Is my Safari Hacked???

So im using safari on Mac OS X 10.6.8
this morning when trying to search images, nothing i clicked would do anything; wouldn't expand the image and wouldn't send me to the linked page...absolutely nothing. But only in Safari!  Firefox and chrome are ok
then i flushed my DNS through terminal...
Now every time i go to google i get the OLD layout, with the black bar on top and the options on the left side and no summaries with stock quotes etc. on the right side for big company sites like Sony or Facebook.
Im not sure how to fix it...  I tried resetting and reinstalling safari, changing my IP address restarting the computer, dumping cookies, and no luck
Does this mean my browser is havked or has malware?  Is there any way to fix this???

Helpful Links Regarding Malware Protection
An excellent link to read is Tom Reed's Mac Malware Guide.
Also, visit The XLab FAQs and read Detecting and avoiding malware and spyware.

If you require anti-virus protection Thomas Reed recommends using ClamXAV. (Thank you to Thomas Reed for this recommendation.)
From user Joe Bailey comes this equally useful advice:
The facts are:
1. There is no anti-malware software that can detect 100% of the malware out there.
2. There is no anti-malware that can detect anything targeting the Mac because there
is no Mac malware in the wild, and therefore, no "signatures" to detect.
3. The very best way to prevent the most attacks is for you as the user to be aware that
the most successful malware attacks rely on very sophisticated social engineering
techniques preying on human avarice, ****, and fear.
4. Internet popups saying the FBI, NSA, Microsoft, your ISP has detected malware on
your computer is intended to entice you to install their malware thinking it is a
    protection against malware.
5. Some of the anti-malware products on the market are worse than the malware
from which they purport to protect you.
6. Be cautious where you go on the internet.
7. Only download anything from sites you know are safe.
8. Avoid links you receive in email, always be suspicious even if you get something
you think is from a friend, but you were not expecting.
9. If there is any question in your mind, then assume it is malware.

  • Was safari hacked 8/20/13?

Was Safari hacked today 8/20/13? Every time I try to open it (4times now) I get a pop-up saying Congratulations! You are  the winner for August 20, Select a prize, enter email yadda yadda. I have force quit and cleared history and temp internet files 3 times and acreen captured the link. What can I do to get rid of this? I had to send this from my iPad because I cannot open Apple support on my mac.

Have you tried a complete reset of Safari (File menu -> Reset)? You may have a cookie or other stored file directing your browser to that site. Or your router may have been compromised - what's called "DNS poisoning" - and needs to be reset.
    Hope this helps.

  • My safari hacked...I fixed it..

Last night, 3/26/15, my safari screen was taken over by someone posing from Mac... it said to call a number and keep repeating a message that my computer has been compromised.. I force quit and restarted but message kept coming up but with different # to call... I search for answers on my iPhone then opened chrome which worked for answers ..   Someone said to open safari again... then turn off wifi... then reopen safari...I couldn't remember what the person said to do after that.. but I was able to get into my history in safari and clear my history for the past 2 days... walla!  I cleared the message and ran a utility dr and restart computer.. so far so good... no messages from those hackers.. ..hope this was a permanent fix...
Is there a real adware from Mac for our macbrook pro?   I don't believe anyone any more... I do look for "hpps"  I look for the "s" for security at the end... the pop up screen did not have the "s"..
    Good luck everyone...

You weren't hacked. It's a JavaScript trick to keep your browser locked to that page. What you did was all that needs to be done. There are hundreds of similar posts on these forums.
Yes, there is real adware. To date, it has been harmless, just extremely annoying. AV software (if you have it, and you really don't need it) will not recognize adware as something to detect or remove since it isn't an actual threat. If you do get any adware installed, you can either follow Apple's manual instructions for removing it, or use the free automated tool, AdwareMedic. Though AdwareMedic requires Lion or later. Manual removal is your only real option in Snow Leopard or older.

  • Need a chrome and safari hack to eliminate white space, or?

    Hi,
This page renders fine in IE8 and Firefox, but in Chrome and Safari there is white space before the Welcome bar.

  • Safari hacked/virus on it!

My safari browsor was taken over by a fake virus scanner. How do I get it off my computer and how do I stop all the pop ups on my browser?

