Is it possible to take a labview application and compile it to run on an embedded processor?

Hi
I was wondering if anybody out there knows if it is possible to take a labVIEW application and compile it to run on an embedded processor (e.g. ARM7)?
If so does anybody know what the required capability of the target processor is (i.e. RAM, ROM etc.) and what tools I need.
Many thanks
Ash

Ash,
There is also another option for processors like the ARM7.  You can load a PDA OS on it and use the LabVIEW PDA toolkit.  The LabVIEW PDA toolkit is MUCH easier to use and is quite a bit less expensive.  You will have the problem of getting the OS correctly configured, but in the long run, it may still be cheaper and easier.  I use it quite a bit with my Dell Axim X51v which has this processor and Windows Mobile 5.  There are still problems to work out, but not nearly what there are with LabVIEW Embedded.
If you want to go the LabVIEW Embedded route and you need some help, let us know on this forum.  There are several of us that have experience and can help to guide you.
Hope that this helps,

  • Is it possible to test a LabVIEW application

I'm currently developping a LabVIEW application. To ensure functionnaliti, quality... I would like to automate test. But I would like to test the overall application. And this kind of test requiers a user that read dialog, click on button of dialog box, do some actions... Does TestStand allow us to repeat theses operation?
TestStand is new to me. I saw some demonstration in some LabVIEW seminar. But I understood that it was mainly built for testing VI that has inputs and outputs... We specify parameters and we have an average of response to compare to. am I mistaken?

Are you looking for a tool to validate an application? Winrunner and Rational have packages for GUI testing. TestStand is not for testing VIs. It is a test manager. It uses VIs, DLLs, etc. to perform tests, manage the results, create reports, and log data. It could replace all of your LabVIEW dialogs.

  • Minimizing LabVIEW application to system tray or running it as a Windows process

    Hi guys,
Is there a way I can minimize a LabVIEW application to the system tray on the right bottom corner of the screen ? My application will run all the time and all I want is a pop-up when errors or information/reports have to be displayed. I have searched exhaustively and now am posting this question. Please let me know if this can be done.
also, Can a LabVIEW application run as a Windows process? Like it starts up automatically on booting the system?
    Thanks!
    V
I may not be perfect, but I'm all I got!

If you search for System Tray you'll find lots of people trying to do the same thing and a few places with example code to get it working.  But the best method I've seen is actually on the Lava forums.

As for starting a application on startup.  Again I expect searching you'll find alot of people saying the easiest way is to create a shortcut to your application, then place the shortcut in the Startup folder in your start menu.

  • Does a method exist in order to take a labview executible and derive the source code VIs used to create it?

Has there been any type of methodology for taking a labview executible and extrapolating the source code VIs used for creating the VI?

Officially they are embeded in the exe in an undocumented way. So you can't easily get at them. But you can always attach a remote debug session and get into the diagrams that way. That is if the diagrams were not removed during the build, which requires a conscious and extra action by the person to remove the according check mark in the build options of the project. So by default all diagrams are totally gone and are definitely not possible to get back from the executable, unless as smercurio has mentioned your name might be Carnac

  • Stand alone labview application (.exe file) does not run properly

    Hi all,
I am trying to make a stand alone labview application to run on another computer ( I have never done this before).
I went through the tools->build application prompts and was able to build an exe file.
the program is supposed to control a power meter and make power measurements then save them to a text file.
When I run the exe file, on the same computer I compiled the exe file on, the program generates a text file to save data to but it can not communicate with the power meter.
There are some sub-VIs and a dll file that are used to communicate with the power meter. Could it be that I am not telling labview to correctly
include these files when I create an executable?
What are some common problems that occur when generating stand alone applications that could be causing my issues?
And does anyone know of any good tutorials on generating stand alone applications in labview other than the NI help files?
    Thanks for your help,

Hi Bill, thanks for your suggestions.
I haven't tried to run this app on another computer yet. I'm just trying to run it on the computer it was developed on.
The computer I developed it on has all the drivers/resources I need to control the power meter.
Also, I don't know how to include the VISA runtime with my installer. could you explain how this is done?
This is the first time IV tried to turn any labview programs into stand alone exe files so I don't anything about how to do it other than what I've seen in youtube videos and help files.
If you know of any good tutorials that will help me figure this out I would appreciate it.
    Thanks,
My fault - I didn't read that this was the same computer.  I know the very end of Core 3 studies shows how to build an executable and installer, but even that is very general.  I'm not sure if there exists a tutorial on how to do it.
As for including the runtimes, when you build an installer, you have to include the runtimes that your executable will need.  It's fairly straightforward.
Since it won't run on the machine that built it, I'll have to think about it a little bit...

