Is it worth it to replace the hard drive of a brand new macbook?

I'm buying a Macbook today and realize it would be cheaper to buy the 160gb laptop, and switch out the hard drive to a 320 gb (its only $76, compared to the $300 difference between the 160gb macbook and the 250gb macbook).
I picked out the hard drive and I know where the hard drive in my laptop will be located, and how to remove and replace it. However I'm a little worried about actually doing it. I wouldn't need to back anything up because I haven't used it before, so can I just replace the hard drive before I ever even turn it on for the first time?
Also, I've never done this before..
What are the risks I'm taking by doing this?

Try this:
1. Place order for DIY (external enclosure kit + HD) kit.
2. While waiting for delivery, enjoy your MacBook.
3. When kit arrives, back up your MacBook to DVDs!! You know how, right?
4. Swap drives. Careful, you'll need to swap the 4 mounting pins from the current HD to the new one. Our current HD uses hex-keyed pins. And the kit came with enough screws, right?
5. Install "old" HD from MacBook into enclosure (FireWire 800 (zoom!) for Pros, USB for Not Pros). You did order the right one, right? And it came with the right cables, right?
5a. Boot 'Book from that external device (you know how, right?). Maybe not as fast via that cable, hm?
6. Restore to the new internal HD and now reboot from it. Check that all is well before . . .
7. . . . erasing "old" HD in new enclosure. Your backup was fine, right?
8 (and last). Use "old" HD in enclosure as your Time Machine device. What could be better? Continue to use DVDs to back up the whole Mac. (Though there are even cooler ways to bulletproof it . . .)
With Leopard's tools, and these new Macs, geekery will never be the same. It's insanely easy to keep your stuff safe and sound for not that much $$. So gofer it!

Can I replace the hard drive on a mid 2012 MacBook Pro?

I just bought a new MacBook Pro. I had a 2010 MBP and kept the hard drive (Hitachi 500gb 7200 rpm) from that computer. It ws running 10.7 and worked fine. It still boots up perfectly on my MacPro so I know it works.
I tried to boot the new MacBook Pro using the old drive but I get a circle with a line through it. I have tried to boot using Firewire and even installed it into the new MacBook Pro. I then tried to re-install OS 10.7. I just downloaded it from the App Store for my MacPro so I tried to use it to re-install. It will not work on this new Macbook Pro. I had to download a version specific to this computer (using the "recover" disk). I takes 1.5 hours to download and then it still didn't work. When the computer reboots after the download and restarts I get the same **** circle with a line through it. The new "manual" is a joke. There is no reference to upgrading drives or memory. Did Apple decide to make their new laptops inaccessible to the owner? I can't find any info online and at the Apple store today they told me they knew of no reason that the drive wouldn't work.
Anyone else have any thoughts?

NOTE:If you’re transferring information over a wired or wireless network, make sure your computers are connected to the same network.
To transfer information from a Mac:
Open Migration Assistant (located in the Utilities folder in the Applications folder), and then follow the onscreen instructions.
When you’re asked how you want to transfer your information, select the “From another Mac” button, and then select the method by which you want to transfer.
To transfer files using a FireWire cable connected to your computers, click Use FireWire. Then, follow the onscreen instructions to restart your other Mac while holding down the T key.

No icon for the Hard Drive on my desktop, new MacBook, i7

Brand new MacBook, Core i7...
Right out of the box, there's no HD icon on my desktop(!) I did a clean reinstall & permission repair, but it's still not there. Is there something in System Preferences that I'm not finding?

Install the SSD in an enclosure and connect it to the MBP via USB.
Open Disk Utility>Erase and format the drive to Mac OS Extended (Journaled).
Then select Disk Utility>Restore.
Drag the internal HDD to the Source field. Drag the SSD to the Destination field. Click on the Restore button.
This may take a few hours depending upon how much data has to be transferred.
When complete, Boot the MBP with the OPTION key.
Select the SSD and if it boots the MBP, swap the two drives.

Using my iTunes library from an external hard drive to a brand new Macbook.

This seems to be such a simple thing to be able to do but I'm fearing it's not. Basically I've had an iMac for 3 years and during that time have built up around 165gb in my iTunes folder. So I learnt off the net how to move my library onto an external hard drive so that I can free up the space on my iMac and play my iTunes library from the external drive. So far so good. My iPhone 4 is obviously connected to my iMac and thats how I get my media on and off the phone. Here's where my problems begin.
I've just bought a Macbook Pro. Its obviously empty and has no media on it. I have paired my iPhone 4 with the new Macbook but obviously the iTunes library on my new Macbook is empty. I downloaded a couple of podcasts onto my new machine and tried to put them onto my phone but got a message saying that the podcasts I currently have on my phone (that are on there from my iMac iTunes library) were going to be deleted and the new ones would be put on. Still with me? So, if I could get my original 165gb library thats now on my external hard drive to be seen on my new Macbook that would possibly solve my problems. But I cant see a simple way of doing this. I've pointed the iTunes Media Location folder in the preferences on my new Macbook to the same folder on my external hard drive as is on my iMac but iTunes on my Macbook is not showing up my library. Do I really have to open every album into iTunes on my Macbook seperately? It seems such a stupid, laborious way of doing it. As if you cant have two Apple computers and run one iTunes library off an external hard drive so that its the same on both machines.

in that case it might be best to copy the entire iTunes folder to the external. then, on each machine, launch iTunes while pressing option on your keyboard. when prompted, click on +choose library+ and navigate to the iTunes folder on the external.
note only one iTunes can access the iTunes library @ a time !
also, make sure the external is mounted on either machine before launching iTunes.

