Is the MySQL a Relational Database?

Is the MySQL a relational database?

MySQL uses several different storage engines to
manage the data in tables, and the choice of storage
engine determines the capability of the table. These
are MyISAM, MERGE, InnoDB, BDB, and HEAP or Memory.
Each has ramifications regarding queries and data
a storage. The BDB storage engine is available with
the *max version of mysql.
By default, tables created in MySQL with a standard
CREATE TABLE statement use the MyISAM storage engine,
which does not support foreign keys or transactions.THERE'S my problem: I'm too cheap to use anything other than the free download. 8)
I wonder how many folks KNOW that the free one doesn't support referential integrity and use it anyway? The LAMP platform gets a LOT of play because it's "free".
InnoDB supports transactions with full ACID
D compliance, auto-recovery following a crash of the
MySQL server, foreign keys and referential integrity
with cascading deletes and updates. Query contention
is managed with row level locking, rather than table
level locking with MyISAM.Thank you so much for the info. Sincerely, %

  • What is the difference between relational database and NoSql DB

    HI,
    i never work with any nosql db. so i like to know What is the difference between relational database and NoSql DB ?
    in relational db sql server we can create relation between table by PK and FK. so is it possible in NoSql db like Mongo db ?
    sql server db use to in big data for any organization. does Mongo db like nosql db use for same purpose ?
    i like to know in what kind of situation people use Mongo db or any NoSql db. please tell me few sample scenario where people like to use Mongo db or any NoSql. thanks

    Here are some good links that describe the differences:

  • JDBC for non-relational Databases.

    Hi All,
    correct me if I am wrong in my understanding,
    1. JDBC are a set of specifications (as interfaces etc..) which each
    vendor is expected to provide implementation.
    2. JDBC is for relationsla databases only (like oracle,MySQL etc..) it
    does not take into account the access to non-relational databases.
    3. If 2 is true, is there an equivalent of JDBC for non-relational
    databases?
    TIA.

    1. JDBC are a set of specifications (as interfaces etc..) which each
    vendor is expected to provide implementation.
    Broadly speaking, yes. It doesn't have to be the vendor that provides the implementation, and an ODBC driver (to be used via the JdbcOdbc bridge) is adequate if a native JDBC driver is not available.
    2. JDBC is for relationsla databases only (like oracle,MySQL etc..) it
    does not take into account the access to non-relational databases.
    It expects tabular results. Aside from that I don't think it mandates anything about the design of the underlying system. Certainly it's entirely agnostic about syntactic issues.
    For example, it can talk to Excel spreadsheets, via the JdbcOdbc bridge, and Excel is by no stretch of the imagination a relational database. IMS is not a relational database, but that has a JDBC driver.
    3. If 2 is true, is there an equivalent of JDBC for non-relational
    databases?
    2 is not true, and I'm not aware of any "non relational" database connection standard, probably for this very reason. There may well be vendor specific tools for talking to some systems.

  • XML vs Relational Database

    For my recent project, I stored customers' preferences in XML document. Someone asked me why didn't I store the preferences in relational database. After all, this is the purpose of the database; to store and retrieve info.
    What would u answer to this question.

    This is a common question. For simple applications, xml storage can produce the same results as a relational database. I guess it depends on the requirement of the application and your preference. If it is just a config file, then why have the overhead of a database?

  • How to get data into the mySQL database?

