Is Rosetta triggering Fan Speed??

When I run certain non-universal programs or widgets (Cubase SX for example) the fan speed picks up, AND THEN STAYS HIGH EVEN WHEN THE PROGRAM HAS BEEN QUIT! To remedy the situation, you have to re-start. I can only think that Rosetta is left running in the background, using up CPU and causing fan speed, even though there isn't the heat to justify the fan speed.
Anyone else aware of this? Is there an answer(I have everything as up-to-date as possible)?

Rosetta will certainly require additional resources when it is running, but when any process is idle (not being used) it does not use any CPU time. If the applications that are in use require a lot of CPU time then the processor will heat up. The fan speed will ramp up to increase air flow to cool the computer. Until the temperature drops below a certain point the fan will continue at slowly decreasing speed until the computer has cooled off and the fan reaches idle speed. There are thermal sensors in the computer that are better able to determine how hot it is than you can.

  • Yoga 2 13 - Fan speed goes almost silent in tablet mode

I find that the fan generates too much noise on my Yoga 2 13 (not pro), even when the laptop is completely idle.
It seems that somehow the temperature threshold for triggering the fan is set a bit too low (same problem seen on the lenovo yoga first version)
However, I noticed that when I fold my Yoga into tablet mode the fan goes almost silent (which is awesome).
Am I the only one experiencing this issue ?
Is there maybe a way to set the fan speed in laptop, tent and stand mode at the same speed as in tablet mode ?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Regards,
    Mat.

I was going to reccomend you use the Notebook fan control program, and I went to go find you a link for it.  However, when searching for it, I discovered that the Notebook fan control program doesn't work for the yoga 2 13 although it does work for my yoga 13.  It seems to be because the yoga 2 13 only has one fan while the yoga 13 has two fans.  I'm not sure.
The best bet for you is to search around on forums to see if anyone has discovered a different program that works.  I tried searching around but I couldn't find anything.

  • Z640 workstation rear fan speed noise

How can I change rear chasis fan speed in z640 workstation?

FYI to all the helpful folks here (and any looking to shut their jet engine off as well): Flashing the BIOS did the trick.
First I had to find a website with DOS OS files and put those on the USB instead of Vista.  Oldie but a goodie, but at least it booted! No other versions would.
I had been intending to use the WinPhlash utility that Lenovo supplied with the BIOS update but since I was booting from DOS that was useless. However, I found a DOS version of it and used that instead. Boom baby!  Flashed and rebooted.
It did take two boots to get it back to normal (first one gave very alarming messages about no operating system being found but I think it was just a remnant of the reboot that was triggered from the DOS session).  A second boot returned life to normal and blissful silence from the server.  And I was finally able to get the model and serial number back in there to get rid of the bootup message it throws for that too.
    Ahhhhhhh.
Thanks to all for the hints - I believe I had gotten the idea of flashing the BIOS to solve this from some other thread I found here.  This is a very nice forum to have bookmarked.

  • P67A-G45 (B3) fan speed keep dropping to 0 rpm

I just got this motherboard (P67A-G45 (B3)) for a month. Just only today, I notice the CPU fan speed being detect keep on going to 0 rpm every 10-15 secs. It goes to 1800 rpm then after like 10 secs, you can it become 0 just for a second. Then it goes back to 1800 rpm.
When I turn view this under control center II in windows 7, it also shows this symptom and alarm get triggered.
I did not do any over clocking. I am using Cooler Master Hyper N520 heatsink. The fan for this heatsink only have 3 pin which I doubt is the reason for the board to detect 0 rpm. Anyone having similar problem with this motherboard or HSF?

