheggers attached is basically how you would use it. As I noted, the utility is designed to track files opened by network users. To track files opened locally you need to run the command with the "/local ON" parameters. You only need to do this once, though a reboot is required. More information can be found on the Microsoft site.

  • File sharing: possible to warn second user of a file that it is already open?

[I hope this forum is the best place for my question.]
I run a small business: a medical practice. I use a Mac Mini to store all my documents, and we use two iMacs to access the documents through File Sharing. I do not run OSX Lion Server. All machines have OSX 10.7.5.
I have a Numbers spreadsheet on the Mac Mini that is frequently opened and modified by the receptionist on one iMac, but also occasionally opened and modified by the doctor on the other iMac. (The vast majority of other files never need to be opened by more than one user.) Occasionally, the Numbers file will be opened by both users at the same time. If one user modifies the file, when s/he tries to close the file, a dialog pops up warning that there are two versions, and providing the choice to Revert or Duplicate & Save. This means a choice between losing changes, or subsequently checking two documents for differences.
Note that it isn't possible to simply call out, "Hey, have you got that spreadsheet open?" when the doctor is seeing a patient.
Also note that privacy is an issue, as the spreadsheet contains numerous patient names.
Is there a way to: (a) Warn the second user opening the file that it is already open? Or (b) Make the file read-only when a second user tries to open it? (c) Inform the second user that the file is in use, and they can't open it at all. (There may be other solutions that I can't think of.)
I am open to all ideas. I have tried dabbling with AppleScript, but can't find a solution with my emerging AppleScript skills. I have been trying to find out if installing OSX Lion Server on the Mac Mini would help, but I can't find the answer online. (I would have to pay someone to install OSX Lion Server, as I have medical software installed that may or may not fit well with Server.)
Thanks in advance for any help.
    Peter

hmm, then would there be any way to reproduce the effect of the 'delete' or 'backspace' keys? If I'm right, I think there was an ASCII code for the backspace character... Would it be possible to insert it to get a character deleted!? :/
I really need to find a way to do all of these operations on a text file because I think it wouldn't be a good idea to completely re-write 30Mb+ large files each time some data has to be modified :P

  • I uninstalled and reinstalled and tried to restore my old profile, but I can't open Firefox, it says another copy is already open. How do I fix that?

I followed the steps to backup my profile and saved the file on my desktop. I uninstalled Firefox and reinstalled it. I tried to restore my profile by copying it to the "new profile" but it didn't work, my bookmarks etc did not come back. When I looked in the new profile my old one was there as a folder so I moved it out to the Profiles section. I now had 2 profiles. I deleted the new profile using the Profile manager, thinking the old one that was left would just take over. I then tried to open Firefox but it says
    Close Firefox
A copy of Firefox is already open. Only one copy of Firefox can be open at a time.
Where is this other copy? How do I close it?
    Thank you.

Did you check the File > Work Offline setting?
Press F10 or press and hold the Alt key down to bring up the "Menu Bar" temporarily.
A possible cause is security software (firewall) that blocks or restricts Firefox or the plugin-container process without informing you, possibly after detecting changes (update) to the Firefox program.
Remove all rules for Firefox from the permissions list in the firewall and let your firewall ask again for permission to get full unrestricted access to internet for Firefox and the plugin-container process.

  • FireFox doesn't fully close so whenever I reopen it refuses to open secure sites I had up when I closed it; it keeps thinking that the tab is already open and wont open another one. How do you fix this?

Whenever I close Firefox and then reopen it later on it opens the last webpage I had open before closing the browser instead of my homepage. It seems that exiting Firefox doesn't fully shut it down and just puts it into hibernation mode. This has become a problem because when I have a secure webpage open when I close the web browser, without logging out of the page, and then try to go to that page again it thinks that it's already open and wont open another page for me. This means that I can't even navigate to the page to log out. I think it might be just a setting with Firefox 4 but not sure which one, any suggestions?

For possible causes and solutions see [[Firefox is already running but is not responding]].

  • How do I restore my Firefox profile when I cannot even open Firefox because I receive the message "a copy of Firefox is already open?"?

I was able to use firefox, but all my bookmarks and history disappeared. Also, the forward and back arrow and refresh buttons weren't working. I followed the directions for restoring firefox profiles, and that didn't work. I wasn't able to open firefox again, and I received the message: "a copy of firefox is already open. only one copy of firefox can be open at a time." I tried closing firefox, even uninstalling it and reinstalling another file, but I still get the same message over and over again.

