Is it safe to post one .log file?

Hi, I have a very basic question, so hopefully not laugh at me
Is it safe to post one. log file of the folder /var /log/?, I was wondering this, because they are often very long to read completely.
Do these files show some kind of private information or passwords?
hoping she would not laugh at me, thanks in advance
sorry for my English

You can post the tail of log material using the code tags - or, if it is a particularly long file, use a pastebin service:
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Fo … s_and_Code
Nevertheless, you should always check anything that you are posting to make sure it doesn't contain any information that you would be unwilling to have in the public domain.

  • One Log File With Tomcat

    I am trying to figure out how to get all of my logging to use one log file. Currently when I start tomcat as a service it writes to stderr.log, stdout.log as well as a log file I have configured using Log4j. I would like all logs including startup/shutdown logs that are currently going to stdout.log/stderr.log to go to the file I write to using Log4j.
    If I start tomcat using catalina.bat it doesn't do this (bc it writes to the console window) but I would like to send all those startup/shutdown messages to the log that Log4j uses if I start tomcat as a service.
    Any help would be appreciated.

    That doesn't really help, because I've got Log4j already running. It looks like there is no easy solution to this. I'm left with choosing one of the three options below.
    1) Configure a <Logger> element for the Context that catches any logging not sent to the Log4j log file. This means I would have a stdout.log, stderr.log, log from the <Logger> element, and a log for Log4j. That's a lot of log files...
    2) Not configure a <Logger> element for the Context. This means any logging not sent to the Log4j file will go to either stdout.log or stderr.log. Those files could get big and aren't rotated like my Log4j file. Not exactlly ideal either.
    3) Don't install Tomcat through the .exe file. Unpackage it, set the environment variables, and set it up as a serivce through a script such as the one mentioned at http://weblogs.java.net/blog/simongbrown/archive/2003/09/installing_tomc.html setting the same file that Log4j uses for the -out and -err parameters. This means that all logging (startup/shutdown) will go to this one log file. But it also means messing with the install (deviating from the .exe) which scares me a little.
    Unless someone has a better idea...I guess it's one of the three above.
    Thanks,
    Jim

  • Repeated Flash CS6 crash. Where do I post error log files?

    Hello there.
    I've been looking and searching here and on Google and, despite the error alert encouraging me to post the (no several times repeated) error log file,  I cannot find WHERE I am supposed to post them. Anyone have any ideas?
    Cheers.

  • Java.util.logging: write to one log file from many application (classes)

    I have a menuapp to launch many applications, all running in same JVM and i want to add logging information to them, using java.util.logging.
    Intention is to redirect the logginginfo to a specific file within the menuapp. Then i want all logging from all applications written in same file. Finally, if needed (but i don't think it is), i will include code to write logging to specific file per app (class). The latter is probably not neccessary because there are tools to analyse the logging-files and allow to select filters on specific classes only.
    The applications are in their own packages/jars and contain following logging-code:
            // Redirect error output
            try {
                myHandler = new FileHandler("myLogging.xml",1000000,2);
            } catch (IOException e) {
              System.out.println("Could not create file. Using the console handler");
            myLogger.addHandler(myHandler);
            myLogger.info("Our first logging message");
            myLogger.severe("Something terrible happened");
            ...When i launch the menuapplication, it writes info to "myLogging.xml.0"
    but when i launch an application, the app writes info to "myLogging.xml.0.1"
    I already tried to leave out the creation of a new Filehandler (try/catch block in code above) but it doesn't help.
    Is it possible to write loginfo to same specific file?

    You should open/close it somehow at every write from different processes.
    But I personally prefer different file names to your forced merging, though.

  • Multiple sites, and domains, only one log file is working

    I have a custom install of Entropy latest version for apache 1.3
    OS X 10.4.5 on an Xserve dual g5
    Everything is running fantastic save for one thing.
    The sites that I have set up for multiple domains and multiple websites only the site that is in the top of the List in Server Administration under Web and so forth... I have the top site (which is our own site) and the others under that gain no hits and stats information because everything is being logged under the top site. Does this make sense?
    I use Awstats to generate information for the various sites but only the top site generates hits and it gets the information for everything.
    I am using entropy because I needed a level of security to avoid spammers on our guestbook and contact forms and entropy has the ability to use turing test.
    Our various sites are now requesting custom stats and information but cannot get this to work. I have set different file names for each of the sites logs both hits and error log.
    What do I need to check and what information can I supply to you from my custom install that will help you help me get this working.
    Thank you everyone for your help.