My parts for 2 units of 3-pin fan cable arrived. After some modding, I connected it to replace the existing 3-pin Y-cable. Partially works. When I check in the BIOS level, I can see the speed drop occasionally to around 500rpm. However, when I boot up to windows and using speedfan, below is what I get.
Still getting speed drop to around 500rpm but it happen less frequent and at least not 0 rpm. I am okay with this. As I don't have another motherboard to test. Plus I really do not want to take out the HSF again as it is a lot of work. Need to take out the whole motherboard for that.
    edit:
I switch between fan1 and fan2. Take note fan2 is sysfan1 on the motherboard. I plug the HSF cable into fan2 and for fan1 I plug the PSU fan. So this time I see fan2 speed drop to 500rpm every 8 minutes.
So conclusion, problem is with the HSF. Cable? Or the Fans? And why does changing the cable fixes the problem "partially"?

  • About the rules (logic) between the fan speed and the temperatures?

    Hello All,
Well, I've had a bad experience with my MBP last week: my motherboard busted and had to replace it... Expensive part to replace!
After thinking about the reasons why it failed, my attention has been directed toward a possible motherboard overheating, which might have damaged the motherboard.
I've installed the iStat Pro widget and regularly monitor temperatures displayed vs. fan speed. I do get a bit nervous when I see a 84 oC CPU temperature and idle (2000 rpm) fan speeds. My GPU temperature is also sometimes in that range.
    My questions are:
    1) does anybody know the rules (logic) between the various temperatures (CPU, CPU heatsink, GPU, GPU heatsink, enclosure, HD, etc.) and the fan speeds?
    2) other than with the fews apps out there, is there a way to customize the rules? Is there a text file or a plist file somewhere where I can change the rules?
    Thanks!

If your idle speeds are 2000 rpm, you have one of the original Core Duo MBPs. For me, I see fans on my 17" CD MBP speeding up once temps get into the upper 70s °C.
Apps like smcFanControl allow you to alter the setpoints. Note that some users who installed smcFanControl, then uninstalled it, report symptoms like yours - namely, the fans remain at idle no matter how hight the temps get, until a thermal shutdown is triggered (somewhere close to 100 °C).

  • MSI KT3 Ultra ARU 2 fan speed controlling

Hi, i'd like to know if is it possible to control the fan speed via software with this motherboard. I've try with Speedfan, but it seems to have no effect :( .
    Suggestions?

    Hi,
    Sorry, it's not possible.

  • K9n Platinum fan speed control

    Hi!
    I have the following configuration:
    -Motherboard: MSI K9N Platinum v1.1
    -Bios: AMI v1.3
-CPU: AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core)
-CPU cooler: Artic Cooling Freezer 64 Pro
    -Memory: Kingmax 2*1 GB
    -Video card: MSI NX7600 GT
    -Power Supply: Antec NeoHE430 430W
-Hard Drive: Samsung 250 GB SP2504C
-Operating system: Win XP Pro SP2
I would like to control the speed of the CPU fan automatically, according to the temperature.
    I tried
-the Dual CoreCenter utility from MSI, but it allows me only check the speed manually (If I did not miss anything)
-control from BIOS HW Monitor setting SmartFan but it does not work at all. ( Iam not sure but this can be because my cooler, it has 3 pin connector, and th MB user guide tells it works only if I use 4 pin connector. Can you confirm this?)
-Speedfan 4.31, it seemed working, but the system become instabile. I check the programmers site, and this MB did not supported.
Do you have any suggesions, experience about controlling the CPUfan?
    Thank you in advance!
    T.

    Thank you for the answers.
Unfortunately the smartfan feature is not working in my case.( set to 3-pin in BIOS) I asked the MSI Technical Support and they said:
As this motherboard includes 4 pins connector for cpu fan, the 4th pin is used to controlled cpu fan speed, if you use 3 pins fan, fan speed will not be changed automatically and smart fan will not function.
I feel a small contradiction here
Do you have other ideas other than smartfan and speedfan?
    T.