  • There was an error opening this document. This file is already open or in use by another application

I cannot open any PDF documents. I receive one of two error messages:
"There was an error opening this document. This file is already open or in use by another application."
"This file is in use. Enter a new name or close the file that's open in another program."
I do not know how to open the document in another program, so I am perplexed how it could be open in another program.
I tried Repair the Adobe Installation from within Adobe Reader and from the Control Panel (Control Panel\Programs\Programs and Features\Uninstall or change a program) using the Change option. I'm assuming they are the same process, although I'm not sure. Neither method worked. I rebooted after each.
I'm at work at a huge federal agency, so we're of course on a network. It takes several days to receive agency IT help, which is why I'm asking here. I can open Word and text documents. Nothing else seems to be amiss on the 'ol pc.
    Adobe Reader 11.0.05
    Windows 7
As you can tell, I have only limited knowledge of the possible issues.
    Thanks!

    Shared network drive.
I was not able to open the PDF documents via Notepad.
Interestingly, and perhaps supportive of your hypothesis, I subsequently had problems with Outlook wherein I could not save or close an email I was writing because "you do not have permission." I rebooted my computer and now Outlook works fine (and it save my email, thank goodness), and I can open PDF documents.
Hopefully it will stay this way. If not, I'll be back!
Thank you very much for offering to help.

  • How to open a form of an already opened Access project from another application?

    Dear forum members,
I have this problem: I have multiple modules in both Excel and Outlook that open Access forms. Therefore is use simple codes like these:
    Sub Regelopenen()
    ActiveWorkbook.FollowHyperlink "\\SERVER\Documenten\JBO\" & Environ("computername") & "\Orderstroom.accdb"
    Set oApp = GetObject(, "Access.Application")
        oApp.DoCmd.OpenForm "OrderOverzicht", , , "ID = " & Range("AM" & Selection.Row)
        oApp.Forms![orderoverzicht].Tabs.Value = 2
        oApp.DoCmd.Requery
    End Sub
Most times the "Orderstroom.accdb" front-end will be running but when it's not I want the code to open it. For that manner I use the FollowHyperlink method (that simply opens the front-end if it's closed and brings it to the foreground) in
combination with GetObject (that just sets the object).
Now, this works like a charm, except for when another front-end was opened
before Orderstroom.accdb! In that case, the code tries to open the wished form in the front-end that was opened first.
I know that the form would open in the correct front-end when I add the front-end's path to the GetObject method, however this is no solutions because it will
always open that front-end, even when it is already opened.
I've searched for hours the past weeks. Unfortunetaly I can't seem to find a work-around for this problem! Can anyone help me, please? :(
I'm desperately looking forward for you answers!

    Is this so impossible?

  • FTPEx: 425 Possible PASV port theft, cannot open data connection..

    Hi All,
I am getting the below the error while comminicating to FTP server.
Delivery of the message to the application using connection File_http://sap.com/xi/XI/System failed, due to: com.sap.aii.af.ra.ms.api.RecoverableException: Possible PASV port theft, cannot open data connection.: com.sap.aii.adapter.file.ftp.FTPEx: 425 Possible PASV port theft, cannot open data connection..
This error is random. Some times service is working is fine and some times its failed to process.
Can any one suggest me the peramnent solution for this.
    Thanks & regards,
    Kartikeya

    Hi
The reason for the error is
The ip address (+port) is not same for both these operations
        - Control connection
        - Data Connection
Changing active/passive mode settings might help (as a common solution).
Problem can occur due to below settings,
       - FTP server/ Firewall on its side (affects Passive Mode)
       - FTP client/ Firewall on its side (affects Active Mode)
After Initial Control connection is made, the below happens for Data connection
When Active, the CLIENT opens a dynamic port for DC on which it would be listening, for the server to bind its source port
When Passive, the SERVER opens a dynamic port for DC on which it would be listening for the client to bind its source port
when the firewall on Server side does not have these ports open, you get the above error.
The error could be because of other reasons also, but I suspect that the dynamic port is out range of the ports opened at your FTP server firewall.
So now I think you are one step forward to fix the issue
    Regards
    Vishnu