    Add me to the "me too" list.
    Could it have anything to do with the difference between a "local host aliases" and "virtual hosting"? Or is that just related to Mail service?
    Maybe it belongs in another thread, but what are most folks using for log analysis? I've got 40 or so virtually hosted domains that I'd like to track so I can kill the sites that aren't doing my company any good...

  • Why multiple  log files are created while using transaction in berkeley db

    we are using berkeleydb java edition db base api, we have already read/write CDRFile of 9 lack rows with transaction and
    without transaction implementing secondary database concept the issues we are getting are as follows:-
    with transaction----------size of database environment 1.63gb which is due to no. of log files created each of 10 mb.
    without transaction-------size of database environment 588mb and here only one log file is created which is of 10mb. so we want to know how REASON CONCRETE CONCLUSION ..
    how log files are created and what is meant of using transaction and not using transaction in db environment and what are this db files db.001,db.002,_db.003,_db.004,__db.005 and log files like log.0000000001.....plz reply soon

    we are using berkeleydb java edition db base api, If you are seeing __db.NNN files in your environment root directory, these are environment's shared region files. And since you see these you are using Berkeley DB Core (with the Java/JNI Base API), not Berkeley DB Java Edition.
    with transaction ...
    without transaction ...First of all, do you need transactions or not? Review the documentation section called "Why transactions?" in the Berkeley DB Programmer's Reference Guide.
    without transaction-------size of database environment 588mb and here only one log file is created which is of 10mb.There should be no logs created when transactions are not used. That single log file has likely remained there from the previous transactional run.
    how log files are created and what is meant of using transaction and not using transaction in db environment and what are this db files db.001,db.002,_db.003,_db.004,__db.005 and log files like log.0000000001Have you reviewed the basic documentations references for Berkeley DB Core?
    - Berkeley DB Programmer's Reference Guide
    in particular sections: The Berkeley DB products, Shared memory regions, Chapter 11. Berkeley DB Transactional Data Store Applications, Chapter 17. The Logging Subsystem.
    - Getting Started with Berkeley DB (Java API Guide) and Getting Started with Berkeley DB Transaction Processing (Java API Guide).
    If so, you would have had the answers to these questions; the __db.NNN files are the environment shared region files needed by the environment's subsystems (transaction, locking, logging, memory pool buffer, mutexes), and the log.MMMMMMMMMM are the log files needed for recoverability and created when running with transactions.

  • How to add a log file to an MaxDB?

    I see that we have only one log file there. I want to add more. Please help either the syntax or the GUI menu path.  Thanks!

    Hi Linda,
    of course the topic is covered in the MaxDB documentation (e.g. here http://maxdb.sap.com/documentation/)
    [Adding Log Volumes|http://maxdb.sap.com/doc/7_7/0c/b9bc43f7b24eef9afff1968bf4fcdc/content.htm]
    However, you should be really sure that you actually need to add a volume to the log area.
    Usually this is not the case.
    Most often, people believe they should add a log volume when they should run a log backup.

  • While Recovery  log files are not displayed in recovery mode

    Hi Folks,
    These days i am performing backup recovery testing for maxdb.
    Maxdb 7.7
    I am having one doubt please help me out to clear that.
    Scenario is like this:
    I have taken a  complete Data Backup.
    After that some data inserted and one log file created .Some transaction's are in log area (Online Logs) not written to the log file(Offline logs).
    When i am performing recovery using recovery mode in that mode it is not showing the log files those are required to be restored at the time of recovery.
    [recovery_mode|http://www.freeuploadimages.org/images/fdsnjrndfbr9ftfnco9.jpg]
    After recovery it is showing me the data as it was their before the recovery.
    When i am going with recovery with initialization option in that it is showing the logs those will be restored while performing the recovery.
    [recovery_with_initilization|http://www.freeuploadimages.org/images/emupbqyhfunqe9q00yd3.jpg]
    After recovery with initialization it  had recovered until it found the data in logs.
    My doubt is why in recovery mode it is not showing the log file's those are required to be recovered as it is showing in case of recovery with initialization.
    In Recovery mode is it not recovering from the offline log files.....?
    If yes than from where it is restoring the data inserted in DB  after the complete backup.
    As per my understanding in recovery mode it will perform recovery in the below steps.(Increment backup's i am not taking)
    1.Complete Data Recovery.
    2.All the log files will be applied.(Offline logfile)
    *3.Log's available in the Log Area will be applied.(Online Log file) *

