Is it necessary to take RMAN backup for ASM

Hi all
I also know we need RMAN to take backup for ASM . But i also seen its possible to take backup by using dd command itself on ASM . Why we need RMAN rather than this method . What is the specific reason we using RMAN,

its possible to take backup by using dd command itself on ASM Very bad idea.
1. You'll run into the classic "fractured block" issue when attempting a recover or reading a block after the restore
2. RMAN can be used to
a relocate individual datafiles,
b duplicate / clone database,
c restore to an alternate server,
d copy / move from ASM to filesystem
e verify for corruption
f generate reports on backups taken
None of which dd of ASM will do reliably (depending on the skills of the DBA/SA).

I recently read through one of the document related to Unused compression in RMAN backup for 10.2.0.4 database. According to this
Unused Block Compression is done, if all of the following conditions apply:
+ The COMPATIBLE initialization parameter is set to 10.2
+ There are currently no guaranteed restore points defined for the database
+ The datafile is locally managed
+ The datafile is being backed up to a backup set as part of a full backup or a level 0 incremental backup
+ The backup set is being created on disk.
I have two queries
1) What is meant by "uaranteed restore points defined for the database"
2) If backup is being directly taken to tape, this feature would not be used

Who takes RMAN backup?

Hi all,
I have an oracle 9.2.0.7 database instance on SLES9 sp3 64bit. And RMAN backup is taken every day by one who is I dont know although I changed sys and system passwords. It seems that the backup is taken on local machine, doesn't it? I looked at v$session_longops view then I saw backup is taken SYS user. Anyone doesn't have RECOVERY_CATALOG_OWNER role. I looked at crontab of oracle and root users, then I looked at dba_jobs. But I dont see anything about rman backup anywhere. I wonder who takes RMAN backup on my system?

I sent one of my audit files. Then I looked at baandb machine's crontab but I didnt find anything. Then I looked at dba_jobs on baandb. I didnt find anything.

I Am not using oem, without oem you should write several scripts....
for linux hot backup(archive log enabled):
bck.sh
set ORACLE_SID=mydb
set ORACLE_HOME=....
rman target sys/.... @'.../bck.ora'
bck.ora
run
BACKUP AS COMPRESSED BACKUPSET FORMAT "..../db_%d_%T_%s_%p_%U.bak" INCREMENTAL LEVEL 0 DATABASE PLUS ARCHIVELOG DELETE INPUT FORMAT "...../archivelogBackup/arch_%d_%T_%s_%p_%U.bak";
delete force noprompt obsolete redundancy 3;
backup FORMAT '..../ctl_%d_%T_%s_%p_%U' current controlfile spfile;
And create executable job which instance_id=1 and will run your bck.sh script and create schedule for this job, when first node will down you must change instance_id attribute to second one, and be sure that all backup paths exists in all nodes.

Dear all
I like to take Rman backup into some other machine rather than its default storage location $oracle_home/dbs in to some other machine..
While i ran database backup in rman it stores the file sets into default location $ORACLE_HOME/dbs ... I relocated in to some other drivers in same machine also.. I got work ... But due to space issue i would like to take backup into some other machine so its possible ? how to configure it...

RMAN backup for two databases with similar DBID

We have two databases with SID 'uiivc' and 'uiivc1' running from one of the HP Unix 11.11 PA-RISC server. I did configured RMAN backup for both databases. But it is found that both databases have same DBID [connected to target database: UIIVC (DBID=3005194057) for UIIVC & connected to target database: UIIVC1 (DBID=3005194057) for UIIVC1] and backup configured via crontab seen running fine with full backup at weekend and archivelog backup at daily for both databases. Now my query is that will it create any issues at time of restoration since both databases have similar DBID? Does RMAN uses DBID to distinguish databases?

UIIVC database:

RMAN Backups for archive logs

Hi,
We are taking daily backups using BCV's and archive backup to tapes using RMAN. Please note we are using RMAN only for archive backups.
We are changing our backup strategy and I need below information on RMAN.
1) Is there any benefit I will be getting if I use RMAN for archive backups ( like finding the courruption in the logs,health of the archive) etc? Any reference note for this would be great.
2) If I use multiplexing of archives using LOG_ ARCHIVE_DEST & LOG_ ARCHIVE_DUPLEX_DEST with this I want RMAN to take the backup of archives and delete from one location only ( Say from LOG_ ARCHIVE_DEST ). And I want the archives in LOG_ ARCHIVE_DUPLEX_DEST to maintain on my own ( Like different purge strategy to zip and keep for 7 days in this location.
If I use command "backup archivelog all delete input" it is picking and removing radomly from either of these locations. Is there a way I can configure RMAN so that it will not touch my secondary locaton?