  • Dc5850 cpu fan speeds to top speed sys then shutdown

I have a Hewlett-Packard HP Compaq dc5850 Micro tower PC, now running windows 7 pro 64-bit. That was new in late 2008. Originally it came with vista 32-bit downgrade able to XP pro 32 bit, running on 2G RAM, and 160G C drive with a 2.30 gigahertz AMD Phenom 8600B Triple-Core processor. It also has ATI 3100 integrated graphics as well as integrated NIC at 1G and integrated High def audio. In the first few months I had the system, I upgraded memory by 4G and total Disc space by 500G by adding a D drive; then upgraded to windows 7 pro 64-bit.
Overall, I have had a good experience with the PC but it has had problems while in its 3-year warranty. I did need to replace the C drive and later it original RAM devices. Yes HP did these replacements and swaps, under warranty; that meant I had 6G memory for a long time before the HP 2Gig failed out of warranty, leaving me with 4Gig now. Yes I have always had the Unit on an UPS; I even replaced the old UPS with a more powerful unit in late 2009 or early 2010 when the old UPS showed signs of failure. Now instead of serial based UPS connection it is USB.
Over the last few months I have been getting blue-screen errors of all sorts. Ranging from video related errors, Memory faults, Disc read/write failures and processor flag errors too. After numerous repair disc runs or re-install of windows, the disc read write errors wore corrected by the HP drive sanitation utility disc repair/wipe after failing the extended test. The non video ram was tested by a bootable CD of memtest86 v4 running extended test as well as MS memory Diagnostic. Both run multiple times, both passed multiple times. I was able to find a CD based video diagnostic for ATI and the Video passed repeated stress test as well. Over Labor Day I conducted these test and re-installed windows 64-bit; on the following Monday windows informed me I needed to activate windows, so I verified the correct key and called to do so, successfully.
With that background given here is the question. Recently over the last two or three months, for no apparent reason, mainly on boot the fan races to top speed and the system shuts down to protect itself. I researched this a little and found one cause to be inadequate airflow over the CPU to keep it cool; the recommendation made sense to vacuum with a computer vacuum and be sure airflow is not somehow obstructed. I am now thinking all these problems are related to the CPU temp sensor. Is it on the CPU fan or the motherboard, and can raising the fan speed in BIOS help prevent the problem, particularly if it on the motherboard.
    John M Gray II

My pentium 4 3.0c stock Intel fan is 4.44 watts. Isn't the mobo designed for this?
Also, can the sys fan header have the speed sensor activated by a bios fix or is it a hardware issue where it just does not exist? If hardware, seems strange since Corecell shows sys fan.

  • IMac (Late 2006) fan speed is 4600 rpm and nothing will change it

I just brought my iMac 24" 2.16GHz Late 2006 back from the Apple Store today and the ODD fan is running at 4600 rpm!!! The noise it generates is way too loud. It is comparable to the wind tunnel G4 I replaced. Any thoughts on how to lower the fan speed?
I took the iMac in on 12 Sep to repair microphone and video crashes. They repaired the mike and replaced the video card with an NVIDIA GeForce 7600GT. I picked it up on 3 Oct.
I have SMCFan and iStat Pro installed to monitor and adjust the minimum fan speed. I tried the usual troubleshooting steps (e.g., reset PRAM, Safe Boot, ran troubleshooting utilities, etc. to no avail.

    David,
Looking through my old posts to refresh my memory, my face is red as *I AM* mistaken:O
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=4064287&#4064287
I was recalling that Intel iMac users were doing the wrong SMC result three years ago (actually they were doing the SMU reset that was for the pre-Intel G-5 iMacs), and that you and I explained to them the correct way - which is of course what you recommended above:D
Nevertheless, since there is no further risk of causing the fans to race in this instance, I would myself do the wrong SMC reset method, and if it does not work, turn right around and do it the way Apple recommends. This still might result in correcting the problem.
By the way, it was widely reported three years ago that the SMC reset was frequently not successful on the first attempt, so the alternative is to try this harmless procedure at least several times before giving up on it.