    Hello Sahil,
    please check the documentation and the expert sessions before trying out this stuff.
    The reason for MaxDB not asking for any log backups after you've modified a few records is, that we don't throw away the log data when a log backup is made.
    Instead we keep track of which log information is still available for recovery in the log area and use this during recovery, instead of trying to get the data from the log backup.
    As soon as the log data is lost (because it's overwritten or the log area was deleted as it is the case for a recovery with initialization) MaxDB of course has to ask for the log backups - and it does so.
    But really - go and check the documentation and the expert sessions (maybe also my own blogs on this topic) about this.
    regards,
    Lars

    Any bory nows how remove all log files at application end ?
    I really need this. How can i do that in C++ ?

    Here's how I solved it
    // At end of app.
    // Commit tables.

    pdbUser     ->sync(0);
    // Close tables.
    pdbParam     ->close(0);

  • Applet cause to browser crash with hs_err_pid log file on desktop

    Hi there,
    We have a web based application which is initiating an other applet application inside, and communicating with the applet over live-connect javascript calls.
    Sometimes when initating the applet, it causes to crash of the browser and leaves a file on the desktop named like hs_err_pid.log.
    If it occurs once a time for a user , it will allways happen until logoff and login back to windows.
    We think that, it may be about some registry settings for the Java plug-in, because re-login may solve the problem.
    And we seen that it mostly happens when another Java application running at the same time or just before, on PC.
    Our environment is, Windows XP Pro. SP2, IE6 SP2 and Java 1.4.2_17.
    I appreciate if someone can help us to understand what is the problem ( I have post a log file sample below), and the solution ?

  • Routing logs to individual log file in multi rules_file MaxL

    Hi Gurus,
    I have been pretty late to this forum after long time. I have a situation here, and trying to find out the best way for operational benefits.
    We have an ASO cube (Historical) keeps 24 months snapshot data and refreshed monthly just like last 24 months rolling. The cube size is around 18.5 GB. The input level data size is around 13 GB. For monthly refresh the current process rebuilds the cube from scratch, deletes the 1/24 snapshot as it is going to add last months snapshot. The entire process takes 13 hours of processing time becuase the server doesn't have number of CPUs to support parallel operations.
    Since we recently moved to 11.1.2.3, and have ample amounts of CPUs(8) and RAM (16gb), I'd like to take davantage of parallelism, and will go for incremental load. Prior to that since the outline build is EPMA driven I'd only like to rebuild the dimension with all data, essentially restructures the DB, with data after metadata refresh, so that I can keep my history intact, and only proceed for loading the last month's data after clearing out the 1st snapshot.
    My MaxL script looks like below:
    /* Set up logs */
    set timestamp on;
    spool on to $(mxlLog).log;
    /* Connect to Essbase */
    login $key $essUser $key $essPwd on $essServer;
    alter application "$essApp" load database "$essDB";
    /* Disable User Access to DB */
    alter application "$essApp" disable connects;
    /* Unlock all objects */
    alter database "$essApp"."$essDB" unlock all objects;
    /* Clear all data for previous month*/
    alter database "$essApp"."$essDB" clear data in region 'CrossJoin({([ACTUAL])},{[&CLEAR_PERIOD]})' physical;
    /* Load SQL Data */
    import database "$essApp"."$essDB" data connect as $key $edsUser identified by $key $edsPwd using multiple rules_file 'LOADDATA','LOADJNLS','LOADFX','LOAD_J1','LOAD_J2','LOAD_J3','LOADDELQ' to load_buffer_block starting with buffer_id 1 on error write to "$(mxlLog)_LOADDATA.err";
    /* Selects and build an aggregation that permits the database to grow by no more than 300% */
    execute aggregate process on database "$essApp"."$essDB" stopping when total_size exceeds 4 enable alternate_rollups;
    /* build query tracking views */
    execute aggregate build on database "$essApp"."$essDB" using view_file 'gw';
    /* Enable Query Tracking */
    alter database "$essApp"."$essDB" enable query_tracking;
    /* Enable User Access to DB */
    alter application "$essApp" enable connects;
    logout;
    exit;
    I am able to achive performance but not satisfactory. So I have couple of queries below.
    1. Whether bule shaded codes can further be tuned. I have major problem in clearing only 1 month snapshot : where I require to clear one scenario and the designated 1st month.
    2. Multiple rules_file statement, how do I write logs of each load rule to separte log files instead one, my previous process is wrting error-log for each load rule in separte log file and consolidates at the end of batch run to a single file for the whole batch execution.
    Apprecaite any help in this regrad.
    Thanks,
    DD