Missing hard drive memory on brand new Macbook Pro

Hi all,
Forgive my lack of technical knowledge here, but I've just bought a new Macbook Pro Retina, and despite migrating literally about 1GB worth of files, the system is showing approx. 22GB of storage space being taken up by 'other.'
I know these questions are asked a lot, but could anybody help me out with what might be eating up this space and how I can reclaim the it? I appreciate that devices rarely come with the storage space cited on the box, but that seems excessive.

For information about the Other category in the Storage display, see this support article. If the display seems to be inaccurate, try rebuilding the Spotlight index.
Empty the Trash if you haven't already done so. If you use iPhoto, empty its internal Trash first:
iPhoto ▹ Empty Trash
Do the same in other applications, such as Aperture, that have an internal Trash feature. Then restart the computer. That will temporarily free up some space.
According to Apple documentation, you need at least 9 GB of available space on the startup volume (as shown in the Finder Info window) for normal operation—not the mythical 10%, 15%, or any other percentage. You also need enough space left over to allow for growth of the data. There is little or no performance advantage to having more available space than the minimum Apple recommends. Available storage space that you'll never use is wasted space.
When Time Machine backs up a portable Mac, some of the free space will be used to make local snapshots, which are backup copies of recently deleted files. The space occupied by local snapshots is reported as available by the Finder, and should be considered as such. In the Storage display of System Information, local snapshots are shown as Backups. The snapshots are automatically deleted when they expire or when free space falls below a certain level. You ordinarily don't need to, and should not, delete local snapshots yourself. If you followed bad advice to disable local snapshots by running a shell command, you may have ended up with a lot of data in the Other category. Ask for instructions in that case.

You can more effectively use a tool such as OmniDiskSweeper (ODS) or GrandPerspective (GP) to explore the volume and find out what's taking up the space. You can also delete files with it, but don't do that unless you're sure that you know what you're deleting and that all data is safely backed up. That means you have multiple backups, not just one. Note that ODS only works with OS X 10.8 or later. If you're running an older OS version, use GP.
Deleting files inside a photo or iTunes library will corrupt the library. Changes to such a library must be made from within the application that created it. The same goes for Mail files.
Proceed further only if the problem isn't solved by the above steps.
ODS or GP can't see the whole filesystem when you run it just by double-clicking; it only sees files that you have permission to read. To see everything, you have to run it as root.
Back up all data now.
Install the app in the Applications folder as usual. Quit it if it's running.
Triple-click anywhere in the corresponding line of text below on this page to select it, then copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.

Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
Paste into the Terminal window by pressing command-V. You'll be prompted for your login password.
The application window will open behind other open windows. When you scan a volume, the window will eventually show all files in all folders, sorted by size. It may take a few minutes for the app to finish scanning.
I don't recommend that you make a habit of doing this. Don't delete anything as root. If something needs to be deleted, make sure you know what it is and how it got there, and then delete it by other, safer, means. When in doubt, leave it alone or ask for guidance.
When you're done with the app, quit it and also quit Terminal.

If you still have a use for it it's definately worth it. You can upgrade the ram to a maximum of 6GB and run the current Yosemite OS. How do I authorise my Imac for Itunes after replacing the hard drive?

Apologies, but I am new to forums and understand that the issue of "Authorisation" of Itunes purchases and rentals has been done to death! However, I have tried everything and have exhausted normal research on the Net, there doesnt seem to be standard sollution to my problem. I have replaced the Hard Drive in my Imac 2008 with an SSD which makes the Imac very fast and effcient and completely clean of the usual trash in an old computer. So before renting my first movie, I did the following:..................................
Formatted the hard drive and downloaded and upgraded to OSX to 10.5.8 (the latest I can go on this Imac (I think) Intel 3.06Ghz 2 core and 4GB SSDRAM)
Upgraded Itunes to the latest available
Upgraded Quicktime to the latest available.
I rented a film which will not play and initially I got the "not authorised on this computer" message which kept repeating despite saying it was "waiting"
So I did the usual apple support search and tried the following:..................................
I checked that my apple User ID and password where up to date and that I was purchasing on the right ID
Tried the standard.....Itunes/Store/Authorise this computer - tried unauthorising and then re-authorising No luck
I tried deleting the (/Users/Shared/SC info) file No luck
I tried the Terminal based solution "sumo chmod -R 777 /Shared/Users" fix It didnt work either
I don't get the authorisation warning any more but just get a black screen with a grey horizontal stripe across the middle
I would be very grateful if somene could give me another sollution to try............................

Have you recharge the battery for at least 2 hours, or just leave it connected for 4 hours?
(When you replaced the Hardisk, you should also replace the battery.)
Some other iPod SSD sites, says that you may have to format the CF in FAT32, as Mac dont read NTFS drive so if Windows is the 1st PC that your CF is connected, it may be formatted to NTFS.
You can try erasing the CF using Disk Utilty, so that Mac can recognise it. (but not Windows)

The last security update released for Tiger users was the 2009-005 update. The latest version of QuickTime is 7.6.4. The last version of iTunes that can run on Tiger is 9.2.1, because 10.0 only supports Mac OS X Leopard and later.
So, are you on version 9.2.1?
Was it Tiger or Leopard you had on the drive before?
