While i ran database backup in rman it stores the file sets into default location $ORACLE_HOME/dbs ... I relocated in to some other drivers in same machine also.. I got work ... But due to space issue i would like to take backup into some other machine so its possible ? how to configure it...

GopinathYou need to mount the second machine and take backup to that mount point

Hi all,
I have an oracle 9.2.0.7 database instance on SLES9 sp3 64bit. And RMAN backup is taken every day by one who is I dont know although I changed sys and system passwords. It seems that the backup is taken on local machine, doesn't it? I looked at v$session_longops view then I saw backup is taken SYS user. Anyone doesn't have RECOVERY_CATALOG_OWNER role. I looked at crontab of oracle and root users, then I looked at dba_jobs. But I dont see anything about rman backup anywhere. I wonder who takes RMAN backup on my system?
Regards
İlke ALTINPULLUKhi,
I sent one of my audit files. Then I looked at baandb machine's crontab but I didnt find anything. Then I looked at dba_jobs on baandb. I didnt find anything.

Is it necessary to take RMAN backup for ASM
Hi all
I also know we need RMAN to take backup for ASM . But i also seen its possible to take backup by using dd command itself on ASM . Why we need RMAN rather than this method . What is the specific reason we using RMAN,its possible to take backup by using dd command itself on ASM Very bad idea.
1. You'll run into the classic "fractured block" issue when attempting a recover or reading a block after the restore
2. RMAN can be used to
a relocate individual datafiles,
b duplicate / clone database,
c restore to an alternate server,
d copy / move from ASM to filesystem
e verify for corruption
f generate reports on backups taken
None of which dd of ASM will do reliably (depending on the skills of the DBA/SA).

How to take RMAN backup through a single (default) channel
Sir,
In an interview I was asked a question that how can I allocate a single channel to multiple databases to take simultaneous backup. I was unanswer.
Pl. tell me if it is possible what will be the query with an example.
Regards
NeerajNo it's not at all possible to take backup of multiple database through the manually allocated channel.
Allocating the channel manually is only possible while running the commands in batch mode
eg. run {
allocate channel ch1 type disk format='/backup1/RMANBACKUP/PROD521_%s_%p';
allocate channel ch2 type disk format='/backup1/RMANBACKUP/PROD521_%s_%p';
backup database setsize=12582912;
release channel ch1;
release channel ch2;
And you can connect through single rman prompt to only one target database not more than that. So at any point of time you connect to only one database you can user channels to backup that database only.
connected to recovery catalog database

Can we take rman backup image copy to multiple location
Hi All,
We are planing to move database from old storage to new storage on the same server.
planing to use RMAN image copy to copy the db files from old storage to new storage and then switch database to copy.
Currently dbfiles are on /u01, /u02, /u03, /u04 and we are planing to move to new storage /u05, /u06/, /u07
Is there any way that i can copy all the dbfiles to /u05,/u06,/u07
Backup as copy database format '/u05
As i know i can move to single location. Is there any way copy to multiple location using image copy.
Please suggest.
ThanksHi
I will try the below command.
BACKUP AS COPY
DB_FILE_NAME_CONVERT ('/u01/..','/u05/...','/u02/...,','/u06/..')
database;
I believe this will work.

RMAN backups from Windows to Linux possible?
The company just bought a new PowerEdge 2900 w/ dual EM64T Core2 duos (yes that's quads) w/ 8GB RAM. We opted for RHEL ES4 and 9i. I figure the best way of transfering the data from the old machine to the new machine is RMAN. So is it possible to take RMAN backups made in 9.2.0.1 on Windows and restore in 9.2.0.7 (64bit) on RHEL ES4?
If not will export/import work?Not sure why 10g import/export came into the discussion, but some clarification is needed.
If the OP considers import/export, he (or she) would have to export with with the 9.2.0.1 exp executable and import with the 9.2.0.7 imp executable.
I agree with Mohamadi52,
exp -> 9i client
imp -> 9i or 10g clientThe OP wouldn't be able to use the 10g client to import into a 9.2.0.7 database.
how big is your database? Just curious if this offers other options? -

RMAN backup, restore across different versions
OS : Solaris 10
I have an RDBMS software only installation of 11.2.0.3 in a server ---> Server B
I have my source DB running on another server which is of version 11.2.0.1.0 -----> Server A
Is it possible to take RMAN backup of the source DB of version 11.2.0.1.0 and use it create a DB of 11.2.0.3.0 in server B ?
Is the same possible for 10.2.0.1.0 to 11.2.0.3.0 ?I believe its this
alter database open resetlogs upgrade;The startup has to be either MOUNT or NOMOUNT ( double checking )
Create a spfile and then
SQL*Plus: Release 11.2.0.3.0 Production on Fri Jul 13 15:33:24 2012
Copyright (c) 1982, 2011, Oracle. All rights reserved.
Connected to an idle instance.
SQL> startup nomounth2. Super example
See Levi Pereira's post here :
alter database open resetlogs upgrade ; throwing error