    Thanks Celvin. I'd rather route MaxL logs in one log file and consolidate into the batch logs instead of using
    multiple log files.
    Regrading Partial Clear:
    My worry is, I first tried partial clear with 'logical', that too took considerable amonut of time, and the
    difference between logical and physical clear is only 15-20 minutes. FYI, I have 31 dimensions in this cube,
    and the MDX clear script that use Scenario->ACTUAL and Period->&CLEAR_PERIOD (SubVar) is of dynamic hierarchy
    type.
    Is there a way I can rewrite the clear data MDX script in betterway  so that it will clear faster, than this
    <<CrossJoin({([ACTUAL])},{[&CLEAR_PERIOD]})>>
    Does this clear MDX have any effect on dynamic/stored hierarchy nature of the dimension, if not, then what
    would be optimized way to write this MDX?
    Thanks,
    DD

  • Can't create log file with java.util.logging

    Hi,
    I have created a class to create a log file with java.util.logging
    This class works correctly as standalone (without jdev/weblogic)
    import java.io.IOException;
    import java.text.DateFormat;
    import java.text.SimpleDateFormat;
    import java.util.Date;
    import java.util.logging.*;
    public class LogDemo
         private static final Logger logger = Logger.getLogger( "Logging" );
         public static void main( String[] args ) throws IOException
             Date date = new Date();
             DateFormat dateFormat = new SimpleDateFormat("yyyyMMdd");
             String dateStr = dateFormat.format(date);
             String logFileName = dateStr + "SEC" + ".log";
             Handler fh;
             try
               fh = new FileHandler(logFileName);
               //fh.setFormatter(new XMLFormatter());
               fh.setFormatter(new SimpleFormatter());
               logger.addHandler(fh);
               logger.setLevel(Level.ALL);
               logger.log(Level.INFO, "Initialization log");
               // force a bug
               ((Object)null).toString();
             catch (IOException e)
                  logger.log( Level.WARNING, e.getMessage(), e );
             catch (Exception e)
                  logger.log( Level.WARNING, "Exception", e);
    }But when I use this class...
    import java.io.File;
    import java.io.IOException;
    import java.text.DateFormat;
    import java.text.SimpleDateFormat;
    import java.util.Date;
    import java.util.logging.FileHandler;
    import java.util.logging.Handler;
    import java.util.logging.Level;
    import java.util.logging.Logger;
    import java.util.logging.XMLFormatter;
    public class TraceUtils
      public static Logger logger = Logger.getLogger("log");
      public static void initLogger(String ApplicationName) {
        Date date = new Date();
        DateFormat dateFormat = new SimpleDateFormat("yyyyMMdd");
        String dateStr = dateFormat.format(date);
        String logFileName = dateStr + ApplicationName + ".log";
        Handler fh;
        try
          fh = new FileHandler(logFileName);
          fh.setFormatter(new XMLFormatter());
          logger.addHandler(fh);
          logger.setLevel(Level.ALL);
          logger.log(Level.INFO, "Initialization log");
        catch (IOException e)
          System.out.println(e.getMessage());
    }and I call it in a backingBean, I have the message in console but the log file is not created.
    TraceUtils.initLogger("SEC");why?
    Thanks for your help.

    I have uncommented this line in logging.properties and it works.
    # To also add the FileHandler, use the following line instead.
    handlers= java.util.logging.FileHandler, java.util.logging.ConsoleHandlerBut I have another problem:
    jdev ignore the parameters of the FileHandler method .
    And it creates a general log file with anothers log files created each time I call the method logp.
    So I play with these parameters
    fh = new FileHandler(logFileName,true);
    fh = new FileHandler(logFileName,0,1,true);
    fh = new FileHandler(logFileName,10000000,1,true);without succes.
    I want only one log file, how to do that?