    Helpful Links Regarding Malware Problems
If you are having an immediate problem with ads popping up see The Safe Mac » Adware Removal Guide, remove adware that displays pop-up ads and graphics on your Mac, and AdwareMedic. If you require anti-virus protection Thomas Reed recommends using ClamXAV. (Thank you to Thomas Reed for this recommendation.) You might consider adding this Safari extensions: Adblock Plus 1.8.9.
Open Safari, select Preferences from the Safari menu. Click on Extensions icon in the toolbar. Disable all Extensions. If this stops your problem, then re-enable them one by one until the problem returns. Now remove that extension as it is causing the problem.
The following comes from user stevejobsfan0123. I have made minor changes to adapt to this presentation.
Fix Some Browser Pop-ups That Take Over Safari.
Common pop-ups include a message saying the government has seized your computer and you must pay to have it released (often called "Moneypak"), or a phony message saying that your computer has been infected, and you need to call a tech support number (sometimes claiming to be Apple) to get it resolved. First, understand that these pop-ups are not caused by a virus and your computer has not been affected. This "hijack" is limited to your web browser. Also understand that these messages are scams, so do not pay any money, call the listed number, or provide any personal information. This article will outline the solution to dismiss the pop-up.
    Quit Safari
Usually, these pop-ups will not go away by either clicking "OK" or "Cancel." Furthermore, several menus in the menu bar may become disabled and show in gray, including the option to quit Safari. You will likely have to force quit Safari. To do this, press Command + option + esc, select Safari, and press Force Quit.
    Relaunch Safari
If you relaunch Safari, the page will reopen. To prevent this from happening, hold down the 'Shift' key while opening Safari. This will prevent windows from the last time Safari was running from reopening.
This will not work in all cases. The shift key must be held at the right time, and in some cases, even if done correctly, the window reappears. In these circumstances, after force quitting Safari, turn off Wi-Fi or disconnect Ethernet, depending on how you connect to the Internet. Then relaunch Safari normally. It will try to reload the malicious webpage, but without a connection, it won't be able to. Navigate away from that page by entering a different URL, i.e. www.apple.com, and trying to load it. Now you can reconnect to the Internet, and the page you entered will appear rather than the malicious one.

  • Safari hacked

Yesterday when browsing on Facebook I clicked on a video and the next thing I saw was a box that crashed the browser.
I was totally unable to get it off the screen stating to call Apple support stating that I had a virus. I knew it was a spam.
Now I am unable to use Safari because of it.
I downloaded Yosemite again but the window does not let me into Safari.
    Wishing to use Safari again.

Hold down the SHIFT key while starting Safari. That may help.

  • Safari 3: Leopard / Tiger rendering differences

I am noticing subtle rendering differences in Safari 3 between Tiger and Leopard, is anyone else experiencing this? It appears to be related to box size calculation, as it seems to cause selected elements in one browser to not recognize certain margin values via css.

    OS Lucinity wrote:
Another thing about Safari 3 on Leopard, is that I cannot grab downloaded files from the Downloads list, to drag them to the desktop (or wherever) like I was able to in Safari 2, and Safari 3 Tiger.
I'm not able to do that in the Safari 3 beta in Tiger. (I just double-checked that.) As far as I know, I've never been able to drag files from the Downloads window in Safari. Perhaps you had a Safari hack installed that enabled that ability?
What I can do is click the magnifying glass next to a file in the Downloads window, which reveals that file in the Finder.

  • Safari 3 Leopard Downloads Wierdness

Anytime a download nears completions, the spinning ball of colors rears it's ugly (but pretty) head, and Safari use is unavailable for about 30 seconds. I never saw this with Safari 2, or even the Safari 3 beta on Tiger.

  • Is it possible to get hacked from safari on your Iphone

When I was browsing a site a white badge icon popped up and asked if I wanted to go to a site. Assuming that this was malicious I went to take safari off multitask. When I did that my screen went black w/the white apple logo and a few seconds later my normal locked screen appeared. When I went back into my phone I assumed it was a virus and cleared all the cookies/history from safari. After that I spent the next couple of hours downloading avast and resorting my phone. My only concerns are if they hacked me and stole any information from my phone (that being the reason I restored my phone). My question to you guys is has this ever happened to you guys and should I still be concerned? Its been a day and I'm still shaken up.

Unless your iPhone has been jailbroken there is nothing known that can attack the iOS...and be sure to download the latest iOS, 7.0.6 as that has security patches and SSL patches.
There can be browser pop-ups, but those are from the website and not things that can self-install on an iOS device.  They can be a scary thing to deal with, however.  Basically what you did is great...I would not bother with anything like Avast.  With an experience like that, double click the home button, dismiss all recent apps by swiping the material above the icon up and away, then reboot by holding both the power and home buttons until the apple logo appears.  Ignore the red slider if that appears.
Doing that stops all apps that could be running even in the background, clears all memory, and resets the iOS device.  No data or settings will be affected by doing that.