You can use validate backupset command to check the health of backup.

It appears that you have created a parfile for the export utility and NOT for RMAN. The basic command to backup a tablespace in RMAN is:
RMAN> BACKUP TABLESPACE USERS;If you are looking to actually export a tablespace, you can save the following to a file called user_parfile.txt
userid=system
file=d:\user_exp.dmp
log=d:\user_exp.log
tablespaces=users
buffer=81920and execute as:
exp parfile=d:\user_parfile.txt

How to take RMAN backup through a single (default) channel

In an interview I was asked a question that how can I allocate a single channel to multiple databases to take simultaneous backup. I was unanswer.
Pl. tell me if it is possible what will be the query with an example.

No it's not at all possible to take backup of multiple database through the manually allocated channel.
Allocating the channel manually is only possible while running the commands in batch mode
eg. run {
allocate channel ch1 type disk format='/backup1/RMANBACKUP/PROD521_%s_%p';
allocate channel ch2 type disk format='/backup1/RMANBACKUP/PROD521_%s_%p';
backup database setsize=12582912;
release channel ch1;
release channel ch2;
And you can connect through single rman prompt to only one target database not more than that. So at any point of time you connect to only one database you can user channels to backup that database only.

RMAN Backup with ASM and Standby in place

Hi All,
We are planning to upgrade our database from 10.2.0.2 to 10.2.0.3. We have ASM as storage on primary and phisical standby is in place.
I want to make a cut of point for backup, i.e if I restore till that poit on primary standby should continue to work. I need not create standby.
We are using rman for backup and primary db uses asm for data,archive and redolog storage.
I have a online complete db backup at 12:00PM. At say 6:00pm i take primary down and apply all archives on standby and cancel recovery on standby along with taking it down. On primary i mount db and take controlfile backup and all archive log backup using rman.
Now i continue with upgrade and many more changes on primary. I will not touch standby. We decide to revertback at 10pm on primary. If I wan to return back to 6:00pm state on primary and standby.
I believe I will restore controlfile backup taken at 6:00pm with db in mount phase. Restore dbfiles from online backup and recover using archives.
My question is do i need to open with resetlogs? Then I will lose my standby which was up to date at 6:00pm. Can I not backup redofiles at 6:00pm with db in mount phase and i restore them then i need not open with reset logs and my stnadby will continue from that point.
Please guide me..Is there way to backup redologs when db is in mount phase and using asm for storage using rman.

There are quite a bunch of steps involved and you need to do some documentation reading.
Do you plan to create the test database on the same machine or different RAC system?
Which version of Oracle are you using? What OS?
There is plenty of information on the web if you search for "duplicate database RAC ASM". Did you try?

Restoring RMAN Backup from ASM RAC env to Non ASM standalone environment

Can anyone please tell me how to restore database using RMAN in a Non ASM environment as my backup file with ASM RAC environment.

You can set the parameter db_file_name_convert in init.ora in you new database with [ID 47325.1]
or
you can set parameter "set newname" in your script rman. [ID 549972.1]
if you have one or two destinations of dbfiles in ASM I seggest to you set parameter db_file_name_convert in init.
example:
db_file_name_convert=('+DGDATA','/u01/oradata/');
remenber you need set log_file_name_convert to.
log_file_name_convert=('+DGREDO','/u01/redo/');
if you use "set newname" commands you need set this lines in your script rman.
set newname for datafile 1 to '/u01/oradata/system01.dbf';
set newname for datafile 2 to '/u01/oradata/undotbs01.dbf';
set newname for datafile 3 to '/u01/oradata/sysaux01.dbf';
set newname for datafile 4 to '/u01/oradata/users01.dbf';
and every datafiles you need set!

RMAN Backup to ASM and DISK Multiple Locations

Hi
We currently have a RAC database that backs up to the Flash Recovery Area on ASM.
Is there any way of backing up to ASM and Local Disk at the same time? I know you can configure multiple locations but what is the syntax to backup to ASM?
I've seen the line
format '/disk1/......','/disk2/.....' etc which backs upto multiple locations.
Is ASM just '+data/......' ?

as you said, use the ASM path in the format scope.
also if you want to backup the DBF's as is(not a backup set) - use:
backup as copy database;