Rman backup with different retention
Hi,
I have to write script on RMAN backup retentions and policies.
My requirement is as below:
Daily backup Name and retentions : db_daily_bkp_sun,db_daily_bkp_mon...with 7 days retension
Weekly backup Name and retentions : db_wkly_bkp_01,db_wkly_bkp_02...with 4 backup retension
Monthly backup Name and retentions : db_mnth_bkp_jan,db_mnth_bkp_feb...with 12 backups
Yearly backup Name and retentions : db_yearly_bkp_2010,db_yearly_bkp_2011,db_yearly_bkp_2012
All backups will be full online. We have to store backups in local disk.
We have created backup locations on disk as below.
Daily : /orabackup/daily
Weekly : /orabackup/weekly
Monthly: /orabackup/monthly
Yearly : /orabackup/yearly
So is it possible to take such backups in RMAN without using any third party software ? If possible then please provide me such script.
With Regards,
Khokhar Murtuja S
Database AdministratorHi,
RMAN will make you have only one retention.
You can have more kind of retention using the option "keep until" in your backup command.
It'll certainly do what you need.

Regarding RMAN backup and recovery using archivelogs during cloning process
Hi there,
We are running 9i database (RAC) in archivelog mode.We are in the process of cloning DEVELOPMENT database using our PRODUCTION database.
For this we planned to take RMAN backup by keeping the production database in MOUNT stage.
In this regard, will it be possible to make use of archivelogs generated during and after this backup (in mount stage), after some days during recovery time, if it asks for recovery after cloning process.
Thanks,
Balu.Hi Alok,
why there is a need for standby here? you mean to say standby db?
what i exactly need is , whether i will be making use of archivelogs which are all archived during that backup period (in mount stage) after some days, if i face any problem with the PRODUCTION Database.. -
Rman backups in different OS?
Can we take rman backups from production and use them in developemnt database ?
The Os of production is Hp-UX and for develpment is windows.Take care: Cross platform transportable tablespaces are only available in 10g. Prior to this it was only possible when both platforms used the same OS.

To Confgure RMAN backup through Netvault
Hi All,
I have configured RMAN backup through a Net-Vault. Previously I was taking User Managed backup, Backup ran successfully. I have issues with RMAN Backup through NetVault.
The following is the error message received.
RMAN-00571: ===========================================================
: =============== ERROR MESSAGE STACK FOLLOWS ===============
RMAN-00571: ===========================================================
RMAN-00554: initialization of internal recovery manager package failed
RMAN-04005: error from target database:
ORA-01031: insufficient privileges
Failed with exit code 3
RMAN returned exit code 3
But when I take RMAN backup directly(Without Netvault) with that oracle user, I have no problem - Backup Runs properly.
What should I do to take Backup through NetVault.
Thanks In Advance,
Suresh S.No it's not at all possible to take backup of multiple database through the manually allocated channel.
Allocating the channel manually is only possible while running the commands in batch mode
eg. run {
allocate channel ch1 type disk format='/backup1/RMANBACKUP/PROD521_%s_%p';
allocate channel ch2 type disk format='/backup1/RMANBACKUP/PROD521_%s_%p';
backup database setsize=12582912;
release channel ch1;
release channel ch2;
And you can connect through single rman prompt to only one target database not more than that. So at any point of time you connect to only one database you can user channels to backup that database only.
connected to recovery catalog database
RMAN> CONN TARGET SYS/ORACLE@RMAN
RMAN> CONNECT TARGET SYS/ORACLE@RMAN
connected to target database: RMAN (DBID=1528877161)
RMAN> CONNECT TARGET SYS/ORACLE@CLS
RMAN-00571: ===========================================================
RMAN-00569: =============== ERROR MESSAGE STACK FOLLOWS ===============
RMAN-00571: ===========================================================
RMAN-06167: already connected

RMAN backup from remote pc !
Dear Friends ,
In my database Linux server I have no enough space to take RMAN backup since my database size around 90 GB .
So in this moment I want to take the rman backup form remote machine(From windows or Linux), where all the datafile backup of my Linux database server also goes to the remote machine . is it possible to do ?
Or is there any way to take RMAN backup(datafile,controlfile,spfile backup from server to client) from remote machine without increasing the HDD space of the Local server ?

Use third party tools like data-protector or use Oracle secure backup to make backups other than local server.