  • Would we get a legit audible warning message on Safari about being hacked?

My wife tried to open Safari on her Macbook Air and got audio message on a Safari mini-window saying her network has been hacked and that she needs help from http://www.fixpc99.com and wants her to call a helpline at (647) 360-4442.
Never saw and audible message like this is it valid?

    Do not call the number.
Force quit Safari, then restart Safari while holding the Shift key.

  • Tab in Safari said I'd been hacked and info started streaming across tab

I left several tabs running under Safari but always return to the home screen before turning my iPad off.  When I opened Safari this morning one of my tabs said something like "You've been hacked.". There was a green skull of sorts on a black screen and I remember seeing the word newbie on the page.  I tried to shut the page down but couldn't and I saw letters and numbers streaming across the tab itself at the top by the x where I tried to close it.  I switched to another tab and the streaming stopped.  I went back and it started again.  It finished in a few seconds and finally allowed me to close the tab.  It happened so fast I wasn't sure what to do.  So far I haven't noticed any problems but I'm afraid to use any of my apps with passwords, particularly banking apps.  I cleared my browser history and cookies and restarted using the power button and home button.  I did notice a spam email in my inbox, maybe just a coincidence.  Has anyone else seen anything like this or have further advice?  I hate to totally reset if I don't have too.

i have never heard of a ios device actually being hacked. it is super hard to do . i would suggest a factory reset

  • Hacked product photos when online shopping in safari

This morning, when shopping online via Safari on my iPhone 4S, a very weird thing happened. On several sites (bestbuy.com, jcpenney.com and oldnavy.com) some of the product photos were replaced by random candid shots unrelated to the product. They aren't my photos, just random ones. For instance, on the jcpenney.com site, I was looking at women's tops and on one of the products it shows a pic of a man and a woman instead of the product and the photo is MIT the same size as the other thumbnails, etc. On Bestbuy.com specifically  http://m.bestbuy.com/m/e/catalog/list.jsp?id=abcat0401000 the Nikon Coolpix orange is showing a picture of a man. When you click on the listing, it goes to the correct product page and has the correct photos. So.....what the heck is going on? Is this a virus? It would just be too much of a coincidence for all of their sites to be hacked so it must be my phone.

I am not seing what you describe on that site (though I'm also not seeing an orange Nikon Coolpix), so this looks like it's specific to you.
Have you jailbroken your phone? If so, anything is possible, but we're not allowed to help you with that here. If not, this issue cannot be malware.
Most likely, I would guess that there's an issue with your network. Was this happening while you were connected to a wireless network, or while on the cellular network? If the former, does it happen on other wireless networks? If the latter, do you see the same issue if you connect to a wireless network and use that instead?

  • Wierd safari bug - is this a hack of some kind?

this happens quite a bit - here's an example. I try to visit a link provided by google and end up with some weird page with other links. But when I do the same link through Firefox everything is ok - see an example below (first the Safari mess, then Firefox as it should be):
    Has Safari been hacked?

    Hello Hans,
    Has Safari been hacked?
NO ...... why do you think that Safari is be hacked ?? I think that you are a switcher that recently used Micro Soft.
Did you empty caches in the Safari application ?? Sometimes it's just a matter that the caches shown a older make up of a web site.

  • Safari problem,,,,may be hacked,,,,would not open and 1-800-680-4131 showed up.....???

safari may be hacked,,,,would not open and the number 1-800-680-4131,,would fix my problem for $250.00.......does apple know about this and are they doing anything about it?

Yes, those are symptoms that Safari was hacked. It probably happened because you accidentally clicked on an ad or something that triggered it. You should definitely not pay the money to fix it.
The good news is that it probably only affects your web browser and not the entire computer.
Apple does already have several settings in the Safari Preferences that try to prevent hacks. But they can't prevent everything. It is especially difficult for a company to prevent "social engineering" hacks like "phishing" where users are tricked into clicking on things, because the hack is introduced by something outside the computer (the user that's been tricked).
Here are a couple of links I found about this type of problem. Note: I do not know how good these sources are, but because they do offer similar solutions they sound legitimate. In short, you can just reset Safari, and if it doesn't let you do that you can force Safari to quit and the reset it.
