Is it safe to edit while compressor is encoding?

so now apparently we can edit while compressor does its thing but before wasn't that a bad idea cause editing can cause compressor to hick-up and screw up the encode??? am i crazy here?

As long as you have enough RAM installed (I'd think 4 gigs is enough for most situations) you shouldn't have any problems running compressor in the background. I've been doing it for a very long time here by exporting movies from FCP first. What's new is you can do it directly from FCP is all.

I'm compressing for a DVD now and its going to take another five hours to finish up. I need to switch user accounts to access info from an email and a few documents from another user account. Is it safe to switch accounts while compressor is doing its thing?

I've never tried it, but as long as you don't log out it should continue to compress.

When I try to edit the layout of an data object I'm getting the error: BAM-04003: Data objects cannot be edited while they are in use.
I have the Active Viewer and Studio closed.
How can I do this?

Plans are not supported in 11g. Look if there are any alerts are defined on the data object that you are trying to edit.
Go to BAM Architect - Alerts page
or Go to BAM ACtiveStudio - Alerts tab.

I'm not clear what you are saying here. Since for S&T versions registration is mandatory, you have a permanent serial on your account and those function just liek any normal serial number of a comemrcial package.

I don't think you can prevent email body text from being copied and edited.
You'd probably need to created a protected Word or PDF document, and send it as an attachment.
This is still some sort of guessing because it's still not clear to me what exactly your scenario is.
Whatever text you send in an email, regardless of whether in the body or as an attachment, the recipient will always be able to use that and distribute it further, e.g. by making a screenshot. And images can be 'photoshoped' as well.
If you want the recipient to be able to detect whether a message or an attachment has been altered on transit, you'd need to sign it.

IMOVIE 6 won't recognize DV camera while IDVD is encoding or burning

I am in the process of encoding and burning a dvd in idvd 6. Given the length of this process, I want to also import some video into an imovie 6 project. However, while idvd is encoding, imovie won't recognize my camera.
I understand I can stop idvd, but then will I lose the encoding that has already occurred?
Will imove recognize the camera if I launch idvd after beginning the import into imovie?
Is there a software fix that will prevent idvd from monopolizing the firewire port when it is just encoding video from an imovie project?
This is a very irritating conflict given the time encoding takes in idvd.

As Sue suggests, it's not surprising that iDVD doesn't want you to access the camera with iMovie. It's not unusual for applications that perform FireWire-intensive functions—as both iDVD and iMovie do—to want to control the device. If iDVD can't control the camera, it may not be able to perform a task you want it to do. (Remember, iDVD offers several camcorder-dependent functions, including OneStep DVDs.)
While it may be a bit treacherous, you CAN go behind iDVD's back to get it done. The trick is to grab control of the camera before iDVD does. So Quit iDVD after you create, then save the iDVD project, then grab control of the camera with an iMovie HD project, THEN re-open the iDVD project and start encoding. (I tested exporting the iDVD project to a disk image, which is probably safer than burning a physical DVD. Use Disk Utility later to burn the disk image to a physical DVD.)
The iMovie video looked fine here, but your mileage may vary.

Are the problems with Compressor's encoding fixed yet?

Sorry for the slightly vague title but I only use compressor once a year basically, which is after the production of a Christmas show I produce. Last year I upgraded ot Final Cut Studio to do the DVD and got caught out. I encoded using what I thought was the best setting (2 pass variable bit rate) and got jittery encoding. After investigating on this very forum, I found lots of comments about known problems with Compressor's encoding in this setting and ended up re encoding using one pass which was "ok".
I'd rather do the best job I can so the basic question is, "is it fixed yet". Keeping in mind I understand about altering settings so that I can get the time I need onto one disc (110 minutes unfortunately!) What setting will offer me the best possible picture quality, regardless of encoding time, with compressor? Many, many thaks for any advice you regular user can offer!!

I am in the middle of a long render using Compressor 4.0.4... but would ideally like to get on with editing our next program.
Should I be able to continue working with FCPx while rendering?

Yes. You can go ahead and work. responsiveness may or may not be quite as snappy as you're used to, but it should be fine.