  • Re: identifying server log file when runningdistributed

    Hi John, I can give you some TOOL code which will get the process
    id, but I do have to stray outside of Framework :-). The following
    code uses classes from the SystemMonitor project which was
    introduced in release 2 of Forte (this code won't work on R1):
    partAgent : SystemAgent;
    pidInst : ConfigValueInst;
    pid : TextData;
    partAgent = SystemAgent(task.Part.Agent);
    pidInst = ConfigValueInst(partAgent.FindInstrument('ProcessId');
    pid = TextData(pidInst.GetData);
    The result is that the variable pid contains the process id in string form.
    This could be converted to numeric form if needed.
    If what you're really after is the partition's log file name, then the following
    code will do the trick (it takes into account the differences in how the log
    files are named for interpreted vs. compiled partitions):
    partAgent : SystemAgent;
    logFileInst : ConfigValueInst;
    logFileName : TextData;
    -- Get our agent and try to get the log file inst
    partAgent = SystemAgent(task.Part.Agent);
    logFileInst = ConfigValueInst(partAgent.FindInstrument('LogFile');
    -- Interpreted partition don't have their own log file, so check
    if (logFileInst = NIL) then
    pidInst : ConfigValueInst;
    pid : TextData;
    -- We must be an interpreted partition get our pid
    pidInst = ConfigValueInst(partAgent.FindInstrument('ProcessId');
    pid = TextData(pidInst.GetData);
    -- Build log file name
    logFileName = 'forte_ex_';
    logFileName.Concat(pid);
    else
    -- Get the name of the log file from the instrument
    logFileName = TextData(logFileInst.GetData);
    end;
    The available agents and their instruments and commands are documented
    in the manual "SystemMonitor Project". I'm at home now, so I don't have
    the page numbers. Some additional agents (which were added after this
    manual went to press) can be found in Tech Note #10475. Also, econsole
    and escript can be handy since any instrument you can see in these tools
    can be accessed from TOOL code. Hope this is of some use.

    written out to log files on the server partition. However it is sometimes a
    trick trying to identify the process which is running your individual
    partitions, and
    thus knowing which log file to read.
    At one client, we added a 3gl call-out to obtain the process id and return it

    Sequent (3gl wrappering difficult in statically linked environments such as

    I have not yet seen a way to programmatically obtain the process ID for a

    What kinds of strategies are folks employing out there?

    Hi John,
    I think that Sean Fits answered your question about TOOL code to get the PID
    number. I just want to complement on the loging strategy.
    There is one log file for every active partition of an application. I think
    it is useful in some cases that a distributed application gets a centralized
    log file to trace the exact sequential flow of processing among all the
    partitions. This is useful during the initial debuging and tuning. In fact
    something similar to the UNIX syslog file.
    For doing so it is easy to implement a custom central log Mgr in one
    partition and to have all partitions use it when needed (it doesn't prevent
    to continue using the standard LogMgr in addition). This central LogMgr
    automatically adds the date&time plus the node name, partition name, ... to
    the log messages it receives.
    The flags which apply are those of the partition where the central Log Mgr is.
    Because of potential concurency requests from the several partitions
    accessing the central Log Mgr, it is not possible to support the "Put" and
    PutHex" methods. Only complete lines can be logged (Putline and PutHexLine).
    Attached is the TOOL code of my TraceService plan that implements it.
    Remark : the "Phr" in the names relate to the name of the application we
    have here under development.
    To use the central Log Mgr, a partition must create an object of class
    PartitionLog, and then log messages must be sent to it the way you send them
    to the standard LogMgr; it will manage to send them to the central Log Mgr.

  • Jafa log file is suplicated each time the process is run

    Hi all,
    I am trying to create a file logger,,Following is part of my coding.
    Now I can see the log file being created. However my problem is that every time I run the process the log is appended to the test.log file correctly. But the problem is that it also create test.log.1, test.log.2.. etc files each time the process is run. It will be great if anyone advise me how to eleminate these extra files being generated each time. I need just one log file to be genereted and all the logs to be appended to it.
    boolean append = true;
    FileHandler handler = new FileHandler(test.log);
    SimpleFormatter simpleFormatter = new SimpleFormatter();
    handler.setFormatter(simpleFormatter);
    logger.addHandler(handler);Thanks in adavance

    Are you saying that it is creating new logs AND appending to the other one? That doesn't seem quite right.