    First some background.
    I have a website that has outgrown its designed dimensions and is a huge burden to maintain. See PPBM5 Benchmark
    There is a lot of maintenance work involved, so I'm investigating a PHP/MySQL approach to easen the burden and to add functionality to the site. With the current Excel based structure and over 420 entries, it is cumbersome for me to maintain, but also for users to find what they need.
    A MySQL based dynamic structure is a lot easier and offers vastly more selection capabilities, like selecting only records that meet specific criteria.
    Data submission is done with a form, that contains most of the relevant data, but the drawack is that people submitting their data are often not technically inclined, give wrong answers due to a lack of understanding or making typo's. The test results are attached in one or two separate .txt files, but often they have not read the instructions correctly or did something wrong, so these attached .txt files can not be trusted automatically, they have to be checked before inclusion.
    These were my initial thoughts:
    1. Data collection:
    To avoid spending all our energy and time  on correcting typo's, getting missing data, correcting errors, I am  investigating the use of CPU-Z in Ghost mode to create a .txt or .html  file that contains all relevant hardware info we need and even more. It gives all the info we currently have, but adds  data like number of memory sticks, DDR timings, stock clock speed and  BCLK setting, video card info and VRAM size, etc.
    To see what I mean, run CPU-Z, go to the About tab and press the Save Report button and look at the results.
    This can all be done without user intervention in an automatic way, but  maybe I need to add an Auto-It file to the test to make it all run as  desired.
    If this works and I'm able to extract the relevant data from the created  file and can insert it into the database, we may be in business for the  next version of PPBM5.5 or PPBM6. It does require a modification to the instructions, making them a lot  easier, because there is less data to fill out.
    2. Data submission:
    The submission form can be simplified if  the CPU-Z data can be used. We have to create an automatic way to attach  the created .html file from CPU-Z to the submission form and we have to  streamline the Output.txt and Output-MPE.txt files to be more easily included in the 'form.lib.php' file. It  currently is manual labor and very time consuming.
    3. Adding to Database:
    I have to find a way to create database  records from the Gmail forms I receive. All incoming mail messages need  to be checked on relevancy and if relevant, need to be added  automatically to the database and then offered for approval before final inclusion in the database. Data included in the database  will then include submission date and time, Email address,  IP address  used, plus links to the files submitted and available on the website.
    4. Publication of the database:
    After approval of new records from step  3, all updates will be automatically applied to the database and  accessible for users. I do not yet intend to introduce a user account ,  requesting login before all functionality is accessible. Too much trouble and administration.
    Queries should be possible on things like CPU (check box), so include  17-920, i7-930, i7-950 but exclude i7-980X and i7-990X, Size of memory  (check box), Overclocked (boolean, yes, no), SSD as OS disk, and similar  options.
    The biggest problem is to keep the color grading and statistical  indicators (Top, D9, Q3, Med, Q1 and D1) intact on dynamically generated  queries. Say you make a query which results in 20 observations, this  should show the related colors and legends. Next query results in 48 observations and of course the color grading and legends  do need to reflect that. Question in my mind, does the RPI remain  constant, independent of the query or does that need to be recalculated  on the basis of the query?
    Next thing is to allow a user to select a specific observation and by  simply clicking on it be shown, in a separate window (detail page) or  accordion, all the CPU-Z related information about the hardware.
    The graphs, Top-20 and MPE Gains, need to be dynamically adjusted, based on the query used.
    5. Ideally, external links:
    In an ideal situation, one could link the  CPU-Z data to external price databases, looking up current prices for  CPU, memory, video card, disks, raid controller, etc. to get instant  BFTB charts, based on the query made. But that is the next step.
    Situation now:
    I have a MySQL database that is easily updated with the new submissions. Simply create a .CSV flie from the submitted forms and import that into the database. The bulk of the initial work is done.Lots remain to be done as you can see above, but that is for a later time.
    Question:
    I have this table, that needs to be filled with data in the submitted and attached files. Mr. X submitted his data and can be uniquely identified by his "Ref_ID". He attached one or two files in .TXT format with the relevant test data. These files are stored on the server with a concatenated name:
    "Ref_ID","-","filename"
    Say his Ref-ID is: 20110204-6cf5 and his submitted file is called: Output(99).txt then the file can be found on the server as
    20110204-6cf5-Output(99).txt
    I need to be able to open that comma delimited file, the contents may look like this: "439","1036","819","531" and insert these contents into the relevant record and fields.
    Graphically,
    is what I want to achieve.
    This being my first exposure to PHP/MySQL, you can imagine I'm not clear on how to go from here.
    Added complication is that I actually have 5 numbers to insert per record and two calculated fields, Total Score and RPI should be calculated fields. Haven't yet figured out how to handle calculated fields, maybe only in the PHP/HTML code and not in the database.
    I hope someone can help me.

