Is possible to recover hot.backup of a nonarchive database?

I have read on several books that hot backups must be done on a database set with ARCHIVELOG mode, but it is physically possible to recover a hot-backup of a database that was in NOARCHIVELOG mode. Obviously some transactions would be lost, but it is possible to do it?
I'm trying to do it unsuccesfully (when I try to startup the data base he asme for recovering the database and then always ask me for a archive log file.......)
Thanks

What you have red is correct.
You can't do hot backup on non-archivelog database.

You cannot recover a password, otherwise it would not be secure.  Could you explain the situation a little more, especially since your subject line refers to an article on update and restore alert messages.  It sounds like you are saying there is an encrypted password on your backup file that you did not set...is that correct?

  • Hot backups for essbase planning databases

    Hi gurus
Can please tell me best advice for making hot backups of our essbase planning databases for disaster recoveries?
We try doubletake but files are locked unless essbase is put in read-only mode.
Any good tools for this? Certified stuff? Heard maybe VBE?
    TIA
    M.

    Hi,
First of all have you read the document of backing up essbase :- http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E10530_01/doc/epm.931/hfm_backup.pdf
If you are taking a backup while essbase is running then you will need to put the databases into read only mode, this can be done by using a maxl script and once again to take it out of read only mode.
There are lots of 3rd party applications out there for backing up file structures, it all depends on what you want it to do and how much you want to pay.
If it is a small installation you could even script it yourself depensing on your knowledge to back up files and copy them to a san or backup drive.
    Cheers

  • Time machine - possible to recover deleted backup files that have yet to be overwritten?

I recently had to wipe my hard drive and reinstall my OS after my MacBook Pro failed to start.  I managed to restore all my files from a Time Machine backup on an external HD after installing OS Yosemite.
After my computer is up and running again, I switched on Time Machine again, which started deleting my older backup files to make room for a new backup.  Before I know it, it has deleted all my backup files except for the latest one, the one which I used to restore my computer.
Then Time Machine discovered that it still would not have enough room for the new backup and stopped.  So I don't think anything new has been written to my external HD yet.  Given that Time Machine may not have overwritten the old backup images (fingers-crossed), is there any possibility that I could recover those?  If so, how do I do it?
The old data backup is extremely important for me.  Any help or advice will be greatly appreciated.  Thank you very much.

  • Incomplete Recovery Fails using Full hot backup & Archive logs !!

    Hello DBA's !!
I am doing on Recovery scenario where I have taken One full hot backup of my Portal Database (EPR) and Restored it on New Test Server. Also I restored Archive logs from last full hot backup for next 6 days. Also I restored the latest Control file (binary) to their original locations. Now, I started the recovery scenario as follows....
    1) Installed Oracle 10.2.0.2 compatible with restored version of oracle.
    2) Configured tnsnames.ora, listener.ora, sqlnet.ora with hostname of Test server.
    3) Restored all Hot backup files from Tape to Test Server.
    4) Restored all archive logs from tape to Test server.
    5) Restored Latest Binary Control file from Tape to Test Server.
    6) Now, Started recovery using following command from SQL prompt.
    SQL> recover database until cancel using backup controlfile;
    7) Open database after Recovery Completion using RESETLOGS option.
Now in Above scenario I completed steps upto 5) successfully. But when I execute the step 6) the recovery completes with Warning : Recovery completed but OPEN RESETLOGS may throw error " system file needs more recovery to be consistent " . Please find the following snapshot ....

Please Let me know why my Incomplete Recovery using Archive logs Goes Fail ?
    Atul Patil.

oh you made up a new thread so here again:
    there is nothing wrong.
You restored your backup, archives etc.
you started your recovery and oracle applyed all archives but the archive
    '/oracle/EPR/oraarch/1_9624_601570270.dbf'
does not exist because it represents your current online redo log file and that is not present.
the recovery process cancels by itself.
    the solution is:
    restart your recovery process with:
recover database until cancel using backup controlfile
and when oracle suggests you '/oracle/EPR/oraarch/1_9624_601570270.dbf'
    type cancel!
now you should be able to open your database with open resetlogs.

    Hi All,
I am a forms developer for 9 years and new to dba/backup. I have to review a mannual hot backup for a 9i database in Solaris.
    There 2 scripts
    1) Script to backup all data files (system, users...) runs once in a day and Ftp to a ftp server
    2) Script which runs every one hour which takes a backup of redo log files, archive files and control file. And this is ftp to a ftp server.
Q1 Does this good enough to recover the data up to last one hour ?
Q2 Here is my Script 2. Is this correct?
sqlplus "/ as sysdba" << EOF
    alter system switch logfile;

    # Sleep for sometime, till the log file is complete
    sleep 60

  • Missing logfiles when hot backup is taken using RMAN

    Hello All,
I am having the below situation .Please help to clarify.
I have taken hot backup using RMAN. Database is in Archivelog mode. It doesn't take backup of online redo logs. The status of my redo logs are as below. All are not archived.
    /u01/app/oracle/oradata/redo01.log ----Active---Not Archived
    /u01/app/oracle/oradata/redo03.log ----Active---Not Archived
    /u01/app/oracle/oradata/redo03.log----Current---Not Archived

How can I get the data also?