LR4.2 issue unable to edit while syncing batches

Just updated to 4.2, Im noticing that when batch syncing in my catalogue, eg, for lens corrections, it seems that I can no longer continue to edit other aspects of my images. Previously I was able to continue with edit my workflow while the sync was working away in the background. It's really annoying because it means that it takes an age by the time I have imported, rendered, then batch lens corrections, noise, sharpening etc. Is there a fix for this and has anyone else noticed this?

I had the same problem, but just posted a new response when I couldn't edit a previous response.
Not ideal, but the new forum at least runs much better on iOS than the previous version of the forums.

Editing While Loop Conditions hangs JDeveloper 10.1.3

Hi Guys,
Having a strange problem when I tried to edit the condition in a while loop after it was created and set first time. The IDE just hanged when I tried to open the expression builder and after a while, nothing happened, the expression builder didn't show up.
I went and deleted the condition by editing the source, basically made condition from:

Switched back to graphics mode, the expression builder opens up normally.
I understand that we are evaluation a Developers Preview, so just wanted to bring this to the notice of the developers.
Any solutions before the Production release?

BAM-04003: Data objects cannot be edited while they are in use.

This message is shown when, while Active Studio is opened, I open Architect and I try to edit a data object layout.
So I close both, do logout and try again, this time only with the Architect open, but the message is shown again.
Why this occur? What to do to solve this "bug"?

Problem solved!
It was not a "bug". I'd created an alert and it was activated. This blocks the data objects editing.
Deactivated the alert, I can edit normally.

Can't Edit While Encoding With Media Encoder

Does anyone else get this happening to them:
When I begin the encoding process with Media Encoder, then go back to editing in Premiere Pro CC, EVERY time I hit the space bar to play a clip, Media Encoder Pauses its Encoding. Then when I stop playing the clip in Premiere Pro, Encoder begins encoding again. I'm fairly positive that Adobe touts that you can be encoding and editing at the same time, but I can't believe that this is happening. Anyone else?
Also, Encoder refuses to use my destination folder preference, instead targeting a folder I had used long ago and I have to manually target for every encode, every day.

Encoding is a real CPU/disc hog ... heh, it's an intensive process. Trying to both encode and playback in real-time ... um ... if you've got a rig with say four CPU's with 128GB RAM, two really hot v-cards that the Adobe program actually love to play with, and all programs/cache/footage/outputs on RAIDed SSD internal drives, you can maybe do both at the same time.
Think about what playback is doing ... it's not just playing the video off the disc ... not hardly. It's taking bits of video from this spot on the disk, skipping to this section of another video file there, to that one here ... and while doing that it's also immediately "reading" whatever changes you've made in editing, whether sound, size changes, color/grading, masks, EVERYTHING ... and applying that to the video it's grabbing of a disc somewhere AS it is playing it. Using a ton of CPU, disc read/write throughput, and probably a chunk of the v-card's GPU & vRAM. What's left for AME to use?
I've seen a lot of complaints around here as to why editing playback isn't smooth ... hey, in VLC, play that file, it plays back easy, what the * is PrPro doing?
Um ... VLC is playing the "straight" file, PrPro is playing back the file with all the other stuff added to it ... which isn't yet added to the file in reality, it's only instructions as to what to do to the file. So ... PrPro is essentially doing much the same work as when AME renders to an output simply to play the file in the program monitor.

Adding text (editing) while using Adobe on an iPad

Can I make Adobe allow me to edit or add text while doing so on my iPad? I cannot figure it out yet, my laptop is easy to do this with.

You can add or edit Text annotations in Adobe Reader for iOS.
Open a PDF document.
Tap the Comment icon in the top bar.
Tap the Text annotation icon in the bottom bar.
Tap where you want to add text.
Enter text in the popup window.
Tap Save.

Replace Edit while preserving transition

Hi all,
I am trying to figure out how to replace a clip on the timeline with another clip.
The first clip already in the sequence has a transition on it.
Is there any way - besides copying the new clip and pasting attributes (content) to the old clip - to overwrite the new with the old while keeping the trasition?

well you could use the the replace edit function (F11)
position the playhead in the timeline over the clip you want to replace.
load the replacement clip in the viewer
press F11
note that neither the clip in the timeline nor the clip in the viewer need or will reference and in or out markers. clip placement is dictated solely by the playhead position whereby the clip in the viewer will replace the clip in the timeline such that the playhead position is maintained