    You do have a very complex looking site and may need several tables in mysql to handle all that data. If you knew to phpmysql I would suggest taking a look at this tutorial it will help get you started in understanding how to $_GET info from a database and also how to $_POST data to a database. I am no expert just learning myself and I found this very helpful. This is the link http://www.adobe.com/devnet/dreamweaver/articles/first_dynamic_site_pt1.html
    There are also many tutorials on Youtube to help build a CMS Content Management Site I would suggest the following: -

    http://www.youtube.com/user/flashbuilding
    And many more on my channel here
    http://www.youtube.com/user/Whisperingonthewind
    CMS's are easier to maintain, add edit and delete content.
    I have also recently bought a Book by David Powers Training from the Source very helpful.
    Anyway hope you get it sorted.

  • SQL ENTERPRISE: The edition of Reporting Services that you are using requires that you use local SQL Server relational databases for report data sources and the report server database

    The error below makes absolutely no sense! I'm using Enterprise Core...yet I'm being told I can't use remote data sources:
    w3wp!library!8!03/05/2015-19:08:48:: i INFO: Catalog SQL Server Edition = EnterpriseCore

    Services that you are using requires that you use local SQL Server relational databases for report data sources and the report server database." is not supported in this edition of Reporting Services.;
    Really? This totally contradicts the documentation found here:
    https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms157285(v=sql.110).aspx
    That article says remote connections are completely supported.
    ARGH! Why does this have to be so difficult to setup?!?

    Hi jeffoliver1000,
    According to your description, you are using Enterprise Core edition and you are prompted that you can’t use remote data sources.
    In your scenario, we neither ignore your point nor be doubt with what you say. But actually we have met the case before that even though the SQL Server engine is Enterprise but the reporting services is still standard. So I would recommend you to find the
    actual edition of reporting services you are using. You can find Reporting Services starting SKU in the Reporting Service logs ( default location: C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\<instance name>\Reporting Services\LogFiles). For more information,
    please refer to the similar thread below:

    By the way, have you installed the other SQL Server edition before?

  • Problem in saving the image into SQL database..

    Hello,
    In my application I have to save image file (say jpg) into the database and retrieve back and display it on the applet. I am through with grabbing the pixels of the image & sending the pixel array to the servlet but I am struck in how to store the image into the database and retrieve the same.
    Can anybody please help me in this regard... its really urgent...
    Thanks in advance
    Swarna