  • Lenovo G560 overheating. Need tips on fan speed control

When I am watching movies on my G560 laptop, the area to the left of my touchpad is getting very hot and the laptop is shutting down at times.
When I bought my laptop I used to hear fan noise, but I have noticed recently that I do not hear the fan any more. I was wondering of there was a way to check the fan speed and manually alter it.
The warranty on my G560 is running out with in a month or so, a quick response would be appreciated.

the cpu greece tests over the years are the most bunch of snake oil i ever seen.
one review site did a test with 50 and used choclate and fingernail polish to show most are complete waste of money.
    compaq builds junk.
    lenovo dose not.
the real reason is the notebook makers dont even built the latops.
there like 3 companys that make 90% of the worlds notebooks and pc.
you never even heard of them either.
they make the sonys, acers and so on in a plant on a line with dozens of brands.
just like the way foxconn makes the apples these are huge companys that make the products per instruction of the notebook brand.
notebooks are not like desktops one bit because they are in a tiny space where heat puts a curse in the board.
when you release this you release that spot.
the part of contact for a cpu die is really tiny so it dont have to make the same contact point as cpu cooler.
cpu coolers of notebook are well designed unlike the desktop cooler they make very good contact.
discrete graphics is another story most of all on compaqs with they used a very bad design and had majior issues with.
trust me there no such issues with lenovos because they use a good company to make there notebooks and they also use a good design.
the fan noise issue well that was more of a watch out for sandy bridge issue as sandy bridge can be a very hot chip.
undervolting the chip makes a huge difference in heat as it comes with no performance loss.
it also dont change the way the cpu sits.
when the cpu was mated to the motherboard it perfict that day.
when you pull the cpu now it never fit the same exact way as it has been stressed over time by the tourqe and the heat.
pulling it will effect the fit.
most people dont have the skill to change the greece on a cpu because they will use to much and unlike a desktop cpu that has no open transistors on the surface the mobile cpu dose.
they will add too much and it will run and short out them.
look at a pic of a mobile cpu and then a desktop cpu.
    a very different design.
what you telling people is a skill they dont have because they have no idea that a simple mistake will cost them hundreads of dollers.
notebook cpu run 200-300 dollers and some 500 bucks.
pulling the cpu heatsink will effect it natural fit because it under tenion.
i know this because i know metals well and i have 20 years of experence in this area.
i alos worked for a company long ago that made robots for the waffer cpu come from.
i think some people think they might know a quik fix because they built a pc before but notebooks are very different.
i do custom notebook setups for people up here in boston who are willing to spend more on my labour then most notebooks cost.
when i set up a pc it takes me 4-6 hours normally thats a standard win 7 time with all security and services adjusted complete.
people pay for my services because they get longer run times and they stomp anything even notebook makers that charge thousands for custom setups.
if i thought putting snake oil on a cpu would lower temps i would do it just for the lower fan noise and power use it would save.
i know the moment i release the heatsink i never recreate the same exact fit it had under the stress that time made and the point of contact metal to metal will allways be better then if you add silicon to it.
most people dont get that more then a pin head will be more then enough because more then that will cause a heat barrier and lower that.
there whole point to thermal paste is to fill graps in the metal that are from the lapping process.
it not to help cool it like some think.
no thermal paste will ever work better then a pure magnetic grip of metal to metal.
infact if you machine two blocks perfict they stick to each other as if they were magnets.
tourqe them and add heat and they never do that again.
that why latops heatsinks i feel are much more different them desktops one and what most people dont grasp.
dont belive me call your high school science teacher and he explaine why to you.

  • Change fan speeds on Lenovo G560?

Hey there, I'm wondering, is it possible to manually change the fan speeds on this laptop? When I'm rendering a video in Sony Vegas it heats up my laptop and I'm just wondering is there a solution other than laptop cooling pads?

as i know, controlling the fan is not possible for this serie of lenovo.

  • How can I control fan speeds in Win7 on a MBP-R for gaming?