  • KE30 Report:-Takes very long time and ends in a Run time error

    Hi Expert,
Since last three  week (after up gradation of system) we are not able to run any of KE30 reports in Production system and its end with Run Time Error. Even in development system where data is minimum it is taking 45 Minutes to give output where it should take maximum 4-5 Minute. Before up gradation it was working fine
What could be the reason for this and how can i resolve this.
    Thanks in Advance
    Bipin Tiwari

    HI Sridhara
Thanks for quick response. After Up Gradation we ran SGEN T-code but no impact on system performance. There after we build new summarisation level in KEDVP (system proposed) and activated it but still it is taking 30-.35 minute to generate the report in Development system which should normaly take 1-2 Munite.
Can you suggest what else we can do or is there any better way for build summarisation level  in given scenario.
    Best Regards

  • Interface between LabView Executables and compiled MATLAB code

Query: Does anyone have experience of calling compiled MATLAB functions from a LabView Executable?

    Hello
Well, I am using some applications as you ask. Some calculus was done in matlab, so, now, it is compiled as dll an front end and other calculatiosn are in Labview. matlab dll are registered as activex, and so are called from labview. Integration is so good, tha some old matlab application was changed to Labview and matlab dll.
I must to state that I am not the integrator. My part is only Labview. So, should you have further questions, I can pass this thread to the integrator company. I do not promisse answers.
    But it runs fine.
    Cheers

  • LabView Crashing and compile server error.

    Hi,
I'm having some errors when I compile code for my FPGA (PXI-7831R). I am using LabView 8.2.1.
Sometimes labView crashes completely and sometimes it comes up with a compile server error.
My code contains 3 VI's. The first send sends digital output and reads digital input 10 times and then called another VI to save these results. The second VI repeats the first VI 10 times.
When the first VI is compiled on its own it works (including the saving data VI which saves it to a FIFO) but when the second VI is compiled, that is when it errors.
I have attached the compile server errors and the screen dumps of when labView crashes.
Can anyone suggest what I am doing wrong?
    Thanks.

ok. Let me try and make my problem a little clearer....
I have now combined all the VI's into one.
It is supposed to write to the digital output and read from the digital outputs 10times at a rate of 10us and store the data to the FIFO. This process is then repeated at a rate of 80ms for 8 times.
I have attached a word document with an explanation on the error.

  • What kind of function(s) (in dlls) have to be call by a Labview application to be able to manage the PC's power supply

Assume that a Labview application is running on a PC. The PC has a DC battery. When a "power off" is detected on the AC line, data should be saved, Labview application and Windows should be closed.
What kind of function(s) (of which dll) should be called by a Labview application to realize this data and system management in a safe manner ?

UPS (Uninterrupted Power Supply) systems can send messages to the PC through the serial port when the AC is lost and when battery is low. I'm not sure how this message is sent but I suspect they use Windows Messaging. If you could find this out, you could write your vi to constantly look for this message and shutdown when it sees the message.

  • LabVIEW application don't closed by shutdown or logout

    Hallo,
    here one small question.
    LabVIEW application running under Windows2000.
Now Ctrl+Alt+Delete pressed, then "Log Off..." choosed.
LabVIEW application closed, but Windows don't logging of and Ctrl+Alt+Del must be pressed again for logging of. The same situation with "Shut Down...".
If two application are running, then only one received AppExit event, and second - not.
How can I avoid this situation?
My goal is following: by Ctrl+Alt+Del->LogOff/ShutDown all LabVIEW application must be closed. Do you have any _simple_ solution?
    Thank you.
Some examples in attachment. Just start these application, then try to logging of or shutdown.

See http://zone.ni.com/devzone/cda/epd/p/id/4394 for windows_messaging_que.zip and use it to listen for WM_POWERBROADCAST, but, note this DOES NOT WORK UNLESS THE LabVIEW APPLICATION IS COMPILED INTO AN EXECUTABLE (.exe)!  When running within the development environment, the message is never caught.  We didn't successfully catch WM_QUERYENDSESSION this way either, but in our case, we did not care, and so did not pursue it further.