    Hello.
    I've been researching this problem (saving images in a MySQL database) in order to accomplish a task I was assigned to. Finally I was able to do it. I'd be glad if it will be of any use.
    First of all: the original question was related to an applet. So, the post from rkippen should be read. It says almost everything, leaving the code job for us. Since I managed to write some code, I'll put it here, but I'm not dealing with the byte transferring issue.
    To obtain a byte array from a file I'd open the file with FileInputStream and use a loop to read bytes from it and save them into a ByteArrayOutputStream object. The ByteArrayOutputStream class has a method named toByteArray() which returns an array of bytes (byte [] b = baos.toByteArray()) that can be transferred in a socket connection, as said by rkippen.
    My problem was to save an image captured by a web camera. I had an Image object, which I converted into a byte array and saved into the database. Eventually I had to read the image and show it to the user.
    The table in the MySQL database could be:
    CREATE TABLE  test (
      id int(11) NOT NULL auto_increment,
      img blob NOT NULL,
      PRIMARY KEY  (id)
    )I had problems trying to use the setBlob and getBlob methods in the Statement object, so I used the setBytes and getBytes methods . In the end, I liked these methods most because they where more suitable to my application.
    The database operations are:
        public int insertImage(Image image) throws SQLException {
            int id = -1;
            String sql = "insert into test (img) values (?)\n";
            PreparedStatement ps = this.getStatement(sql);  // this method is trivial
            byte [] bytes = this.getBytes(imagem); // * see below
            ps.setBytes(1, bytes);
            ps.executeUpdate();
            id = ps.getGeneratedKeys().getInt(0); //Actually I couldn't make this line work yet.
            return id;
        public Image selectImage(int id) throws SQLException {
            Image img = null;
            String sql = "select img from test where id = ?\n";
            PreparedStatement ps = getStatement(sql);
            ps.setInt(1, id);
            ResultSet rs = ps.executeQuery();
            if (rs.next()) {
                byte [] bytes = rs.getBytes(1);
                img = this.getImage(bytes); // * see below
            return img;
        }* If the bytes are read directly from a file, I think it is not necessary to convert it into an Image. Just send the bytes to the database method would work. On the other hand, if the image read form the DB will be written directly into files, the bytes obtained from rs.getBytes(1) would be enough.
    The image operations are:
        public byte [] getBytes(Image image) {
            ByteArrayOutputStream baos = new ByteArrayOutputStream();
            try {
                ImageIO.write(this.getBufferedImage(image), "JPEG", baos);
            } catch (IOException ex) {
                throw new RuntimeException(ex);
            return baos.toByteArray();
        public Image getImage(byte [] bytes)  {
            Image image = null;
            ByteArrayInputStream bais = new ByteArrayInputStream(bytes);
            try {
                image = ImageIO.read(bais);
            } catch (IOException ex) {
                throw new RuntimeException(ex);
            return image;
        public BufferedImage getBufferedImage(Image image) {
            int width = image.getWidth(null);
            int height = image.getHeight(null);
            BufferedImage bi = new BufferedImage(width, height, BufferedImage.TYPE_INT_RGB);
            Graphics2D g2d = bi.createGraphics();
            g2d.drawImage(image, 0, 0, null);
            return bi;
        }That's it. I hope it is useful.

  • Mapping Objects to Relational Databases

    Hi,
    I do not know if this is the more suitable forum to ask this question, but I am going to try it:
    I am developing an application with two parts.
    1. A server developed in J2SE which is connected to a MySQL database.
    2. A client developed in Swing which shows data received from the server by RMI.
    Up to now, I map the relational database data in objects manually in the server side. But I would like to use a framework to do this (JDO, EJB 3.0, hibernate...).
    I have read a lot about them, but I have serious doubts. Can I use them with J2SE? I think that it is necessary to use JBoss (or another application server) if I use EJB, it is true? Which is the easiest?
    Which technology do you advice me?
    I am very confused, thanks in advance.

    I am developing an application with two parts.
    1. A server developed in J2SE which is connected to
    a MySQL database.Interesting since the JDBC API is not part of J2SE. How do you connect to the database without using JDBC? If you are using JDBC, why are you so confused?
    2. A client developed in Swing which shows data
    received from the server by RMI.Again, the RMI API is not part of the J2SE. If you are truthfully writing RMI code, which is complex, and you are writing Swing code, and you may be writing JDBC code, why are you very confused?
    I have read a lot about them, but I have serious
    doubts. Can I use them with J2SE? Did read a lot about them? Why do you have serious doubts? Did you understand what you read?
    I suggest you read some more.

  • Fields missing from MYSQL table in Database Expert

    I have just updgraded from Crystal XI to 2011 and I am still having issues with joining a mysql table to any other table.
    Fields show up in field explorer but when I try to uise Database expert the only filed in the MYSQL table is the ID field.
    Am I missing something here. Same problem with both versions. When I runa report using just the mysql table evrything works fine.