  • This file is already open by another user or another application-

I am using InDesign CS4 on Mac OS 10.6.4, and sporadically get an error message reading "This file is already open by another user or another application. This file may be stored on a network server and cannot be opened until the other user closes it." This happens when I try to open a saved .indd file. The files are all on my hard drive, I created them, and nobody else has access to them.
So far I've lost a handful of files' worth of work, as I cannot open the file in InDesign as an original or a copy, nor can I copy the file in the Finder (I get "unknown error: -22"), nor can I copy or move it using Terminal, nor can I zip it up. Time Machine doesn't recognize the file, and Apple Support couldn't help.
I tried calling Adobe Support, but after telling me it was $40 for the answer the phone tech sent me back to the website instead of letting me pay!
How do I fix this? I am losing hours of client work every time this happens, and only if I have a pdf version of the file can I recreate the work.
    Many thanks in advance.

The last time it happened I restarted, cleared both the PRAM and NVRAM, and ran both Disk Utility and Disk Warrior. Nothing fixed it. I changed the permissions a number of times and that did not fix it.
It's important to note that it doesn't happen to every file I save from InDesign; if it did I would have re-installed CS3 and dealt with that, because this issue never happened before I upgraded. So there's also no way to know if a possible fix is working or not.
Also, there were no placed images or other artwork in the file this happened to most recently.
I've checked my FontCase prefs, and if it's not running it's disabled, so that's out. I have some fonts that had been converted from Windows PostScript to TrueType, so I've disabled those.
As I mentioned in the original post, I am not on a network beyond my home network, which consists of two computers and two routers. The file is on my computer's hard drive, and I am the only person accessing it. While I do use Dropbox, this file is not in that directory.

  • Read a file in labview already open in another program

    Hi,
I am using labview to read a text file, also there is one more software(not lab view) is writing to the same file which I am using to read.My problem is that ,is it possible to read a file which is already openned by another software ?
    Thanks,
    Sachin Kudari

    Hi Sachin,
that depends on that other software...
    - When writing to a file usually it is opened with exclusive access rights to the writing software. No other software can open the file simultanously.
    - The file may be opened with non-exclusive access by the writing software. Then LabVIEW may access the file too.
    - The file may be opened with exclusive access rights by the writing software for each write access and released when write access is finished. Then LabVIEW may open the file in parallel, but errors may occure for simultanous file access from both parties...
It's never a good idea to share one resource (your file) for several requests (your different executables). It may work (with several conditions), but it doesn't need to.

  • How to display remote front panels of subvis that are already open

I inherited an RT project that uses remote front panels for nearly all the user interfaces. The host application opens a remote front panel the the top level RT vi, and there are several subvis on the RT system that are opened from that top level vi and thus displayed on the host (i.e. their "Show Front Panel When Called" properties are set TRUE).
If the Host loses its connection to the RT system when any subvi front panels are opened, and the host application is restarted, it can re-open the top level vi remote front panel, but all the RT subvis that are already open will not display their front panels. I am looking for a way to open the front panels to these subvis from the host application.
The kicker is, I need to know which subvis are actually running before I attempt to open remote front panels. Is there any way to determine what subvis are actively running (and not just in memory, such as subvis that won't get executed until the top level vi reaches a certain state)? I am thinking that I could create a list of the subvis that I need access to, check to see if any are actively running on the RT system, and then invoke a remote front panel connection with those that are running.
Does anyone have any ideas as to how I might be able to do so? Or any other suggestions? [and yes, I know that RFP communication is probably not the best way to go, but we're too entrenched in this software to start over with a new system!]

It might be possible to work around this behavior by placing VI invoke nodes in your top level VI that reference each of your subvis and setting the Wait Until Done invoke method to false.  This should cause the subvi to close when the top level VI closes even in the case of an unexpected restart.
You can access this invode node in the functions pallet by selecting Application Control » Invoke Node and also selecting Application Control » Static VI reference.    Wire the Static VI Reference to the vi reference input node and double click the Static VI Reference and select the appropriate subvi in the dialog window.  Left click on the Method section of the invoke node and select Run VI. Finally right click on the Wait Until Done invoke method and select Create Constant and ensure this constant is set to false.

You can access this information by using the Real-Time System Manager (Tools » Real-Time Module » System Manager).  This can be used to show what VIs and subvis are loaded into memory and which are running.
For more information on using this tool please referere to this Knowledge Base article.