    You can give even
SQL> alter system checkpoint;and do you have any idea at what point you want to recover your database? Even though they are in ACTIVE stauts, when you are taking backup. Still you can apply them how much you want. There will be no lost data. But ensure you haven't opened[resetologs] database.

  • Does SAP provide a standard tool that can make the SAP Hot Backup ?

    Dear Guru ,
We are planning a Disaster Recover Plan . And we eager that we have one Hot Backup SAP Production system ...
The idea is like that :
1 . Real Production System transfer redo log or archive log to Hot Backup Server in every 15 minutes .
2 . Hot Backup Server refresh the database base on the redo log or archive log .
3 . Once Real Production System shutdown , the Hot Backup server can be as the Real Production system for daily usage .
Is SAP providing this kind of tool as well ?
    Thanks a lot .
    Best Regards,
    Carlos Zhang

SAP runs on many combinations of databases and operating systems. The database vendors usually have methods and tools to do what you want so no, SAP doesn't provide any tools because SAP is only the application using the database.
You'll have to ask your database vendor.

select file#,status from v$backup;Even until unless you restore, recover open you cannot validate them.
In case of RMAN you can validate. You are talking about 11gR2 what is the reason to choose user managed backup still?

  • Using Data Guard and hot backups - 9.2.0.6.0

    Hi all,
I have an existing 9.2.0.6.0 database that is setup in a DataGuard environment - one primary database with a physical standby in a separate datacenter. It is all setup and it works beautifully. On our primary database, we currently have 2 different types of backups we are doing - we do an export of the main schema (all of the application data is all in this one schema) 4 times a day, and we do a full database hot backup once a night.
My question is in regards to the hot backup - I don't know that it is even worth doing a hot backup of this database? I am trying to think of a situation where we would actually want to restore a hot backup of the primary database... If we ran into some kind of a data issue, it would probably be quickest and easiest to restore data from one of the exports, and when we did that restore (import), I assume that data change would be replicated through DataGuard to the standby site. But if there was some kind of situation where we wanted to restore a recent hot backup of the primary database, that would essentially break the Data Guard configuration, and I assume that after the hot backup was restored, we would have to somehow re-instantiate Data Guard on the standby site.
Does anyone have any input on this? If you are running with DataGuard, is it even worth it to be doing hot backups? What kind of situation would call for restoring a hot backup, instead of just failing over to the standby?
    Thanks!

If we ran into some kind of a data issue, it would probably be quickest and easiest to restore data from one of the exportsIt would be quickest to failover to stand by database than restroing from dump file. After all you maintaing stand by db for that reason.
How can you restore database up to the latest changes using export/import ? You may have to restore using rman and apply the logs.
You can backup from stand by database. You do not need to back up primary.

  • Hot Backups - Oracle 9i, 10g and 11g

Are all hot backups run outside of RMAN as an OS file copy? If so, isn't this a very risky exercise.
I understand that RMAN will check for corruption where as hot backups won't. RMAN can also track backups in a recovery catalog.
If using a hot backup, it seems like corrupt data could be backed up with the good data.
What exactly are the advantages of using a hot backup. It is understood that the databases can be up during a hot backup, but can't they also be up with an incremental RMAN backup?

I think you need to read the documentation again. Check on tahiti.oracle.com
A cold backup is when the database is shutdown (can be done by file copy or rman)
A hot backup is when the database is running (can be done by file copy or rman)
RMAN has the advantages of backing up at block level, and going directly to tape, and compression, and incremental backup, and block checking, and backup from ASM, and catalog ......
File copy has the advantage of being logically simple (e.g you can see exactly what is happening when you copy a file).

i have done the steps till copying the db and apps tier.Looks like you are doing cold backup and not hot backup! Was the database cleanly shutdown before copying the database files?
    a. remove all lines before the startup nomount statementCorrect -- Or you could leave those lines if they are commented.
    b. Modify the REUSE to SETCorrect.
    c. Modify Source DB SID to Target SID (Here PROD to TEST)Correct.
    d. Modify NORESETLOGS TO RESETLOGSCorrect.
You will also have to change ARCHIVELOG to NOARCHIVELOG -- If your source instance is in ARCHIVELOG mode.
    e. delete all lines after the CHARACTER SET statementKeep the lines/command that open the database and create the temporary tablespace.

  • How to restore RMAN hot backup to another database on another server?

I want to know how to restore RMAN hot backup from production server to another database on a testing server.
The hot backup is from a database named PROD on the production server
The database to be restored with the hot backup is TEST on the testing server. There is already a PROD database on the testing server and this PROD database must be kept.
I have read some threads about changing initTEST.ora to PROD to restore such backup but (I think) will not work in my case since I already have a PROD database on the testing server.
The version is 11gR2 on Linux but the compatible parameter is set to 10.2.0.1.0.
    Thanks for any help.