    Typically if the field doesn't show up the CR can't figure out what type it is which means when we query the DB for the field type the client/server returns the wrong type or some type that CR doesn't support.
    How is the field defined on the server?
    Thank you

  • Web Analysis Report prompted for relational database login

    We have given access to the WA reports and everything works fine in general. One of the user trying to open same report(s) document(s) via Workspace and its getting prompted with relational database login? I have verified for the access and everything seems to be fine.
    I do not know the reason for this. Can anyone help me? Thanks.

    From the forums, i got the below MAXL commands to sync the user access :
    alter system resync sss; --> this command will sync all the users, groups.
    alter group <group name> sync security with all application; --> This can be used to individually sync the required group
    alter user <user name> sync security with all application; --> This can be used to individually sync the required user
    Will check it up with user on any change in her access.
    Thanks,

  • How to include the mysql-connector in a simple .jar file

    Well I started up with java again. Just messing around. This project I'm making now is just plain simple, I have a program thats going to read a table in a database from a server I have here at home. It works fine if I do like this: java javafil to run the file, it reads from the database fine.
    But when I made a .jar file out of it using this command: jar cmf manifest.txt javafile.jar *.class
    It won't connect to the database. Or it doesn't print out the rows in the table. So I thought I have to include the mysql-connector with the .jar.
    manifest.txt
    Main-Class: javafile
    Now what is an easy way to do this?
    This program is also going to be run from a computer that might not have the mysql-connector installed on the computer. Like a friend of mine wants to connect to the database and read it.
    I've tried to google "mysql connector in a .jar file" but I get tons of informations about the mysql-connector.jar instead of what I'm looking for.
    Thanks,

    Yeah but the other computer might not have that connector file on their computer. So is there like I way I can use it when it is in the .jar file? Thats kinda what I wanted. You cannot include another JAR in a JAR file. You however can extract it and put the classes in your JAR. Verify the license agreement if it is allowed. Although this is considered as a bad practice (poor upgradebility and maintainability).
    If you don't want to use the -cp parameter, then use the class-path entry of the manifest.mf of your JAR. You can also write a batch file with the whole JAR -cp command in a single line and run the batch file instead.
    Pluss, even though I have the right classpath in the environment variables set, it doesn't work for me either. So I guess it doesn't load the connector when running the .jar file.The classpath environment variable has nothing to do with running JAR's. Forget about it and use the -cp or -classpath parameter.

  • How do i upload an image to a server and put the name into a database table

    Ok, i found a php image upload script that im using for a cms
    image gallery on my site. But for it to work the way i need to i
    have to have certain information submited into a mysql table at the
    same time. I could just make it so the user types the name of the
    image in a second form, but i would rather not have to as it seems
    a clumsy way to do things and opens things up to typos etc.
    So, i can upload the image ok, and i can upload data to the
    table, but i dont know what I have to do so that the name of the
    uploaded file is automaticly inserted into the mysql table.
    The first bit of code below is the form I am using to upload
    the file to the server. The second bit of code is what I am using

    Hi Jeff:
    Though this does not show you how to solve this issue via a
    code
    snippett, there are a couple of extensions at WebAssist.com
    that enable
    you to do this, they are Data Assist and Digital File Pro.
    When you have
    time, take a look at these Solution Recipes (tutorials) that
    show how
    DataAssist is used and then now Digital File Pro is used in
    conjunction
    with DataAssist:
    http://www.webassist.com/professional/products/solutionrecipe/Media_139.asp
    http://www.webassist.com/professional/products/solutionrecipe/Media_112.asp
    DataAssist can be used to save time when you need to build
    database
    search and management applications quickly, and Digital File
    Pro can be
    used to include file upload functionality to your form fields
    while
    enabling you to insert your server file name into the
    database, all on
    the same page.