I have a MacBook Pro with Retina Display. It has had Windows 7 installed and I want to play some 3D action games. How do I stop internal parts from overheating? I intend to use a USB cooling pad but that'll do nothing if the internal fans remain at idle speed.
The only Windows fan speed control utility I could find was the 4-year old SpeedFan which fails to detect the presence of any internal fans. I'm not impressed with the Windows community's failure to offer more and better than this tired old relic.
    So the questions remain:
    (1) Is the hardware still capable of automatically accelerating the fans as temperatures rise while gaming in Windows?
    (2) What In Windows forces the MBP-R to lock the nVidia GPU into continuous duty and ignores Intel GPU?
    (3) What control does the user have for (2)?
    (4) How can I protect my MacBook Pro/Retina from overheating while playing PC games, apart from not playing games?

Moved from the Creative Cloud to the Lightroom forum. They will be able to help you here.

  • How can I control my fan speed?

How can I control my fan speed on my macbook pro? I use SMC for gaming and streaming video from the internet when using my Mac OS, but I partitioned my drive and installed Windows 8 in order to play a different game (not a huge game) and the computer heats up dramatically when playing on Windows through Boot Camp to the point that it freezes every time (it never does this when playing a mac game or streaming on the normal partition Mac OS).
Any suggestions or programs to control fan speed of the mac from windows?

Get a cooling pad.  That will much better than trying to constantly adjust fan speeds.
    Ciao.

  • Tweak the balance between fan speed and CPU temperature / Dell M6400?

    Hi all,
I have a Dell Precision M6400 17" laptop. It runs really well on Arch, but is a bit noisy. When I start the laptop, its CPU fan stays at its minimal speed only for 1 or 2 minutes, then increases its rotation speed to a second level. It reaches it maximal speed only under heavy load, when the CPU reaches >80-95°C. I would rather let the CPU run a bit hotter before the fan starts to blow: let's say the fan could enter its intermediary speed between 70°C and 85°C instead of 55-80°C, and blow at is its maximum speed beyond that.
I checked the Fan Speed Control wiki page, but lm-sensors is not able to show me the status of the fans. Any idea ?
    Aurel.
PS: the temperature of the GPU is not reported by sensors, and nvidia-settings reports around 60°C. Its dedicated fan is very quiet.

    Hi aurelieng,
I'm in the same situation from at least 1 month ( INTEL CORE 2 EXTREME X9100, 3.06GHz with 8GB ram, one solid state disk 128 GB, and one sata disk 500GB)
My dell M6400 has dual boot: ubuntu and windows7. The fan works a lot and continuosly in both environment and this is the reason because I have doubt that the origin of the problem is in hardware problem?

  • Unusual Fan-Speed (up to 6200rpm @ 92°CPU), MBP 2011/ OSX 10.10.2

    Dear Community,
    I've got a problem with my MacBook Pro (late 2011) [2.4 Ghz/ 16GB RAM (upgraded)/ 256 GB SSD (upgraded)/ 500GB HDD (internal, upgraded (instead of DualDrive, iFixit-slot)).
Since last week I am observing that the fan of my Macbook revs up pretty high and pretty quickly up to 92° CPU temperature @ 6200rpm of the fan according to iStats Pro. This can happen in idle as well as load of any kind. I already cleaned the fan. Never experienced it before. Pretty unusual behaviour.
Do you have any suggestions/ guesses/ tips/ help for me? Thank you very much in advance.
Here's a copy of an (Etre)Check that I just recently ran. Hopefully it helps:

Thank you very much for your answer, OGELTHORPE.
I actually did reset the SMC several times the last few days and also observed unusual behaviour by the use of the Activity Monitor – with no result.
The CPU temperature as well as the fan speed can be at a top level without many processes at all. Happened right before I posted my question just after the last start of the system. Of course it also happens when I run a whole bunch of applications, but even in that case it differs. Sometimes it goes up, sometimes it's totally normal. That's why I called it "unusual".
Any further ideas besides the SMC reset?