  • Not able to create XML from an existing relational database

    Hi,
    I am trying to create and xml from an existing relational database. I am not able to get any XML data, I receive "XMLTYPE()" as the result.
    Here's the query -
    SQL> select o.order_id, XMLELEMENT("order", XMLATTRIBUTES(o.order_id as ID)) AS "result" from order_
    info o where order_id=2793;
    ORDER_ID
    result()
    +2793+
    XMLTYPE()
    I was expecting to get +<order id=2793 />+ instead of XMLTYPE().
    I am using -
    SQLPlus: Release 9.0.1.0.1*
    Oracle Database 10g Enterprise Edition Release 10.2.0.1.0 - 64bit Production
    I have also run some checks to confirm XML DB installation -
    SQL> select 1 from all_users where username  = 'XDB';
    +1+
    +1+
    SQL> desc RESOURCE_VIEW;
    Name                                      Null?    Type
    RES                                                SYS.XMLTYPE
    ANY_PATH                                           VARCHAR2(4000)
    RESID                                              RAW(16)
    I think, I have something wrong with installation or configuration.
    Any idea about what have I done wrong here?

    Works fine now. Got the result "<order ID="2793"></order>".
    Thanks. :-)

  • Errors in the high-level relational engine. A connection could not be made to the data source with the DataSourceID of '

    When I deploy the cube which is sitting on my PC (local) the following 4 errors come up:
    Error 1 The datasource , 'AdventureWorksDW', contains an ImpersonationMode that that is not supported for processing operations.  0 0
    Error 2 Errors in the high-level relational engine. A connection could not be made to the data source with the DataSourceID of 'Adventure Works DW', Name of 'AdventureWorksDW'.  0 0
    Error 3 Errors in the OLAP storage engine: An error occurred while the dimension, with the ID of 'Customer', Name of 'Customer' was being processed.  0 0
    Error 4 Errors in the OLAP storage engine: An error occurred while the 'Customer Alternate Key' attribute of the 'Customer' dimension from the 'Analysis Services Tutorial' database was being processed.  0 0

    Sorry hit the wrong button there. That is not entire solution and setting it to default would work when using a single box and not in a distributed application solution. If you are creating the analysis database manually or using the wizard then you can
    set the impersonation to your heart content as long as the right permission has been set on the analysis server.
    In my case I was using MS Project Server 2010 to create the database in the OLAP configuration section. The situation is that the underlying build script has been configured to use the default setting which is the SQL Service account and this account does
    not have permission in Project Server I believe.
    Changing the account to match the Project service account allowed for a successful build \ creation of the database. My verdict is that this is a bug in Project Server because it needs to include the option to choose impersonation when creating the Database
    this way it will not use the default which led to my error in the first place. I do not think there is a one fix for all in relations to this problem it is an environment by environment issue and should be resolved as such. But the idea around fixing it is
    if you are using the SQL Analysis server service account as the account creating the database and cubes then default or service account is fine. If you are using a custom account then set that custom account in the impersonation details after you have granted
    it SQL analysis administrator role. You can remove that role after the DB is created and harden it by creating a role with administrative permissions.
    Hope this helps.

  • Essbase as a source in OBIEE 11g and using lookup to Relation database

    Hello All,
    We are trying to implement Essbase as primary source for our obiee 11g repository and using relational database as secondary source of data.
    I was using a lookup functionality in repository to lookup value from one of the Essbase's Dimension's attribute to relational database, however, there is error when testing this in OBIEE Dashboards.
    And tried to look this error in support.oracle and googled it but was not able to find anything on it.
    State: HY000. Code: 10058. [NQODBC] [SQL_STATE: HY000] [nQSError: 10058] A general error has occurred. [nQSError: 43113] Message returned from OBIS. [nQSError: 43119] Query Failed: [nQSError: 46008] Internal error: File server\Query\Src\SQLookupUtility.cpp, line 145. (HY000)
    Have you had any such issue and how can we pass this issue?
    I am trying to find if there are any quick resolution before going to oracle support.
    TIA.
    Parish

    Is Essbase 11.1.1.3 supported as a source for OBIEE 11g?From the certification matrix (http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/middleware/bi-enterprise-edition/bi-11gr1certmatrix-166168.xls) we can see that only Essbase 9.3.3+ and 11.1.2+ are supported, not 11.1.1.3
